ABOUT ME:
My name is Tamer Shaheen and I am a final year engineering student at the University of Waterloo. I like to make videos about university/college, engineering and personal development. Thank you so much for watching!!
This is hands down the best and the most straight forward explanation I’ve seen.
I’m glad u liked it :)
@@TamerShaheen sir can computer engineer make he his better skills in software?
Bro I need some serious suggestion
I will soon complete grade 12 and will look into bachelor's degree .
About CS I heard that the topics it includes are so much wide and too much and after that it is good for doing specialization in other subjects like data science software engineering etc . But I don't want too much wide range of topics and I don't know whether I will go for specialization after CS at bs level .
Should I go for software engineering or Computer science .
Your suggestion would be much appreciated 👍
agree
Computer science and software Engineering are so similar. So similar that many colleges don't offer software engineering as a separate major. In fact you can be a software engineer with a computer science degree.
Yea that’s true
can you be a software engineer with a computer engineering degree?
@@brandonadler7483 yep
@@brandonadler7483 yes and no, you’ll have the competence to be one but you can’t actually call yourself one if your not a P.Eng (professional engineer). To become once you need an engineering degree and 48 months of work experience and pass an exam on ethics
@@marc-antoinenadeau8401 the PE is not meant for software engineers, hell it’s rare for computer engineers to take it and they often deal with hardware, it would be a waste of time. Do you know any software engineers that benefit from it? I know PE is very important for civil, it’s also important for mechanical, then electrical. But def not for software
Ayyyyyy, I'm a first year computer engineer at Waterloo!
That’s awesome!! How r u finding it so far?

This cleared up so much confusion. Thanks for the straightforward explanation.
Glad u liked it :)
what a good explanation! Thanks for helping me to pick^^
highly informative video tamer, keep it up!
Just to add some facts, CE is the horrifying combination of EE and CS and yes it is harder, more complex yet pays a lot. :)
What jobs you recommend that pay a lot cause I am a 4th year major for CE rn
SE jobs generally pay better than CE jobs, at least in the US
@@michaelk639 that’s what it seems, at my stage job availability is more important than pay which SE also has more of. I think I will go into embedded systems software/firmware since that’s a nice medium

This is tough man thank you 🙏🏾
thanks man you are good at explaining, hope you continue explaining in that way " from south Africa"
thanks a bunch man it was so useful to me
the most straight forward explanation ever
Awesome video with a super straightforward while still detailed explanation. Though if I got to nit-pick, I'd say in recent years Computer Science (especially at UW) has become just as competitive to get into as Software Engineering.
It’s definitely changed over the years, but I only mentioned that since software engineering at Waterloo is just notoriously known for rejecting people with like 97% averages lol
This year, quite a few people with high 97-99’s got rejected by UW CS, so it’s just as competitive as SWE.
this vid helps me a lot, thanks.
You explained very very well

Computer science is the science about computation in general, processing information using a computational machine.
Software engineering is an engineering discipline that is about creation of large and complex software systems.
Computer engineering is an engineering discipline that is about creation of integrated circuits, computer systems and system software (operating systems, firmware) that specifically runs on that designed system.
Are we taught software development, web development??? In computer engg ???
Thanks bro u truly helped me

Ayy yo so clear cut explanation
Hey Tamer this is completely unrelated to the vid but just a question from a grade 12 student. I know many people in grade 12 including myself who r stuck b/w pursuing a degree in business (I am interested in finance myself) or engineering (mechanical engg for me). I am just wondering if you faced a dilemma like this urself and how you made your decision in choosing your major. I am also considering a double major but that might just be a waste of a year of my life imo. If this all doesn't apply to you just completely ignore the comment lol. Thanks
I did face a similar situation in grade 12...but personally, I chose mech eng cuz I preferred building things.
Can you make a video showing the differences between UofT and Waterloo for engineering and computer science?
Sure, I’ll make a video about it in the coming weeks :)
you apply to waterloo , you get rejected hen you go to UofT
Man is a god
I love how short your introduction
Thank you so much
The courses you highlighted for software engineering are actually all taken by CS students as well! (at Waterloo at least)
Are you majoring in that?
@@tylerwitchard2950 yup
Can I ask you more questions about it if you don’t mind?
@@tylerwitchard2950 sure
@@add1son so I’ve been seeing a lot of comments stating that there are certain electives you will have to already know or have to learn on your own for better knowledge like math and etc, I know they teach you but do you think it’s better to also learn the basics of engineering on your own? Also I’m having a hard time in choosing between computer software engineering and software engineering? Do you have an other advice or cons and pros that you can weigh out that weren’t provided in the video. For a better understanding I want to state that I want to either do computer engineering or software engineering because I want to design/build my own video games and apps one day and also enjoy coding and watching videos. There all also other positive alternatives within those fields and I would like to mention I’ll be minoring in art/architecture and digital art and design and know the field of engineering will be of great benefit of that 😭. Sorry for the long paragraph but research and watching videos can only do so much and I don’t know anyone personally who’s majoring in engineering so it would really be of help if you can give me a better understanding of the field since you majored in it
I am in CE almost graduating and I love my major I am not the best student, I have done a coop as a QA and covered lots of stuff from electronics, firmware, physics and coding. But I don’t feel like I truly know/understand as much as other specialized fields like EE or CS/SE. I know basically a little bit of everything but not a lot of one thing. I am a bit nervous going into my last year not knowing where to focus on and what job to get. I like Embedded, OS (Linux especially), Cybersecurity, a little bit of web dev, semiconductors and I do have experience in testing from my coop. But I don’t feel like I can compete against people who have specialized in a particular field. Is this normal?

What about what some colleges offer CSE (computer science and engineering)??
Рахмет! Thanks!
I got offer from u of t for electrical but i want to study comp eng and from some people over there i heard that for first two yrs its ece and from 3 rd yr you can choose btw ee and ce regardless of what your offer letter said or your gpa is it true just depending on your interest?
Hi bro, I got into Computer Engineering at UWaterloo and am waiting for a decision for CS. I also got into CS at UBC. Do you think CompEng at UWaterloo will be worth over CS at UBC? PS - I live in BC
I’m obv a little biased towards engineering, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I think that computer engineering at uwaterloo is ur best option for two reasons. First, the co-op at UWaterloo is better than any other university in Canada and u have a greater chance of getting incredible jobs and internships that pay very well. Second, computer engineering can allow u to work the same jobs as a computer science major...so in terms of job prospects, the difference isn’t that big. But, u will just miss out on an engineering ring if u take computer science (keep that in mind if the ring is important to u). But again, take what I say with a grain of salt and do what u feel is best for u and ur more comfortable with. Anyways...Congratulations on ur Waterloo engineering acceptance!! 🎉 Lmk what u end up doing :)
Can I become a software engineer with a computer engineering degree?
I heard software engineering gives a higher chance of doing co op in silicon... Is that true?
That’s not true...most engineering programs give u a good chance of going to Silicon Valley
I wanna be both Software engineering and computer hardware engineering do which degree/s is best for both??
im feel lucky as a BSc (Hons)Computer Engineer Student😀
I'm good in maths but weak in programming what should I choose Cs or se

Hey man, I am in software engineering at western but I applied for a transfer to ryerson for computer engineering as a backup incase I didn’t get into software eng (western first year was general so I had to pick for second and I ended up getting a seat). As of right now I do enjoy coding a lot but I also don’t want to limit myself to just software yet if I do transfer I would be pushed a year back in my learning. Any advice on how to make a decision? This video definitely helped but still it’s a hard choice to make.
Hmm that’s a def hard choice. Software engineering is pretty hard to get into, so if ur in, then that’s really good. However, if u feel like you like more hardware tasks, instead of switching to computer, you could do more hardware side projects or join a student design team and do some hardware work. That way, you get some hardware experience and don’t lose ur software engineering spot and waste a year. Also, software engineers make bank, so I think once u graduate, u will be very inclined to just do software jobs. Also, I don’t know ur entire situation, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Hi I have an interest in either majoring in computer engineering or software engineering, is it alright if I ask you a few questions?
Hey, in my country they offer CpE as a stream in EE, although I do the same course offered in CpE in the US, i will get Bsc. EE degree and I want to do job in us or bearby countries so thst won't be a problem, right?
What are the chances of getting admission if you are on waiting list of waterlooo??? What is the last date to get an admission offer

I studied IT which is basically alittle bit of everything comouters except engineering. You dont need see the high level math. Now thagt im going for dual major in software and computer engineering i want to work on embbeded software engineering or robotics engineering. I want work with Both hardware and software.
Can I do Computer science jobs by doing Computer engineering?
thanks bro
I’m 17 and thinking of which one of these I should take my math isn’t really that good but I am really interested in game development and web design I averaged a 82 in advanced functions ( Canadian course ) in grade 11 which one do you guys think I should go for
All of them need math, so try to get better grades in calculus. The way to do that is just by practice. You can’t go wrong with any of these choices, but if ur grades are a little on the lower side, the computer science and computer engineering may be better options.
Is not a big deal. Computer Science Math is not too heavy like others Engineering. Almost every degree in Collegue have Calculus 1 so is not a big deal. Discrete Math and Linear Algebra are not that complex either.
if ur into that stuff u could go for a graphic design or game design degree since they can lead to careers in web design and game development.
Tamer, I was planning to get a dual bachelor degree in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, I was also planning to use my electives in computer engineering but I found out that my school only offers computer science and computer system engineering, which one is closer to computer engineering?
Woah that’s a lot of work. Why don’t you just major in computer engineering?
@@TamerShaheen To be honest, I love mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. Computer engineering/science/systems engineering are just additions for my overall knowledge in tech , so I was like since my school doesn't offer computer engineering courses, which minor/electives/ courses should I choose; computer science or systems engineering?
Dual degree is not worth it. Just by studying mechanical engineering you will get a lot of electrical engineering courses and the jobs opportunities are enough. Besides you will end up specializing and only one area. On the other hand if you study Electrical Engineering you will get a lot of courses from Computer Science. Instead of wasting time learning stuff that you are not gonna need first find what Job you would like to have and then prepare for it. Pick the degree that offers you the best courses and if you need a elective for other degree you take it.
Hey can you recommend good schools that offer computer engineering in the uk?
Pls does computer engineering cover the IT aspect?
Software engineer is basically a sub career of a computer engineer, Computer Engineers can either go with Hardware or software..
not really se or cs know more about coding and software then ce
@@mikaealconfucius3056 bro i am computer engineer i have 3 major field Hardware, software and Network, You can't call cs as software engineer because thats basically two different thing, second CS is not an engineering degree..
What is the difference between software engineering and hardware engineering?
Software eng is more coding and hardware is more circuits or mechanical design
Thanks
can you study computer engineering and become a software engineering ?
Bro, so to people who's more into IT(cyber security) stuff should go for Computer Science right? Or I've also seen there's Cyber Security degree, should one go for it?
I think if u already know u want to get into cyber security, then just go for that. But, if ur still deciding then Comp Sci may be a better option. Just my opinion tho
which should i choose between Computer science and Software engineering
I can’t obv tell u which one to pick cuz it depends on the person and the university. So, if u value program flexibility, go for comp sci. But, if u value the engineering ring, then SE may be better
@@TamerShaheen I wanted to go for SE first, till I knew comp sci had AI in the course, but can i still get a career for designing software if i still go for software engineering
I chose computer engineering as my major, but I know very little about programming. What are your thoughts on what I should do?
They’ll teach you but learn on your own as well
Yeah you definitely need to learn coding on your own, I've heard of CS majors who graduate without knowing how to code. So if you are in CE definitely learn on your own time since all CS majors learn on their own too. It's unrealistic to become competent with programming if your only source of programming is from university courses.
Will a Mechatronics Engineering student be fine if he has interest in Robotics but more interest on the software side? Or should he pick Computer Engineering?
A mechatronics engineering student will be just fine...a lot of students from mechatronics actually end up working in software
@@TamerShaheen Don't they tend to have a feeling that they'll not benefit from the mechanical courses in their software career? And it would be just better if those courses were more software focused rather than mechanical or electrical focused?
GUYS WHICH BETTER CS OR SE OR CE?
All about computer engineer major and computer science minor
Yea that’s definitely an interesting way to go
ummm i just know how to turn my comp on & off and sometimes i can navigate youtube :/
