Great discussion, thanks for sharing. I was 31 when I lost my second foster guardian in 2001. She was a liberal form of Missionary Baptist. I converted to Christianity because part of the good news of the Gospel is being reunited with lost loved ones.
In 2007, I was convinced by conservative, fundamentalists, Oneness Pentecostals that they were the one true church and I had to join them to be “saved.” They made it clear to me that my second foster guardian went to hell after she died *because she believed in the Trinity.* But, was I saved?
The leaders of the fundamentalist denomination I was part of used fear of going to hell to control parishioners. During every church service they would preach, _”if you..”_ (fill in the blank) _”then you aint saved!”_ Of course they filled in the blank with sex outside of marriage, same gender attractions, and abortion. At the time, it seemed reasonable, however, they also filled in that blank with ridiculous stuff like owning a television or watching tv, smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol in any amount, not tithing, being a democrat, missing church, attending a different church without the pastor’s approval, etc.
