    I find it astounding that the over 80 year-old DC-3 design, improved of course but not radically, has good short and rough field performance with only split flaps. This version can carry a load almost equal to its weight, fly at a respectable speed and has essentially infinite fatigue life. Basler have done something wonderful. I hope there's enough DC-3 airframes left to be converted.

      Surprisingly these old DC 3 "Gooney Birds" are still around. Check out this D Day Bird and the Basler Air connection to her re birth:

      Basler didn't come up with this combination, most of it had been done prior by others, but Basler has been the most successful at marketing. There is still lots to be gained by completely redesigning the wing using modern design methods to maximize performance, but so far no one has gone to those extents yet. There were 400 airframes suitable for conversion in 2000, but have not seen more up to date numbers. Another company called Preferred Turbine 3 offers a similar modification.

      @MidnightVisions 5 лет назад +1

      @John Texas You sound like your between 9 and 14 years old. There is noting that I said that takes away from what Baser has accomplished with its DC-3 / BT-67 modifications program. Whatever you think I said that diminishes that is all in your head.

    I like to think of the BT-67like a perfectly executed restomod. The look and character of a classic, the performance and reliability of a modern vehicle.

    Great video! I only got a few hours in the DC-3 and the cockpit and airplane weren't nearly as slick as this one. I was as young as the copilot though. Happy landings guys.

    A troca do propulsor original por uma turbina, tira a originalidade do lendário DC-3, mas o cockpit ficou lindo. Deu um ar de modernidade. Eu gostei.

      Is it possible for Basler to buy the type certificate from the original company or maybe to join forces with Boeing to keep producing the turbine DC-3s, just like the DHC-515 (originally CL-145)?

    When the captain takes his eyes off the checklist...what's there to prevent him from missing a checklist item..

    • @RangerRaider
      @RangerRaider  5 месяцев назад

      That’s a good question. For a normal checklist we would have lots of leniency to run it from memory and back it with the checklist. An imperfect solution that could only be mitigated through an electronic checklist. Most operators would be comfortable doing what we did here.

    I take it that this aircraft is no longer underpowered with the engine replacements?

    • @RangerRaider
      @RangerRaider  Год назад

      Yeah, it was definitely not underpowered with the PT6-67R. 1281shp per engine.

  • @cgcgundersen
    @cgcgundersen 10 лет назад +7

    Yup you're right the engine isn't properly attached to the plane, but they said screw it let's take off anyway.

    • @oceanblu5252
      @oceanblu5252 9 лет назад +1

      cgcgundersen If the engine wasn't properly mounted to the plane, how would they takeoff? The engines would just fall off. Ever seen American Flight 191? Engines weren't properly attached during maintenance and the #1 engine blew off during rotation. The people at Basler know what they're doing. Not one of these has crashed. (At least to my knowledge) I'd like to see your proof that the engines weren't properly attached.

      @cgcgundersen 9 лет назад +9

  • @Fordiesel69

    Can someone speculate what the vibration / grinding is when the left turbine spools up, and the entire time it is running? It sounds like the engine is not mounted properly to the airframe, or maybe the camera was touching the fuselage?

    • @RangerRaider
      @RangerRaider  10 лет назад +21

      The grinding that you hear, isn't grinding. The GoPro was mounted to a bulkhead that houses the hydraulic accumulator. The noise is the engine driven hydraulic pump as pressure builds in the accumulator.

    Hi, nice video although it could be shorter. I wonder if somebody could explain the role of the red and white levers at the center. It is clear that the black levers at the left are accelerator, the red should control the fuel or the mixture of fuel or something like that. What are the whites one?.

    • @RangerRaider
      @RangerRaider  3 года назад +2

      Hi Juan, the red levers are known as condition levers and they do control fuel. However, they are unlike piston engines where you’re able to control mixture. In the case of the Basler the condition lever has two positions, run and off. The white levers are the propeller controls. And as you mentioned the black are the power levers. Hope that helps.

    I notice it doesn't have the BASLER logo on the yokes like N131PR does ....... I was lucky enough to have N131PR land and come to the tarmac to meet me ( I was taking photos of it ) the BASLER TURBO CONVERSION LLC Chief pilot Andy Ferguson and AIRTEC's pilot Garibaldi Pabon showed me the plane . answered a few questions and Andy took my pic in the Left Seat ;) ;) on June 20, 2020 at the Easton Airport, Easton, Md ...... They are flying out of St. Mary's ........... 131 and 141 have both been sold as of 8/15/2020. N161PR continues to go out on missions all across the country and N115U which isn't AIRTEC but is also at St. Mary's Airport in Hollywood or Lexington Park, Md reverts back to the owner the end of Sept. when lease runs out. Are you still flying them Richard Ross ?

    • @RangerRaider
      @RangerRaider  4 года назад

      Curtis Brandt I’m not sure if Rick is still flying or not. As for the Basler logo that could be something they’ve been doing with the newer conversions. If I remember correctly at one point TGI and TGX had Pratt and Whitney logos on the yoke. Been awhile since I’ve flown them, so not certain on that.

    Can anyone tell me what the Captain is putting up against the side window at the 14:50 mark?

    • @RangerRaider
      @RangerRaider  9 лет назад +7

      +Lawrence Musci Good eyes. We do survey work and the equipment is sensitive to prop RPM's. So they need to be consistent every flight. It's an optical digital tachometer.

  • @jpag8764
    @jpag8764 7 лет назад

    I'm just wondering why the Captain is running the checklist? Isn't that the job of the person in the right seat, at least on the ground. Then the pilot monitoring does it in the air.

    • @RangerRaider
      @RangerRaider  7 лет назад +2

      Gerald Penn Hi Gerald, that's a good point. In most company SOP, that's the case. However, we did it differently on the DC3 as both Captain and FO are able to taxi the aircraft.
