  • An attempt to finish the "Downstream" series didn't go as planned. Just wasn't able to access the water I wanted - but I still gathered some nice video of a lonely stretch of the Kootenai River with deep canyon walls. Still waters run deep!
    The Q500 continues to shine.
    Stay tuned for Part 3...

Wow .. completely stunning .... I have just taken delivery of the Q500 and am blown away by all aspects of its operation and quality. Your video footage really demonstrates it perfectly .. well done

Another fine video! Can't wait for mine to arrive! Dealers can't seem to keep these units on the shelves...They are selling like hotcakes and your videos show why. Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work!

High Flyer Thanks... so much fun to fly this quad. So easy to get great video.

Awesome vid. Music was spot on. I'm on the fence about the yuneec 4k and phantom 3. My concern is the range with the yuneec 4k. How far can fly until you loose video on the controller?

      Thanks for the comment!
I have had the Q500 out to +/- 2000' before video loss - but that was in pretty good (open) conditions with the quad flying in a "tail-in" position with the camera pointed straight at the horizon - that appears to be the best orientation for the camera antenna . At that range it would lose video if I began to yaw (spin) the aircraft at all. I have heard great things about the "horizon fpv" antennas for pushing the Q to around 3000' before video loss (and MUCH MUCH further for control functions).
      Check them out at: horizonfpvantennas.mybigcommerce.com/
I actually sold my Typhoon about a month ago and am going to a Phantom 3. I have had a P2 Vision for several years now and personally have found it to be more enjoyable to fly than the Q500. Don't get me wrong, the Q is made for video... and it does a much better job than almost any other RTF system out there. The gimbal is well configured to the slow nature of the quad, and the two together make for some very smooth video - I do kick myself at times for selling it. The CGO2 camera on my Q500 didn't have much for white balance and would wash out quite a bit (notice it in this video... kind of overly bright in the sunlit areas), but I have read that the 4K camera is fully configurable to avoid lighting issues like this.
The main concern I always had with the Q was the video lag. The video delay from camera to controller was nearly a full second - which can make you pretty unsure of yourself if trying to fly strictly FPV (I really enjoy FVP flight!). I am not sure if the video lag has been enhanced in the new 4K model or not - I hope it has.
Anyway, I have had a pretty good experience with DJI and Yuneec, I don't try to steer anyone away from either brand - they each have strong and week points.
Good luck to you with either choice... happy flying!

Byron Sanderson thanks dude. Good info. It would be an easier decision if they were lower in price haha. Enjoyed watching your vids, thanks again for the reply.

Hi, I have looked at your videos with the Q500 and I must say they look good. What are your thoughts on this craft. I am a UAV pilot in the UK and fly large rigs for a couple of production companies. I no longer own my own craft but would like a quick and easy out of box solution for my own enjoyment, will the Q500 fit the bill? Let me know what you think, oh and keep the videos coming !!!
    Paul

The Q500 is going to be a great machine if you are looking to capture really stable video right out of the box. I also fly a DJI Phantom Vision which I believe it takes much nicer stills than the Typhoon but cannot match the stability and smooth aspect of the Typhoons video - the CGO2 shooting at 1080/60fps is GREAT!.
There are some features I would like to see improved. First would be the high latency of the video downlink to the ST10 controller. Basically you are dealing with nearly a full second of delay in the FPV, which is kind of nerve racking when it gets far out and you are in tight quarters (like the canyon walls in some of my videos).
I would also like to see the overall response and speed of the aircraft increased while the GPS is active (it's pretty responsive with GPS off). Even with the right dial set to "rabbit" mode it only tops out at around 15mph. This DOES make for smooth transitions in video, but it would be nice to have more expo in the speed dial when needed.
Oh... one other mention, Paul. I sometimes have a hard time with too much natural light in video. For instance, the video above has some very bright reflection and glare from the rock surfaces that I couldn't do much about. The CGO2 camera does not have any settings for white balance like my Phantom Vision FC200 camera does. DJI was smart to include this in their product and essentially allow the camera to compensate itself with an auto white balance feature when things get too bright. I am hoping to find a way to filter the lens on the CGO2 for bright conditions. Perhaps someone will market a filter kit soon!
      Hope this helps!

Byron Sanderson Hi Byron, many thanks for your detailed reply, I think I will probably hold off for a while to see if Quneec update the camera. It seems from reading the forums that there is little or no support in the UK for the product. I like the concept of the Q500 though. Thanks again.

Paul Corazzo Horizon Hobby will be the first point of contact in the UK or there is European support. I have taken the plunge on the Quad and it really is a complete joy to fly, I have several DJI products but this just feels reliable and safe and the footage is stunning. When you look at the price point Yuneec have definitely got a winner and at last DJI have competition, perhaps DJI will start to test the products now before they sell them. Go for the Yuneec you won't be disappointed (I am also in the UK)

paul w Thanks Paul, I still fly DJI for others and have owned all of them, you can't print what I think of DJI and the way they treat customers. Yuneec does look like a breath of fresh air. I teach people to fly as well as building /repairing craft for people, I have had my Bnuc for nearly 3 years but the problem for me and the Q500 is that my flying field is within 5 miles of our local airport (Bournemouth) so I doubt that the Q500 would work. But I am impressed with the whole concept of the Q500.

Paul Corazzo Hi Paul .. I am also from Bournemouth although Live near LHR.. I have the same issue with the 'No Fly Zone' but to be perfectly honest I am just totally fed up with DJI .. I have spent so much money and then time tinkering at the location only to have airborne issues. Like yourself I am not a 'newbie' and would like to think I know what I am doing but my patience has run out.. A friend recently purchased the Inspire and the whole experience has been a very expensive nightmare with the usual silent response from DJI support.
