Good instructive video. For mr it has an uncentered, airy tone which seems to process the sonic drawbacks of both a Western concert flute and recorder (which of course some may like - for 'World Music' maybe?) Thanks for the effort.
There absolutely is, so long as you have some time and are ok with getting a little hands on. I made one for myself out of a length of PVC, a 45* elbow and a dowel rod. If you have a hand saw, some sand paper, a file, and some way to attach it to the body of the flute, it wouldn't cost you more than $20 and makes for a pretty fun craft project. If you're into that sort of thing, lol.

I did a very nice professional recording in the studio recently using this head joint and with a full jazz quartet. They folks at Fliphead are going to post it soon. Not sure I'll get around to an instructional video, but the best thing to do is experiment with some different blowing styles and techniques. I don't rest my teeth on it so I can kinda float around a bit with it in my mouth. Hope that helps a little.
you sound great on it, thanks for your presentation. Are you putting your teeth on top of the mouthpiece like on a sax embouchure or are you holding the mouthpiece with then lips only?
Thanks! It's really just the lips--like you blow into a recorder or Irish whistle. Even on the sax I try not to put much tooth pressure so I can 'float' on the mouthpiece as needed (kinda like Joe Lovano does when he goes for his low notes :)
It is the standard novo student flute. I'd recommend reaching out to Martin Educcimann. He makes a great fipple head joint for the Nuvo, as well as standard and kena ones as well! I saw that the nuvo flutes come with grease for the joints, just like plastic recorders. I'm guessing that you didn't put grease on the pipe of the fliphead. May I ask what you used to fit it and if you need to use grease to get it into the middle section of these plastic flutes?
Hi. The Nuvo flute is actually a fair bit wide at the mid-section, so I needed to put something around the fliphead to make it fit. I initially used saxophone neck cork, which worked fine, but when I would switch to try it on another flute I had to tear it off (so it became expensive :). I found that Gorilla tape wrapped around the fliphead (maybe about 4 inches of it or so) worked fine too. Once you have a good fit it plays perfectly. I think that the larger bore of the Nuvo flute actually allows me to put a bit more air thru it and feel confident that the note won't crack, which I appreciate! Hope that helps.

I'm still waiting for my fliphead to arrive, but I already was eyeballing those flutes since I've seen your video. Love the idea of an inexpensive, sturdy flute to bring along. www.fliphead.net and the Nuvo flute is widely distributed. It will require some cork to make it fit perfectly, since the Nuvo has a wider diameter fitting than standard

Thanks for checking it out. Hmmm, as a sax player the Fliphead definitely accepts more air and feels better to me. There is not a huge difference in tone, per se, but certainly a bit more volume. If you're getting what you want out of the O'Brian, no need to change. I still have the chromalow, but mostly so my kids can play with it :)

I think I play the melody to a Paquito D'Rivera tune (a minor blues). Also the Bossa is part of a Jobim tune.
