@@iloqin yeah. But trying to dump a low bar squat is a recipe for disaster. If you don't get out fast enough you get a loaded bar smashing your lower back. So that super cheap Home Depot squat rack just cost you a grand in medical bills, potential lost wages, and bodily harm.
ultimaetsolder not about price but those wont ship out for weeks. Built my own stands out of wood that are a little nicer than these (and safer). I also need to be able to put it in the corner of my garage when I’m done.
I used this for 8 months to see if I was into the “Home Gym”. Used the heck out of it, realized a home gym was going to work for me. I’m picking up my Rogue RM-4 tomorrow. Thanks!
Nice vid. I’ve seen the basic idea a few times. Two ways to improve stability and durability. 1. Leave a couple screws or screw a board to the posts to give the gove the concrete something to “bite” into. 2. If you bolt the buckets to a sheet of ply and use it as a platform, the buckets will be far more stable and less likely to tip. Good video. Stay gold.

Made this exact rack a little over a month ago after watching your video. Just wanted to say thanks a lot man, this rack has been keeping me sane during these troubling times. @@fantasticboy3313yeah , just need to control the weights after a set. mine is still standing and gets some.use time to time when I don't want to make my way to the gym.
I made this exact build with some features I got from DIY Dukes wooden half rack. I used one piece of 4x4 treated hardwood, 76 inches long. Drilled inch wide holes at various heights and used screw-on plumbing pipe as the adjustable J-hook. Drilled a hole in the bottom of the 4x4 and another one at the centre of the bucket, and used a long screw to attach the bucket to the wood (to keep it upright and level while the concrete sets). Used double the amount of concrete shown in this video, and once cured, attached a piece of 12 inch long timber to the back of the 4x4 to act as a spacer, which I then screwed the other end of the spacer onto one of the horizontal beams in my backyard fence. I now have a really strong half rack which doesn’t shake and can hold more than 500 pounds. Great video and thanks for the ideas!
Yeah man! I lived in the Philippines 4 years ago, its all diy lat pulldown, barbells, plates. My bench was welded for less than $10, got 200kgs worth of plates done. Love this man
@@Nuttyboiant I'm six-three. I cut the pieces for how tall I am. I cut the back pieces at around 60 inches or so. I wanted the option to unrack it either high bar or low bar. It's really not hard to figure out once you get it going
That’s a big nope from me. My handyman skills will fail me in this situation, but I love the idea and I know many people will love this and some will build more onto this. So dope.
As someone with contracting experience... theres a lot of little things I would do to improve... like drill holes in the wood to make the concrete grab it better. Add a X brace to connect them... that's a biggie. But definitely a good idea. I might make some to throw outside. Would love to squat in the back yard on nice days "tanning and squats". Just never have because it's not worth buying a $300 rack. But this is definitely worth it. Plus if it falls.... won't hurt the lawn. But really need a better way of having the concrete grip the wood.
This is so awesome as I live in Mozambique and been doing everything free weight off the ground and been looking for a rack I could build! Also with more timber you could create anchors and fasten it to a wall with bolts for more stability if you are remote like me. Thanks tons
Could skew the uprights to a wall and use some 2x4's as a "spacer" to make it sit out from your wall a foot or so this would make it much more sturdy and not want to fall over backwards
Great job coop I must say, With a few modifications this could be much safer and much more worth it: •double the amount of concrete in the buckets •link the two platforms together at the top •a barbell safety catch for the bench is a must imo •Flexseal or other weather proof coating for outdoors use depending on how you implement the additions, the finished version could end up costing between $75-$140 An absolute steal even post covid
I have a similar set up. I dig four holes about 2 feet deep in my back yard and used 4 4x4 and some concrete to sturdy them. I can do pull ups, over head press, squats, bench. I attached a couple of chains between them as “safety bars” since i usually lift alone.
I did one for me and my kids and we love it! Found someone throwing out a bunch of 2x4's so got a good start with that. With some screws I had I think the whole thing was done for under $75 including some paint to make it look better.
Spreading the concrete like using rectangular containers instead of buckets and spending a few more bucks adding wooden frame support at the bottom can make it a lot more stable but really great and cheap idea for beginners.
I made one very similar to this, less wood needed and different buckets, works like a dream. Also made a bench, used an old gymnastics matt for the top cushion. pretty nice too.
I built one in my basement with 2x6s that looks just like a normal power rack and it’s attached at the top to the floor joists or whatever and screwed into the concrete floor. Used pieces of 3/4” pipe for the j cups and 1” pipe for safeties
I made a set of these. For what I paid for it 10/10. I did 2x6, glued and screwed them together, then cut a v in the top. Worked great for the 3-4 months I was using it.
For me, i'd def put a support plank on the top and add 2 planks underneath the buckets from keep wobbling and to have them aligned. I wouldn't leave this outside incase it ever rained since it's wood and could warp. This for a budget, garage gym? hell yeah!
A tip is to leave some screws in the base of the wood out, before applying the concrete. They can be nails hammered halfway. This way, the wood will be difficult to detach from the concrete over time.
Add two more buckets with 4x4s in them. Place them 3 feet away (think tires on a car) and run 3/4” black pipe between the 4x4s and the rack. Adds stability and a safety bar.
I doubled up the concrete with 60lbs on each side and it came to 100 CAD + tax. Planning on putting a piece in the middle for racking and a small piece on the back of each stand for bench press support. Thank you for the video!
You inspire people to work out, and better yet help them build Home gyms. I think you're awesome buddy I also do this thing and my old butt is about to rekindle, cheers!
For added stability screw a 2x4 at the top to attach both piece's together.. also you can put it as close the wall as possible and add spacers between the wall and the rack
Well, this is going to be a popular project for a lot of guys. With all the gyms closed in my city and the local fitness stores out of stock...I've decided to sell some of my old, unused equipment...DB's, KB's, plates and bars ... I cannot believe the response. The Roid Rage is showing ..."Well, are you gonna sell, are ya....ANSWER ME!!!!" Dude, I just put the ad up 5 mins ago...and you're one of 20 replies....F*cking crazy.
I didn’t find the concrete that great but attach a bit of ply to the bottom of each bucket and it makes it way more stable. Godsend at the moment, cheers!
I would definitely have made the stand a lot wider for reracking the weight. Decided to make my own bench to get through this lockdown as a first video - squat rack is next but I'll definitely consider making a bigger footprint.
Hmm, made me think about running a slant out the backside to a connecting ground baseboard, almost like a soccer goal for a stabilizer. You could also run side rails that connected the stabilizer right into the side of the bucket.? Since it's too late to screw into the bucket, make square bases out of 2x4s for the bucket to fit into. You could even stabilize with permanent spacers on the rack & bucket squares from there. I bet you'd be golden with that.
Great and useful video. What makes this unsafe is the rocking, that’s easily resolved by adding bracing prod trueing from the back (enough to give plate clearance from the wall) and then pushing the setup against the wall. This way when you put the barbell back from benching or squatting, you won’t have the toppling/shake effect. You maybe need 1 more length of wood for this so it’s an easy and cheap fix
I'm literally building this this weekend. It's going to be ment to last till gyms are open again. Except I'm going to mount some angles would to base of buckets and add a removable cross bar at the top. Keep it mobile causeni need it
Since this COVID BS, we've been pushing and pulling cars. Even the slightest hill can turn it into a crazy workout. You just push it up the hill 10 feet, then it rolls back down and you're ready for another "rep." If no hill, have the person in the car apply the brakes a little. Pushing works quads, glutes, shoulders, tris, chest.. pulling it works hams, bis, lats, the rest of your back and it will always be the perfect resistance because of the brakes
Cool! It can be improved though. To prevent your DIY rack from tipping over, you can add another wood perpendicular to it and let it press against a wall.
Add a couple lag screws near the bottom of each post to give the concrete something to grab on to...if you’re going to use this longer than the quarantine.
How to make this safe, but less mobile: Instead of the concrete in buckets set about 2-4 2x4 spacers and "glue and screw" them into some wall studs. You'll just need enough distance that your plates won't touch the wall. If you're worried about them ripping up the wall with continuous usage get a sheet of cheap plywood to anchor to several points, mount 2x4 crossbeams to the plywood and mount your rig on the crossbeams. Really Coop, those buckets are sketchy AF. Edit: And really, make sure you cut at your height. You shouldn't be doing calf raises to get the bar out.
I made these about 8 years ago, still going strong. I recall using 2 bags of concrete and you don't need to mix at all, just fill with the mortar / concrete mix (after your posts are set) and then add water
I’m glad I found this video. I’ve been debating with myself if I should buy a cheap squat with pull up par or just build one. Now I’ll build one out of 4x4s then use 2x4s for the rack portion.
Thanks Coop! I've been trying to figure out how to train outdoors once the weather gets a little nicer. This seems like a perfect solution. Could easily stash it behind the shed where it won't be an eyesore. I'm thinking some pegs on the back of the tall uprights might be good for mounting another 2x4 crossmember. Add some stability but still be able to disassemble and easily store. And of course, paint the whole thing black. Stay well and strong!
I’ve made nearly the bang same thing a few weeks ago but I put another level on the other side lower down for rack pulls and barbell shrugs works a treat spend £100 on timber and ended up building that plus a dip station! It’s amazing what you can do with a bit of timber and a few scaffolding poles!
We can also do it diy just wasting little space on one corner of room by building brick wall of the height we need for plates and cushioning it for preventing damage but it's permanent. But this wooden squat rack looks great and we can move it around.👍👍

I fucking love this shit. I'm in the UK and all panic buyers have bought up all the gym equipment. With a few modifications I'll be doing just this!
It may have been a lil more expensive but, I believe I would have went with 4x4 posts
I’ve been rocking one of these setups since 2016 when I was a poor college kid.
People be squatting on this whilst being afraid of titan fitness
Listen here boy, my titan x3 is effing solid!
never heard of ppl being afraid of squatting in titan fitness rack. i have one and its pretty solid
Those Chinese Jerk/Squat blocks are over $700 and are very stable.
Yeah straight from Wuhan
LMAO, it's actually $699.
Cross bar and fix it back to the wall and this thing is a great build
