But, would she have seen a Hindu God instead, if she were a Hindu? The ritual was for a guardian Angel, and the movie was quite clear that a guardian angel is not a projection of your higher self,/Super Ego. Wouldn't the ritual for a demigod be for exactly that?
Yes, are dealing with a power force and resolve it within the archetypal encapsulation expected. For her a powerful angel. For me, Lucifer. Others, Kali, Virgin Mary, Cthulhu etc...
They way yoir explaining it sounds awful luciferian. Isnt this more esoteric than that? I mean ive always assumed the "highe self" form of luciferianism to me sounds more like a projection of your mind and the powers unlocked in it. Qhere as the abremellin seems to be used to actually call forth real entitys and more specifically demons and actual gurdian angels being invoked like the pentagram ritual , key of Solomon ln kind of stuff?
Crowley probably wrote more on the Angel than anyone and his opinion varied depending on who he was talking to, what model would aid them, and his own understanding of the Angel at the various times he wrote about it. Sometimes it was the higher self, other times it was a definite separate being and in his last writings he wrote the higher self was a 'dangerous delusion and damnable heresy'.
He definitely gave hints that it is not either/or. It is beyond both self and separate beings. His nature in the Abramelin ritual is described as invariably solar in essence. Later on as one relationship deepens with the Angel it is testified to that He reveals both more of His nature and more of your nature.
He could be seen as the non-self, the silence and much more paradoxical terms. Models are the only thing that's useful here rather than saying *what* He is. He can be seen as thus in such and such situation and thus in another situation.
He certainly and unequivocally APPEARS as separate with a desire for union with His human.
Orson Rider Crowley wasn’t the one who came up with the ritual and never even finished it. This is a specific kind of magic concerning angels and demons and they will present themselves however they appear I guess, but if you were to do the ritual you would be doing it within the confines of that set of magical law and if you are trying to summon angels and demons they are going to be angels and demons not whatever you want them to be.

It is a beautiful film, because within the process of this ritual they both change, for the better. He learns what's really important to him, his sister. And she learns to forgive. Its one of my favourite films.

I lik3 that analysis, but at the same time the price of that (more for the man the protagonist) was yhe mans mortality and the failure of total enlightenment in the mortal cpil at leastn and her price was accepting that her intentions were selfish and she experianced further loss of her intentions. Witch actully alowed her to mourn and transcend into a real relationship with the higher self and the divine.

This was such a good movie about ritual magick, I watched it when you recommended it on your other channel. Its emotionally gripping, from when you learn of her child's death to when her hatred and desire for vengeance is transformed into pleas for help in forgiving... that scene with the angel brought tears to my eyes it was beautiful. Very well done, wish more depictions of ritual magick were more like this, because this is what ita really about.
That scene where he whacked it , to her bare butt ,brought sorta tears , to my One-Eyed Yogurt launcher .
The final scene gave me chills. My hair stood up. Absolutely beautiful.

The story of wisdom's (Sophia's) journey.
SHE is guided by the pattern (Paternal) to the place of her best readiness.
When HE discovers her impending doom he kills her and brings her back reborn.
She in return kills him and the outgrown pattern is destroyed.
Through the pains of childbirth a new child is born to Sophia to replace the loss of the former.
The spell is broken, forgiveness is obtained and wisdom's heart is healed.

Watched it three times, and discovered something new each time. It's a really good movie.
Once again, this is a brilliant video. We usually just get mentally insane Christians screaming about Witches and Demons, but now we have an actual Occultist who knows what the fuck he's talking about giving us an intelligent lecture.

This brilliant film made my top ten instantly. Nice to see the occult not being demonized by the liars. One point though, I found the characters names telling as well: Sophia/wisdom and Solomon/brutal law. Great video!
I've only just watched this film and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It occurred to me that Solomon was going to ask for invisibility as his favour from the angel, though not actual invisibility but to just disappear from the world and, by implication, find peace. By the end of the film that is exactly what he got, he has left the world and, submerged in the water, he is finally at peace. In a way it mirrors Amfortas and his wound. Like Amfortas he suffers a wound that would not heal and only found relief from the pain by bathing in a lake.
Like what I said on the previous analysis of Hereditary. Some films just come to you when you really need them. Thanks for recommending this movie, I resonated with it pretty hard.
I think the masturbation scene was meant to show his commitment. He knew he was seeing her in a sexual light and needed to purge that so he does it in the fastest way.
What people also miss is that he killed her. She killed him he drowned her she drowned him.
i thought the forgiveness for for herself for leaving the child for too long before he was kidnapped. This haunted her, it was the underlying subconscious reason she wanted to do the ritual

I loved the movie as an occultist and as a film fan. It didn't make the magic out to be this silly hocus pocus fantasy stuff but it also didn't try to force you into it, it just said this is what is going on and this is how it works and this is a movie. It was never "this is the way" or "this stuff is bad", it was more like "this is a story". It was nice to see a movie that showed us a magic world without going into the "satanic panic" mindset or trying to justify the work to the audience. When an non-occultists asks me to recommend an occult movie I always recommend A Dark Song. I feel like it can get them acquainted with some occult concepts while still telling a great story at the same time. This must be what people felt like when Passion of The Christ came out.

There were five main characters, six including the guardian angel and eighteen in total, including the demons. The story focuses on Sophia and Joseph, true, but those tertiary characters are there for good reason.
This is an overlooked classic. It's honest, brutal, and beautiful.

Watched last winter on Thomas’s recommendation, fantastic movie, Catherine is stunning, great review.
It is mentioned though no detail given that, her son died as result of some young kids "messing around with the occult". I would also recommend people watch "Aleister Crowley The Other Loch Ness Monster" it's on youtube. Not only does Neal Oram appear in it, it really gives you a clue as to who/what the voice and the dog are in this film. I'd also mention that, the "child's voice" is defo a dig at "The Devil Rides Out" as it reprises a classic scene in that film. A deeply profound and enjoyable film that actually understands esoteric traditions.

beautiful film..though the Abramelin is 18 month,no blood ingested and no chinese symbolism. Loved the film as it showed the arduous dedication required to purify, that performing magick changes the person internally, her breakthough to peace for herself, and the HGA. Beautifully done.

I LOVE this film! It has the most satisfying ending ever! I think its a masterpiece.
I liked the movie a lot but not the ending. The movie nicely built up the tension and story line. The intense rituals gave the plot substance and the movie began to get creepier and scarier as it progressed. I was hoping for a really scary and intense ending but it petered out in the form of a Sunday school lessen " it's better to forgive". As Gladiator would ask "are you not entertained" I would answer "No" at least not at the end. When I watch a horror movie I don't want an ethics lesson, I want to need to change my underwear.

This film isn't a normal horror film, of which we are inundated. It's a story of its own kind.
This is not a horror film, I would say is more of a spiritual film if there is such a genre.
I think the movie was a masterful occult masterpiece up until the very end. The abrahamic connotations put me off. As far as I’m concerned the beings referred to as
“angels” in the occult not only predate Christianity but are something beyond comprehension. The ending seemed to appease certain Christian values and it put me off. But up until that moment this was a true masterpiece in every sense of the word.
Would you ever analyze The Witch A New England Folktale? It came out in 2015.

It was a nice slow burn movie. You had to have the build up to appreciate the third act... plus the coincidences make you unsure if things are working.
Would have never gotten make in Hollywood. Dr Sledge from Esoterica suggested the movie, as a film snob I liked it. You can tell where the budget went in this film and they did freaking awesome. They used a mistranslated version but they did get a whole bunch of things right. The focus was on the story instead of fluff (Ireland outclassed Hollywood by a few light years).

The Archangel is played by Martina Nunvarova, so portrayed as feminine. Quite interesting.
Yeah since it's most frequently encountered as masculine by both sexes. But not universally. Some do see it as female, but the power, potency and solar nature is universally reported.

I never really imagined Angels as purely Judeo-Christian entities. Angels are actually very Pagan beings that come from ancient Semetic folklore. They were originally Celestial Spirits who served Mithra the Persian God of the Sun.
Yes and no... Lugh, Atun, Helios it really doesn't matter. If everyone had amnesia tomorrow paganism would be back in a week or twos time. It's the natural state of humankind. I'm not trying to homogenise everything ( that's the new age perspective) Seelie/Unseelie, angels/demons, it's the up asension vs. the (illusion of) down regression. But it's all about the center, creating sacred spaces for yourself.. I don't remember where I was going with that, doesn't Thomas have a great channel 🤫
They are definitely derived from Classical Paganism, and the archetype is universal. It is just that in the movie the angel is portrayed in the artistic style that you see on stained glass windows on old English ecclesiastical buildings. I loved the way its enormity was shown, but also its kindness. It kneels towards her in a loving way.

Seeing all this analysis of occult in fiction for many movies. Yet no one has looked into it in anime. Other than somw crazy Christians.
It seems to me that there is a loy of great literature and graphic novels coming out of Japan.
They're curious about the West and reflect back our philosophy and culture from their perspective.
It's very interesting amd I'm sure they've gor some valuable occult knowledge.

A lot are like graphic novels made into cartoons.
They have tje revival of archetypes.
Ideas from Japanese mythology and religion.
Philosophy some of it western philosophy as many of these Japanese show writers are well read

An excellent movie with a beautiful ending
I loved this film. Loved the actors. They were so plausible. The frustrating behaviour of the female character's goalpost shifting was very convincing to the point of being maddening, and you kind of had two actors playing two separate states of consciousness which must have been very tricky. But what a great film.
My top 5 ever horror film its done so well its a story of forgiveness and sacrifice!!! ❤

Excellent review! Most of them on here are garbage, but this is so well communicated and in depth.
A truly amazing music movie and definitely someone accurate. There are some parts left out of the actual ritual in this movie I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. But nevertheless the message definitely has a full impact. An extremely unique and rare film to watch.
She set him up from the beginning. He killed her son. She knew it which is why she lied about the favor she wanted at the beginning. He figured it out by seeing the photo of her son and was going to kill her with another fake ritual but felt guilt and revived her. In bed he was about to admit to killing her son and apologize. She was mocking him by asking if God was there now. She knew he was going to hell. The occult knew her true goal and tortured him to death. Then she was free to ask for the power to forgive.

Been thinking about the idea of demons smd gods being psychological complexes.
I know we're living in modern times and so we project our thinking onto tje universe updating djin to space aliens etc.
But there is the idea that we're living in a simulation.
I don't believe this but I do think reality is analogous to a computer programme.
In much the same way we project our modern understanding of reality onto things like djin.
So we do thw same with things likw starting to see the universe like a computer game.
This is because we play games and that changes the way reality is perceived.
Anyhow summoning a demon/ god is like downloading a code or a programme.
At least if we're talking about archetypal energies and not entities.
These things do really need to be categorised

I think they're both personally - the key is how much human consciousness interacts with or IS reality - if I perform rituals, I feel and see an effect. Does that mean it's my imagination? Quite possibly. But who can say for sure that imagination isn't part of the fabric of reality?
The demons were representation of her past not actual demons..... They didn't take bolt cutters to her finger. She took bolt cutters to her own finger..... Do you think in the demonic realm? They just keep bolt cutters lying around? A lot of people really missed what's going on in this film
What else is in the pond? Other than the subprimordial Cthulu nature? Excalibur, maybe, pointing to Avalon-Laputa? Through the mists of Tír na nÓg? Iram of the Pillars? Beneath that, in the 'Waters Beneath The Earth', Kitezh? Shambhala? Agharta? Atlantis? The 'reaction' happens in the 'laboratory'. Ceremony seems to have it's etymology in the root 'creo', or 'to create'. Never tell of your workings, until they are complete in an acheiropoiesis, and then only with 'mental reservation' or veiled language is advised, because people will think you are nuts anyway, but plus, worse, it's disrespectful and could screw up your workings, if they are ongoing/oncoming enchantments. But worst still, it will dishonor the gods- that is, the thought-forms/egregores, spirits, etc, you are working with. Risky. Take caution, because things can happen. I've seen things whisk around me before, working on a bunch of stuff, and so, I warn, take care. It can probably be worse than that- much worse, I suspect. Caution, always.

Great film ! So intense. Very insightful into the world of magic and human nature.
If you go through a big catharsis, you’ve had to accept some damage getting there. But after, you see that it was how the magic got through to you.
I loved this film too and saw the same elements in it as pro-occult and it is so well done for a first film but what is this weird thing in some people who have seen it - in this case a friend- who just dismissed it saying it wasn't scary at all. Like no impact. I think some will just not get what this film is about at all. It either goes over their heads completely, or they dissociate and see only the 3D elements in it to protect themselves from the arduous spiritual process it represents. A kind of bypassing, or ignorance?
I found the film both beautiful and cathartic....forgiveness of a different sort..

Uh the occult the occult is everywhere in the USA just like most most western counties and the creators of hereditary did not have to make the occult appear as villain's, the occult naturally do a pretty good job of that all on their own.
That's a pretty broad (and unfair) generalisation, the "occult" doesn't have to be used for nefarious purposes, quite the opposite for the vast majority of occultists!
The only flaw is, if the occultist wanted his wish couldn't he just cast the invocation himself? What does he need her for.
Because he's done it 2 times already - so he's spent 3 years of his life doing the same ritual. I also imagine he can't perform the ritual and coach at the same time

This is one of my favorite movies. I appreciate your description of the magic used but it’s not accurate. This movie is based on the book of a abramelin, a Jewish ritual. There are no salt rings around the house. It’s an 18 month ritual invoking your guardian angel and then binding the demons of hell. They purposefully did not include aspects of the ritual into the movie for fear of invoking the demons. Also, the magic will not work if you claim Lucifer as your friend. The book strongly states you can only love God and all the ritual is based on your love of God. The ritual will absolutely not work if you claim live for any other deity than God. Abraham states in the book he saw what happens to people that do magic without the love of God, they have very bad things happen to them. He also states when you are binding the demons , they will try to trick you, hence not doing the ritual correctly.
i thought solomon was just the other half of her. the film to me was her fighting her self for believing she killed her child and that was respresented as solomon etc. thats why she seen the dead dog and he talks about the dead dog and he says they are the same etc. she forgives herself in the end and lets solomon go.
It's made extremely clear that everything happening, was actually happening though.

This is an excellent movie, personally the ending was a bit Hollywood feel good for me but that's simply opinion. The Sofia and gnosis connection is interesting,, and forgiveness is a beautiful thing. That being said forgiveness is not always the best course of action and it can be a waste of an opportunity. I will give you a simple example of this in my personal life. A couple of decades ago I was gang raped. There was no Justice nor did I knowingly see these people again. I could not pursue any avenues of Justice because the country I live in does not support women in that way,, also these are very dangerous people. So I pushed it out of my mind and carried on with life. Of course it came up later with a vengeance from my subconscious, this was a difficult time. I tried forgiveness, and I thought it worked....for awhile; but I was still not at rest nor did I feel good about any of it. So I did some ritual activity and soul-searching and I figured out a way. I use the criminals in question during rituals, and trust me they are very very useful. This is proving to be a most productive and effective way of taking what I had been dealt in life and using it as a resource.

Because you have no idea what the Abra Melin is you have no point of reference. I completed the Abra Melin sequence 35yrs ago when I was 22. It is an intense and hard worked for ritual which brings the promised results, though in no way you could imagine. This film is an approximation of the ritual and quite beautifully done, though only a gentle kiss to the reality. Quite why you have to emphasise the Irish film connection is beyond me. It matters not who filmed it, only that it educates. You're Irish, so what... ? If you choose to do the Abramelin be aware it is not a game, nor something you can pick up and drop. And once you engage the sequence you are changed forever. As am I. Very few of us have completed the sequence, I know only of two other than myself that I have met. It changes you...and I find your narrative naive and wannabee at best. If you would like to undertake the working, give me a shout, I will guide you... Be careful what you choose to engage with, sometimes when you do, it ceases to be in your hands...
I wonder if it's all just based on the human imagination. Period. Angels, demons... One could conceivably conjure up Darth Vader as easily as Satan.

Ok. I just need to mention one thing. The main reason I want to do so is because,
A - The video says there is no clear answer to what happened to her son and B - I cannot find any info about what I want to mention anywhere, at all.
Here we go - Sophia herself killed her son. He wasnt killed by occultists like she claimed. I would take you to the scene where she sees a figure smoking in the chair.
I like to take in as much as I can when I watch films and always wear headphones when I watch them alone. So I rewound that scene and turned the volume up as I was sure I heard the figure talking.
What I can gather he says as follows -
"She's a murderer.............Killed her own son..........Didn't pick him up...........murderer!...........all that matters is what she want(s)..........[I cant make out this next bit because it's as she stands up].........She killed him............killed your own son..........come closer..........[music gets int he way here but he either says 'close' or 'hello'............[music still in the way but sounds like 'from god']"
I believe her son was kidnapped from like park or a beach or something and she hadn’t been paying attention and she blames herself and thinks she killed him
I am pretty sure she was with a man and didn’t pick her son up when she was supposed to do some teens took him and did some kind of “satanic” ritual with him. You have to pay attention because the details are given at various points in the movie. She tells Solomon what happened to her son, and then when her son starts to talk to her he asks her if she was with that man and why didn’t she pick him up.
She felt responsible for his death because she didn't pick him up on time. This is told through different parts of the movie. He was actually kidnapped as a result. Even though the smoking man in the chair is saying this, it's meant to be a representation of herself, her own thoughts of herself.

Quite possibly - knowledge and conversation with the HGA doesn't even have to happen due to ritual, it can happen in anything that involves intense and deep focus for an extended period - people have reported k&c with the HGA solely through meditation, for instance

Rather than film, I have a question for you regarding a band I’ve recently started almost obsessively listening to by the name of Sleep Token, who have shown some intriguing approaches to performance and what I suppose you would call marketing (which can be looked into with a simple Google of the band name). My primary interest, however, is in their use of sigils. Every track that was to be released on their first LP ‘Sundowning’ was made available separately as a single of sorts, but accompanied by a unique sigil. Having heard you speak on the power of sigils (someone preparing one, attaching it to his rifle, and charging it by using the weapon in battle comes to mind specifically), I’m intrigued to know what your thoughts were on this particular approach. Amazing movie and an excellent analysis though Thomas many thanks for popping it on Pussbook or I wouldn't have given it a watch. This one will haunt my dreams for a wee while to come I think.
The demons were a bit naff. A bunch of oaps with mud smeared over them is disturbing. But more from disgust than a sense of horror.
why did the angel at the end look like a giant soldier? he didn't even speak. he kneeled down as if he were facing a queen. weird.
Saint Michael in Golden Dawn magic appears as a soldier. He is bending down to talk to her.

It was not a particularly accurate portrayal of the operation of the rite of Abramelin The Mage. It had many inaccuracies and differences
true...for dramatic purposes however, it was necessary...1 and a half hrs depicting a single person starring into the void for 6 months plus does not an entertaining movie make...

The director spoke on a podcast and said the ritual part wasn’t the actual abramelin ritual as he respected the ritual and didn’t want any demons invoked. He said he just threw in all sorts of things that had no magical properties.
The psychological/jungian model..archetypes etc is too narrow to explain much of the occult.

there was no prelude at the start of this film about abramelin or this being an actual ritual. were the censors worried about public safety

I found the ending of the movie to be quite satisfying..I was shocked to see that the film actually "payed off"..i.e. we get to see the angel...and her request is dare I say "christian"?.....
why does every esoteric film contain a woman named sophia? that's very gnostic and too obvious.
