  • At 04.12 in the evening, the crater collapsed towards the back, and sent all the lava flooding down into the "back" of the crater.
I only missed the first 3-4 seconds of the collapse.

Thanks for the different, spectacular view of the collapse. This clearly shows why you never get close to a volcano. There was no chance to outrun that initial lava flow from the collapse. I remember someone from the eruption a couple years ago was climbing the actual cone of the volcano on one of the live cams.

Wow you're either the luckiest volcano watcher in Iceland or very committed to spending hours and hours up there. 4am! The way it just gushed out of there and covered the entire area in about 30 seconds is really quite scary. Makes you remember that lava is a liquid and can move just as quickly as water when it's not restricted to a set path, like most lava flows are.

Ya, when I saw that rushing lava spread out like that I freaked! That would be horrible if people were close to it at that moment. Spreading faster than you could run. It aint safe to be within 100 yards of these things. unreal

Great catch! We can only get an idea of the magnitude from a drone, the crater is probably over 30m high, so that is a lot of lava. It also shows why you should not get too close to the cone: Running across a broken surface to get away from it would not be easy!
