- Super important pickleball strategy: Whether you're playing mixed doubles or gender doubles, sharing the court 50/50 at all times is actually hurting your partner. This video focuses on 3 instances when your best strategy should be to cover MORE than your half of the court (regardless of gender!).

My partner uses movement like this to confuse everyone on thr court including me 😅
great video! I think its very important to learn how to cover you partner, especially when they are out of position. But I will never understand why some men (even pros) will go all the way into their partners side (pushing them out of the court) in order to just dink a ball. Especially when their partner is well in position. I would assume that the female partner whos 5.0+ is more than capable of dinking. So why throw themselves out of position, for a dink?
The man is controlling the play doing that. Protecting the weaker player.
Good analysis - thank you for sharing! I've had my doubts about the excessive poaching by men and/or stronger players, but I understand better what's happening. I do think it's still excessive because it takes the partner out of the game and can leave a gaping hole. As you pointed out, when partners are misaligned is a great time for poaching, and makes sense.
The guy in red shorts cost them the point by the last poaching lob. Men poach too much, the woman is more than capable of hitting a better shot back.

Given your experience, I’d love to hear more about the scenario where the guys seems to “hog” the court as some reviewers noted.
I can understand that in some cases, this is done to protect a weaker player. But in this case, all 4 players seem very capable, so I see this approach as being more strategic to throw off opponents. But if both players were lefties, would the near court’s strategy result in the female player taking that middle lane more? Coming from tennis, the middle ball usually goes to the player with the forehand for reasons like: accessible power, ability to place the ball with more control, body positioning etc.
Is this something that factors into the appearance of one player “hogging” the middle?

Thanks! Learning to get better after losing is also a key skill in life. We know what we need to work on and have been drilling hard since then! That was both of our first times playing pro mixed so great experience overall. Back to the lab then competing again in 2024!

Why don't more people play more drop shots in pickleball in general? Is it due to etiquette or lack of skill? As a 4.0 tennis player I can see that a well placed drop shot would win a large majority of points in a similar 4.0-4.5 level pickleball. ie. tell me why I should try to win a point on drop shots whenever in a competitive match. Fun play I understand it would be frowned upon
alot of people cant do them, I used them all the time, also unless its perfect it usually doesn't get people above 4.0
I am a tennis player who plays both. Drop shots are easier in pickleball than tennis. But it is also easier to retrieve them as the count is small.
Short angles is what I feel people are not using much in pickleball. I believe it could be due to fear of giving back angles to your opponents
Why 50/50 is wrong in a pro game. At the majority of recreational game with a new partner almost everygame, 50/50 works 95% of the time. The only time I cover the basline forehand is if my partner says to cover the forehand. At the net, I don't poach her space if we're both at the net. I still take the forehand volley but not like your video.

LOL what if it was a violation to enter your partner’s box? That would throw a wrench into things. Would make it really easy to isolate the weaker player!
Poaching works! Not all the time, but with discipline
two ball hogs and two passive women. Really unwatchable. I know it can be successful but damm.... this is not team play.
It is a strategy that the team comes up with together. I assure you if my partner disagreed and wanted to play with someone else, she could easily find someone who is better at pickleball than me

This is literally the strategy the top teams have worked out to be optimal for making them the strongest they can be. Making the team substantially weaker by insisting that anything in one half of the court belongs to that player seems like the exact opposite of team play. It is catering to an individual wanting more shots even if it is bad for the team.
This has been happening forever in other sports, have you seen high level badminton where the tactic is to get the woman to the net so the man can do the smashing from the back of the court? This is standard even at club level.
