Hi Phil I remember to the left of the main gates just past the pub there was a road that ran down the length of the park just past the boating lake and halfway down there was a side entrance and a football pitch at the bottom all the best Paul
A very interesting look around that. I haven't been there for a long time. The last time was over twenty years ago when I 'pat-tested' the park buildings and Sandwell Park Farm a couple of times. It's a wonderful park - and good to see that it's all looking in good condition and well cared for, which can't be said for too many parks around the West Midlands! Many thanks for that.
Another great video Phil bought back a lot of great memories,I'm sure there used to be a drinks fountain either what you showed or near by it as you walked in,I seem to remember that next to the boating house there was an aviary, plus you could also hire a punt and go fishing in the boating lake if you didn't want to go around the sides
Hi Phil enjoyed the walk around Dartmouth Park when I was a kid I loved the boating lake I can see there's been some changes its always been a nice place to relax all the best Paul
Thanks for this Phil. It takes me back. They didn't call the boats in with a megaphone - there were big speakers on the boat house playing the latest hits to the couples in the boats. Nobody fishing now I noticed. It used to cost 9d to fish and the best spot was the corner you reached at 14.30. I remember the refreshment shop too 'cos I used to fancy one of the girls who worked there.
@@awalkwithphil I can't hear anything by Gerry and the Pacemakers without thinking of the music from that boathouse. Any chance you might branch out to parts of Smethwick?
I used to fish there when the sandwell junior passport to angling ran. It was in the 1980s. I won a few contests and lots of great prizes. Went there for a walk a couple of years back and there was a huge goldfish swimming with the carp, probably dumped after someone won it at the sandwell show or fair. Must have been a few years back as it's now around 30lb.
Dartmouth Park is a great park that’s kept neat and tidy. Families have loads of play areas and open spaces for all ages. It’s such a nice park to bike ride around or walk on a summer’s day.😊
Hi Phil, Weather dependent, I go up to the park mostmornings on my mobility scooter, I don't think the drinking fountain as worked for a very long time, Selwyn, Mike and the rest of the Team, all members of Freinds of Dartmouth Park do a sterling job tending the sensory garden and other outlying flowers beds in the park and down Dagger Lane most Tuesday and Friday mornins, actually the " Ice cream parlour ' is a sit in cafe that opens weekends and holidays and at the back of "The Fort " as most regulars to the park call it is a back entrance and somewhere to sit and eat, the floral clock when I remember it from was around about the right hand verge of the cenotaph and also at the end of the path where it forks but of course it is now the sensory garden. I go mainly for the birdwatching and to watch the Ring-necked Parakeets that frequently fly around the park and local gardens, myself and another colleague did a tree survey in 2015 for the park manager and I did a video on the park which is still on youtube, not very popular I might add, and now I'm verydependant on the mobility scooter, another video I put on there in April, a scooter tour of the park, very little talk, mainly music due to asthma and COPD, I still have another 5 videos of the park to upload, but no rush, I enjoy yor walks because they are local, I'm familiar with most of the places you have featured so far and you give a good commentary, the park was reburbished after the Friends of Dartmouth Park's succesfull bid for a grant from the National Lottery for £4 million pounds, and it was money well spent in my opinion, I remembe;r those tiolets that were on the car park by the entrance to the park as I was mugged in thereand had a pair of binoculars taken from me, my parents used to take meto the concert area on sunny sunday afternoons and |listen to the Brass Bands etc, although I guess I would have not been very old, the seats I think were green and could be folded and stacked under cover in the stage area, I do remember the paddling pool, I used to have a paddle or two until one day a number of kids including myself ended up with cut feet due to some mindless morons smashing clear glass pop bottles in there and spreading them around the pool, at 10.35 you werestanding in my favourite birding area, I drive my scooter to about 18" from the rails, turn my seat 90 deg and place my feet on the bottom rail, I went up to the classic car show the day before you on the sunday and counted 8 Greylag Geese amongst the Canada Geese, last winter they had a Grey Phalarope on the pool and attracted 100's of Twitchers from around the Midlands and beyond, at that time I didn't have my scooter and sadly was unable to get there but I had seen them before.,, The reason the boats ceased on the pool was because the boat shed containg the boats in winter storage and the adjoing aviary for lots of budgiesl was burned to the ground, and all the budgies perished along with the boats, and few years ago the council introduced Pedalos in the shape of Swans but they suddendly didn't turn up for the summer no more, the park is built on a sanstone plateau along with the town centre, and no matter where you approach West Bromwich from you have to come up a hill. You say there are often events going on in the park, the problem is Sandwell Council don't advertise them enough, the park lodge by the main gates was sold by the council and is now in private ownership and all the Virginia Creeper ( People used to think it was Ivy ) was removed by the new owner, a good walk and a good talk Phil, next time you are in the park and our paths may cross then you can buy me a 99, cheers for now , Mike AKA Poggy

I have often wondered about the West Bromwich association with Dartmouth - which is, after all, a place in South Devon. After researching it a bit I have found that there is of course a definite link to the Earls of Dartmouth. In the early 18th century the Sandwell estate was bought by the 1st Earl of Dartmouth, William Legge, who rebuilt the original Sandwell Hall. The Legge family were significant and included members who were bishops, military leaders and prominent politicians. They had a number of family ‘seats’, which included Patshull Hall near Pattingham as well as Sandwell Hall. They also had close connections to the Harley family, who are still significant landowners in Herefordshire - not a million miles from where I now live. Sandwell Hall was originally called Priory House - the name was changed in the 17th century. In the mid-19th century the family decided that West Bromwich had become a bit too industrialised for their taste and they permanently re-located to Patshull Hall. From then on the house had a number of uses: a home for orphans, a boarding school and even a branch of Winson Green Asylum. The building was demolished in 1928 after damage from mining subsidence. Part of the lodge still exists within the roundabout of Junction 1 of the M5. The Dartmouth family and titles still exist, with the present Lord Dartmouth even serving as a member of the European Parliament until 2019.
Excellent comment and as mentioned on another thread I will take a look around the old priory and any remains of the colliery. Most informative and many thanks

Maybe the Oldbury road near Nine Leasows (my nan used to live there) or Smethwick Junction station and the canal.
