Chris, I just purchased a black and green mks through your Amazon store. Can't wait to get it. My question is: would you recommend stripping the coating? And if so; would your procedure differ from tour previous videos? I'm not sure if Tops is using something different then the other manufacturers. Thanks.
my mom gets anoyed at me cause every dern time i watch one of your videos, i freaking buy somthing! and every time i do i love it! thank you for your advice. keep up the good work.
I think these Tops Scandi Trekkers “both sizes” are great daily carry knives so versatile! Thx for showing both & how they fit in the hand! Most reviewers leave out the details, you do fantastic in depth real world presentations!!
I think your assessment here is on. These are great knives and I think you actually get a little something extra at only a moderately increased price. This is more than fair for quality, useable knives. No crazy pricing at all. Good job.
The beginning of your video when you’re saying go into the bathroom so your wife don’t hear was literally perfect freaking timing my wife walked out as soon as you were talking about Waterfill Traciann systems it was the funniest shit ever
We have similar tastes! I just held one of these at blade show last saturday. I fell in love with the grip and ergonomics of the knife. I highly thought about getting one and came back an hour later to get it but they had sold out. xD I was able to order the Black and Gray Linen Micarta handled one which I haven't seen anywhere yet. Cheers!
Owned this knife for close to a year and out of all my knives (about 50) this knife holds the edge the longest!!! Cut down a few mesquite saplings close to 4 inches wide carved a few spoons and a squirrel or two love tops!!!! On a side note I think you should pick up a boker vox rold knife badass blade but pretty bad kydex sheath great knife for the money I'd love to see a vid!
really happy you have finally seen the light on scandi grind knives now you need to go buy yourself some Mora's and spend some time with them and understand why most 'old timers' don't use anything else....That knife looks terrific though probably too costly though for me to get hold of...(I live in Australia) great vid thanks
I'm new to Tops so I'm binging videos. So far I've snagged the tex creek 69 and steel eagle 107e. Damn these knives are next level! Might need this one next!
I know this is one of your older videos, but I wanted to comment that I just recently picked up the TOPS MSF 4.0 (Mini Scandi Folder), and this thing is quickly becoming my favorite EDC Folder. Check it out, it has a great Scandi grind on it, and makes short work of everything I use it for. Been using it in a shipping and receiving warehouse lately, and it's crushing all the cutting tasks I have there. Works a hell of allot better then the rinki dink little box cutters the company provides!
IM SOLD ON THE BOB FIELD CRAFT 154CM GOT IT LAST NIGHT, ITS FREAKEN A BEAST ... MSK ON ORDER.. TOPS IS MAKING SOME GREAT BUSH KNIVES .. THANKS FOR THE REVIEW JBIRD JERSEY
@PREPAREDMIND101 Any thoughts on the Scandi Woodsman? I bought an MSK 2.5 a couple years back (a decision made quickly and easily after watching this very video of yours) and I still can't get over how great the craftsmanship and ergonomics are. I mainly carry it on my neck on fishing trips and it's sometimes my scout carry EDC. When it comes to backpacking though, I tend to leave it at home and just go with my BK2, but I'm thinking an in-between sized knife might achieve some of the best of both worlds. I'm almost certain it will be the Woodsman, and I just wanted to know if you had any input on this particular blade! Thanks!
I have this and the BOB and they are fantastic knives. The grind is more of a saber grind with a convex secondary bevel on both. It's not really what most people consider a scandi grind. It's tough and useful, but I wish they would be more clear on what they are selling.
Hey Chris I have a request I just watched your Big Bag O' Blades series and you talk about having the workshop knife sharpener and I have the same one but what I have been having some trouble with is I keep rounding off my tips, Can you do a short video on how you use the sharpener and keep your tips from rounding. Thanks Robert
You aren't turning your wrist up enough toward the tip. By the time the tip hits the belt your knife should be at about a 45° angle and go quicker at the end.
Lmao, I was totally nodding my head when you said anybody that has a b.o.b. knows what your talkin about, and theyre nodding their head. Ive also came to the buy once, cry once philosophy. Everytime I pull any of my tops blades out, im so glad I sucked it up and pulled that trigger
Ha! I didn't go in the bathroom I waited until I got to work.....That "sucker" is pretty cool! I don't know what I am going to do with all these knives. I like the look of the Micarta and that fold over kydex
I really like what it has to offer. I have not really tried out a neck knife yet, normally I just fill that role with a folder when I am out and about, or even in the woods I will just use a folder for the small work. I have always loved the convex, it is superior to hollow or flat in 99% of tasks if done right. I really like the work of a custom smith from Cater Cutlery, but his neck knives are like $200.
Yes i was wondering about shipping to cAnada chris i know i order most of my blades off of amazon .ca there more exspensive for example the bk9 is 111 and change so i was guessing u dont ship to canada but wanted to check love the videos your doing an awesome job man cheers!
Hey Chris, your vids are awesome! This knife is so sick , I had to make my own youtube video review! That trekker is definitely next. Keep up the awesome work , and awesome editing, what camera are you using ?
Chris, check out the condor sub tavian. Its a similar kind of knife but very cheap. I picked one up and it's ended up being one of my most used blades.
Knifeworks is a great site that has really good prices and do international shipping. I order lots of stuff from them and amazon, sometimes one has the best price, sometimes the other does. I think knifecenter also does international shipping but thier prices are higher on certain items and cheaper on other.
So I ordered this knife in the bathroom so my wife didn't know but forgot she gets the email from Amazon so there was a knock on the bathroom door (I know what your doing) I blamed it on you yea she didn't believe me lol but I ordered the pimped out one and the mini condor that you recommended plus the kydex sheath for it love them both so thanks
Im looking at getting a tops knife i hear great things was looking at the bob or the mohawk hunter but i cant seem to find a review mohawk hunter happen to no anything about it looks like a very nice knife
Whoa wait a minute on that Amazon comment. Remember how I told you about the ridiculous prices on US import goods in Germany? Well, I took my credit card and ordered that watch you're wearing from amazon.com, since I don't have a watch at all currently. The receipt I got says "Amazon Export Sales, Inc." So they DO have an export section that works fine.
Black Wolf maybe because it's like ebay and their international service (includes taxes and import fees) they don't permit "weapons" aka knives… bummer. what else would one buy from the USA? atb Markus
I live in Australia and I CAN'T order anything from Amazon, the ONLY way I can get a hold of my knives is through a local dealer (at a ridiculous mark up price) or through EBay.
I purchased two of these at the recent Battlbox 70% off sale. It’s my third Tops knife, I really like them, but these both had a kydex sheath that was difficult to remove. Yours seems to come out a little easier, did you have to heat it up, or did it come that way?
I have a Tops MSK, and I like it a lot. It's one of my primary outdoor neck knives, and the Tops pseudo-Scandi grind does cut extremely well. However, it lacks one of the major benefits of a true Scandi grind: the ability to easily maintain the edge in the field with just a stone. Is this an important feature? Maybe or maybe not, it depends on the user. For me it's an advantage, but, that being said, I still really like my MSK! (I do wish Tops would start offering a true Scandi grind though; that'd be awesome!)
I don't like true Scandi grinds because doing them on a stone or diamond hone just leaves an ugly scratched up edge. Combining it with a slight convex just seems to have the best of both worlds.
PREPAREDMIND101 That depends on the stone! The look of a true Scandi grind after I get finished with it is one of the things that I really like about them. I sharpen mine on a set of Norton waterstones in 220, 1,000, 4,000 & 8,000 grit and then finish up on a 2-sided paddle strop treated with CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) emulsions from KME Sharpeners, 1.5 micron (13,000 grit) on the rough leather side and 0.5 micron (60,000 grit) on the smooth leather side. It leaves the edge with a mirror polish that looks fantastic against the bead blasted finish on the rest of the blade! You can get a mirror finish using oil stones and/or diamond stones along with strops, but it's a lot more work. With oil stones you're going to need to start stropping with at least a 4 micron compound to take out the scratches from the coarser natural stones which top out at around 1,000 - 1,500 grit with the Hard Black & Hard Translucent Arkansas stones. Diamond stones, however, are available from DMT in up to 8,000 grit. An 8,000 grit diamond stone doesn't polish as well as an 8,000 grit waterstone, but it does do a pretty good job, and, unlike a waterstone, it stays flat. Waterstones have to be flattened on a regular basis, but, as far as I'm concerned, the quality of the edge they produce is worth it! (I use Naniwa Chosera waterstones with my KME Sharpener on any non-Scandi knife that doesn't get sharpened with the Work Sharp. The result is still a gorgeous mirror polished edge bevel. It's just a little smaller than the bevel on a Scandi ground knife. :) In the field I use either a Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener, typically just the ceramic rod & the leather strop, or, if I'm going to be out for more than just a couple of days -- a week long hunting or camping trip for instance -- and/or I know that I'll be using my knife a lot, I'll take a 2-sided King waterstone in 1,000 & 6,000 grit along with me. The King stone is smaller, lighter & cheaper than the Norton stones I use at home, and the 1,000/6,000 grit combination is a really good one for maintaining a razor sharp edge in the field as long as you don't let it get too dull before touching it up. This all sounds like a lot of work, but waterstones cut fast. As long as you don't let the edge get too dull or damaged you can touch up a knife in just a few minutes. It's not as fast as using the Work Sharp, but you get a much finer edge, and, considering the edge you can get with a Work Sharp, that's saying a lot!
I use Mora knives and use a pocket 1500 diamond sharpener(fake whetstone) to keep it nice combined with leather stroping from my belt, that's good enough until I get back home. If you have a good edge maintaining it should be relatively easy regardless of 'true' or pseudo scandi.... I also don't really care about scratches etc I use my knives constantly they are not for show, that being said when at home on the whetstones I use the 'smudgy' water to polish up the blade then the leather brightens it right up.
brutalbrital My problem is that, despite years of trying, I've never been able to develop the skill to get great results on a standard stone. The exception to that is knives with a true Scandi grind. On those the bevel is large enough that it's easy to feel & maintain the proper angle while using the stone. The more convex edge design on the Tops MSK, as well as all of their other 'Scandi' knives, makes sharpening on a stone considerably more difficult. At home they're easily sharpened using the Work Sharp KOE and a leather strop, but in the field it's a different story. Tops knives hold a pretty good edge for a long time, but it doesn't last indefinitely, especially under hard use. If I'm going to be in the field long enough, or am simply going to be using my knife enough, that it's going to need sharpening while still away from home neither my B.O.B., my MSK nor any other knife with a convex edge goes with me. I can very easily sharpen a knife with a true Scandi grind using just a stone, and I can sharpen a knife with a standard, flat ground secondary bevel fairly easily using either my Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener or my DMT Diafold Magna-Guide system, but convex or 'Scandivex' edges, while easily sharpened at home, are a pain in the ass to sharpen in the field, at least for me.
Gunslinger454 I only have one knife with a pseudo- scandi edge and I get the job done with what I described earlier, perhaps a little more practice, I'm not trying to insult please but it's hard to know where your having trouble without seeing it. Perhaps another technique you could try is wet and dry sandpaper put the paper on a flat surface, fold it and work up to the edge , then you just strop as usual. hope this helps mate
Wait til you get a hold of a Bark River bravo 1 or gunny or fox river. You wanna talk about great bushcraft knives, imo brkt is damb tought to beat. I love their convex grinds and even though 1095 is a good steel, brkts 3v, cpm d2 and a2 are a lil better. Plus now they just came out with elmax and 4v knives, id love to get one of each but they are too damb expensive now. Like you I arrivec late to the scandi party but im becoming a fan and talk about easy stropping, nothing is as easy to strop as a scandi, just lay it down flat, do some swipes and raise it a hair on the last 2 to 3 passes and you're set.
LOL on the bathroom joke. It's like getting guy time through youtube. Has anyone tried this knife with a tek lok for horizontal carry? If so what size tek lok did you use?
Lovin this knife, too bad amazon doesn't recognize the little country just north of the epicenter. Seriously its getting FREEKIN annoying that they'll ship to Guam for free but Canada? Where the hell is that??? Sheesh!!!!
+sniperinthedark im thinking that has to do with amazon.ca .but i agree .sucks paying so much for stuff up here .for ever shopping around on internet to get good prices on knives.
I must have gotten a bad heat treat or something on my Msk neck knife. Glad ya got a razors edge on yours mine won’t cut warm butter. And I can sharpen almost anything, I’ve contacted tops twice, no reply
This knife is so great I've already bought a second one, the green/black G10 version.
It is an awesome knife! I just wish they green/black G10 version had been available when I bought mine. It's a lot prettier than the brown Micarta!
Chris, I just purchased a black and green mks through your Amazon store. Can't wait to get it. My question is: would you recommend stripping the coating? loved the beginning of the video. laughed so hard.
Cuz it’s true Ha,
It was good , I laughed.
I absolutely love my Tops mini scandi. It is about the perfect edc fixed blade.
I got one back in March, love it. It's in the shop right now getting some Kydex work on it. I am addicted to tops.
my mom gets anoyed at me cause every dern time i watch one of your videos, i freaking buy somthing! and every time i do i love it! thank you for your advice. keep up the good work.

The beginning of your video when you’re saying go into the bathroom so your wife don’t hear was literally perfect freaking timing my wife walked out as soon as you were talking about Waterfill Traciann systems it was the funniest shit ever
Thanks man, for helping us people outside the US:) keep up the good work!!!
that is exactly the type of knife I've been looking for!
i love your sense of humor.absolutely hilarious. keep it up

Great video! Just got this little knife and a set of tops knives I bought from a guy off of eBay. Looking forward to trying it out.
Good job on the video .. I like that model and the grind along with the size..
Hey Chris I have a request I just watched your Big Bag O' Blades series and you talk about having the workshop knife sharpener and I have the same one but what I have been having some trouble with is I keep rounding off my tips, Can you do a short video on how you use the sharpener and keep your tips from rounding. I got a BOB about a year ago. Best fixed blade ive ever bought. I put a secondary bevel on it though. You should try that
Lmao, I was totally nodding my head when you said anybody that has a b.o.b. knows what your talkin about, and theyre nodding their head. Ive also came to the buy once, cry once philosophy. Everytime I pull any of my tops blades out, im so glad I sucked it up and pulled that trigger
I was thinking about getting those also. You should also check out a knife company called survive knives
Well it worked.... I bought it. Water filtration kit should be arriving tomorrow.
Your sence of humour makes me laugh :')
That was the best intro ever.
Ha! I didn't go in the bathroom I waited until I got to work.....That "sucker" is pretty cool! I don't know what I am going to do with all these knives. I like the look of the Micarta and that fold over kydex
Thanks Chris!
Chris I got the G10 model for $65.00 incl pstg on Ebay great knife & great deal
I’m turning my mini scandi to a boot knife great knife
I really like what it has to offer. I have not really tried out a neck knife yet, normally I just fill that role with a folder when I am out and about, or even in the woods I will just use a folder for the small work.
I have always loved the convex, it is superior to hollow or flat in 99% of tasks if done right. I really like the work of a custom smith from Cater Cutlery, but his neck knives are like $200.
Yes i was wondering about shipping to cAnada chris i know i order most of my blades off of amazon .ca there more exspensive for example the bk9 is 111 and change so i was guessing u dont ship to canada but wanted to check love the videos your doing an awesome job man cheers!
the tops cub has the modified scandi grind as well! Decent knife but the nylon sheath sucks..I think so anyways!
that almost looks like a saber grind... my favorite grind!
Hey Chris, your vids are awesome! This knife is so sick , I had to make my own youtube video review! That trekker is definitely next. Keep up the awesome work , and awesome editing, what camera are you using ?
Uuugh bought the esee izula 2... if only i waited a few months, love the look of the MSK. That esee warranty though...
Also *nods head* yep yep yep kicks ass (bob)
Chris, check out the condor sub tavian. Its a similar kind of knife but very cheap. I picked one up and it's ended up being one of my most used blades.
Knifeworks is a great site that has really good prices and do international shipping. I order lots of stuff from them and amazon, sometimes one has the best price, sometimes the other does. I think knifecenter also does international shipping but thier prices are higher on certain items and cheaper on other.
Best intro on youtube!
Great video!! is this the Jessica of neck knives? is it comparable with the IZULA II or similar?
gotta get one!...now! thanks chris
Hi I got one it is awesome
So I ordered this knife in the bathroom so my wife didn't know but forgot she gets the email from Amazon so there was a knock on the bathroom door (I know what your doing) I blamed it on you yea she didn't believe me lol but I ordered the pimped out one and the mini condor that you recommended plus the kydex sheath for it love them both so thanks
Im looking at getting a tops knife i hear great things was looking at the bob or the mohawk hunter but i cant seem to find a review mohawk hunter happen to no anything about it looks like a very nice knife
A great review. Thank you.

That's a cool knife man.
I was waiting for this review. I want one!
Good work :) i love my bob but the spine on mine is really soft. How is yours?
Seems fine to me.
Don't worry Chris, I "go to the bathroom" for all of your knife vids so no one knows when i'm going to buy a new knife
Whoa wait a minute on that Amazon comment. Remember how I told you about the ridiculous prices on US import goods in Germany?

I'd like to know more about it. I've had countless people try to order from my Amazon store and were told they couldn't.
PREPAREDMIND101 You're right unfortunately. Seems I was lucky with the watch, the knife doesn't work.
Black Wolf maybe because it's like ebay and their international service (includes taxes and import fees) they don't permit "weapons" aka knives… bummer. what else would one buy from the USA?

I live in Australia and I CAN'T order anything from Amazon, the ONLY way I can get a hold of my knives is through a local dealer (at a ridiculous mark up price) or through EBay.
I was watching this in the bathroom already!
You are kicking tail with the tops vids.
Hahaha the beginning was very funny.👍👍 nice knife.
NICE. thanks chris!
Thanks from overseas :-)
Will it throw a spark with a ferro rod? Or does it need mods?

Perhaps another technique you could try is wet and dry sandpaper put the paper on a flat surface, fold it and work up to the edge , then you just strop as usual. hope this helps mate
Okay I'm sold
Ha absolutely right gotta play hide & seek with wife 😂😂😂
This is why I love this channel the scence of humor. Go hide from your wife cause your gonna buy something. Lol I love it
Oh also I found this really cool pocket strop I ordered one it's great if I want to send you one where can send it
Can I sharpen this on a Spyderco Sharpmaker?
LMFAO @ intro 😀🤣
you had me at "hello" lol.. but how do u sharpen your scandi grind ??? worksharp ???
how is this compared to m1 subcompact from tops what would you recommend
Look at the gso line from SURVIVE! Knives
Does it come with any sort of belt clip for the sheath? I'm going to buy it either way but I really don't want to get a new sheath for it.
+paul roberts no, it's setup as a necker
Oh well, I'll get it anyway. I've been carrying a CRKT SPEW but I want something with a more robust tip.
Any thoughts on a ferro rod mod??
LOL on the bathroom joke. It's like getting guy time through youtube. Has anyone tried this knife with a tek lok for horizontal carry? If so what size tek lok did you use?
sweet knife ..
Yeah ive been getting addicted too an also the moras.
Nice video,dude !!!!! ;) thx

And I can sharpen almost anything, I’ve contacted tops twice, no reply
lmao love the aside.
