Heading to Argentina for 12 days in November! My Spanish tutor from BA was explaining the blue dollar to me recently and now I feel like a pro heading to my trip! Thanks for the great video explaining :)
IMPORTANT... You can use your credit card. Please! Check this info - this is very recent. There has been a change and the credit card bank exchange is the same as the Blue Dolar. Buen viaje!
Thank you for the video. Does it work the other way around ? For example, once I have converted to Pesos , can I double my dollars if exchange from Pesos back to dollars ? Thank you for your assistance. I'm officially subscribed , thank you for keeping it simple.
Take new (blue) hundred dollar bills for best rates. There are even people who will go to you to do the exchange, for a small fee. Just ask around for “cueva a domicilio”. Cueva is what people say to refer to black market money exchange.
Very helpful video! Does that mean that you would avoid paying by card hotels/ tours? How did you manage this as I see many hotels and tour agencies ask for credit card payment to reserve bookings?
Thanks for the tips, I am going to visit Buenos Aires, Puerto Madryn, El Calafate, El Chalten, and Ushuaia, I wonder if I can find Wester Union in all the major cities?
That's amazing! You're going to have a great time! We found Western Union in all of those places EXCEPT El Calafate and El Chaltén, so make sure to withdrawal enough beforehand. You can also log into the Western Union app and check all of their locations before you go. Enjoy your trip 😊
@@HobartsAbroad thank you very much , I guess it’s better for me to get the money issue done in BA then. I normally don’t like to bring too much cash with me , it seems that I have to do it in Argentina this time .
i would not do western unions ..they collect info about you via PASSPORT info and notify IRS ...if transaction is over $500 /// best option is " cambio-person " for changing ...as of tonight the rate is 300 for 1 ....hahaha the argentina finance minister just quit !!!
I did this successfully once via the app, but then when I went to do it twice, the app wont let me do it. I get an error that I can't use this payment method.
Thank you for this great video!! If I'm sending the money to myself what address do I put down as my address because as the receiver it says I have to put an address down. (Do i just put down my hotel address?)
Thanks for the info. I'm planning to Buenos Aires next month. As far as hotel reservations am I better off making reservations here or using cash once I get there?
Besides the possibilities of counterfeit peso on Florida Street; is it safe to deal with the "Cambio"?? They most likely take you inside a building. Thanks.
Welcome. Can I, while I am in the country of Chile, go to Western Union in Chile and ask them to transfer an amount of money from the US dollar to the Argentine peso at the same black market rate in the country of Argentina, because I know that Chile deals in the Argentine peso also inside the banks in Chile? Please advise
I am going to visit Argentina. Can I send money from that country to my home country? How much is it? I mean can I send (ars peso) to my home country by western union or other alternative.
All the time! Especially right now - in less than a week, prices doubled. 1 kg (2 lbs) bananas which used to be 750 pesos back in November, are (as of 2023-12-19) between 1650 and 2000 pesos. How come!? Argentina got a new prez - Javier Milei. Ignoramus voted him in. He's supposedly a Ph.D. in economics. If you catch him at the wrong moment, he speaks and acts... very funnily. The right-wing (failed monetarist ideas) that people that financed his electoral campaign put in his head were to liberalize the exchange, the prices, everything… before cutting taxes in a country that is debt-ridden and has low credit already. Basically the very same move that got the British pound below the parity threshold with the US$ for the first time in history, under the short term premiership of Liz Truss, a.k.a. the Pound-Wrecker. Go figure. Secondly, take under government responsibility and take on corporate debt. Which makes a lot of sense - to some - especially if you had previously borrowed a large amount in pesos and invested (not talking about regular people here) and now you can pay back in low value and depreciating currency. Or you want to give yourself a break & stop paying, because - man, you can afford, but the government takes over your debt. Anyways, the only hurt are the 99% of the people at the bottom of the pay-scale. Last elections, people voted him in - in a much trumpist manner, he had told them he's going to sort out EVERYTHING, fast..! Dec 10th, 2023, he gets the job, less than a week later Milei + Luis Caputo make the first moves. (Caputo is known for being the smartass who contracted 44 billion USD in debt from IMF under the previous right of the center administration (between 2015-2019) in order to be able to finance the government, after he cut or eliminated the taxes on the top earners and the rich. That also afforded the IMF the chance to go ask for their money back and ask for the peso to be devalued during the 4 years of the previous administration (2019-2023). Epilogue. Just installed, the new prez + the new minister of Economy, take the decision to crash the currency. They gladly let everyone know the value of the peso was artificial until a few days ago, so they had to devaluate by decree. Thanks to that, the prices doubled everywhere. And went up 2-3-400%, at the extreme.
The inflation rate is 75% Pick-pockets are everywhere. Never carry your passport with you! Any cash & credit cards must be kept under your shirt, in a pouch around your neck. If you step onto any form of public transport; busses, subways, or trains, you will be accosted by several thieves at once. Strange hands will be in every pocket, in every nook, and cranny. Hands will go down your pants, and up your shirt. Wear you valuables under your shirt, and have a belt tightly fixed below that pouch. Only by reaching down the neck of your shirt will access your money, that way. Taxi drivers cannot be trusted: They will pretend that you have them a much smaller banknote than you actually did! Carefully hand them the notes, and say the amount! Stealing is part of Argentine culture!
Thank you for this video, it was very helpful! Just a quick question, in the Western Union app, when select : sending money to Argentina, later they ask about the receiver information. In that case, the country of the receiver (which is me) is it Argentina or in my case, Canada? Seems that I don't have the option to choose which country. Thank you so much in advance!:)
Great video and fully understand, my issue is I watched a couple go to collect there money and apparently you have to have an Argentinan SIM card to collect money ? Is this true because otherwise I personally will go to Florida street thanks
Definitely not! You just have to make sure you set up your Western Union ID account correctly (with your own citizenship and documentation) and when you create the transfer and need to choose the person who will pick up, just match the name as it is exactly in your passport. That's it. You can/should pick it up with a passport so you don't need to be Argentinian. We've both done it with Brazilian and US passports and we saw many foreigners do the same. Best wishes!
Hi. Many thanks for your very helpful video. I am planning a trip there soon and I intend to visit iguazu falls. I see that the hotel is quoting room rate at R$170pn. Is this in US$ or Peso? It can not be peso considering current exchange rate is 230 peso to a dollar.
I think it depends on the locations of the WU, Go to Palermo or other safe area and always be aware of your surroundings , I would say 300 or 400 usd. the fee is not too much. If you have someone is the states who can go to a store its cheaper than doing it online . ussually half the price , so is not that bad . around 8usd for 300 or 400 usd
Cant u just exchange it for blue dollar value in the states before going to argen?? If u dont mind carrying money (to avoid the w.union in argent lines and money running out)
No. In the states it will be the official government rate of Argentina. When in Argentina you must exchange it on the black market or at Western Union. They value the US dollar because their currency is constantly loosing value
That’s the main misunderstanding. You don’t get double amount. You have to live as a foreigner in Argentina for a couple of months for example to understand it. You are not saving money with dollar blue. It’s just the real value of your dollars. Do you think in a country with such an inflation a cheeseburger costs 20 dollars ? No..
Visa pays the blue dollar rate. Mastercard doesn't. We just finished with my two-week holiday in Argentina: BA, Ushuaia, El Calafate, and back to BA. We were informed by our tour guide for the Recoleta Cemetary that Visa pays the blue dollar rate. We had to pay by card to enter the Recoleta Cemetary as they don't accept cash. I used my Visa card and discovered that I was only charged GBP 4.74 entrance fee to the Recoleta Cemetery. I then started to use my Visa card and discovered that I was getting an exchange rate of AR$340 to 1 US$. Which is not too different from the current blue rate of AR$380 to 1 US$. We found lots of vegan restaurants and most other restaurants have at least a vegetarian option. We did not starve during our Argentine holiday!
Hi, heading to BA for a week in September. I usually use the Currensea travel card abroad but with pesos it uses the Mastercard rate. What would be your advice? Bring dollars with me on my trip to change over there, use a Visa card or anything else. Appreciate any advice.
Hi, is it better to go to Western Union if we arrive in Salta? Will it be cheaper than going to an ATM ? Cause we won’t be in Buenos Aires till like the second or third week of our trip…
@@ronaldrodriguez5144 So the advertised price of hotels and apartments is sometimes listed in US dollars. Does that mean if I exchange my US cash for blue dollars it's essentially half the price listed on these websites for my living accommodations?
You can only bring so much cash with you into the country. Once you run out of Dollars, or Euros, you are dependent upon ATM machines, which give you about half what your Dollars are worth!
Somehow the western union app doesn't allow me to transfer money to a western union Station, always asking me to transfer money to a specific person in argentina. Could you please elaborate more on the transfer?
Thanks for this explanation. How different is the blue dollar rate than the exchange rate you’d get at a bank in Argentinian cities? Wouldn’t the bank want USD as well, and be willing to give the blue dollar rate, too? I was thinking of getting a debit card that has no international fees like Charles Schwab account, and withdrawing as I need. That way no need to wait in western union lines, no need to bring tons of cash, and no worries about counterfeit money.

could i go in to argentina with 500k euro cash in large bills, exchange it at the black market for double the official rate, deposit it at an argentinian bank and exchange it back to euro at the official rate by wire transfer to germany?
No, you pick it up in the local currency (Argentine pesos). Florida Street is when you already have your US dollars (or Euros) and want to trade it for Argentine pesos.
