  • Lord You Gave Me A Mountain by Marty Robbins
    Lyrics:
Born in the heat of the desert
My mother died giving me life
Despised and disliked by my father
Blamed for the loss of his wife
You know Lord I've been to a prison
For something that I'd never done
It's been one hill after another
And I've climbed them Lord, one by one
But this time you gave me a mountain
A mountain I may never climb
It isn't a hill any longer
You gave me a mountain this time
My woman got tired of the hardships
Tired of the grief and the strife
    Tired of working for nothing
    Tired of being my wife
She took my one ray of sunshine
She took my pride and my joy
She took my reason for living
She took my small baby boy
And this time you gave me a mountain
A mountain I may never climb
It isn't a hill any longer
You gave me a mountain this time

@@joeharris5990 True enough. Different artists - different takes. I've loved Marty Robbins since the first time I heard him sing and Elvis too, actually. That was seven decades or so back. This song will forever be etched in our hearts, once you reach age 61 and a being a Mother of one son, and he moves away, not knowing when he'll say, "hi" again, it hurts. Marty Robbins wrote this song and Mr. Elvis Presley sang in his "Aloha, from Hawaii" just another example of how beautiful this song is. Hello to the future. Enjoy.

But hearing Marty, I can feel dreary, exhausting, and sad weight that a man had underwent through his life, attempting to hold onto the very light and meaning of living, but problems always came back to get him. Marty lived his life knowing it would be shortened because of heart issues, and he lived it well. His songs tend to be powerful and inspirational, and are all beautiful musically. His performances were very dynamic. In his spare time he was a competitive auto racer. Everyone who knew him admired his drive and positive attitude. His poetic tribute to Marizona, his wife, (My Woman, My Woman, My Wife) is a favorite of mine. What a strong statement it makes. Jesse Jones, I'm praying for you.

Thank you so much for posting. Before I retired from the business years ago. I performed this song in my show. It was my Mother' s favorite. While on the road, my wife showed up at the venue I was performing at. Knew something was wrong. My Mother had un-expectually passed away. I had talked to her the day before. Thank God the last words we ever spoke to each other was I Love You. When I returned from the funeral and back to performing. I intro' d one song. My band went into Moutain. Blessings

One of the best country singers of all time back when country was real. he put his heart and soul in each song. I saw him live in Kingston Ont. and again in Nashville at the Opry one night after he won a race at the track. I will never forget.

Learn something every day. I had this record by Frankie Lane. As a DJ I eventually played the "new" version by Marty Robbins. Today I learned that Marty actually wrote it. I guess he had been keeping it in abeyance and finally recorded it. Cool!
