THE OG SCAM SPONSOR! The Story of the Moneytron Onyx F1 Team (1989-1990)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 июн 2024
- You need money to go racing. And we've seen even in the modern day teams taking money no questions asked. Well- The question being 'will this cheque clear?'
And we've seen teams get promised the earth and die, we've seen teams take money that's not quite legal and die. But where it really began for these teams being funded by dodgy cash really got going in the late 80s with the Moneytron thing that sponsored Onyx.
So what was it, who was it, and where did it all come undone? Let's have a look.
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

I want these days of fly by night teams to return. The sight of random cars led/owned by goodness knows who, featuring drivers who are going to be lapped as soon as the lights go out on the starting grid was funny. And the reasons why team X or Y folded are usually interesting. It's all too humourless, professional, money driven and restrictive now the big car manufacturers run the show.
If only to allow younger drivers to get in.
The irony is that with F1’s North American resurgence there should be more of these teams popping up to capitalize if for no reason than to see what combinations of drivers, sponsors, and engines can be thrown around. Unfortunately it seems as the influx of these operations from the 80’s and 90’s ended up shutting the door. Well except for the antics going on at the back of the pack
You should talk to Peter Windsor...he's an expert at setting up fake teams
Unfortunately it's not good for the stability of formula 1
Lol f1 used to let anyone join the grid 2022 Andretti nope lol
I'd like to see Moneytron fight Megatron.
For more van Rossem shenanigans I recommend the Motorsport Magazine podcast with Mike Earle. Hilarious episode and Earle knows how to tell a good story as well!

The whole Ponzi scheme worked by him talking to investors in his office, which he left through a door behind him, to a room that was supposed to have the Moneytron. He would see what the computer would say, come back with that information and tell the investor.
When he was arrested it turned it to be an empty room where Van Rossem would hang out for a little bit before returning to his clients. Nobody was allowed into the room, yet everyone bought into it, all because of quick profits. The '90's were crazy..
"Not even people in Lincolnshire have enough fingers to count" so subtle but brilliance! 😂 Great work on this epsiode as always.
It’s a high nine over there.
But people in Norfolk managed really well!
He's right you know. Speaking from Lincolnshire.

@@AidanMillward imagine if Andretti F1 could be the new Onyx.
With a name like Moneytron you are asking for to be scammed
Yeah it's almost like buying Bitcoin and being surprised you lost all your money
Got to be a Nigerian prince behind it somewhere?
@@mikehipperson Ask the Arrows team in 1999. They literally had that happen to them lol
Having 2 of the draws of one of the huge tool boxes on wheels full of passports instead of actual tools probably raised some questions.......
Seeing as how we're talking about scams, I feel it's only right we get an up to date retelling of Rich Energy and their absurdity including what they did in the British superbike championship.
I will say that the Onyx was a nice looking car (livery aside). It was simple and clean lined … like many of the cars of its era. I would say the same of the Leyton House … it was a tidy car, nice looking air box.
It was probably the most 80s livery ever. An actual vapourwave livery (unlike the current Alpine livery).
I'd love to see more stories about similar minnow teams going back through the 80s and into the 70s, because there is an absolute goldmine of outfits there, many of which didn't even build their own cars.
He did a few of them in the original storytime, the only problem was a lot of those teams were simply "had no money, went no where", very few were actually all that interesting.
Hesketh would be a good video
He already covered the Hesketh team. Though I think that video got taken down after the whole copyright kerfuffle.
not building your own car wasn't that much of an issue back then, Jackie Stewart's Tyrrells were designed & made by Matra
@@chrisdavidson911 Only the first two as Tyrrell was running the Matra works entry.
It wasn't until the last few races of 1970 that Tyrrell finally had it's own car
Only thing missing from the Onyx story: Roberto Moreno
On a side note does anyone remember Onyx F1 models and Minichamps
Ha I just bought one !!!!!
Gachot, the driver of multiple nationalities owing as he was born in Luxembourg to a French diplomat and a German mother. Held a French passport but drove under the Belgian flag initially because it was probably the closest/cheapest option.
Even if Onyx was destined to be a backmaker on the grid, they had a very cool name for a F1 team. Sad that this team faded before Pokémon was a thing.
Mr. Krabs: Money Money Money!
I remember you made a video about this way back, but it got taken down. I love this story, so it’s great to see this re-done.
Okay so I'm not crazy for that specific reason.
Why did it get taken down?
@@JamieJooESC I think I died in the great copyright purge.
There was some unpleasantness about the pictures being used.
Ah wonky Belgians in F1 I love late 80s early 90s F1 insanity
The original evil Santa story! He was a weird one. Though it's a real shame for the team because they obviously showed signs of promise at the start of their run in F1. Imagine if they'd had a Mattersiech (sp? I know it's wrong) instead.
He looked like a Quentin Blake illustration.
These stories of the weird money that comes into F1 are always so absolutely wild, I love it!
Watching this video about Moneytron, a literal Ponzi scheme, while getting ads for "Crypto Genius", another literal Ponzi scheme WITHIN a Ponzi scheme is *chef's kiss*
I’m beginning to think crypto is one of those ideas that on paper is a decent idea. But it’s been executed as a get rich quick/Ponzi scheme
Great story and ‘what would have been’. I always knew that Onyx was one of those backmarker DPNQ teams but not that then got a podium!
I've seen one of the cars up close in its Monteverdi livery and I was struck by how good it looked.
If I ever win the lottery, I'd definitely buy you some images for these videos lol maybe even a gif or a minute of video but let's not get too crazy here.
All jokes aside, thanks for what you do. You have an awesome channel.
The funny thing is VR quit the team because he failed to get Porsche engines which actually ended up being terrible (see Footwork), so I doubt things would have ended up any better had that happened. Well, other than stopping Monteverdi managing to make a bigger farce of the team than VR where Gregor Foitek actually quit the team because they'd turned the car into a death trap.

Before anyone says "University of Pennsylvania, big deal." That's an Ivy League school and home to the famous Wharton School of Business, where several Trump's graduated from, along with plenty of other big names of business.
Everytime I watch one of these awesome stories, I look down and wonder how you only have 89k subs... You don't get content like this other places. Keep up the good work Aiden.
Haven’t the Trumps’ businesses constantly failed tho? 🤔
@@AidanMillward they aren't batting 1000 by no means. Seems like all the "ego" business failed. Trump U, Trump steaks, Air Trump, Trump the Game. I think the books sold well. But I think no matter how you feel about the guy, he did build a multi billion dollar business. I just don't think a moron could do it, or not destroy it, so I gotta give him some credit for that.
@@wadecoppage5583 Exactly, 10% of his smallest projects failed. Over 90% of his largest works made it. Man has billions, he's clearly good at what he does.
Penn and Wharton are worthy of respect. No further comment as of March 2024.
I have been following F1 since 1975.....I always like your videos as they make me remember how good F1 was in the old days, when corporate influence represented a limited mix with a family owned style business and a fascinating sport, characterized by far less technical optimization and corporate engineering tanks. It was a time that had space for great ideas (aka fan car example), entrepreneurship and individual character. Who could ever replace Bernie as a "one man show" truly understanding what the sport needs? I liked that you consider "if" as "F1" spelled backwards. So true and funny, so good just like the old days.....
Thanks for covering this!!! I’ve actually been trying to find diecast of the 89’ Onyx
Awesome video as always, really enjoyed it!!!
Love your presentation. Very elegant and professional
That Lincolnshire joke 😂😂😂
I miss Onyx.
Thinks for redoing this story. It seems like the first 40 years of F1 were the wild west cowboy days.
In American terms, imagine a good but not elite football college like UVA or Colorado State deciding it’s going to be in the NFL.
The story of the "Raelians" is even madder.
The 1989 Onyx was part of an on track display at the Silverstone Classic this year.
The Moneytron Onyx, most famous for being the car that Stefan Johansson was in while he was pootling around the Hungaroring at the exact moment that Ayrton Senna got absolutely monstered by Nigel Mansell.
If is f1 spelled backwards! 😂. Greatness Aiden
I feel the gfx card comment, so true.
Would love a video about The split in V8 supercars in 2000 between HRT/TWR and Craig Lowndes, it was fairly ugly
nice video
At work I have a van Rossem look-a-like. I laugh inside every time we speak.
Nice story once again.
There is also a nice Sporza docu here on youtube with all the main characters :) if you know a little bit of dutch , its worth the watch )
If something seems too good to be true, it usually is........
Totally forgot about that idiot. Seen him on Dutch TV a couple of times, a man madly in love with himself and the sound of his voice.
Would love to see a storytime video on eurobrun
Boy o boy....Thanks
It wasn't Gachot who came home fifth in France. It was Johansson.
Could you also tell about Broker Magazine (Sauber sponsor from '94)?
Aidan spilling the T- \m/
8:27 Pablo Escobar tried the exact same thing! Wow!
Moneytron goes Brrrrrrrrrrr...
Boom!
"Im the fire starter"!
Tasteless livery? Whatever. That thing was gorgeous.
Tasteless livery?! How dare you Nigel Roebuck! LOL
Buying a graphics card now... i mean, if you're desperate.... but new cards are coming very soon, and the existing now 2 year old (ancient) cards are still above MSRP, and the MSRP was craziness. If you're going to be forced to spend £1000+ on a graphics card, buy one on its release date IMO then at least you get the longest at the top for your money
A whiff of Force India there!
I love the stories of these failed F1 teams.
Formula 1 🤝 Meth Dealers.
No money... no speed.
Didn´t know about that Porsche deal... But would´d it been disaster, like with Footwork in 1991..?
If you want a full documentary of the Moneytron team... Belga Sport did an episode on it.. and for some odd reason.. Van Rossem's RUclips channel has it: ruclips.net/video/vGgkKXfHkpQ/видео.html
Have you done a history of Minardi?
There is no 5 o’clock free crack giveaway
Cannot agree with Nigel Roebuck here. Onyx in my eyes had wonderful paintjobs!
>a Socialist Scam Artist
Grass is Green, Water is Wet, News at 11.
Because there are no scam artists on the other side right now…
That guy looks more like the guy behind marc dutroux
After Forti, there was Stewart GP
Stewart got MASSIVE backing from Ford to make it happen though. EJ and Forti at least did it with what they had.
@@AidanMillward Sauber was the other step up success although their background was in sports cars not formula racing. You could also add Pacific and Manor as junior teams attempting the leap although like Forti they also failed. Prior to Jordan I think it would have been Minardi who made the step up work although their finances were mostly shaky until RB bought them. This was one of the reasons Vettel's win for them in 2008 was so special as many of the original Minardi team members for whom simply turning up at the next race was often their greatest achievement finally got their reward for all the years of often fruitless toil.
@@laszlokaestner5766 Sauber had Mercedes’ backing.
@@AidanMillward True. They had been designing and running Mercedes sports car teams for them. Merc also had a relationship with Ilmor Engineering and later bought them out. They supplied the engine design and development.
Hey, I’m from Lincolnshire and I’ve got the same 11 fingers as anyone else!
You all share them?
Whats going on at the minute? Some one shed some light
of course the guy who runs an 'energy drinks' company was responsible for this...
There's a lot about this guy that is suspect but let's be real, he wasn't wrong about Bernie and Balestre.
08:37 that does not look like the Belgium parliament building or even the high court building - someone misclicked or miss indexed the image
It wasn’t supposed to be.
MoneyTron sounds like something Trump and Vince Mcmahon would have cooked up together after the success of Wrestlemanias 4 and 5
I'm always amazed (and saddened) just how many people invest in these 'get rich quick' schemes. They've been around forever in different guises and discredited but still attract thousands/millions of gullible people time after time 🤔🙄
Instead of pre-qualifying, they should have set a limit on entries.
Eh, in 1989 F1 still believed in meritocracy. If you had the money to build a car and get it to the track, you got to chance at qualifying just like everybody else. And if your car was fast enough to make the grid, you got race.
Is it weird that all the sleaze kind of makes the sport more interesting to me? Maybe GTA is corrupting me.
Leyton House could get points until 1990 they were alot worse
"nft crypto thing" lol, you know you're a boomer//completely out of the loop when....
Uh, no. Many cryptocurrencies and NFTs are very similar due to being simple pump and dumps after advertising and inflating the price/growth of the crypto/NFT
anyone got an onyx 1/43 on an onyx?
No need to bash crypto bud plenty of good things happening in that space as well as the bad.
Yeah, Moneytron is definitely the "precursor to all this NFT, Cryptocurrency stuff" Spoken like someone who truly has absolutely no clue what they're talking about.....
On 9th August 1993, after the death of our beloved King Boudewijn, Van Rossem insulted our new king Albert II during his inauguration.
This certainly didn't help to keep him out of jail.
I'm happy Van Rossem was beaten at his own game by F1 insiders.
MoneyGram
Let’s see how this comment ages.
Moneygram is a smaller Western Union. Been around for 40 years and is the second largest money transfer company in the world.
They’re a legitimate company.
1) It’s Stefano Mod-en-a, not “Mod-ain-a as you keep on incorrectly pronouncing it.
2) It’s pronounced Jean Marie Balest, (the “re” is silent), not “Bal-est-re”.
Please pronounce "Stefano Modena" correctly !
Just noticed, he attended Wharton "business school" at the same time as.... Donald J Trump!
Probably explains why they're so bad with money kekw.
HOW DO YOU BANKRUPT A CASINO!?
NFT is so stupid
What a joke
Course he was a socialist 🤣
You come across as having a very American attitude towards the term socialist. That guy doesn't sound like a socialist to me. He sounds like a con artist pretending to be socialist.
He was a con artist that was a socialist.
He was a self-proclaimed marxist.
