Hi Bill in the UK we call the rotating part in the 5 lever lock a curtain. If you look at the key and count the cuts you will see there are more than 5 cuts in the key. This is because when you put the key in from 1 side of the lock it uses one half of the key and when you put the key in from the other side it uses the other half of the key.
So when you get a lock that works from one side but not the other it can be down to the key if it’s been dropped it could be bent or damaged. Just some info for people who may have a problem with their lock and not know why...
The key will normally be symmetrical unless the lock is used on like a shipping container or gun safe where the lock is only accessible from one side.

Yeah, but I didn't want to over-complicate the tensioning description. I was afraid it would discourage noobs thinking about taking up lever locks... I have no idea why I identified the curtain alternately as "shutter" and "curtain"... brain fart probably.
This Is Exactly What I Was Going To Comment It Was Driving Me Mad LOL 😂. Also when Bill mentioned the Snib as a Nib LOL. I think the only other thing that could confuse Noobs to mortise lock picking is where Bill A few times kept switching between four & five gauge key/tensioners when its only 5 & 7 Gauge...! I still find lever locks a little intimidating but it’s really cool and I find myself feeling like I need to speak in a medieval twang when picking. A decent set of mac tools would definitely help on the journey for anyone thinking of giving it a go.

Good morning Bill, thanks again for an amazing video. One quick question if you have time, you explained how to modify a key to make a tensioner, however, what about an instance where no key is available for you to modify, how would you go about tensioning the lock then?
Well, you COULD use a length of heavy gauge wire (as I have done in a few videos), but it is much more difficult to keep it aligned and properly tensioned. The keys for most mortise locks are pretty standard, so you can usually use a key from one lock in another manufacturer's without issue. The Yale in the demo was a bit unusual but it was the only one I had on hand for the video.

Wow, I thought lever locks were obsolete and nobody was making them anymore. My grandparents had a house with lever locks for some interior doors. Come to think of it, I bet that most jail door locks are lever locks, but with larger keys, convoluted key ways, and the center part of the key way acts as the shutter.
I'm Me I have never used or even held a lever lock as far as I know, but keys are much more frequent to see around, I guess people like the aesthetics. Most everything I have seen on tv, movies & Internet searches most prison e/jail locks are electromagnetic so the CO’s don’t have to carry keys and be a bigger safety risk than they already are. Most other locks are pin tumbler from what I have seen in currentish facilities. There are several videos on RUclips. Bill has picked a couple in videos 333, 338 & 1138 and they are massive! Lockpickinglawyer picks one in video 919. There are a few people that pick prison lever locks if you search.

Bill - Greetings from Slovenia. Here in Europe the Euro lock pins are on the bottom. In your videos I see the pins are always on top. Is there an advantage to picking locks with pins on top? If you are forced to pick locks with pins on the bottom what are some good tips?

Have you thought about looking at safe locks. I have 7 and higher lever locks if you want to look at them :) Single and double sided.

Actually on most 2 lever including the yale (mh & y pre cut keys) the bolt is tension in the centre of the key not the end.
I know I'm a year off, but what happened to Mac? No YT and no website.
How about railroad lever locks? Especialy the Adlake designs which are still made and used but mostly in Railroad Museums.

Have not had Front Door for many Years bcs of Jammed Latch. was 'soo close' 1\8 in - but . . lost grip.
Tried working around the inner works to pull\ unblock what moved, (broke) stopping latch from moving. At least i did have the 'dip in Bend'. lol
(Obvious) this has Door knob, and with Split (name?) - not spindle (maybe ?) now stuck.
Gave Up, tired of failing. Too many other things need work - i'll mess up - ha ha oh brother. = ]
Hinges removed - didn't work either. Big Boot will split frame, NO Thanks, Plaster walls. sorry for bitching ramble, just need courage. Cheers!

Something I dont understand is why this type of lock considered less safe if you need very specific tools to open while most pin locks you can tension with almost anything and rake/pick with improvised tools?

Absolutely! I use it all the time but given the expense and scarcity of these specialized tools I wanted to show off some "everyman's tools" that are both inexpensive and available from AndyMac now. Andy's tools do the same thing as the commercial tools, but at a fraction of the cost.

Why did you pick it from the inside of the door? Surly its from the other side of the lock you will be picking from

Where are these types of locks even used? All I usually see are dead bolts and handle sets.
There's at least 6 in the hall I'm caretaker at.. On store rooms and access.. (Wales, UK)

I don't own any lever lock tools yet. I've been wanting to make a set but haven't gotten around to it yet. Maybe I should get in touch with Andy Mac. Those tools of his look really nice.

Even though the tools are nice, they’re super pricey for little more than fancy shaped and polished piano wire. Piano wire is super cheap, and if you put in a little time and be sure of your dimensions for the picks, you’ll spend maybe 6-10$ on your tools. Peace.

the 2 levers are cut to the same depth so that the key can be used from both sides! That's why that key looked so weird.
Andys channelle is great, and his tools are awesome.

Not a shutter lock, a Curtain lock
Curtain locks come in 5, 5.5, 6, 7 & 8 gauge
You showed an ERA Viscount 5 lever curtained lock which is a 7 gauge NOT a 4 gauge
The wires look decent but compared to what is available ie GJLocks for instance then these tensioners look crap in comparison.
