- Inspector Morse is a British detective drama television series based on a series of novels by Colin Dexter. It starred John Thaw as Chief Inspector Morse and Kevin Whately as Sergeant Lewis.
The theme and incidental music for the series was written by Barrington Pheloung and uses a motif based on the Morse code for "M.O.R.S.E.", starting with the opening notes and recurring all the way through.

This makes me think of my dear dad. I can go right back to being a child and seeing him sat in the chair watching this. If I only we could go back. Miss you dad.
I remember racing back from scouts every Wednesday night to watch this and it still affects me now, 30+years later x
Without wishing to upset you, he is now in a "better place:" only natural and understandable to miss your dad.
It reminds me of my grandad ❤ the memories never fade 😀❤
Being a “gen z”, I didn’t catch this but I’m watching Endeavour (with young inspector Morse) with my parents. I can only imagine I will feel the same as you one day. May your dad rest in peace.
I used to watch it with my grandfather as a small child, it was the only thing we both liked to watch!
I loved watching this with my wife and in-laws. Now they’re all gone, as is John Thaw. Thank you all.
I have 2 young ones that are autistic and non verbal. This calms them down immediately. When they hear it they smile and want hugs.
Try Samuel Barber, adagio for strings.
I think this is literally the best tv theme ever produced. It evokes so much emotion and memories for so many and the tv series was also a complete masterpiece and pure class in every good way. John Thaw died far to young at only 60...he was excellent in this....
I agree
It was in fact selected the best TV theme music ever by over 20,000 Classic FM listeners and Radio Times voters. Who I am to question that?!? Deeply moving music for such a short piece.
It was the most intelligent series I ever watched. It was so classy and full of English charm; my whole youth came back. The music is phenomenal. 💝
I agree ❤
and the "Lewis" and "Endeavour" derivatives were quite good, too -- and John Thaw's daughter had a recurring part in Endeavour which was a really cool tie-in.
@ansakyt thank you for pointing that out. I love Louis, but I never saw the other one. It's time to get into it. Greetings 🇵🇱
@@ansakytwho is he's daughter ?
@@user-xh5zg5qv6m Abigail Thaw plays the newspaper reporter that young Morse interacts with regularly. She resembles her Dad more than a little if you look closely.
I met Barrington Pheloung having a drink in a pub during a crop circle conference some years ago. Was very happy to meet the composer of this deeply moving theme music to my favourite TV series.
was that happenstance or was he into circles?
Sorry - I don't remember.
Few people realise how clever this piece is, its whole foundation is on the Morse code for "Endeavour" which as we all know now was the character's Christian name.
If that piece of music doesn’t move you to tears then nothing will. Such a compelling piece
The flute is Morse's soul
@@annamari7863 ...for me it's the higher strings and then the horns near the end.
I really love the notes at the beginning of the Morse soundtrack at the end...they are playing out Morse code!
It is absolutely spellbinding.
I only found out yesterday that the composer spelled out "Morse" in morse code at the beginning, that he often dropped hints in his music (major to minor chords maybe?) about the bad guys. Apparently he was a puzzle fan.
This piece always fills me with nostalgia almost to the brink of tears. Nostalgia for the series; for John Thaw and other excellent actors who are sadly gone; for the great Barrington Pheloung, who captured the essence of the character in these 3+ minutes and thus composed the best TV score ever written, and nostalgia for the XXth century, which, with all its defects, is where I still belong.
now I dislike being sappy so I'll most likely deny having typed this but, I have similar feelings about some things and what I can advise for whatever it is worth is, don't think of it as belonging to a different time, think of it as being a surviving peace of that time that exists in the now so that the youngsters can learn a bit about things that have come to pass....
I’m right there with you both.

Dennis Waterman RIP
It is the ultimate words said unspoken.
What you have written is so beautifully true. It so tugs at the very core of one’s soul
The best detective series of all time.
the car jag mk2
Endeavour is a worthy successor as well.
@@ShizukuSeiji NIce but not like John Thaw as Morse.
@@TheresaPowers agree. Only one Morse.
Yup, we know how to do it here in the UK. MORSE IS A FAVOURITE
The last week or so i've been watching Endevour, it brings back so many memories growing up in the 1960s surrounded by men who had been to war.
Morse was one of the finest dramas.
A musical piece that will live on for hundreds of years. A modern day masterpiece of classical music.
That's exactly the words I used to describe it to my dear friend who loves Classical. He gave this tune a nod..
The most beautiful theme song ever made. It’s one of my favorites and I don’t have too many favorite theme songs. Just beautiful.
Everytime I Hear This.
It Moves Me
Haunting.
Beautiful.
Emotional.
Tears, Everytime At The Sheer Beauty Of The Music.
Beautiful, Just Beautiful.
Now used on the prequel Endeavour, about Morse's early days as a copper. Both are excellent series.
Trinitarian its a different treatment though. Equally heart rending if not more so. Have never watched Inspector Morse but I love Endeavor. Great plots, acting, filming.
I love both too:-D
Sorry ı just wanted to say
Watching Morse will be a treat after Endeavor. You'll be able to spot the many seeds they plant that come to fruition in the original when Morse is "all grown up". The production values are dated but mysteries and acting are terrific. Enjoy!@@AlbertoVO5
When this theme is played at the end of the pilot episode of Endeavour, and as Shaun Evans looks into the rear view mirror and sees John Thaw in the reflection .... deep.
AlbertoVO5 You need to get your hands on the original starring the late John Thaw as Morse, just as great, if not better. From the very first episode, Dead of Jericho which was broadcast on Jan 7 th 1987 ( filmed 1986), and Morse saying to Lewis “ I’m a different kettle of fish, Lewis “ - viewers knew they were on a winner with this series. A lot of great con stars also: Patrick Troughton, Gemma Jones, Sir Michael Hordern, Gwen Taylor, Patricia Hodge to name but a few. Although sometimes Endeavor connects some of its plot lines with the original series, it isn’t a patch on the original format. So I do highly recommend getting the original on DVD.
I am no fan of TV drama, but Inspector Morse, with John Thaw and Kevin Whately, really was special.
And the theme music by Barrington Pheloung, brought down the curtain with a mood of hubris, justice, and majesty.
R.I.P. John Thaw.
Like many I remember watching the likes of Morse and Frost; I'd not appreciated quite what a deep and mournful character Morse was until seeing Endeavour again recently; this beautiful humanity and subtlety is something modern TV just does not have
I personally liked Frost better because it felt that was sort of still happening by the time I watched these shows with my mom.Honest;y I can't remember how many detectives (also german ones, like der Alte) I watched but those were definitely standouts.
Midsommer murders is trash.
Absolutely agree about Morse being subtle. There are no tears, screaming or crying. He displays his emotions with facial expressions and minor changes in the tone of his voice.
@@Marklovesdrama Exactly. The only downside of Endeavour is that the actor who plays him looks nothing like John Thaw did at that age (you can see him in old episodes of the 60s crime series 'Redcap'). Of course that doesn't really matter as he's playing Morse, not John Thaw, but it would have been nice if there was more of a resemblance.
Morse always struck me as a tortured soul, RIP John Thaw
How did we go from televised masterpieces such as Morse, Frost, only fools and horses, going back further too when we had the sweeney, minder, Porridge, open all hours, and so on m, to the absolutely mind numbing crap like love island, first dates, Britain’s got taken, I’m a celebrity and all the other garbage on tv now.
My how far we’ve fallen.
Agreed mate TV will never be the same and only getting crappier
I can't bare to watch 99% of modern garbage on TV nowadays. Just mind numbing trash!
Reality TV is far cheaper to make cos there's no talent to pay ... only an endless supply of morons willing to go on TV and make a spectacle of themselves for nothing.
You have expressed my sentiments entirely. It would seem that John F has the answer; reality TV is cheap and the results speak for themselves. The unfortunate thing is that there are enough intellectually challenged individuals tuning in to this muck to convince the producers that they can get away with it. You will notice that all these programmes have one thing in common - Crying!. The evidence is there: Bake a cake; someone ends up crying. Refurbish a house; someone ends up crying. Lose weight: someone ends up crying. Talent show; someone ends up crying, Go on a date; someone ends up crying, etc. etc. ....................
@@johnbrady2936 I have an idea for a reality show suitable for a world overrun by celebrity chefs. Well, it's not really my idea but here goes. When the teen Heliogabalus was Roman emperor he rewarded any of his cooks who came up with a tasty new sauce but if anyone got it wrong he was condemned to eat nothing else but the offending sauce until he came up with a better one.
The most perfect piece of music for the most perfect of shows. It just floods you with warmth and makes you feel the best of humanity, nature and existence all at once.
How I miss Oxford and Cambridge rest in peace inspector Morse god bless you John
This is by far one of the most soul stirring themes I have heard...it is etched in my heart & soul, it has some sadness too...a sadness which has it's own beauty...words cannot describe what I feel....soul stirring, Blissful & moving...
You described it so beautifully.
I agree!!! So moving and beautiful
After TV show has ended, the killer is caught. It's peaceful, job well done. Satisfaction.
I was at my nana's some years ago and she was watching an old episode and it ended. This theme played and agree, there's something very special about this piece of music.
SO TRUE!!!
My uncle was a Signaller in the Royal Corps of Signals during the Second World War. He was severely wounded in Italy in 1943. TV detectives were not his thing. But sat in front of a Morse when visiting us he suddenly said "That's Morse code.. it says... MORSE...bit of a glass arm though.."
One of the most captivating theme tunes of the twentieth century composed for television. It has become like a tribute to both the highly talented late John Thaw and Kevin Wheatley.
Yes. And it's whately :)
Aon't forget the brilliant composer, Barrington Pheloung, who is no longer with us.
It reminds me of Pink Floyd's music.
Parts of it.
I think it's the ONLY TV Show Theme Song I ever sought out just to listen too.
Just heard the awful news that Barrington Pheloung has passed away. I will think of him everytime I hear this beautiful piece. R.I.P great one and thank you for the music x
Sad indeed. One of the best tunes ever.
Sad to hear. He left us a beautiful melody for the finest cop show ever to be on television Inspector Morse.
And dont forget the late John thaw......
I had no idea he was Australian! Reading obits now.
Forever in our hearts and ears... Brilliant music and themes (Morse and Lewis) that will last for quite a long time.
The world lost a brilliant composer. His work will be remembered.
MantellanCrux I totally agree.
Endeavor, 2023... Masterpiece!
Great series! I still enjoy hearing this theme song played on Classic FM.
One of the most beautifully haunting theme songs in tv history, as well as stand alone compositions. So lovely.
This reminds me of my grandad. I'd sit on the arm of his chair everytime I went to see him as a boy. Great memories. Seems like yesterday and at the same time seems a million years ago❤️
I named my new service dog “Endeavour” as he howls in front of TV every time this theme plays! First one off “Endeavour” pilot had Endeavour listening to Opera and typing a letter of resignation. My puppy went nuts howling! Likes mezzo sopranos the best!
That's fantastic! Sounds like a great pup. 😀
Great series. RIP John Thaw. How we do miss your acting. How we do miss inspector Morse..
It gives me goosebumps every time. Brilliant theme for a brilliant TV production. R.I.P John Thaw
John Bower In Kavanagh QC and The Sweeney too.
Manchesters finest.
R.I.P Barrington Pheloung too.
It was an honour to have meet John Thaw while they was filming an Episode of Inspector Morse even got my picture taken and a signed autograpgh too got to meet kevin whatley too never forgot that day
Lucky you Sir! I would have loved to.
I just heard a van reversing and the beep sound suddenly reminded me of this tune! It reminds me of my dad and simpler times in the 90s. Good times.
This piece makes me cry every time it's so powerful
This theme is brilliant. And so are the stories
Clever trick in playing Morse's given name in the musical intro. Great series.
How does he do that? Is it Morse code? Sorry if I'm being stupid 😂
@@classicmusician700 Yes. The dots and dashes at the start spell out M-O-R-S-E and if you listen carefully the sound of that message blends into and becomes the support rhythm of the theme proper once it starts rolling.
@@adamsbja WOW!
💯🇬🇧
Interesting fact: occasionally the morse code was changed to spell out the name of the killer or a red herring.
A indebted thank you to Barrington Pheloung. For an exceptional piece of music.
The best detective novels I've read. I usually pick up a book after work and sit in a pub and order a pint and some snacks for an hour or so. I picked up Colin Dexter's Morse and I'd been there four hours and kicked out. I read all the way home on the bus. Dexter has a unique style of making the mundane exciting. Plus making Morse a drunk, lecherous antihero. John Thaw was a genious choice for the live action.
You got the sense he had gone through the wringer. Lewis was his sounding board.
This music touches my innermost being.
A beautiful theme which encapsulates Morse’s personality, genius complexity of character and the amazing city of Oxford, the series it’s unique perfect casting and it represents the absolute best of detective crime drama ever conceived
Yes. His depression, the high spires of Oxford, and of course his name in the Morse code. One could also hear the plodding police work with the occasional excitement/resolutions that it contains.
Inspector morse....Lewis.... endeavour........I'm literally praying for aother spin off. The best of the best, all of them ❤❤❤
I am sure there will be another spinoff because the existing three series, have been so popular. Not just in the UK but also in the USA.
Sweet musik of nostalgia, lost innocence and unfulfilled expectations, yet with a promise fir a better future- Like the dear memory of a lost loved person ( a dead mother being the best one!) , who wants us to be happy despite the burden of tragic loss and urging us to look ahead, with hope for the future!
Loved this theme. A real masterpiece. God rest his soul. He left a great legacy in this theme alone.
Brilliant and unforgettable theme, for one of the best series ever!
RIP the wonderfully named Barrington Pheloung who composed this.
So true *Aussie God* "Hard times make strong people, strong people make good times, good times make weak people, weak people make harsh times."
"Where fall the footsteps of the Master, the ears of those
ready for his Teaching open wide."
This program is popular also in Japan.
I love this melody, there is a melancholy.
@@dollcefina really happy so many people can watch it
69yo ,watched Morse and now Endeavour. love the musical etudes, background opera and classical aire. GOOD SHOWS
I am already missing Endeavour and just enjoying the beautiful music from the series
This is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain, The happy highways were I went and cannot come again,
It reminded me of Morse quoting Houseman's poem in the last episode... ❤
I went to Oxford because of Morse and my Dad. Daddy told me that Oxford had had him walked the place in awesomeness. Then I met Morse and that was the ultimatum, I went with my wife and daughter, even I recreate Morse’s heart attack in Exeter College, my daughter taped me that. I still remember Lewis kissing his forehead and what a sad day was that. The music also was wonderful, chapeau to Barrington Pheloung.
Everytime I hear this theme song, I cry. I've never heard anything more beautiful and mesmerizing. It takes me back in time to my many visits to UK. God I miss UK 😞
Such a brilliant series - as is Endeavour, both beautifully written with this score to die for….
It's a great loss, no doubt. And only 65 years old. I'm 65, but will leave nothing like this behind to be remembered. But, he was old enough to compose this all those years ago and he lived long enough to play in the quartet at the Master's (Colin Dexter's) memorial service. Requiescat in Pace, noble ones each.
This theme is the reason why I now have a deep love for classical music.
RIP, Barrington Pheloung ... such a great talent, he will be truly missed. Not only did he compose this glorious piece of music, he also composed the music for the film Truly Madly Deeply ... both themes are hauntingly beautiful.
You should listen to the "Broken Sword" theme he did, also an incredible piece.
Thank you for the recommendation ... I will definitely listen, I’m sure it’s beautiful.
@@LadyGwenie One of my favorite video game music =D
So very moving. I enjoy Endeavour even more than the original Morse series. Both the script and the actors are phenomenal.
I LOVE Endeavour too ❤
……beautiful music composition by an Australian……RIP Barrington………
I adore this piece of music. And i thorughly enjoyed watching Morse and Lewis. Great drama. Xx
Love this music. I’ve been watching the Endeavor series and every time they played this song makes me feel……
Best TV theme song ever, and it suits a wonderful TV series.
Such a legendary piece of music!
I just saw the first episode of Endeavour Series 7, and at the end of the credits, they dedicated the episode to Barrington Pheloung. I didn't know he had passed - what a horrible shock! I've loved the music that he made for Morse, Lewis, and Endeavour for more than 30 years now - and he was only 65! How sad for his family, his friends, and all of us, who just loved to soak in his music every time one of those shows appeared on TV!
Let him rest in peace
A modern classic piece of music, still beautiful today.....and still used for endeavour. Loved it as a kid and still love it today
I find the Inspector Morse Theme song wonderful but painfully sad because John Thaw is no longer with us. I love his character! I think, also, that Shaun Evans is the perfect young Morse - Endeavor......a great actor and so handsome!
I love the fact that John Thaw’s daughter acted in Endeavour. Felt so right
Love this piece. Eerily and haunting, yet with the optimism everything will be fine.
This always brings a lump to my throat. Such a beautiful moving piece!
Me too, even tears sometimes.
WNED is showing Inspector Morse again during the pandemic and I am mesmerized by the music to no end, heavenly, hunting and penetrating! Not to mention the character of Morse. A classy man with the love for music and opera. God bless John Thaw's soul who was able to manifest so much artistry in his work. I love the fact that he is limping a bit! Made everything so much more real! like life.
A stirring and emotional piece of music. It reflects the sadness of both the subject matter and the personality of the greatest fictional detective of all time.
This song makes me think of the past, tragedies, the good times.
Amazing series with a great actor, John Thaw. And this theme is amazingly beautiful as well.
Morse was my late dad's favourite police series.x
Thank you Barrington Pheloung, thank you...May you rest in peace .
Beautiful. Just beautiful.
The guy who wrote this also composed the music for the video game 'Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars.' Unsurprisingly, it's some of the best music ever written for a game.
This is what Sunday nights sound like. The quiet end of the day and the end to the weekend.
Such a great talent and absolutely lovely and generous bloke. His amazing and memorable work will live on. RIP Barrington Pheloung.
My dog is called Morse, out of respect for the best detective series ever.
such a great name for a dog
I’m obsessed with Shaun Evans, sad the show ended.
Alas, we miss you Inspector Morse. You left us too soon. Sleep well, wherever you are
I didn’t realize the Morse Code inclusion until I saw this video. It’s such a beautiful rather melancholy piece that befits our dear Morse. I do enjoy the Endeavour version where there’s more emphasis on the first portion. I enjoy it when you hear bits of it in different episodes. Rip to both John Thaw and Barrington Pheloung
