I remember the night it premiered Jan 1, 1984. Was in the marine corps, at a New Year’s Day party. When this came on, the whole place fell silent, and everyone watched. Long time ago.
I was only 17 at the time. My friends and I loved it. Non-Van Halen related but I joined the Marine Corps a couple years later. Semper Fidelis Devil Dog.
anybody that doesn't is a fuckin idiot. that banshee like wailing sound he made was his trademark just like eddie's guitar style just like Mike's high vocals and Alex's big ass, double bass beat, it was all integral...
Indeed. He wrote the lyrics, the vocal melodies, and he did a lot behind the scenes to promote and manage the band. IMO, DLR was a bit too "loose" on stage in most of the live footage from the '80s, but what he did was absolutely vital to the band's success. It goes way beyond Dave's stage presence. Without him, I don't think the VH brothers would have ever gone beyond playing The Whiskey. Dave was the one with the high aspirations and the drive to get the band beyond the clubs and backyard parties.
3:34 I'm sure most VH fans know this, but the fade out for 'Jump' was used 7 years later as the intro and basic layout of the song 'Top of the World' on the F.U.C.K. album.
I just read the book on it. They treated him like shit but I get the sense that Mike was lacking balls. Had he had a more assertive presence, they likely would have respected him (thinking here of the tale about DLR smashing his plate of food on Mike's).
@@InternetUser-d7s Then this kinda gives credence to Billy Sheehan's story about Eddie coming to ask him to join VH. I was thinkin "why would Ed do that?" I guess now we know..Billy obviously turned him down but Billy really liked Mikey..Maybe he knew what was going on, kinda?? Cause Talas opened for VH for a while not sure how long,, he might have seen what was goin on.... Meh, who knows
I love this band mostly when Dave was in it but that is the thing about them that really bothers me, how callous they were to Mike. I guess Mike got a lot of mileage even after they basically made him a hired hand but I don't see how that didn't eat away at him. I don't think that my pride would ever allow me to go along with something like that.
Read his book Crazy From the Heat....U will love it. More then just typical party stories from the road. I dont want to ruin it, so all I can say is he lived a very full life during their hay-day. ✌🏻🤘🏻
eduardo garelli He has photos of girlfriends with him in non-celebrity situations like canoeing the Amazon, etc..... He maybe a life long bachelor but I doubt he is STILL lying to cover up being gay. Who cares if he is? Queen still succeeded & is respected, Judas Priest to. A dude would come forward by now.....
eduardo garelli I’ve read the book, seen him in concert several times, watched more interviews and documentaries on DLR than I can count, and you are the first person I have heard state that he is gay... maybe he is, maybe he’s not, But I’ve never even heard the slightest of rumor that he was gay.
What a tremendous band. Nothing THIS good, lasts forever. (6) tremendous records, all different, and the songwriting…was so great. Dave and Eddie, NOBODY better.
Ready to have your mind blown! There’s a video out there of MTV interviewing Eddie and him saying that “right now”was written before jump in ‘84, it was taped in ‘98.
2:22 -- Yeh, I hear what you mean, but it doesn't sound like a punch-in because we can hear the reverb decay of his last note before the fingertap. Either it's on a different track that was comped with this one - OR - wonder of wonders, Eddie might just be doing it on one track; that's what makes him Eddie, no?
@@0sumgamezzz435 I hope I am, but to be honest Roth is his own worst enemy. Roth can write great songs, and "Eat em and Smile " was proof of that and so was "Skyscraper." Roth needs to return to that and stop being a loud mouth with a stupid grin on his face all the time. Roth is a parody of himself.
I think it would probably be something from Michael Jackson, culturally he was easily that decade's biggest entertainer, particularly from the music industry.
@@0sumgamezzz435 you mean like "Beat It" ... a track that Jackson specifically asked the legendary Eddie Van Halen (RIP), to help him make sound more edgy, rock-relevant and appealing to the cultural masses? one of his biggest hit songs that gave his career a huge "Jump" towards making him internationally famous?
I drink, and I smoke too, and I think it's beautiful only for those who think, and think, agree like me!!! Doing no harm to society, not bothering anyone, and not causing problems for anyone, that's what matters.
I would have always thought Dave was the hard partyer, but I read a long comment from one of their 1983 Diver Down road crew that was not the case! Ed liked a lot of coke and some alcohol, Alex like some coke and a lot of alcohol, Mike was kind of neutral but that Ed would harass him until he caved and indulged. They were doing $2500/night in coke and started out high fiving and hugging and when the coke ran out they all got mad at each other. He said that Dave didn’t partake because he didn’t like hangovers and that he jogged daily to take care of himself so he could perform top level. He saw how the Van Halen’s were a bad influence on Mike so he talked Mike into doing daily jogs and less party. Alex and Ed finally realized they were out of control and made a pact to only do coke once a week. Ed cheated and Alex got mad at him and they had a huge fist fight one day! The roadie said the Van Halen’s were much more about the party than the music! The life of rockers.....

I heard him in an interview say that he doesn't like being called Eddie. He said his name is Edward. My name is Michael. I hate ie when someone takes liberties and calls me Mike. My name is Michael.
Why such crappy lihting though. Unles sthey just liked when its dark maybe. They acted like teenegaers in the last scene, not really an adult type behavior. this was one awesome video
Roth was so proud of himself for landing that back flip.
This song _drove_ the Spring of '84.
Yes it did.
It's only been a week and I think I'll feel this void forever.
Me too. I’m still in shock.
Still can’t quite believe it, it feels like its been just yesterday..
I put my axe down. Haven't looked at it since. Deep Deep depression.

Yep.. MTV premiered it at midnight
I was being played on the radio for days. It was released on radio between the Christmas\New Years holiday break of 83\84

Non-Van Halen related but I joined the Marine Corps a couple years later. Semper Fidelis Devil Dog.
I keep watching stuff like this and I keep getting choked up all over again.
Nothing last forever, but they made it this long. Long live Eddie
Well said.
Rest in peace, Edward.
You made the world a better place with your music, songwriting and patents.
❤
Alex flipping the couch with Michael was hilarious.
I picture Eddie just playing this while having a smoke on the couch like it was no big deal.
The guitar will never sound the same the inevitable master is gone strings in heaven my friend R.I.P. Edward VanHalen
That isolated track has some really beautifully restrained melodic playing by Eddie Van Halen.
I love these vintage videos! I love the 80s in general lol
I dig the isolated guitar tracks on this.
Happier times...
I thought "with audio" meant we could hear them talking. Still cool.
The world is a little less brighter without Eddie. 🙏
Thank you Vsn Halen .... best music... for some of the best times of my life.....
The way they were.
This clip is exactly why we all ❤️ RUclips.
🥰😍😍😍 Wooow, this band in the 80's
One of my best memories...ever!!
I love the guitar in the chorus. Very few notes, but they're just perfect.
This is awesome. Diamond Dave sure was a character! 🙂
Was?
This is awesome makes me sad can't believe Eddie Vanhalen is gone man he was great!!
The Band surely had a GOOD time early on.. Still hard to imagine that things would go SOUTH as fast as it did..
That was awesome!!!
I give David Lee Roth a lot of the credit for the band's success.

This song came out between Christmas of 83 and New Years 84. That same day me and 3 friends dosed on blotter so all day long all I hear is JUMP!
Pure gold 😃🎸
RIP, Edward. VH were world-beaters with amazing swagger. Awesome audio and impressive to see Dave's back-flip... crazy
Alex at the end 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👌
Poor Mikey :(

Lean but full of muscle 💪
