been watching & playing hockey for over 45 years .... this is one of the strongest core groups Nucks have ever had, and probably the best Coach/Management duo's they've ever assembled as well. yes, they are lacking depth on D, and Demko plagued with some mystery knee injury really sucks.....but with a bit of luck on the injury front, and the acquisition or development of one more really good Dman...I can definitely see this team surprising a lot of people this year...perhaps even a cup final appearance. Really excited this year!!! Go Nucks!!!!!
If Demko misses much of the season, but one of the other goalies has a good year and gets them into the playoffs, Demko will no longer be the starter in the playoffs. He will be the backup.
As an Oilers fan the Canucks are 100% the real deal. Realistically they were 1 game away from potentially being the position the Oilers were in last season. If Demko can be healthy at the right times, there's no reason to think they can't go on a deep playoff run this year.
Nice to see so many young players close to breaking the roster. Excited for Lekkerimäki and Räty. Hope they make the roster along the season, really need someone to break through on the D also.
The biggest question that will determine that answer is Demko. If he's healthy, maybe. But if it's Silovs and Lankinen for much of the season, they're a wildcard. They should be competitive with Tocchet's systems, but that's all I can really count on. They haven't made significant improvements on the back end and that's really what was the biggest cause of their struggles pre-Rick. Obviously, he came in and was influential in last season's success, but he also had a much better overall team than Bruce Boudreau had.
Team defence was the problem before Rick, not just the D pairings. We were shallow up front and on the back end. Since then we’ve added Hronek, Soucy, and we have a whole new bottom pairing. One of which, Deshernais, played in double digit games for Edmonton in the playoffs. And he made Nurse look way better when they paired them up, moving ceci down. We’ve also added defensively responsible forwards Our problem last year was 5 on 5 production, and rush chances.
People are not taking into consideration the deffensive coaching canucks have that turned zadorov from a 3rd pairing to a top 4 dman. Let's wait and see how they turn out first
@y6cd3sdzHs1g 5 to a 4, 5 to a 3 doesn't matter, he improved enough in half a season to move up the line and be enough of a force to get a big off season contract.
@@omfg322 He didn't seem particularly improved until the playoffs hit, so I would argue a lot of that was a hot playoff run and his agent. No sale on the Canucks.
Such a weird take. Zadorov did not change while with Vancouver. He had those abilities in spurts with Calgary too. If anything Vancouver has a weak defence minus their top 2.
I think the Canucks will be back in the playoffs this year but i don't see them getting as many points as last year. They might have to start the playoffs on the road as a lower seed this year. Which might actually be better for them to play the role of underdog. I see them finishing somewhere around 95-100 points.
Worth noting that they haven't made the playoffs two years in a row since 2012-13. I think they may have overperformed last year in part due to the new coach bump they got from Tocchet. That being said, I still expect them to make the playoffs in a still somewhat weak Pacific Division, probably as the 3rd seed behind EDM and VGK.
It they can just have a relatively healthy roster (especially Demko) come playoff time, I think they have a shot. I won't rank them as a top contender, but I think they will be a solid team and should have another 100 points or more season.
If this is Vancouvers Stanley Cup year, I would suggest replacing minor hockey players with retired Canucks in the pregame skate. That would have the existing players appreciate how much past teams wanted the Cup.
I think they could make a run if they get hot at the right moment. I think the additions if Debrusk and Sherwood outweigh the loss of Lindholm. Keep in the mix until Demko is healthy and go pedal to the metal when he's back.
Agree with Allvin at GM and Rutherford as President, there's optimism the Canucks can perform, and even get better through the year with various moves. They already proved both last year. Demko being injured to begin the year just might prove a blessing in disguise. Team has to learn to not rely on their goalie bailing them out, PLUS Demko gets more breathing space and rest to be at his best come playoff time.
My pick to win the cup in 2024-25 (Vancouver). One of my best hockey pundit pals agrees. Some BIG ifs (like Demko, Demko, and Demko) but just a weird feeling, and several quality grit guys that I think get slept on a bit, like Hronek, Garland, and Joshua.
It would seem that I am in the minority on Tyler Myers... For 5 years and the first couple months of last season he was a train wreck on the blue line, I wanted him gone so badly I would have given him away in a trade. But that changed last season as he became what I was used to seeing from Dan Hamhuis - 20+ minutes a night and very few noticeable errors. Meanwhile, he still has the size and skating. It would seem that this coaching group gave him the structure he needs to play in to go from a chaos giraffe into a solid shut down dman. I have also liked seeing some of his nasty side come out even in the preseason already. I was not nearly as impressed with Zadorov last season as I was with the transformation I saw in Myers. And considering we signed both Myers and Desharnais for what Boston gave Zadorov... I am quite good with that. That said, while I want to see how the new guys really fit in the regular line up - and having the depth players pushing up from below - I am currently asking the question "who is the contract this team would need to move/replace to get better?" Last year, that was Beauvillier to start the season, Kuzmenko (as much as I really like the player and think he will be very good in the NHL, he was not the right fit in Vancouver), and Mikheyev. I was very upset losing Podkolzin... when that kid puts his game together he is going to be very good. But who is that player/contract now? The thing that has impressed me so much with this management group is their ability to bring in players where I find myself asking -"who is this?" and seeing them become players who excel in the position they find themselves. Beauvillier being the one player I was not really impressed with, but at the same time, he was the money that made the Horvat trade work and we also got Hronek and Raty - and eventually Zadorov in that series of deals. I'm very interested to see what this team can do. I have them contending for the Cup next season, but how this team is going... they could take the game to another level this year and it would not surprise me.
Its ridiculous to suggest a conference final is someones ceiling..Imagine, getting that far and being like, "well, this is our ceiling boys, its been a blast!" 😅 Obviously, if a team can get that far, then they have at least a chance to go all the way.
Vancouver has the pieces to be a contender for some number of years, but not sure if they can put everything together to be a legit contender. Their top players are mostly on the younger side: Pety, Hughes, Boeser, Demko, Debrusk(?), and Hronek. Plus they have a consistent gamebreaker in Miller and an incredible coach in Tocc who appears to be an excellent communicator and is someone who players enjoy playing for. Tocc also doesn't let ppl off the hook on the defensive side of the game...
Team got stronger. They actually have 3 scoring lines. Joshua being hurt sucks. Demko hurt isnt as big of a deal. Hughes, Miller, Petty, Boeser, Hronek is an insane top 5 group. Now they have added Debrusk, and Sprong. Think people are gonna be really suprised by Sprong natural goal scorer. Canucks have one of the best d pairing in the league now with Hughes and Hronek. Miller and petty are as good as any other stars in the league. This team is miles ahead of last year. We have easily 8 forwards that could be a top 6 anywhere else in the league. Miller, Petty, Boeser, Debrusk, Hogs, Garland, Joshua, Sprong. Hughes could grab another gear and so could Petty.
Canucks prospect pool has improved but is still ranked in the bottom third of the league. They got a bunch of hard to play against players without any crazy contracts. DeBrusk is a huge improvement for the Pettersson line, where Petey had to do it all with less than stellar linemates last season. The forest of tree trunks on the blueline are going to be pretty intimidating for teams that decide to start pushing anyone around, like we saw last night in the game against Seattle.
Demko is being treated like him being playoff healthy it the priority. Healthy demko, Allvin deadline acquisitions, The extra goal scoring in the lineup. The two main pieces lost were Lindholm and Big Z, Both picked up along the way, so why not do something similar. This team is very much built for playoff hockey. You saw that when they were outplayed by EDM and NSH for games they ended up winning. When you shutdown the other team, you don't need to play better you just need to our score.
I think the Canucks have a good team. I was one of the few who thought they had a good team going into last year and even think I made a comment saying so on one of last year's preview videos. I don't think, right now, they are a cup contender. I think they can develop into a cup contender, even during this season. Some teams do get better during the season. It all depends on goaltending, and that means if Demok's healthy or one of his replacements up their game. They have the three keys to a championship team: an ace center (Pettersson) an ace d-man (Hughes) and a first rate goalie (Demko). For all the hype over Toronto the last ten years they've never had those three things at any time. Now the Nucks have to fill in around those 3.
Idk if I agree with this. Skinner isn’t an elite goalie, and Bouchard is definitely not an ace defenceman and they were one game from the cup. Colorado two years ago had the centre and defenceman but their goalie was Kuemper, who I don’t think is elite either. Vegas doesn’t really have an ace defenceman, and certainly didn’t during their cup run. Hill showed up big for them but he’s not really elite either, at least hasn’t been since their cup win.
@@mcthunderstick2374 You have a point. Then again, you need all three to at least not be a liability, which none of those were. Kuemper and Skinner both had solid above-900 save percentages and in 2022, Colorado scored 4.25 goals per game, which is just insane and can cover for a goalie. Then, for both teams, you have a great first-D pairing that plays well together and covers each other's weaknesses in Bouchard + Ekholm and Theodore + Pietrangelo, respectively. In both cases, you got your shutdown guy and an elite passer, even if you want to argue none of those four is an 'ace.' Same in Florida with Ekholm and Forsling.
I know they’re saving the Poolman money for the trade deadline but I think they’ll need help on D before then. I like their forward group but I think could have gotten another D instead of all the forwards. Maybe they’ll use one that’s not working out in a trade too… not a lot of cap room unfortunately
I think the story of this year is going to be the emergence of DeBrusk as a major star, eclipsing Petey, and Canucks fans are going to be very pleasantly surprised by this development, while also not liking it much that this guy they didn't think too much about before the season is making Petey and his contract look bad. You know, a typical Vancouver fan situation: happy but sad at the same time.
Not a fucking chance man.brusky is a lovely complimentary piece. Petey is a franchise player in the same category as Hughes. He has a legit shot at eclipsing henrik Sedins all time points record by the end of his career. If u dont believe me go look at his and henriks numbers by age
In my opinion, I don’t think enough attention is being paid to Demko’s injury history. Yes, I understand that the sky is not falling and that Demko will return, but I also think that another serious injury this season (like he’s had in every other season), and the Canucks will have to consider other options if they believe that their Cup window is open now. Hopefully, this conversation will be irrelevant nine months from now.
Contender, weak division and conference, the forward group is deep enough, the goalies are good enough, defense first pair is also solid, but overall it lacks a little depth ... if Demko is healthy and does what he does best anything can happen in the playoffs. Maybe Garland gets dealt for some defensive depth.
Hughes and Hronek...decent pairing???!!!! That's the understatement of the year. They are a phenomenal pairing, Hughes won the norris, statistically they were in the top 5 in the NHL in several categories. The way you downplay the Canucks is hilarious. Watch tthe canucks clean house this year including your beloved Stars
If the Cunucks made a trade with Montreal for one of the depth defensemen, who would want and what would the trade price be? I only say this as the habs have too many players coming up and not enough spots to play them. I didn’t think the likes of struble/barron would be replaceable this soon, but here we are and I’d rather they not loose them on waivers for nothing.
Garland was in rumors forever, now that the Canucks have somewhat proven that they are contenders idk if he would want to be moved, he has a decent line. Problem is, in MTL he’s not guaranteed to be in the top6 either, Roy or Newhook could be a better fit with Dach and Laine.
Lankin might be one of the best backups, but he still is a backup. That's s fine though, as Sivols is probably too good for the AHL, but another yr in the AhL wouldn't hurt Sivs
Vancouver did not have a lot of injuries last year. Let us hope the Canucks do not fall back to being injury prone. Here is hoping it will be a good season and not the bottom dwelling Canucks.
Playoffs for me. If they can make it to the Western Conference Final that would be a step in the right direction and with some puck luck and injury luck they could sneak into the Stanley Cup Final.
I think the Canucks are certainly in the play of contenders. Do I think they did enough to advance past their 2nd round exit from last year? Not really.
Shooting percentage was well above average for almost all their centres. I don’t think that’s sustainable. The latest of Demko is an ongoing injury that will likely linger the remainder of his career, meaning he will be a big question mark, pretty much forever. If Pettersson shows up big this year to offset the regression from the rest of the team, I think they’ll land 3rd in the pacific and maybe make it through round 1 again.
I think its funny watching the spin this year after last year. Last year canucks fans were very cautiously optimistic, thinking about maybe making the playoffs, while the rest of the hockey world thought they were awful. This year, canucks fans are very cautiously optimistic, fairly confident in making the playoffs, while the rest of the hockey world appears to be picking between them, Dallas, Edmonton, and Colorado to come out of the west.
Contenders, solid management, coaches, excellent pickup in lankinen for depth especially at 875,000 a year their draft picks are close to cracking the line up, especially on defence. GO CANUCKS!
you don't 'spread the energy around' on a very successful, in-sync line. All the famous lines in history were kept together (thus the naming of the line) because they were better together than apart. It's like trading Gretzky for 8 average players. You don't dilute - you build
I think Vancouver will definitely be a playoff team, but them doing so well with, let's be honest, a mediocre roster, kinda shows how truly awful the west was last season.
They over achieved last season, Petterson is exactly who he has been ( very over rated and certainly not worth 11.6). Last year was an anomaly and Vancouver barely makes the playoffs

If Demko misses a lot of the season, then comes back with a month left for warmup, that could be a setup for a really strong playoff for him.

I don't get why we're talking about "What if Boeser had puck luck would he have hit 50" he shot 19% he had 40 BECAUSE he had puck luck.
Some of that is because of where he plays on the power play, similar to Reinhart. But yeah 50 is a bit much, hoping for 35 a season from him.

Problem is, in MTL he’s not guaranteed to be in the top6 either, Roy or Newhook could be a better fit with Dach and Laine.
Contenders
I think the Canucks run into the oilers again, regardless of round, and have a tough time.
Not with demko in net.
They’ll be a playoff team (Top 3 in the Pacific alongside the Knights and Oilers), but how far they go is the real question.
Knights are gonna struggle this year
I think they will drop out this year. Hope they do well
I know we are only 3 pre-season games in but…I don’t “feel” the same way as last year. Why?
Dont they also have Di Giueseppe?
Dallas is the one off, watcth them get managed this year by Vancouver and the Oilers, LV ans all the California teams.
Gonna be a good season but I don't think we will see as good a year as last year
I thought picking up Lankinen was a great move and also surprised he was still available and for cheap.
Lankin might be one of the best backups, but he still is a backup. That's s fine though, as Sivols is probably too good for the AHL, but another yr in the AhL wouldn't hurt Sivs
Contender let's go!
Deep run and possibly cup winners imo.
Canucks have a lot of depth actually. I feel Juulsen is overlooked.
@@vancitycanucks he over aggressive sometime when he not he good
Not without a healthy Demko and a bonafide 2nd defensive pairing.
Feels like we have several players at risk of not clearing waivers. What do you think of that?
I think the Canucks are certainly in the play of contenders. Do I think they did enough to advance past their 2nd round exit from last year? Not really.
I found that d petty was giving up the puck in his own end and I didsee him fight to get the. Puck back
i think they are as well
Miller has had 2 100 pt seasons - what’s changed ?
One top pairing defenseman at the deadline and they could get to the finals
Shooting percentage was well above average for almost all their centres. I don’t think that’s sustainable. The latest of Demko is an ongoing injury that will likely linger the remainder of his career, meaning he will be a big question mark, pretty much forever.
If Pettersson shows up big this year to offset the regression from the rest of the team, I think they’ll land 3rd in the pacific and maybe make it through round 1 again.
Teddy Blueger is your best forward best at least the 1C here
I think its funny watching the spin this year after last year.
What you don’t mention the coaching, management and the team Moral right now.
Sprong looks good
Contenders, solid management, coaches, excellent pickup in lankinen for depth especially at 875,000 a year their draft picks are close to cracking the line up, especially on defence. GO CANUCKS!
Can we say no All Star game this year?
There isn't one, no.
you don't 'spread the energy around' on a very successful, in-sync line. All the famous lines in history were kept together (thus the naming of the line) because they were better together than apart. It's like trading Gretzky for 8 average players. You don't dilute - you build
It's a third line. If they're all playing that well, you push those players into top six roles.
D’Lias Pettersson!
They have Tocchet...they'll win games
Canucks, contenders or pretenders? Perhaps they'll be contenders to BE pretenders 🙃
Please noooooo 😂
LA finally gets a round 1 win
@@jamess1021 except the captain stated they will stop playing 1:3:1 which was Canucks kryptonite
Dark horse that just falls outside top 4 at the moment
You forgot to mention Aman in depth section..
Purely a fourth line option, not a needle mover.
@@TheHockeyGuy I agree but he is more experienced than Smith or Klimovich.. better option than either of them imo
Contender and on pretender otherwise!
They have coaching, need goaltending and need to score more than 2 goal games. It almost worked against EDM, but they still lost
I miss demko.
Go Canucks Go
Just below contender status
Why not do this for all the other teams
Because not every team can be argued as a contender.
The Vancouver Canucks are contenders for sure, but I do agree that they could use another top 4 defender to really push them over the edge
if canucks gets in playoffs they are contender then😄
Without. Demko pretender with demko contender it’s that simple
Another monthly video about Shannon saying the Canucks aren’t gunna win a cup in his life time
I think Vancouver will definitely be a playoff team, but them doing so well with, let's be honest, a mediocre roster, kinda shows how truly awful the west was last season.
Yeah a mediocre roster. 6 of them in the all star game. Good job bud.
They’ll pretend to contend.
If Demko not healthy and they over achieved at the beginning of season 2nd subpar 😂
Contender
They over achieved last season, Petterson is exactly who he has been ( very over rated and certainly not worth 11.6). Last year was an anomaly and Vancouver barely makes the playoffs
you root for Dallas? Later dude
Hard to take this seriously when you don't even mention Aatu Raty
Last season they overachieved by a lot, I don’t expect them to win the division again but we ought to play that 2-3 playoff matchup
