  • One of my favorite Canadian whiskies based on price, quality, and flavor... OK, the fake decanter bottle is a bit cheesy but some may argue that it adds character.

It's a bit simple, but I do like it.

I like it too, especially the price... It's the cheapest bottle available locally and every liquor store has it.

a friend don't like dark horse for the exact same reason the black currants. the basic Alberta premium rocks I get it often.

+Dave Nicholson Yeppers... I get it often too. What amazes me is that it took so long for me to get around to reviewing it.

yep! I like the original better too. Dark horse actually has some sherry added to it (1 or 2%?), which is why it tastes weird. I love alberta premium mostly for making cocktails because its so cheap, but also to sip on occasiionally. One of the best value whiskies in canada.

I just picked up another bottle of this stuff, it's only $25.00 a bottle here in New Brunswick. Pretty great value for money IMO.
I must be a bit of a wimp though because drinking it neat is a bit rough for my tastes. But if I add just a tiny splash of water to it, it becomes a very smooth, creamy and rich tasting dram, a completely different experience.
The Dark Horse has its fans but I don't know if I was all that keen for it, it sort of didn't taste like what I expect a whisky to taste like, it was alright but not really a favourite. For my money, I see just the old tried and true, plain Jane Alberta Premium as the best choice.
A really decent drink without breaking the bank!

They released a 25 and 30 year version of this some years back, Alberta only I believe. Would love to see those released again.
Masterson's Rye, Whistle Pig and Jefferson's Rye all use Alberta Distilleries sourced Rye.
    Cheers

+peter white Interesting... I enjoy it as is without an age statement, but my mouth is watering at the idea of a 25 or 30 year old version, with maybe 45 or 46 ABV? I tried some Forty Creek 27 year old rye at the recent whisky festival, and it was a straight rye rather than some rye blended with some malt and some corn... That was really nice. I imagine the Alberta 25 would be a lot like it.

I read in the local paper (online) of my village back home in Sweden, that they now have a Whiskey club, which meet up 6 times a year to sample different whiskies.,. you would have fitted right in, I'm sure! :)

+Rob BasicModelling We have whisky clubs over here locally. I would love to join one, but they probably don't meet at times that are convenient for me like Monday morning at 7AM... Working nights makes social activities a bit difficult at times.

      @BasicModelling 8 лет назад

foodquig Yes, I know that.. had to give up on one of my modelling clubs due to work and can't go to any others but the local one in town.. and now my hours have changed slightly I have to ask permission to be late one Monday a month.. or rather, make the time up another night.. pain in the rear anatomy, if you ask me. Would have loved to attend at least another couple of clubs nearby, there are plenty in the area.. but alas, working nights means I can't..

+rveeing Martinique was one brief afternoon of a Caribbean cruise... I preferred St. Martin, Orient Bay. Now that's where I'd really like to go again, but I'd settle for Varadero, Cuba.

+Dave Nicholson Special old is not quite as good, but it's not exactly bad either... They cost the same according to the BC Liquor Store web page.

foodquig They are almost the same price. I like Alberta more.
