A few notes to add to the video - when bought new back when it was released, the Flat Banana puzzle came with a really cute sticker on the shrink wrap, with some interesting typography. Look it up on Worthpoint if you want to see photos of it.
I wish I had emphasized more how much the pieces in the Spilt Milk portfolio page look like Springbok pieces. I really think he may have just painted the top, bottom, and sides of a vintage Springbok puzzle to take that photo when pitching the product.
And, I have now been in touch with Mike, who ran the Springbok Fever website back in the day. He is still active in the puzzle community, and while he couldn’t help me find a copy of Little Boy Blue, he did share a few more things that I hope I can cover in a follow-up video if I ever get my hands on a copy!
I actually don't do puzzles. I do however greatly enjoy watching you do them. >^_^
That was so nice of you to like my comment can’t wait to watch more of your videos
could maybe try to use a magic eraser for the front of the box? test a small part and be gentle perhaps. (cause I've used a magic eraser on an object to try and clean it and went to far and took off cover art.) Something to ponder. Thanks for all your great content! :)
Also, if there is no expiration date on that contest for the Green Gruesome, you could submit it for the month you complete it to see if you get a prize ;)
Try cleaning it with an alcohol swab. I'm doing that as we speak with my hair straightener.
Thank you Karen so much for the content about my dad, James Bollbach. My sister and I both were moved to tears. You do such a good job with these videos and you convey your puzzle fascination so well. Much respect!
I’m so glad to share all of the information!
It was wonderful to hear some of the stories and see some of the artwork of Mr. Bollbach in this video - he seems to have been an endlessly creative man, and I really appreciated Karen and the younger Bollbachs sharing the fascinating story of his innovative work in jigsaw puzzles!
The amount of research you put in and knowledge you have about puzzle is so impressive. You should call your channel Karen Puzzle PhD
or Karen: Master Puzzler
I agree!
Legit could write a thesis about puzzling history, the level of research is impressive!
I really love how you’re able to connect with people connected to these puzzles. I can’t imagine how it must have felt for James Bollbach’s kids to get the chance to share their father’s work with someone who truly cares. They got to go through his portfolio and talk about things that otherwise might never have come out if you hadn’t made a video about some cool vintage puzzles and posted them on youtube. I think that’s pretty RED. I mean, rad. 😊
my first thought was, how fun would it be if Julian from Baumgartner Restoration attempted to clean your springbok puzzle boxes!
Love Julian 😀
Karen your videos help me so much. Dealing with grief with my father who passed from Alzheimer’s has been excruciating, but you joyful and colorful videos seriously help. Love love love. ♥️
I'm so sorry to hear about your dad ❤️
Oh my gosh, me too! I have been obsessively doing puzzles while watching Karen Puzzles since my sister died two months ago. Grief sucks but the distraction is most welcome. I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. Sending hugs your way.
The info from the inventor's children was so fun to hear. It's so interesting to see the changes between the prototype vs the manufactured puzzle. What a fun video to watch! [Red]
I looked at the “dirt” on the silver one (not the red one. Sorry, clumsy). Almost positive it’s mildew/mold. The things that work tend to be bleach, vinegar, Tilex, and hydrogen peroxide. But vinegar is the not one that MUGHT not damage the paper. But it might. Sometimes you can get the mold out but still leave the discoloration.
If it were me, it’d be worth it because I’m very sensitive to mold. You could always try to match and cover the remaining part with paint/nail polish.
Good luck!
I have done both the rainbow gradient and solid black Ravensburger Krypt puzzles and they're competely different experiences. The gradient one was super easy (imo) since it also has less pieces I guess but I still loved it because I had never done a gradient puzzle before and the cut was interesting. I'd say it took me about 3 hours without looking at the solution provided in the box. The black one was so extremely hard, I gave up trying to do it without the solution sheet after like 1,5 hours simply because even getting the edges to fit together was hard. The cut is wonderfully done since it's a mix of normal puzzle piece sections and very oddly shaped ones. I'd say all in all it took me about 8-ish hours to do it with a little help from the solution sheet. I wanna try doing it again without help one day though.
The spilt milk and wet paint puzzles would have been really cool if they'd been made of plastic to make them extra glossy
I like the Krypt puzzles best just because they actually seem like they would be really enjoyable to put together rather that just frustrating
Solid color puzzles are a metaphor for life. The joy must be found in the doing, the challenge, not the end result.
You puzzle for the nobility of bringing order out of chaos, not for the reward at completion.
So I was watching a movie called “the nice guys” set in the 70s and in one scene I’m like 95% sure they have the red springbok puzzle except they had all the pieces upside down and the green side showing. My mind immediately went to your videos!
27:04 - I like that orientation! The rounded off edged never meet! I have an old 'Big Ben' from the 1950s that's printed on the 'back'! At a distance you don't see the outline!
Maybe, if its dirt, you could use basic baby-wipes for the "mirror" puzzle box. Rub gently so as to not get any scratches if the dirt starts moving around and try no to stay in the same area too long so that you don't wet the cardboard. You can then use a microfiber cloth before It dries in order to give it a smooth look with no streaks. That's just my idea!
It looks like mold. Not sure how to clean it without bleaching the box. But it might look better than it does now. Try vinegar.
@@hopegold883 That was my thought, too.
or with isopropyl alcohol and then clean with water. But it does indeed look like the mold has already eaten the shine on top.
Oh my goodness -- great opening shot, but how long did it take you to seaparate all the solid puzzle pieces again? 😮😅
I actually haven't done it yet. That's about to be my Sunday project 🙊
That's my thought toolol
Opening up a vintage puzzle and ultimately making it up is awesome. Never seen the point of collections sitting untouched in cabinets. The point of a puzzle is to make it. Keep on being the most refreshing channel on RUclips ❤
This is weirdly fascinating to me and we definitely need some orange and really good blue puzzles. Also more green because that's my favorite color.
Kuddos to you for allowing that red ketchup puzzle to take up space in your collection! Fun video and I loved the color graph. Thanks for making my day better!
This is a 34 minutes-ish video and I’m here for it. What a lovely way to spend a Sunday! 👏🏼
could be 340 minutes long and id still watch
Love this video, really shows how many solid colour and “red” puzzles Karen has which is crazy!! 😂😂 Would love to see an orange puzzles some day too 🧡! I’ve never done a solid colour puzzle myself but have done pattern puzzles before which are kind of similar but easier to do since it’s more obvious to find a piece in the formation. I would love to try BlueKazoo or Ravensburger Krypt Puzzles the most since I love both brands and are very high quality 🧩
@@lazyhomebody1356 That would great to use as a puzzle picture. It could be made into a fun puzzle similar to the grass puzzle.
I wonder how excited these companies get when Karen reaches out lol. I'm sure they get super excited googling Karen, knowing she'll truly appreciate all the info they're sharing.I find that so sweet! and I love how Karen BUYS these puzzles from subscribers who have them and offer them up to her.
I would recommend you purchase a cheap used book that had similar damage, as well as one that has similar type shiny paper. You can then test different cleaners to see what might work and what might damage it. That being said, as a book collector, I don’t repair damage unless you are dealing with mold or insect infestation. It’s generally better to leave things alone when it comes to paper. Good luck!
Karen
I don't remember if I told you about a 1500 piece mostly white puzzle that I attempted. Key word there is "attempted". It was a snow scene. There was a narrow stream running through part of it. A twig would be standing here and there. I don't remember who made it but there was no special or unique cut. All standard shapes. I got about 3 or 400 pieces including the border done. That's as far as I got.
Thanks for all the background information on the puzzles.
Your key word for us is red.
Thanks
Bob
Yes. I have learned so much about puzzles. But honestly, the real reason I come here is to see you smile! You just make me happy!
I love that red cardboard on the back of the Enchantment puzzle 😮 and that Red Alert! puzzle is perfect for Valentines Day 🌷
seconding you on the "why are there so many reds", I'd love to see more pink, orange, green and purple. we need some variety in here! also we need orange so we can make a proper Pride collection of puzzles... ooooh, someone should make a series of solid-colored puzzles where the patterns overlap slightly so the middle third of each puzzle would connect to the middle third of the previous puzzle and the next puzzle on the rainbow and they could make a Pride flag together... someone get this idea to a puzzle company xD
Sunkist should do the orange and a yellow puzzle ! 💕 Red is pretty well represented.
I've never done a solid colour puzzle and, on the whole, the idea is a definite no for me. However ... I really do like the cuts of the Krypt puzzles, so, if I was ever to try one, it would be one of those. Especially if they did a purple version!💜 More purple puzzles, less red, please!
Definitely interested in the ravensburger krypt puzzles. I like the idea of the mixed shapes within the puzzle, plus I love their quality.
Looove the history of all these things. Thank you also for acknowledging and explaining the name of the yellow puzzle.
I had such a stressful day today and your video just made it better by calming me enough to go to sleep. As I said before, truly love these types of videos and hearing the interesting stories about vintage puzzles.
Thank you ❤
Wow, those puzzles at 11:52 are fantastic. The flower one really caught my eye but it’s just in context with the other 2.
But the red, pink and white puzzle is like a pink camouflage. If I had to choose one then I would find it really difficult to choose between the solid colour and the camouflage-like puzzle.
Thanks again for sharing this video, much appreciated 🙂❤️
Wow, Karen, you have done a lot of research on these puzzles, Well done!! 👍😊💞💞
Love how passionate you are about puzzles!
I had never even heard of solid color puzzles before and now I REALLY want to try one! Even if it's red ;)
i LOVE all the info!! thank you Karen!!
Red.
The ravensburger gradient puzzle is so pretty. I can't wait to get my own.
So many puzzles and what a whirlwind tour of puzzle history, thanks for this roundup!
31:32 the fact that you laid down the pieces in a line just for the change of topic shot was so cool and commendable.
I have to admit that you gave me the idea to attempt my first solid color puzzle :) It was the gold Krypt and it was such a unique experience that now I have completed all of the recent Krypts (Gold, Silver, Black, Pink, Gradient, Mint) and I am waiting patiently for Blue Kazoo ones to restock. I really hope there are some support groups for solid color puzzle addicts, because I might need it soon 😅
Love your channel! Who knew the history of jigsaw puzzles was so interesting??
The Pink Krypt puzzle was SO TRIPPY combined with the blue Ravensburger board material (not sure what you call it ;) ! It took me AGES to do... but I finished the gradient in a few hours!
We started doing puzzles at work in the break room this year and someone brought in the red wet paint puzzle this week!
What a well researched video! Thanks for sharing! Ravensburger have also just released a teal Krypt puzzle! You need it!! 😍
I’d love to see you make your own puzzle line! You have the knowledge of enough good jigsaw puzzles to make them quite interesting.
Karen, I LOVE your channel! Sometimes I can't believe I'm sitting here watching someone talk all about puzzles. LOL But I do love me some puzzles and you are so informative about them. Recently I found a Vintage Springbok puzzle at the Goodwill Outlet where everything is sold by the pound. Mine is 1.19 lb. It's the Visions of Sugarplums one. Looks to be very challenging!!! I looked it up and it's from 1983 so we'll see if all of the pieces are there. (1000) Wish me luck!
I did a solid color, holographic gold puzzle that just about blew out my retinas! I've also done the, "Straw in a Needle Stack" puzzle that was in one of the old adverts you showed. That was a fun puzzle to do.
Karen has definitely inspired me to try a single color puzzle 😂
Hi Karen, I have never tried to do a solid color puzzle nor will I ever try because I would end up seeing red 🤣. Thanks for another great video
I'm new to puzzling and binge watched literally all of your videos since December. you are such a cute person 💗 looking forward to the minion puzzle you're doing rn 😍
I love the purple one! I have to say, I will be adding the gradient krypt to my wish list now! I’ve never done a solid colour one, nor even RED, I did do 1000 piece gravel though!
I love the amount of effort and research you put into the vintage puzzle videos.
Also I really want to get you a mini vacuum for the puzzle dust 😂
Great video Karen! Thank you for showing some of our vintage puzzles from the 80's and 90's! We would love to see you do the green grass one! Should we create that April fools puzzle for real? ;)
Good luck finding a little boy blue. I haven't gotten that hit at all but still actively trying to help
Such an interesting video . Thanks for sharing
🌈This is so fascinating! I've never tried a solid colour jigsaw puzzle, but I have done the Krypt gradient puzzle, which is very easy. Maybe as an effort to rebalance the spectrum, it doesn't have any red in it! ❤
I don't know what year your Krypt puzzles were released, but they look quite modern. My father owns two Krypt puzzles from 1997. "Krypt 1" is gray and "Krypt 3" is pink.
Edit: I forgot to say that I tried both puzzles, but I kept giving up. I really started a lot of attempts, but was probably always too young (maybe 8 years old?)
I heard from another viewer about the earlier versions of the Krypt puzzles, which I didn't know about! Send me an email if your dad is ever willing to part with his!
Solid colour puzzles are not for me but your passion is addictive and the history you've dug up make this video is super interesting. I prefer nice pictures that are not impossible. A solid red puzzle would make me see red!
You are charming and adorable! I'm so glad you stumbled into this niche market!! It's so fun to watch you, and enjoy what you learn and share with us 🤗❤😍🥰
Hello, great and interesting video! The only solid colour I have done is the pink krypt - I did it last month - I absolutely loved it! I also have the gradient. Not strictly a solid colour puzzle, but I also recently purchased an Impuzzible called “Dozens of Roses” - it’s just loads of RED roses. I’m a bit daunted by that one, but can’t wait to try it at the same time - I bought two to do for Valentines, but I think I’ll do the Candy Hearts Impuzzible instead 😍 other solid colours on my wish list are the other krypts, particularly the gold and there is now a blue one I believe - it has the same cut as black I think.
I did the pink Krypt and LOVED it. I’d never been interested in a solid puzzle before, but the unique cute made it really interesting. I’d love to do more of the Krypts now. No red puzzles please!
I definitely want to get the whole kript series. The shapes are just so fun! The black took me about 21 hours to do, but I enjoyed the experience so much!
Im learning sooooooo much about puzzles. I think I’m going to jump in and buy my very first puzzle and have fun
the bits a pieces puzzle catalog page you showed, straw in a needle stack is at a local thrift shop for like $2.
Your enthusiasm is super wholesome. :)
I would pick the purple one because that's my favorite colour!! And it's so bright and perfect!
Thank you for the upload Karen. I haven't done a solid puzzle but I would like to accomplish one (a Red one)
Recently bought a 3000 piece puzzle because of you😊 its so relaxing do while listening to an audio book
I wish I could share a picture of the art I did with the solid silver puzzle.
I put it together then separated the pieces a little from each other and glued to a background matching the color of another wall at the house. I loved it!
I feel like I would be totally overwhelmed by a solid colour puzzle, so I don't see myself doing one. I think it's really interesting that you have such a big collection of them, since I cannot see the appeal myself lol! If I did have to choose one to do, I think I'd pick one from the Ravensburger Krypt line because of the more unique pieces. I've done the gradient one, though, which I loved of course!
I obviously did the Red Menace round puzzle, the Purple Passion puzzle and the Beatles one (both sides). I have a small silver puzzle that you can actually make inside it's box, and just did the Ravensburger silver Krypt. Would like to get the gold and gradient Krypts.
Lol PS: I love your videos.....I'm not as obsessed with puzzles as you are but I do love puzzles [: I've been blessed to be able to see your accomplishments. Thanks so very much for sharing your love and passion for puzzling. Keep up the great work and thank you again for being a great inspiration! ♡
The ravensburger krypt pink puzzle is the first one I did this year.
Omg APC was located in Watertown, MA?!? That’s where I live! Cool to know some puzzling history took place here. ^_^
I ordered the pink ravensburger krypt puzzle after seeing this video 😄 I already have the black one
I just finished the silver Krypt puzzle. I enjoyed it.
Awesome collection you have started, I always want to jump up and work on my puzzles after watching your videos! oh and "red"
While watching your videos has certainly made me up my puzzle game, I've never done a solid colour one. Ravensburger has become my favourite puzzle company atm, but those Krypt ones seem really daunting. However, that pink looks like a pretty colour, so I may have to give it a try. It would have been better if it was purple since that's my favourite colour, but at least they didn't pile onto the red bandwagon! 🤣
I haven't done a solid - I did do a puzzle of puzzle pieces. I have also done a gradient one - I love them now!! No solid RED for me though.
After I saw your video on the silver Krypt puzzle I found the pink (not "red" ;-) ) one and got it. I was my first solid colored puzzle and so much fun to do.
Now I am working on two puzzles I got for Christmas that are black and white city maps and they are soooooo much harder
I am so excited for this video 🌈
I would try one of those magic eraser type sponges, get it just a little bit damp to clean the gunk off that puzzle. They work great on stuff like that and wont scuff it.
I’ve never mailed anything before but I mentioned before that I have the completed red spilled paint puzzle that I could get rid of.
Can you send me an email? karenkavettpuzzles (at gmail)
@@KarenPuzzles just sent it and some close-ups of the pieces as well
There might be an audience for restoration techniques as well as vintage/classic puzzles. I bet others see red trying to figure out how to restore old puzzles/packages for their collections. Fun episode! You're always entertaining and bring little known but interesting facts. Thank you.
I have never done a real solid puzzle before, but when I was younger I would take my 500 piece puzzles and do them upside-down :) Mostly grey, grey green, or blue cardboard... would have been cool to have one that was RED ;)
My mum used to do that, with anything up to 1000 pieces. I'm quite sure she was crazy😂
What an interesting video. Amazing research skills. Always fun to watch. I’ve never done a solid puzzle. After watching you do the RED ketchup one I’m thinking maybe never. Lol.
Fun fact re the text on the green puzzle - "Casse-tête" is a somewhat dated French term for a puzzle. (Most people now simply say "Une puzzle".) Casse-tête literally translates as "head-breaker". :)
So here's a little tidbit. Those bags of pieces were sealed using a bag taper, which you can still get today. I used one at my very first job, sealing little bags that contained a specific amount of prizes to be sent to school carnivals with the carnival games.
I found a “red menace” puzzle at the thrift store for $2.50, it also had a Polaroid of it completed with the date “4/1/81” on the back
I'm impressed you still have the red Heinz one. I probably would have used it as kindling!!! Personally I have no desire to work on a solid color puzzle. They are not interesting to me. Part of what I love about working on puzzles is the emerging image. However I do enjoy watching others work on them! Thanks for the video!!
Not really interested in doing a lot of solid color puzzles but I have the pink krypt puzzle on my list since last year. Love your collection though!
I’m old enough to remember those pocket pal combs!
Well, at least they didn't call it "The Yellow Menace"....oof. Solid color puzzles aren't really my thing, but I loved Buffalo's "Greatest Jigsaw Puzzle of all Time" series. They were three puzzles where all of the pieces are the same shape and each piece has a another square piece in the middle. I think you'd have fun with those.
I’ve used denatured alcohol to clean books in similar condition to that puzzle. It evaporates quickly so it doesn’t damage cardboard, paper or, card stock from my experience
I wouldn't mind doing a whimsy-cut solid red puzzle but not a traditionally cut one. I seem to have made whimsy-cut wooden puzzles my thing. I'm very pleased though, because I just put in my cart one of those puzzle-keeper boards! My mom and her kitty live with me at the moment, and jigsaw puzzles that can't be done in one sitting are not really a good idea with a cat (or probably a dog, either). That has limited me to doing moderate-sized puzzles so far. But with a puzzle keeper, I'm planning to tackle the 700 pieces Unidragon puzzle called "Overarching Opposites" since I'll be able to close it up and keep it safe overnight.
I'd love to see you do one of the Unidragon puzzles, actually -- they are seriously beautiful and the quality is incredible. I had been a big fan of Liberty and Nautilus and have been really surprised to find myself zeroing in on Unidragon more and more lately. Their cuts are so clean and crisp and the art so beautiful that when the puzzle is completed, you literally can't tell it's a puzzle without getting up close.
The Red Puzzle at the end was such a cool recommendation.
Regarding the Ravensburger Krypt, there's also a mint metallic solid color one.
The Springbok Collection is just ✨ U N R E A L ✨
Only single colour puzzle I remember doing was the red "one tough puzzle" in the 1980s, and you have featured that on another vid.
