Unlocking The FULL POWER Of The Nintendo DS Lite- Why You Should Get One In 2023

- Considering Nintendo 3DS modding is quite popular, I wanted to see how the Nintendo DS Lite would hold up in the year 2023. With classic games like New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart DS, and all of the Pokemon games, it's an excellent system. But the thing is, it's actually MORE capable and powerful than you think! It even allows for homebrew!
Here's where I got the Nintendo DS Lite Shell!

Okay, so little known fact, but when booting a DS or Virtual Console game on 3DS, hold down START to open the game in its native resolution without ugly upscaling. GB and GBC even have nice little borders!
pretty useless to me. i can understand wanting to play in its native resolution, but it makes the games really tiny and hard to see if you dont have an XL model, and if your 3ds or 2ds IS XL, why did you buy it extra large with the bigger screen just to not use the bigger screen????. plus you can just use twilight menu to use a patch that makes the games pixel perfect while still being upscaled
I got my DS back in 2009 with Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, my most played game on that system. Didn't know this system allowed for homebrew, doesn't look like the best option for emulation though. I do love the shells, it reminds me of my transparent purple Nintendo 64 I had growing up. I hope Nintendo goes back to making transparent looking systems in the future.
GameBoy Emulation is good. I had a friend back in high school who emulated Pokemon Green on his original fat DS and it worked like a charm :D For GameBoy Emulation it's very nice. It's nice because you don't have to tamper with the original hardware of the DS Lite to get mods for it thanks to R4 where the 3DS you need to tamper with the original hardware and get custom firmware and software into it to be able to actually continue to get these Legacy games outside Virtual Console :)
@@pokeguitaristjake6300wtf are you talking about? 3ds is easily softmoded, no need to mess with the hardware. And no need to emulate Gameboy games, the ds up to the 3ds supports it natively, you need to load it on the system of course, but it will play no different than it would on original hardware.
Plenty of native 8/16bit emulators on ds makes you play wonderswan and PC engine game gear library on the go
@@sisamusudroka3000 NDS is still better that 3DS when it comes to GBA emulation. fits the pixels better. it lalso loads way faster.
@@philipvalenzuela4969 I know, I was replying to someone who didn't know what he was talking about concerning 3ds

I still remember getting my first DS lite in 2010 and only having 3 games for the longest time
Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros.
literally the same three games as me when I received my DS lite way back
The best games to have
Honestly that’s the best DS lite starter kit right there lol then move on to Pokémon and more haha
Came for what the title said and fell asleep during the painfully long monotone history of the Nintendo DS that nobody asked for 😂
I remember having a black DS Lite, and sunk so many hours into games like Mario 64 DS, Mario Party and Kart DS, Mario & Luigi: BIS and so much more (latter being one of my favorite games ever). I played it so much that it broke.
I remember in elementary school, my mom gave me a DSi XL as a gift for getting straight As on my report card. A great present and upgrade.
I went from playing a DS Lite to a Nintendo Switch in 2017! Soulsilver is one of the best games if not the best pokemon game ever made! The DS Lite is still one of the best handhelds ever made!
I have to agree with you there. Two whole regions and double the badges to collect! Have any pokemon you want follow you! Heartgold soulsilver have never been topped!!
honestly, all the ds pokemon games hold a special place in my heart
On the 3DS you can actually hold select when booting up a DS game to get a pixel perfect mode. Works for some other virtual console games like GB and GBC games on 3DS. This way you get none of that blur on it although you get a smaller screen. This has worked since the beginning on the 3DS
DSi screen is still better for DS games, tho.
I completely forgot about that and just did it. Such an awesome addition!
I find the DSi XL to be the best one because the screen doesn't stretch the games so it stays sharp while having more on a screen and you can hack it very easily to play DS,GBA,SNES,and more games off the SD card itself than an actual flashcart.
That's true I had one and I was very surprised how quick and easily I could hack it. Also the amount of games I could play. Not that much but still a pretty decent library. It can play Sega Master System, and even Sega Genesis and SNES games (kinda). But still a step up from the DS and DS Lite.
I actually had the R4 card when I was little back in the DS' heyday, which came pre-installed with 100 or so games on it. That's what allowed me to discover many of the games that I still enjoy to this day.
I have my original chunky DS from launch day, although I really don't like how hard to see the screens are these days, and until a couple of years ago I had been using my 3DS for DS games with the horrible scaling it applies. I then bought a DSi XL and the screen is amazing! I genuinely don't think there is a better way to play DS games, but it comes at the cost of GBA compatibility. For that I have an original GBA which I modded to add an IPS screen.
A modded dsi can also play gba games.
@@54356776 Anything can do anything. Usually when people talk about modding GBAs, it's for the express purpose of playing the actual carts.
It's because the DSi XLs have ips screens. The 3ds don't unless ur lucky enough your new 3ds xl has 1 or 2 ips screens.
And don't forget that a brand new Shantae game will release soon on the GBA!

Actually... Demeech has a point. I have some GBA games, but my GBA SP broke. The GBA SP is hella expensive. The DS Lite is miles more affordable, about half the price, while being a more durable piece of tech.
I’d say that unless you need the GBA slot or size is at an extreme premium, just get a DSi. However, both these are excellent value in 2023 and are gracefully ageing. The DS Lite’s clear shell was such an ingenious decision.
DSi costs more, and the functionality is less.
@@vhfgamer Well, I bought almost twenty DSi and a few DS Lite models recently and I paid around £20-30 for the DSi on average, unless they came in a bundle; and £15-20 for the DS Lites, but they are more difficult to find without faults as many have faulty hinges, screens and people pay a premium to turn them into Gameboy Macro. The screen, design and battery life are all improved on the DSi, so for a minor premium, they offer great value. The camera and WiFi function are not really useful in 2023, but the SD card slot means that modding is super easy.
@@ComeJesusChrist I looked into DSi modding because I have a Japanese one. It's non existent.
@@vhfgamernah it's plenty existent.if you look up dsi homebrew theres a guide for how to set it up. with stuff like unlaunch and twilightmenu++ you can do whatever you want and even play ds roms directly from the sd card without need of a flash cart. i have a japanese dsi as well and twilightmenu++ has a menu mode that emulates the appearance of the default dsi menu, but you can change the language
All of these cool custom parts that eXtremeRate offers makes me hope that someday they will sell custom OG 2011 3DS parts because I want to customize my 3DS so bad.
I also hope they do 2DS parts
Real. I just got a white o3ds, and I really wanna turn it into a Famicom look alike. It’d look pretty nice
3ds disassembly is nightmare compare to nds which is already difficult
i've heard. I don't feel comfortable with it.
That's why I'm considering buying another launch 3ds as a parts console to practice on.@@portnawak
The DS may be a powerhouse on its own, especially considering the nostalgia factor. However, I don’t see a single thing that a modded DS can do that a modded 3DS can’t. Therefore solidifying the term, “Anything the DS can do, the 3DS can do better, and look better doing it.”
a modded ds can't play 3ds games
not really a bad thing though since the ds to this day has a library to be reckoned with
@@TheEPICMarioBros2 Though the 3DS can play near all of said games.
Again, solidifying that term.
Technically there are some very slight compatibility-issues with GBA games that a 3DS has that a DS does not. But that is such a lol-thing. The 3DS can still run most GBA games without issue and a New3DS has more than enough power to run emulators to take care of the few games that it cannot run itself. So yeah, still no point in using a DS Lite over a 3DS, besides authentisism-reasons and/or the better batterylife.
I have issues running some ds rom games on 3Ds. Therefore I use both systems. I do love the circle pad more than the cross but would be awesome if the stick would be like a pa vita one.
@@lpfan4491My modded New 2DS XL can run few specific PS1 games through an emulator.
This video is awesome bro
Glad you liked it!
I'm actually planning to get 2 of them.
1 white and 1 black, so I can swap some parts of the shell.
Like black bottom and white top in the external part (Keeping black L and R buttons and black GBA slot cover)
White in the inside part with black borders around the screen.
Then, to match the GBA buttons, I'll do black d-pad and black A and B buttons. Then white X and Y.
I'll also use black screw covers, cause I like it.
For the other console will be viceversa.
I can do it, considering I like fixing consoles, and the DS Lite is kind of an easy task. Atm I have a complete black one, so I'm only missing the white one.
Can't wait to play Pokémon B&W on those 2 😂
I love swapping original shells and switch colors like this.
I once swapped shell on my Black & Blue 2DS and as he agreed, I took my friend's White & Red 2DS and did the swap.
Now he has a Black & Red one and I have a White & Blue one.
I love customizing things, so I'll consider buying some ExtremeRate products. Probably for some other repairs.
Love to see that someone still plays that console
a dude sent me an R4 card full of gameboy and NES games very impressed as well as 300 NDS games pre loaded.
The DSi was my very first real game system aside from the Wii: I will always remember and love it.
"And this is where I have to be transparent."
genius
What country do you live in @Demeech? My eyes were immediately drawn to that Pepsi Twist. It was my all-time favorite flavor of Pepsi, but in the United States it was only around for a couple of years before being discontinued in 2005.
The Pepsi Twist is from Greece! But I live in the United States.
Tip, if you can find a small used games store you can get ds lites for pretty cheap especially if you're willing to risk having to fix a broken one that they're selling for parts. I got a second DS Lite a few months back for $7.50 and after a little bit of work cleaning the contacts in the cartridge slot and changing out the battery it works better than my first DS Lite.
the 2000 ended and I didnt know, at least I learn something from this video in less than a minute.
I got one for 50 dollars. A better deal than the other 100$ consoles my local antique store was selling. And I keep around just for physical GBA games.
I absolutely love my ds lite, I was lucky to get one when it came out, but the console is an absolute beast, and i feel like it's very underrated considering the insane amount of games that came on the console, compared to the very limited library of the 3DS.
I've owned all 4 DS models, but I've got some kind of attachment to the Original Model as well as the Lite.
Just ordered a gold Triforce DS Lite. Excited to play Chibi Robo.
Yesterday i got a DSI and a nice grip for it so it feels like a controller and a cart with hundreds of games on it. DS is still a freaking amazing handheld and would highly suggest getting one to anyone thinking of getting a DS. The lite or DSI are both great options personally.
I'll probably stick to my homebrew-enabled DSi XL since I can just run things off of the built-in SD card reader with TWiLight Menu and I don't need to shell out for a potentially expensive or dodgy flashcart. I do need to fix my R button on there though. I've also got an AGS-001 for my GBA fix.
With that said, my grandmother does have a DS Lite and I've actually used it in the past. I might pinch it to transfer some Pokemon from FireRed to SoulSilver.
I have the dsi xl. It’s a blue and had a nerf protector case on it. I’ve modded it via sd card and have put tons of games on it. I would definitely recommend modding or getting flash carts for any of your old systems that arnt being officially supported anymore because it definitely lets you get some more use out of them then before.
bet will look in to doing this
I had a ds as a kid, and it ended up breaking on me, and since it was in a time before i was more versed on self repairs i just pitched it. I got super lucky, when my wifes cousin moved he left a box of cables for me and in it was a white ds lite, with pokemon diamond. It was one of the best little suprises ive ever gotten. Then some friends gave me their old ds'. I ended up getting a 2ds, 3ds xl, and a dsi from them. So far i modded the dsi, and have a beefy r4 card set up for the ds lite, just need to mod the 3ds and 2ds and ill be pretty much set at that point, eventually ill add a modded wii and switch to the collection, and maybe mod my wifes old gameboy advance sp. What im getting at is nintendo makes great handhelds lol
I just bought a mint condition polar white. Having a blast playing all the great games. Better off buying one now before eBay prices go crazy which they will.
The DS Lite is also my favorite handheld....i got 2 of these and a Gameboy Pocket, a Gameboy Advance SP, a Gameboy Color Pikachu Edition, an led modded V3 Gameboy Advance....makes a lot of fun to play with all of them in 2023, but my favorite as i say is the DS Lite ! 😎👍
Unrelated, but I'm really jealous of your Pepsi Twist. They stopped selling those years ago here in the banana republic.
guitar hero on tour is my reason for owning a ds lite
Nintendo DS Lite was the first game system I ever had and the last thing I remember my Mom and Dad bought me for my birthday as a couple. It’s super personal to me. I don’t think anyone can appreciate it more than I would. The creators of the game system would possibly be able to level with how much I love it. Being a 10 year old, I smashed it because Mario Party really upset me. The next console in my life was a GameCube. The only reason I would want a GameCube would be to play Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door, however, I’m in no rush to jump the gun on that because I hear that Nintendo has been working on getting that game to play on the Nintendo Switch in 2024. Gosh. I’m stoked about that still. I can’t wait! It’s the most nostalgic game out there for me. Hopefully The Simpsons Hit and Run comes to the switch as well.
Dude, I actually like the original "Phat" DS. It's such a nostalgic design. At the time it looked so futuristic. My younger brother had it at the time and I played it from time to time.
And sure, the lite also looks great. It's clean and modern looking, even now. But the original... That one has personality!
That being said, I have personal experience with reshelling the original DS and let me tell you: that plastic is quite brittle nowadays. It just breaks during disassembly.
Still, I'm about to buy an original DS for myself, just for the nostalgic design.
I owned all versions of the ds excluding the xl versions and the new version of the 3ds, fun times.
i have a crimson red i bought many years ago, that i put in a protective shell and screen saver on since the begining so it is now in really good condition,
I didn't grow up with a DS, only had a GBA as a kid, and honestly? I actually like the GBA's library more than the DS's...
I'd only get to play DS *Properly* when I finally got myself my lovely 3DS I still play on all the time~ But by then I didn't have much more growing up to do lol
And well, yeah, the DS is pretty good! I don't really mind the blurriness of playing it on 3DS much, but like, if I did find a cheap DSi, I'd get it and softmod it immediately, and that would become my main way of playing DS games! As for the lite, it's neat, but I'd not have much use for it... I'd still get it if I got a bargain locally but, yeah, I'd still default to playing DS games on my 3DS... Btw, I found that the 3DS battery lasts A LOT longer when playing DS and GBA games!
4:57 ok im watching this during class while playing my nintendo ds lite :3
had a gba sp before, but the red ds lite is what defined my childhood years from '08 - '11. should probably repair it, as it has a broken hinge and one of the speakers no longer works,
stellar console for sure. some of my fav games are; pokemon gens 4-5, of those platinum, soul silver and black are my favs, zelda spirit tracks, tetris ds, rhythm paradise, nsmb and bowser's inside story. certainly worth it to look into the system and its library if you never had one growing up, or if it was before your time. can't believe the system is almost 20 years old already
My favorite DS model is going to be the dsi, it's design is very sleek and the screens are beautiful
The nintendo DS Lite was my first console ever and I still sometimes use it to this day. Btw, do u know where can i buy a new battery? Bc mine is almost dead
You: "Which DS did you have growing up?"
Me: Getting my first DS in 2010, when I was 26 years old.
At any rate, I recommend Twilight Menu over an R4 card. R4 cards really suck down the battery life I've found, so try to avoid using any sort of flssh cart in any of my portable systems if I can avoid them.
“I’m sure most of us grew up playing Nintendo DS”… MF’er I grew up on OG Gameboy. I was a kid when Pokémon Red and Blue hit the market.
how do you go about emulation and getting the pokemon games cheaper ? ive recently bought a ds lite and im not too sure about dropping mad money on the pokemon ds games
Get a r4 card acquire roms "legally" put them on a sd card and put it in the r4 card and you should be good
if only Rockstar actually made a 3D game for the DS and not a top down
Got a DS than a DSi and the last DS system was a 3DS
As an adult now the perfect console to hide in the bathroom and spend 15 mins grinding some Pokémon
I got the original phat ds In blue when I was 8 in 2006 with new super Mario bros and sonic rush. I remember it came in the mail from GameStop but I couldnt use it for an extra two weeks because I got in trouble at school 😂. 2 years later I ended up getting the all black ds lite for Christmas while my older brother got the red and matte black one. My personal favorite was the all black I loved how shiny it was. It was also dope because before that I had a gameboy advance sp and I could play my games I already owned on it.
Oh boy, I miss my original Acekard 2 that I lost back in 2011 and the box/case of Pokemon blue rescue team then 2020 I lost my DS Lite somewhere in my house.
I have a ds lite loved it as a kid
that see through ds is lit!
my original ds lite broke randomly on me as a child, i was sitting in a chair playing something and a spring exploded out of the hinge at me lmfao
I had the original Nintendo DS when it first came out. I worked in a toy store and mine "fell off the truck." It rarely ever got played
Do you know of a reputable website where I can buy new LCD screens for my DS Lite? As a child, I fell with my knee on the bottom screen. Now the screen has a black screen and a purple glowing crack in the middle. I'm finally going to repair the DS Lite after 17 years. Please help me.
I have DSi I love it especially modded
I have officially fallen down the DS rabbit hole.
i reccomend purchasing one off ebay with a broken hinge if you are going to replace the shell as they tend to go for even cheaper.
i imagine they didnt release a transparent ds because they don't like people messing around with their hardware or even just seeing what's inside their systems.
Best to put Twilight Menu over stock firmware on r4 cards these days, but more faffing around but it offers a more customizable and seamless experience with better game and homebrew compatibility.
Veing able to not only run gba games and some dsiware on a lite is utter black magic to me, didn't think would be possible when I first dipped my toes into the DS's homebrew scene.
Ah yes, having virtual dogs on a handheld and leaving them for 10 years because you got a new PlayStation
Tried to make a comment but RUclips hid my comment after I typed it and then gave me an error when I went to edit my comment: Basically I got a Pikachu DS Lite in 2019 for pretty cheap on eBay, and pretty sure it's not the authentic model it's a 3D Printed version of that and that option exists for people who aren't smart enough like me to take apart your DS Lite and move it to a new shell :D
As for the R4 Cards, I will say it's something I have considered since it's a flash cart and you are not actually tampering with your own system's hardware engine. Have nothing against other people modding their hardware on their 3DS's but it's something that I take pride in seeing how far and how cool I can make my 3DS System without tampering with the actual hardware engine. I do have three 3DS's I bought before the eShop shutdown and then price increase, the original models to be exact, two purples and one blue, I plan on getting one of the purples and one of the blues installed with a 3DS Capture Card, and my other one for personal use. Bought all the eShop games on there before the eShop shutdown that I wanted, on all 3 systems (I am sad it slipped my mind the Smash 3DS DLC Roster lol RIP)
There is nothing wrong with modding or hacking your system especially this day in age where Nintendo is not preserving their legendary gaming library and only doing so behind a Subscription fee, and what happens when that Subscription service is gone??? I do take pride in my authentic hardware and actually really have been debating getting an R4 (one on DS and DS Lite and a separate one on 3DS) for a long while, and at some point now is the time to do so.
The DS Lite runs GameBoy Emulation through R4 so well, I had a friend from high school playing Pokemon Green on his phat DS. Just so you know, everyone!
Thanks for the video Demeech, just wanted to put my own personal thoughts (:
My favourite Console of all time is still the 3DS. It has a lot of good games, like mario and luigi 4 and 5, cool pokemon games, mario3d world, and even my favourite game of all time, Monsterhunter 4 Ultimate! Nintendo never really got this ammount of good quality games on the switch. The switch has great games, dont get me wrong, but the 3ds just has so much more!
The thing about then DS lite is that the buttons are mushy. The only ones that don't are start, select, R, and L. And as someone who plays the games a lot, those kinds o buttons arent good for long play times. I want a DSi XL
I had the ds lite and I was so desperate to get one that I made my mother buy one from the one in the pawnshop she goes to play her lottery games I just kept begging and begging lol
how is the gba library not as good as the ds? we have Super Mario advanced, Super Mario advanced 2, Super Mario advanced 3, Super Mario advanced 4, link to the past, minish cap, Sonic advance, Sonic advance 2, Sonic advance 3, doctor Mario plus puzzle league, wario land, wario ware, metroid fusion, zero mission, donkey kong country, donkey kong country 2, donkey kong country 3, Kirby and the amazing mirror, kirby nightmare in dreamland, advanced wars, castlevania circle of the moon, castlevania harmony of dissonance, castlevania aria of sorrow, mario vs donkey kong, mario kart super circuit, etc
I had way more fun with the gba games over the ds counter parts (new super mario, metroid prime, phantom hourglass, wario ware diy, dawn of sorrow (jk on that last one) also i did play mini mario and also kirby canvas curse and loved them but they're different than the normal games
The Nintendo DS is an absolute superior masterpiece
I missed the part where you ‘’unlocked’’ the full power 😂😂
i suggest picking up a gba flash cart if you want to access gba gbc and gb games on your ds
I picked up a Metallic Rose DS before work today for 20.00 with a game. Case is a little rough, I think this is a sign. Lol.
The DSi is the better version. It's often forgotten by people maybe because it came out in 2009 which was near the end of the Nintendo DS life cycle and it doesn't look too much different from the DS lite except it has a camera and a little bit more ram. It's like a prototype 3DS. Something in between a DS lite and a 3DS.
The best way to play DS AND 3DS games was with the New Nintendo 3DS XL
7:03 where did you get that custom theme from?
That design is what game consoles were evolving to
Mario 64 DS's Hat duplication bug:
Its worth it for non blurry screen.
“Even to this day”
Sad card on the way! I had the purple game boy color growing up, and the SP in College. Graduate school I bought the lite! At age 41 I just want to sit in a corner some where by myself a chill!
Do you still have them? I still play my Nintendo DS to this day!
DS pokemon games are GOATED
Shame the DS hasn't has the modding that the Gameboys have (yet). I mean you can get OLED screen for the gameboy color now, insane!
Dude ive owned 1 of every ds and 3ds system.ive broken almost all of them but it was an easy fix.
true but a 3ds is more powerful, pretty easy to mod, and has a HUGE library games with the ability of more emulation availability
I remember i got the light gray DS Lite, its was a banger with all the games. But I was a stupid little kid and lost it a few years later.
Sometimes there are worse fates than death itself...
I thought you said "Light gay DS Lite"
Ds Mario party is still my absolute favorite
Bro said 2009 was the last year of the 2000s 💀
just put a new battery in my DS lite and got multicarts and an R4 card again.
Just score a DS Lite for $12 but the screen is bit damaged 😢
Not sure if i want to change the screen since it's quite expensive
I still use my ttds card which is now 20 years old 😂.. with the og 2gb micro sd
I swear, y'all give the original Silver DS too much hate, It was my first portable and I bought it back in 2021 for only $40 and while it is defective now due to the issue I call the "Blue tinted screen of death", I still look back on it fondly, and all the notable DS Games are still playable on the original DS. The GBA games don't stick out like a sore thumb like the DS Lite, they fit perfect in the first slot. Also, come on, you have admit it the original is not that uncomfortable to hold and the stylus placement isn't that hard to get used to.
True. Some (many?) find the DS more comfortable, esp for long sessions, than the Lite.
You can get a Dsi for under 50$ as well
Are there emulators on r4 aside from gba’s and ds’s games? I know in ez flash and everdrive in gba side has one with custom firmware, but if r4 has emulators that those gba cartridges don’t support, i could say this would be a great entry level emulation device
Just like how people prefer the original GBA over the SP, I prefer my phat DS over the lite or DSi, the form factor is just more comfortable to my hands, when I played on the DS lite I would get cramps in my hands after long sessions, but on the phat DS it would have to be super long sessions almost where the batter was basically drained, before my hands started cramping up. Its such a pity that the phat DS does not have mods, or quality shells because I would like to fix mine up.
OG DS looks like you're holding a fat turd
You know the dsi xl exists right ?
I always felt the same as you do back in the day but I've recently got a ds lite again and it's way better then than I remember. I just hold it lightly with the fingers instead of trying to grip it now.
@@54356776 Why would I bother with the DSi XL when I have a New 3DS XL. If I wanted to exclusively play DS games that's where I would play, but I still have to use my phat original DS because of the GBA cartridge slot, there are many games that require the use of both the DS and GBA slots. I like the screen on the DS Lite but I do not like the feeling of the buttons or how flat it feels, I also had the same experience on my 3DS and New 3DS XL, which is why I had to buy a grip for the New 3DS XL, and for my old 3DS I use it with the Circlepad Pro, which kind of works like a more comfortable grip.
i miss my ndsl :( my mom gave it to my cousin in Argentina when i was 5
Recently I had the idea of buying an R4 cart because I'm running out of memory slots in old games. Sadly, it seems to be a bootleg and it doesn't work.
The home of the first the world ends with you game, unforgettable
My DS lite unfortunately is broken with the d pad not working along with the top half of the foldable screen holding on for dear life.
Any legit batteries to replace the original cause i keep finding bad reviews that claim the ones found this days are trash.
thank you in advance
I remember my cousin stole my Mariokart cartridge
