POWER PLAY: WHO REALLY RULES TODAY?

  • In his recent book, Values, Voice and Virtue, British political scientist Matthew Goodwin argues that the ‘people who really run Britain’ are ‘a new dominant class’, that imposes its ‘radically progressive cultural values’ on the rest of the nation. Goodwin’s thesis has caused international controversy, with many labelled as the ‘new elite’ denying they have any power.
So, who is directing society in 2023, and what binds them together? Why do our elected politicians lack authority today, or are they simply unwilling to exercise their authority? Is it possible to reclaim power for The People?
On this ‘Keynote Controversy’ panel, filmed by WORLDwrite volunteers at the Battle of Ideas Festival 2023, the speakers are:
Pamela Dow: Chief operating officer, Civic Future
Professor Frank Furedi: Sociologist and social commentator; executive director, MCC Brussels; author, 100 Years of Identity Crisis: culture war over socialisation
Matthew Goodwin: Professor of politics, University of Kent; author, Values Voice and Virtue: The New British Politics , National Populism: the revolt against liberal democracy and Revolt on the Right
Harry Lambert: Staff writer, New Statesman; editor, New Statesman Saturday Read
Professor Anand Menon: Director, UK in a Changing Europe
The chair is Claire Fox: Director, Academy of Ideas; independent peer, House of Lords; author, I STILL Find That Offensive!
Please could you donate by hitting the THANKS button under the video to enable the charity to keep its volunteer centre open and edit a further 36 debates from the festival.

Great debate and diverse range of views on why this country is so broken.
The problem I have witnessed for decades is that these talk shops keep talking about where we are going wrong as a society, but absolutely nothing is actually done to stop and reverse it.
For me, the answer to inequality and unchecked mass migration comes down to one simple truth. That truth is the want to concentrate wealth into a tiny minority at the top, by those at the top.
Globalisation became a thing when it was realised manufacturing could be shipped over to low wage, low workers rights countries like China. This would massively increase profits for the rich, and the working poor doesn't matter.
Now flooding the UK with migrants means they can work in our country on low wages and the British working poor doesn't matter.
The problem with what they have done is plain for us all to see, and it has accelerated the decline of the West and allowed China to become a super power with cultural views and ways of running a society at odds with our own.
If much of our working class had been seen as the asset that it should have and been invested in with skills needed to build a successful economy. If people were paid enough to not only afford cost of living, but also had disposable income to invest and buy more goods and services then we would be in a very different place.
Printing trillions in various currencies quickly ends up in the hands of billionaires, while the debt gets put on the rest of society. The billionaires use the cash to buy assets, which forces up the asset prices, while the currency gets devalued. So working people's wages does not rise anywhere near as fast as inflation. This leads to an exponential growth in wealth at the top, while everyone else gets asset stripped and poorer.
People at the bottom can no longer afford to buy a house, so have to rent. Again, this is another way workers are being forced to hand more wealth to the rich.
The deeper you go down the rabbit hole, the more you see how corrupt and broken the whole system is.
When politicians leave office they do all seem to say the same thing. They see what needs to be done, but if they try and fix something the whole system is there to stop them from bringing about change.
Our country is like a tree that has rotten from the inside out. It won't take much of a breeze from the outside to knock it over and I fear that time is coming soon, unless we are able to make some radical change.

Harry has lost the “elites”, they are now the woke leftie WEF globalists, they are not the wealthy elites from the past, they are the new Marxist self-flagellating elites with corrupted educations, the DEI virtuous, the collectivist elites, financially they act like the wealthy from the past, but socially they are full on “hate speech”, “cancel culture “, “transgender cultists”, “ climate catastrophists”, “team obsessed”, “OK with child mutilation”, Matt Goodwin has got it sussed

I was impressed by the New Statesman guy until he said "the political class in our country don't want immigration". Come on lol, Labour openly loves it for "diversity" reasons, and the Tories pretend not to love it, but make it as high as possible for their big business buddies.

      Yes.
I also liked his challenge question to Matt Goodwin on Economics because I also wanted the answer to that & am very unipressed that he was too cowardly to answer.
(He also refuses to speak plainly about demographics & the increasing & impending Native minoritisation for all his noises about immigration).

Growth isn't impossible to generate, it just requires doing things people don't want to do, like hard work in the real world, long term thinking & commitments & saying 'No' & applying due Praise & Punishment when it's unpopular with people who currently hold power & influence.

Matt Goodwin got it right, but Frank Furedi explained why. Politicians are responsible mostly for infrastructure projects and management, yet few have any Business or STEM knowledge to speak of, so cannot make any judgement themselves: they live in a vacuum.
Taxing wealth 'created' by inflation would discourage work and wealth creation even more.
What the young need is opportunities to learn useful skills, and use them for wealth creation. Too many get degrees that make them less employable!

Agreeing with the son of an immigrant. Mat Goodwin's analysis is correct BUT we have never seen a golden age.. perhaps we would need to see a radical overhauling of Capitalism and Wealth distribution. Mankind has a whole lotta practice at running the Nation State but presently it has run its' course.
We need to talk about Corporate Power.. how come JP Morgan is still in the hands of the family for over 100 years.?? No excuses no intellectual legal garbage speech please.
