Heat & cold at the same time, I've traced it to a 'bad' thermostat in the past. Pull the thermostat off problem not there, checked wires ok, thermostat in oil mode connects cool & heat together!!! Switch it to electric -- A ok. I've seen it more than once!

You’re absolutely correct. Specially with 20-year-old units. You have to check that evaporator coil. I believe Steve is a much better plumber than he has AC technician but I understand in his part of the world they only use air conditioning a couple months out of the year so a big part of his business is just gas and go and will deal with it next year is the customers attitude

I am just a ham and egger but a renter was complaining about the AC not cooling. The AC compressor was running, the AC was blowing, so, I didn't know what was going on. The AC guy, who may have had a drug problem, said it was fine. The property manager wanted to buy some sort of portable AC unit. I told him he was crazy because he had an operational system and told him to have someone who knows what he is doing look at it. Sure enough, the guy said the heat and AC were running at the same time but I don't know how he fixed it. It was a hot air system, I don't know. The AC and gas were all firing at the same time. It did have one of those fancy wifi thermostats

Spending the price of a new unit on repairing a 20 year old unit isn’t worth it. Anything can be fixed, sometimes it just makes no sense. Put that money into new equipment. Usually I’d get it by until it needs major leak repairs, coils or a compressor. Hard start kits aren’t expensive

    • @nathang.1744

Most of the units here look to be 10 seer units. The standard “modern” ac is usually 14 seer but, you can get units where the seer rating is in the 20s. 10 seer units cost just under a dollar per hour while the 14 seer units cost about 0.65 $ to run a hour
