I honestly felt frustrated that his departure was so short cuz of how unresolved his feelings of being useless and his lack of progress was after he openly spoke to the group. They managed his growth and characterization decently, but it still felt lacking (he just made up with the group in 1 scene without a talk with Futaba about his jealousy, Ryuji about their smack-talk, or the group about how he felt their relationship didn't seem like a "fair deal" as he felt useless; his relationship with Haru was never really explored or expanded upon, just like his feelings of not making progress in Mementos). He's not a bad character (despite the lost potential in the mid-late game). I don't think he's misunderstood by the fanbase or anything, they seem to just dislike his way of speaking down to Ryuji (which I feel is just how those 2 bond). He gets his shit wrecked a lot. The bad ending split juxtaposed yosuke as THE BAD GUY. The one needed to grow up. Morgana is never once held accountable for being a douche. Even teddy gets more comeuppance for his bad traits. It never feels earned how they handle him; he never earns being your friend.
