Thank you. That was a very enjoyable and informative video.😊 (subscribed) The producers of this video did a great service to those of us who love the lake and to those who want to learn more about Cayuga Lake.👍
I grew up in Ithaca in the 1960s through the 1970s, graduating high school there in 1982! I remember when Stewart Park has a toy train ride for kids and there was a concession stand with snacks and a few other playground rides as well as even a merry go round. Back through the 1960s and early 1970s there was a small zoo in the park also! The zoo had monkeys, a pair of peacocks and other animals, nearest the shore though there was a large duck pond that was beside the Fall Creek Inlet next to the ground keepers building. Also the wooded area to the left of the main entrance is the bird sanctuary that was for a long time used as part of the movie studio as well. Other facts about Ithaca is now mostly forgotten but a number of movies WERE FILMED IN ITHACA on location even after the original movie studio vanished!! In fact one of these movies was The Three Stooges Meet Hercules which was filmed on location in Ithaca at the Clinton Drug Store (now CVS). And the Bird Sanctuary doubled as a "jungle" for the early Tarzan serial movies as well in the 1940s!! Further unlisted film credits also include that a few of the Our Gang/ Little Rascals episodes were even shot on location in Ithaca NY! And while that isn't the "only claim to fame" for Ithaca NY, as there are other historical facts about the town as well that is seldom known today in 2020!! For example the OLDEST KNOWN advertisement for an "ice cream sundae" is actually from Ithaca NY, and the company known as Emerson Power Transmissions was originally the home of Borg Warner which back then was the corporate headquarters for the company. While this you might find less interesting, what you fail to understand is that Borg Warner worked with Otis Elevator making chain and other products for elevators, as well as many of the chain products used by a large number of other manufacturers like General Motors, Ford and Chrysler and the list of parts Borg Warner produced only goes on from there. Cayuga Lake was also one of the testing grounds for the iron clad battleship that USS Merrimack which (iron clad of the North) used to defeat the south in the Civil War....ending slavery!
Cottonwood, oaks, pines, hickory, sugar maple, hemlock, cherry, fruitwoods---love the trees and lumber.I lived in King Ferry (1964-1974)directly across from the King Ferry Hotel at Rte 90 and 34B.Lee Coon bought that Hotel, then Henry Parmeter, then Miller Family.
I love it up here! It is too bad that the taxes in New York state are so high! Between the taxes and the money it requires to heat buildings in the winter it is difficult to persuade industries with decent-paying jobs to move into state. Not to mention the cold and snow ..12+ feet/year, Syracuse, somewhat less in Ithaca (the lake also somewhat moderates the temperature around it )
New York State is absolutely stunning. We have been there several times but this time we are staying for a week to see and go to wineries ,waterfalls, organic farms, boat tours and whatever else we can explore.
We just came back from a trip to the Ithaca area. Thank you for this informative video. I learned so much about the geology and history of the lake. Wish I had watched your video before the trip.
Cool how you point out a lot of the geographic interest points off the lake... the nature is cool in tjis area... too bad the town and all its trash are ruining everything... im glad i dont have to live or work there any more.. farm market is always over crowded when ive visited...

I grew up there in the same time frame and I too remember the old Stewart Park! I'm 4 years younger though.

That's amazing! I feel like I'm in a different world up there.
