Great discussion. I used mats for a very long time but now I am going now to a range that uses grass, although it is twice the distance from my place. Of course, I hit a lot of fat shots now on grass. All of these shots would bounce off if I used a mat. So when I go back to mats in an indoor facility, I will put some masking tape on the floor before the ball. That way I can discard the launch monitor data if I hit it fat.

A debate that will never be settled. When I moved here from Minnesota, I had the opportunity to play and practice outdoors 12 months a year. In the north, winter golf practice is indoors on mats or not at all. I practice a lot with foam golf balls in my yard, so distance hit is all relative. I don't like creating a lot of divots so I often use a practice mat. There's a lot I can figure out even with no launch monitor. Spray powder on the clubface to measure center hits. Video any angle I choose and get instant feedback. I do hit real balls to practice pitch shots from varying distances. Most players (like me)) would do well to practice short game shots to make better scores anyway.

Absolutely well said. Practice > no practice.

I think repetition is the key. If you continue to practice the wrong things that is what you will take out to the course with you. If you practice the right things that will go to the course with you. So your basic golf game can be practiced inside or out. I believe lies are the biggest detriment to hitting on mats. Always a perfect lie inside! Outside you have sidehill, uphill, divots, heavy rough etc.
I have had an indoor sim for about 4 years now and on sim courses i shoot high 70s consistently but on a real course i shoot low to mid 80s....so most translates fine but there is something to be said for a perfect lie everytime.
    Looking forward to Sully's!!

Hi Don, yes, you do have a point. However, most of the time when you are hitting outside, one would give themselves a pretty good lie anyway, even on grass. Very rarely can you actually practice, with repetition all the potential lies you might have on the golf course. I think the bottom line is that those who practice are going to get better faster than those who don't practice. And the more practice you get in, the better you are going to become. For the most part. Thanks for watching. See you soon.

i hated mats before i started hitting the ball well. I thought it would mask my fat shots and i would develop bad habits. Now i like mats better because its a tighter lie and you can feel clean contact.

Too many shots off the mats and my wrist starts to hurt
