I owned Fat Tuesday's in the early 80's, and I'm the one who brought Les out of retirement in 1984. Wayne Wright used to come into Fat Tuesday's all the time, and he told me he was friends with Les, and that Les was interested in playing again. At first, I was interested but wary, and then just wary as nothing ever happened. Then one busy Saturday night, in between sets for Dizzy Gillespie, in walked Wayne Wright and Les. He was wearing a Sears winter coat and an Elmer Fudd hat, and he looked around the club, looks at me, and said, "I'll do it." That was it. He liked my face, he said, and he liked the mirrors on the walls and low ceilings. No contracts, just a handshake. The original deal was for two Monday nights, but he loved it so much he did it every Monday somewhere in NYC until right before he died. For his 69th birthday, I hired a stripped to walk on stage in the middle of a set to surprise him. People used to walk on stage occasionally to shake his hand, or for some other odd reason, so he thought it was a just a friendly fan. Until she started taking her clothes off. He pulled his birthday card out of her g-string with his mouth, and then for weeks after kept pretending he still had one of her pubic hairs stuck in her teeth. He'd ask me for a toothpick from the stage, and then that started the whole thing. Man, he was funny. And really eccentric.
Back then in my youth, I didn't have a whole lot of money, but when I had a few extra bucks to treat myself (and maybe a date), one of the places I, as a jazz lover, particularly of guitar, would travel to from my home on Long Island was Fat Tuesdays in Manhattan, where I got to hear Les, and, Joe Pass a couple of times, and maybe one time, Tal Farlow. It was a tiny below ground level venue but such a venue! I don't think the worst seats were even 10 spots from the stage. Wow!
He had her pubic hair stuck in his teeth because he is a man. A man like me whose apex in living is coming out of my mums and attempting to go back in. Whether the imbecile modern whores realize those crack dealers are....i repeat.....are gay. And hate women and their bodies .....well.....its still to see.
Just when I think I've heard it all, I'm shocked awake, Les you sly old dog..... that was beautiful, (kudos to backup crew). Seriously great, moved to tears.
I First Met Les Paul at Fat Tuesday's in April 1990 Fat Tuesdays Was on 3rd Ave at 17th I Believe. I've seen Les with Some Great Talent Since Then, The Last Being at The Iridium 51st and Broadway. I Miss Him and Love Him So Very Much. He Was So Nice To Us and Had Shared Some Great Stories. It's a bit hard to see some of these old Monday Night Clips... So Let Me Delve Right In! Thank's for the Post.
I've always listened to and liked this song when played by Emmanuel, Clapton, Beck, and others. However, this one has 'soul' like no one else. "If you get goosebumps when listening to the music, it has captured your soul". How can someone ever begin play the guitar like this man has always been able to do? Simply marvelous. Hey kids, if you learn to play this song, like this man, you might begin to know what 'soul' really is! Maybe, just maybe, someday they will name a guitar after you.
A truly incredible song played by a legendary guitarist. The greats of the 1960-2000's followed in this mans foot steps. They were probably playing the guitar named for him as well.
stay blazed Hendrix? no one better? mate, think long and hard about that, or maybe check out the world, Hendrix is awesome yes, but no where near the best
There's no way to point who's the best like that, things don't work so objectively. Hendrix, Les Paul, Chet, Page and everyone else is good in their own way.
***** I have a machine that plays both VHS and DVD so we're all set there. This was a great show needless to say. I think I wore out the tape. It starts out with a brief history of Les, and then the gig starts. Simply wonderful.
***** Yes, I've watched it here in pieces. I love Jeff Beck and I can copy his style on the guitar on a few key tunes. Next to Les, Jeff is unmatched in style and ability.
les paul tenia entre 5 y 6 años cuando escuchó a través de su ventana por en medio del vidrio un sonido cual si fuera producido con una aguja y así empezó su sonido y así empezó la magia de les paul
oh such mastership, he's such a clown too with the audience :D those pull-offs when he plays the theme on the high register are just diamond. So hard to learn on my LP guitar.
The man who launched a million guitarist he is the Godfather of electric guitar multitrack recording excetera excetera a musical genius him and his wife Mary Ford we're light years ahead of musical genius I love this man and all he stands for he is The Last of the Mohicans a man of great integrity.
Great memories! This video is from Les' time at Fat Tuesdays in NYC on 17th St.. Lou Pallo on rhythm and Gary Mazzaroppi on bass. Les allowed me to video him there many times, I still have all the VHS tapes, but this is by far better sounding and better camera angles and effects. The people moving in front of the camera are still a problem as they were for me. This sound has got to have passed Les' approval! Great memorial take of one of his faves as a cover! RIP to Ol' Rhubarb Red!
Hello, I was Les' personal engineer for all of these shows and also at both Iridium's. At Fat Tuesdays I worked with Les to make the show's sound as good as we could get them using a Toa Board which had a lot of problems at the time.

Must’ve been great to experience that, thanks for sharing
Great story ! God bless you for creating the vehicle for all this wonderful music to reach the world again.
Holy shit this story fucking rocks

During my visit in New York I saw Mr Les Paul in this bar in the 90s and I hold his hand!
One of my favorite parts of this video is the smile on Les's face at the end. The best version I've ever heard of this song.
Such an incredibly gifted man, have to pick up my Les Paul off the wall when I hear Les play (:-)
This is like watching a tree change colors in autumn - gentle in passing, and beautiful.
This so wonderful music i know ever since i was a child sounds too sad at my ears, but it leads me to very differents dimensions .I like it very much !

A truly incredible song played by a legendary guitarist. The greats of the 1960-2000's followed in this mans foot steps. They were probably playing the guitar named for him as well.
I remember when my dad got me into Les Paul. That was awesome. .
Let's all hope that when we're this old, we can still find our way down to a bar or club and play like this, and maybe on something we invented!
Those nights at Fat Tuesdays and the Iridium were certainly magical ! Hope some of you got to experience them. Really miss them !
Lovely tone. Great version. I'm a drummer and I've bookmarked this for brush practice.
Pure class!
Chet Atkins is "Mr. Guitar", and Les Paul is the "Godfather of Guitar". Someone may equal them, but no one could beat them, that would be impossible.
RUclips ECHO????
Jimi Hendrix deff could so can jimmy page I love les paul to but we gotta be serious no one is better on the guitar then Hendrix
stay blazed Hendrix? no one better? mate, think long and hard about that, or maybe check out the world, Hendrix is awesome yes, but no where near the best

He's a hero of guitar
Sensacional!
Tbh Tommy Emmanuel’s version is insane. Les was mesmerised watching him
Yes. Tommy packed in a lot. He uses songs. Les is not using this song. He’s letting the song come out.
