Where do you throw it away after? Does it make a mess when you are trying to pick it up? We are about to move into an apt with a small patio so it might work for us but there is no door to the outside from the patio so we would have to bring the whole contraption back through the house. MIght be too messy.
+Amy Kippin it's definitely not a super enjoyable clean up lol we would put on gloves, roll it up, & place it in a large bag to carry it down to recycle. If not it would be pretty messy so it depends on how comfortable you are with doing that. I hope that helps! ☺️
The one problem we have, my dog is 14 and not a puppy. Why is she not potty trained yet you ask? lol She has been on a medication for over 10 years for chronic bronchitis which acts like a diuretic. We take her out a million times a day and she still pees inside (mostly at night). Some days are worse than others. We have always has had tile floors and puppy pads and for the most part she hits the pad but she likes to go on door mats and bathroom rugs when we forget to shut the doors at night. We have even tried diapers but the amount of times she has to go out in one day becomes such a hassle taking it on and off. It's hard. We love her. She is 10 lbs of spoiled rotten rat terrier. But it's hard.
Amy Kippin sounds like you love your dog just like I love mine. My dog is totally potty trained so I have no issues but with the condition your dog has maybe it be possible to keep him or her on linoleum away from rugs
@@HeatherMoxieDIYed Does it break apart when you roll it up when cleaning up? Did you have issues with urine soaking through onto the crate pad? And what do you use to clean the crate pad?
A small addition could be to drill several small holes in the center so you can put a catch bowl underneath it. This way you can rinse the grass clean regularly and the dirty water will just drain into your catch to be emptied (instead of draining all over your patio/flooring). 😊
We are building this for our big boy who has really bad hips and has a hard time walking to the potty spots outside, but we are attaching a hose to feed into the bushes so he can go whenever he needs and we won't have to replace it so often!
This is a great idea. I have always hated the idea of dogs holding their pee or poo all day until you get home. That can be 8-12 hours. Not good for the bladder and can lead to infection. Or if you want to sleep in or is sick and don't feel like getting up to let them out to go potty, this is great also.
I put a drainage system with dirt about 4 inches high and then laid the sod down watered it and let it settle for while. I wanted a permanent solution so I bought grass seed and other material to repair the grass over time as the drainage system cleans out the gunk
We used a Step 2 kids sandbox, drilled a few tiny drainage holes underneath (this is on our balcony off master bedroom on a single house - may not want drainage holes if your balcony is above someone else's patio : ), then we filled it with mulch to avoid the need to replace sod so often. It is about 4 inches tall, but not a big deal to our 65 lb. female Boxer mix. I clean up any solid waste daily and flush down the toilet, which is about 10 ft. away. I use a 30 gal. trash bag about 3x per year to shovel out part of the mulch and mix in fresh. One could replace all of it or do it less often or not at all - depending on the weather, how many pets you have using it, etc. The mulch can get a little funky after a few months, that's why I choose to do it. Our girl was completely perplexed by this whole concept at first, but had stopped using the patio door inserted doggie door off our family room where we had a mulched area penned in for her. We live near the woods and believe something scared her at night as she stopped going out at night and began having accidents. May be TMI, but since our area is secluded, my husband just took her out one night, peed in the box himself, and then she couldn't wait to get in there and claim her territory! The sandbox is super heavy duty and I got mine on eBay for about $60. The mulch is about $4 per bag. The sandbox also came with a lid which we don't currently use, but is nice to know we have in case we needed to use it for some reason.
Thank you so much for explaining how you do it, I love the mulch idea thank you! I was thinking dirt or something to keep the sod going but mulch smart.
I used a box of borax$6 mixed with Kitty litter under a sheet of natural recycled cardboard and replace grass as needed This avoiding flyes and odors if indoors. Believe me my senior dog got uti and had to pee often so this helped her heal.
The seems like a hassle to buy new grass every 2 weeks... get it saves plastic but I think making it over a few inches of soil in a planter box would work better.
This is such a great idea, Thanks!! We are moving into a condo from a house. I don't like the potty pads with fake grass because I feel like they stink, so I was looking at Fresh Patch, which is expensive. I'm going to do this instead. I never thought of getting sod.

Awesome!! We were ordering grass patches from doggielawn and we have been paying 32, now up to almost 45 bucks a grass patch! She goes through one every 2 weeks. Used to go through one in one week!! We already have a nice thick 2x4 plastic liner for it so I'm definetly going to get a roll of sod to use from now on! SO much cheaper!!👏👏👏
There are so many pot grow shops now, one could get hydroponic mats of jute or coir, grass seed, and grow your own pee pads as often as necessary!! Grow them in manageable sizes that you can take outside and water on your lawn or driveway occasionally once they are being used by your pet. Should last longer too.
Thank you very much for your interesting video! About the disposal of the sod: how about using a washable carpet? We have several of them indoors as an emergency measure for new/ill dogs. They aren't very cheap, but come in rather acceptable designs (even grass), last very long and you just put them into the washing machine (60 C) and dryer. Originally they are intended for keeping the dirt and moisture out in shop entrances. They come in thin or thick.. Friends use sod, they put it onto their garden compost (if you plan compost right, the garden bits won't smell).
I wonder if you can grow grass if you found a deep enough pan and used soil. Enough to where you didn't have to replace the grass.. but then again I'm not sure if twice daily use for a medium dog would make that impossible
I am experimenting with thin layers of potting soil and I found that yes it does last a little longer. However its crucial to rinse !!!!_lightly_!!!!! after they pee or else you will get dead spots that get swampy and stink. It's a constant battle to not get it too wet thought so be mindful.

@@PoorGirlsGuide Did you buy the sod at Star? How did it work out? I'm thinking of buying some next weekend if they have rolls of it like the video. Especially if it's 2 feet for $5 as the person above said.
@@profduck715 I did buy it there! It was that cheap too. I ended up making a small round patch of grass for my kitty, it lasted about a month but I over-watered it and threw it out because I had a gnat army camping out in it. I'd do it again but this time in a larger container, preferably one the same size as the sod patch because cutting sod with a box cutter (what I did) isn't really fun lol
Awesome idea. I think this would also be a good sensory tool for children on the spectrum or those with sensory processing disorder. Thank you so much.
I am getting a small dog the size of a Yorkie and I saw a trailer like this in Ikea it's actually a shoe holder that you put at the door and it would be perfect because my puppy will be so small I'm so excited thank you
Do you notice extra water/liquids building up underneath after you water it everyday or does the sod soak it up? Also, what's the reason for the plywood and wheels? Is it just to elevate it more and make it easy to move around? I was going to invest in the porch potty but it's so expensive so please let me know. Thanks!!!
Denise Aberin I was thinking the same thing. What about putting a metal grate between the sod and tray, and putting kitty litter on the tray? That way it soaks up the liquids so maybe it's less messy when you have to go to change out the sod?

Can you use fake grass with puppy pad underneath it? Where I live you csn only buy sod 3 months out of the yr. I've seen similar items on ebay that's fake grass on a plastic bed with 2 inch high sides for a lot of money snd the recommend to use a puppy pad for the large size indoor fake grass potty matt.
I've been looking for something like this....The services are entirely too expensive but this seems like it's a great, affordable alternative. I have a yorkie so this seems like it'd work great for us. I was initially thinking of just "growing" the grass in a box, but from the other videos and resources I've seen about the sod it seems like that wouldn't be a great idea because of the smell? Any thoughts on why you wouldn't just grow the grass vs buying new sod every few weeks?
I know replacing it every three weeks is because the grass will die eventually, since the pet urine kills it, but it may take longer depending on your dog. If you can maintain the grass for longer without it getting smelly or dying then go for it! Re: growing the grass vs buying it, I would imagine the grass takes longer to grow than it would die off, unless you've got very green thumbs! Plus the sod is inexpensive and easy to roll out a new piece each time. But more power to you if you can grow your own.
I think she has to replace the sod because she didn't put in a hole for drainage so she can't really rinse the urine from the grass. Putting in a drainage hole I think will eliminate the need to replace the sod so quickly and also eliminate the odor. I plan on making one for my 16 year old Yorkie as we live in a second floor apartment
I thought I was the only one that came up with this brilliant idea I do the same exact thing for my 10 x 10 dog kennel without the wheels on the plywood though works like a champ and keep things clean😎😜
I have so many questions, like this, and about the smell. She's not answering them though :( I'm going to make this and not use the wheels. I dont really see the point of the wheels unless you are moving it around alot.
Laura Gameson it WILL smell after a while ONLY IF YOU DON'T RINSE IT. I ordered a porch potty and I had no trouble with the sod smelling because there was a draining system. but this doesn't have one, butt you could make 1 hole in the middle and place a large basin under it to catch the water when you're rinsing it out. I hope this helped.
You could go to Petsafe. com and buy a PetLoo that really does everything you need and also you can use Whiff Off to eliminate the odor. The PETLOO doesn't stink if you rinse properly. There are three sizes to choose from. They're super sturdy. Petsafe also sells the best Doggie doors on the market IMO.
I want to do this but I want it slanted at the end so when my dog pees I can water it down and it all drains to one side out the patio. I live on the first floor and my patio is covered halfway and there's 20ft trees infront of the patio so noone can see and there's no other apartments around. I want it to drain out into the side of the patio where I plan to put rocks going downhill(there is also a hill infront of my patio that is filled with trees) so itll just drain to where it sould be drained to. Hopefully I won't have to replace the grass as much.
I would like to take a 8 x 10 faux turf for my patio for Rat Terrier. I want to make drainage holes so I'm able to clean BUT I can't figure out an 8x10 plastic tray that keep the ped contained not on wood patio floor. Any ideas????
+jolieannable the climate where we live helped to dry out the sod whenever we would "water". If you live in a humid area I would consider where you place it & if it would be the best option for you.
I know this is an older video but is the grass not completely saturated with urine when you go to dispose of it? That's what I'm most if ish about is the idea of pulling us the sod to a pool of dog pee underneath
Thank you for sharing this! FreshPatch and DoggieLawn is a great way for someone to make money and paying 40.00 every 2 weeks is ridiculous to me. All the things to make this are available and cheaper. So you get a little dirt under your nails...
+Michelle Downam It might work if you used a smaller tray. While the kennel tray is durable plastic it still bends when moved/lifted. With the weight of the sod it wouldn't hold up well on the wheels. If you skip the wheels you could definitely skip the plywood. I have boys so that's not an option lol
Oh okay. :) My little guy is just small at 4 pounds and a yorkie, so I was wondering about making it smaller and on the ground instead of the wheels and plywood. :) thank you so much.
Michelle Stuff did this work for you? My baby is 4lbs. I don’t think I need the wheels & plywood. I also think I can put kitty litter under the sod to soak up urine & help with smell.
This is awesome! What do you do when its winter though? Currently in an apartment where the elevator isn't working properly and can't always get my dogs outside. Trying to get them retrained for a designated spot.
We are about to move into an apartment our dog is 10yrs old an used to living in a house with a yard .. Will this be ok to use Shaw we could teach him..maybe?
Hi Vanessa, I was typically able to find sod at Lowe's or Home Depot. I'm not sure if this may have changed, but since we're in a different living situation I no longer use this project.
Hey Sean, sorry for the late reply. Our doggy door insert was given to us by my older sister when she no longer needed it for her pup. But I believe they found it either on Amazon or at Petco.
Good idea...I think I might try with some modifications. Maybe using fake grass on top of a plastic grate (on top of the tray) and add a small drain hose. I like the idea of a rolling base so it can be moved and just using kennel tray. :-)
Thereasa Huff Fake grass is a fail. I have tried it and it is almost impossible to get the urine smell out. If you live in an apartment without an outdoor place where you can use a garden hose it would be horrible to clean indoors. I have the basic concept but instead of grass I use sheets of newspaper. Easy to dispose of in the garbage. Where would you dispose of the grass and soil after it is used if you live in an apartment.

Delores Emeagi I was thinking the same too
portability bring it inside the house and stuff
Delores Emeagi the wood is to put the wheels so it could role u don’t really needed but it would be easier instead of picking it up
Mold will start to develop if you don't have a vent. Placing it on wheels insures the area underneath stays dry and doesn't ruin your deck.
Does it attract flies or other bugs?
Yes
How often do you change the grass? I know grass died because of pee...
Where do you get the grass from
Lowes sells rolls of sod
omg yesss!!! i live in an appartimate and let me tell you that it is such a hassle to have to take you dog for a walk every hour!!!!!
How would you replace the sod? Just throw a bunch of soil grass into a garbage bag?
Good idea for apartment pets👍🏼👍🏼
Can you use fake grass with puppy pad underneath it? Where I live you csn only buy sod 3 months out of the yr. I've seen similar items on ebay that's fake grass on a plastic bed with 2 inch high sides for a lot of money snd the recommend to use a puppy pad for the large size indoor fake grass potty matt.
What kind of sod should be used? can i drill holes in the bottom for drainage?
I've been looking for something like this....The services are entirely too expensive but this seems like it's a great, affordable alternative. I have a yorkie so this seems like it'd work great for us.
I was initially thinking of just "growing" the grass in a box, but from the other videos and resources I've seen about the sod it seems like that wouldn't be a great idea because of the smell? Any thoughts on why you wouldn't just grow the grass vs buying new sod every few weeks?
I wish she would answer our questions before we make this!! And why do you need to change the sod every three weeks?
Using short risers to allow for drainage
Does the grass absorb the urine? Or do you have drainage? Or do you have to spill it out once in a while?
Where can you buy sod in the north all winter?
Do you have to cut the grass?
Depends on the size of your animal cage tray
I thought I was the only one that came up with this brilliant idea I do the same exact thing for my 10 x 10 dog kennel without the wheels on the plywood though works like a champ and keep things clean😎😜
What's the point of the wheels and wood? Couldn't it work with just the plastic and grass part?
Can this system work with just the kennel tray and sod? What are the benefits of adding the wood and wheels?
I have so many questions, like this, and about the smell. She's not answering them though :(
I'm going to make this and not use the wheels.
Where can I buy the roll of sod?
+Cole's Mix you can usually find it at home depot or Lowe's. But any large hardware/home improvement store should have them ☺️
how long would you use this for? maybe until pup is 1 year old and then you would walk them twice every day? just looking for some guidance?
Sad if you only take the pup out twice a day to pee. Our dog goes out about every couple hours and more as a puppy.
What a great idea. Glad it’s working well for your dogs
How do you drain it? (Eventually gets full of pee) Thnx
This is exactly what I was looking for, I am so excited to try this! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
Does it roll around
I would like to take a 8 x 10 faux turf for my patio for Rat Terrier. I want to make drainage holes so I'm able to clean BUT I can't figure out an 8x10 plastic tray that keep the ped contained not on wood patio floor. Any ideas????
Build a frame out of wood and use a pool liner.
Doesn't it smell after a few days? Where do you dispose of the old sod after you replace it with new?
+jolieannable the climate where we live helped to dry out the sod whenever we would "water". If you live in a humid area I would consider where you place it & if it would be the best option for you.
How much was this project in total?
I know this is an older video but is the grass not completely saturated with urine when you go to dispose of it? That's what I'm most if ish about is the idea of pulling us the sod to a pool of dog pee underneath
Wow great idea. Ty for sharing
what kind of grass is it?
A really good idea..for people like me that lives in a apartment.
Thank you so much. Greetings from Guadalajara Jalisco México
Very cute and practical idea thanks for sharing
Where did you get sod this size?
where do you buy sod?
Thank you for sharing this! FreshPatch and DoggieLawn is a great way for someone to make money and paying 40.00 every 2 weeks is ridiculous to me. All the things to make this are available and cheaper. So you get a little dirt under your nails...
Hows the clean up and how long does this last
Did she say how much the roll of sod was? Didn't catch that
Do you have to use the plywood or could you just use the kenneltray and roll of sod?
+Michelle Downam It might work if you used a smaller tray. While the kennel tray is durable plastic it still bends when moved/lifted. With the weight of the sod it wouldn't hold up well on the wheels. If you skip the wheels you could definitely skip the plywood. I have boys so that's not an option lol
Oh okay. :) My little guy is just small at 4 pounds and a yorkie, so I was wondering about making it smaller and on the ground instead of the wheels and plywood. :) thank you so much.
I don't have a dog so I don't know, but why is that not an option because you have boys?
@@rithe07 that's what I'm wondering
Michelle Stuff did this work for you? My baby is 4lbs. I don’t think I need the wheels & plywood. I also think I can put kitty litter under the sod to soak up urine & help with smell.
So is the urine absorbed by the grass?
This is awesome! What do you do when its winter though? Currently in an apartment where the elevator isn't working properly and can't always get my dogs outside. Trying to get them retrained for a designated spot.
Is this safe for puppies that haven’t had all their vaccines yet
We are about to move into an apartment our dog is 10yrs old an used to living in a house with a yard ..
Will this be ok to use Shaw we could teach him..maybe?
Dogs are adaptable, although my dog couldn't get used to gravel so I'm going to buy her some sod
I'm definitely going to have to try this! Thanks for sharing ❤️
+Vivian Escobar you're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Where do you get the patch of grass year round?
Hi Vanessa, I was typically able to find sod at Lowe's or Home Depot. I'm not sure if this may have changed, but since we're in a different living situation I no longer use this project.
where did you get the doggie door sliding glass insert?
Where did you buy the SOD for $6?
Where can I get the sod ?
