      What about the ship class with the disk shaped superstructure and large side pods seen in the far left and uppermost right of this screenshot of Blood and Chrome? It looks like it is in between the Galactica and the Demeter is size, it makes me think of a cruiser scale counterpart to the Galactica's battleship scale hull.

    • @glitterboy2098

      it does. and it has basically the same hull as the hornet, suggesting the Hornet and the Alert were probably both the same class of ship originally, and they were both refitted to different degrees.
      my impression is that the Hornet would be a patrol craft of some sort.. it has guns for actually fighting cylons, and can operate a bunch of raptors.
      while i suspect the Alert would be the BSG equivalent of a inflight refueling tanker.. a ship with a landing pod where raptors ansd vipers can come in, land, get fueled up and rearmed quickly, then fly off.

    • @artbrann
      @artbrann 4 года назад +2

      another thing is it might be a mini supply factory, with the ability to guard itself, again converted but still
      we know from Blood and Chrome and the Deadlock expansion that the Ghost Fleet was supposed to be secret, you can't have a cargo train jumping supplies to your secret fleet(some traitorous person might notice)
      the Galactica could make munitions from asteroids(there is the ep where someone is sabotaging the ammo production), but are you going to dedicate a secret battlestar to munching rocks? when you can convert a cargo hauler and scale it enough to supply more than just 1 ship

  • @stephenjdutton

    The "Bridge" on the first ship could be a flight control deck rther than the main bridge.

  • @Vespuchian
    @Vespuchian 5 лет назад +11

    Alternative explanation for the Hornet’s windows: it might not be the bridge, could be the flight operations centre, which would want eyeballs on launch/landing from the flight deck.

  • @WitheredHeath
    @WitheredHeath 5 лет назад +16

    I actually like the design of the Alert. I’d like to think that the flight deck could be one of many modules that could be easily detached in orbit or on the surface.
    With a small group of these, you could quickly dispatch and deploy a small forward base including a command and surveillance hub, logistics, housing, fighter support, what have you.
    I am not well versed enough in BSG lore, but that sort of technology would be incredibly advantageous in a world where resources are limited.

    Damn the Hornet and the Demeter are GORGEOUS.
    Also the Hornet, for some reason, looks like a heavily converted civilian model to me. Like some kind of luxury liner with a hanger for personal craft or shuttles, that was gutted and stuffed full of guns. This might be supported by the shared design motifs with the rather more overtly converted-looking Alert, but also that windowed command deck (and the general ship shape, particularly the engine layout) reminds me of Colonial One somewhat; plus those fanned wings look very non-military.

    The first two designs really do catch my eye. They don’t look like warships at all, but rather converted civilian ships. It makes perfect sense, really. Perhaps the flight pods are built to be modular so the Colonies build a dozen or so spares, intending to swap out a battlestar’s flight pods when they suffer serious damage so that the battlestars spend less time in the yards. Wartime experience proves this wrong, though, as the battlestars’ flight pods prove remarkably resilient, and so the Colonial Fleet has a bunch of flight pods stored in orbit of Picon. Some bright spark realises that they can use the flight pods to transform civilian passenger liners into light carriers, capable of deploying Viper and Raptor squadrons to situations that don’t warrant a full battlestar.
    It fits real world experience too. HMS Vanguard used twenty year old 380mm guns rather than have brand new larger guns be built. Britain’s industry was heavily taxed during WW2 so it ultimately proved more economical to simply fit Vanguard with the older guns, especially since the weapons had performed so well when used by HMS Hood and the Queen Elizabeth-class battleships like HMS Warspite.

    • @MediumRareOpinions
      @MediumRareOpinions 5 лет назад +20

      Honestly in some ways that can make them look more authentic military designs. It seems logical to me that at a time of total warfare streamlining production is sensible.
      I am always reminded of the Royal Engineers combat engineering vehicles and how they use the hull and running gear of the current or previous generation Main battle tank as the base of their engineer combat support vehicles.
      This reduces the burden on the logistics of sourcing spare parts as well as training personal to operate and service the vehicles.
      In short I can totally see the Colonial Fleet commissioning variations sharing the same component parts as its easier for shipyards to build fewer types of components in higher volume.

    • @autumngottlieb3071
      @autumngottlieb3071 5 лет назад +6

      @@MediumRareOpinions The thought of "streamlining production" got me thinking of Mass Effect, where for a given species, the ships are usually of the same basic shape, but at different scales. I wonder if, in universe, this is done so that less time and resources are spent designing ships, leaving more time and resources to the actual production of ships.

      1 it provides a bottleneck to prevent attackers getting into the rest of the ship
      2 modular design is easier to build and repair and can be sealed off when damaged.
      3 it lets the ship be lighter... The enemy have a choice where to attack. The pods are lightly armoured but they don't affect the survivability of the ship only the fighting capacity, the body is critical but heavily armoured so would take longer to destroy and it can still launch fighters and remain operational effective. Without flight pods, everything would be as one and the whole ship would be covered in armour which would make it slower less maneuverable etc.
      4 it keeps the fighter wings independent so are not affected by the opposite side.
      5 easier to land craft.
      That's all I can think of so far. What do you think of my reasoning?

  • @casbot71
    @casbot71 5 лет назад

    If you look at the Alert from behind you see the lower main hull starts to flare down at around the same point the flight pods main body starts. It would have been relatively simple to exaggerate the main hulls downward bulge and have the flight pod integrated into the hull and still have a through deck, the only issue being that fighters are closer to the hull at launch and retrieval. Another option would have been to just extend the hull armour to cover the extension of the mounts for the pod encompassing the actual pod, removing that weak point and giving extra space for fighter storage and supplies.
    And for the Hornet, that flight deck has a ridiculous structure in those braces at either side, where a armoured shroud extending all the way to the nose would be better protected (unless ships are left there to fly out sideways?).
    So in light of those design shortcomings that wouldn't exist if a ship was built from the ground up, and that they both have the same lower hull configuration, it's reasonable to guess that they are conversions of possibly civilian ships.

    I’m making this comment as I watch
    2:14 I have a theory as well regarding the visible flight deck on the Hornet (And I believe your correct it would certainly fit in the Cruiser Class, I lean towards Light Cruiser myself). Supposing the indentations on the port and starboard are not launch tubes but perhaps ordinance launch bays or perhaps a form of broadside artillery. What if the forward flight deck is in fact for the recovery and temporary housing of Viper’s and Raptor’s whose home vessels were destroyed in battle? If you think about it, this can make some strategic sense if not tactical; burdening say a Carrier vessel with additional squadrons it is unprepared to take on can place a strain on crew efficiency and morale, nevermind the integration problems it creates for the CAG of the receiving vessel
    2:37 Supposing the Alert is meant as a forward reconnaissance vessel serving in the Tertiary Battle Line as a Picket Ship and the flight deck is meant solely for Raptor deployment as Raptor’s would be able to land on a shorter flight deck more easily

    The Alert strikes me as something that was supposed to be a civilian vessel, like some kind of star liner, and then right before it was finished they got an order to retrofit it to be a war ship, but they were rushed and just strapped some guns and the hanger pot underneath and pushed it out the door. It would be nice if deadlock had a feature to have some emergency civilian refit ships that are super cheap but mostly suck because they aren't purpose built for combat and it would be a sort of random grab bag of what you could get I terms of what shape the hull is, the weapons load out, and weather it has fighter squadrons and ordinance launchers. No way it could be implied in a timely manner, but it would give that rag tag feeling to your fleet.

    the first two seemed to be a variation on a ship class. have a basic frame and add modules for whatever is needed

    The first two ships are the same ship. They took the first ship, removed the wings, put some plating over the hanger bay, and launch areas, and then put the pod on the bottom.

    The Demeter looks like what you get if you slap the Berzerk's flight deck into the middle of an Orion.

    The Alert to me seems like either a rescue and recovery ship or a prototype hybrid ship that was once either a cruiser or destroyer. I feel that the flight pod should have been flipped upside down in this case but that's just my preference for streamlining and that's of less importance in space.

    The Alert strikes me as a very vulnerable ship. The flight pod is easily damaged or blowen off. I can see this easily been the most hated assignment to be on.

    It bugs me a bit that the alert's flight deck isn't flipped topside-down. We know that that is a convention in the bag universe. It just seems like it would be more efficient and could've been more aesthetically pleasing

      I'd say a sense of consistency. It's nice to see that ships look like they come from the same era. But that's my opinion.

      Frigates!
      Frigates are the best and most interesting ships for main characters.

    I think, that the Hornet and the Alert are basically the same Ship type. The only major Differences are the retreaval Deck of the Hornet and the flight Pod of the Alert.
    The Windows could indeed be an Indicator to a civil Design.
    I think, that thos both Ships could be refittet Freighters, maybee a Modular design, in wich the Hornet resebles a minig Configuration, with a Deck for mining Ships oder perhaps for small Freighters for Ship to Ship transfere or something like that, while the Alert resembles a kind of long Haul Freighter, wich was refitted with a flight Pod. I could even immagin, that the flight Pod is in Fact an original Configuration, it makes kinda sense, to equip a Freighter with an external mountet flight Pod, so the Freigter can carry some Fighter Squadroons as Escorts, without sacrificing Cargo Space on long Hauls throug hostile Territories.
    Also it would be somehow nice, if the Air Intakeish thing on the Back would really be a Ship Screw and that the Design is actual Seeworthy or could even operate as a Submarine, wich also would mean, that these Ships are verry sturdy. The Function of the Rudder could be done by the cooling Wings or somekind of a Vector Thrust. On the Back there are Four smaller holes, that looking the same as the Big in the Center without the Fan, maybeethis could be somekind of ducted Fans, wich also could be used to steer in and under Water.
    This Designs have so much Potential, it's a Shame, that those didn't even make it complete into Canon.

    For me the third one looks more like an armoured carrier and would be a nice successor for the atlas in Deathlock. A more agile, lighter carrier that need less resources than the Atlas while having a great fighter wing for its size. Similar to the atlas fighter wings.
    As the war advances, the colonial would need a resuply of carriers because they would be losing the aging and out of production atlas (remember that the atlas is a huge design from the old imperial wars) and the battlestars would prove to be too expensive and slow to build. The answer would be that third design.
    The second... Its strange. That windows size makes me think that the ship is smaller than it looks and with all that artillery at the midsection... Maybe a heavy flack support ship? Focused on maintain a heavy flack screen trying to shield the fleet from the endless cylon fighter wawes and missile barrages while being able to do heavy artillery fire if you give it a break from the missile and raider attacks.
    About the second one I still don't know what to think.

    The second ship looks more like a civilian vessel witch had a flight pod added when it was commandeered.

    Not sure how different and unique the Alert is when it appears to shares the same frame as the Hornet...an the launch bay looks to be taken from the existing Battlestars from the show.
