    The most shocking thing about Weevil and Rex losing in a two-on-one duel against Siegfried was that those two joke-characters actually thought they had a chance against the antagonist of that filler arc. They're both stated to be among the best in the region, but neither of them has ever actually won a duel outside their introductory duel against each other

    O’Brien vs Trueman was honestly one of my favourite duels in all of GX. Sure the action wasn’t anything to write home about but watching Trueman psychologically torture this character we knew to be strong and level headed was a strong indicator of how dangerous Darkness was as a villain. And then after the Duel we find out the accident didn’t play out the way Trueman depicted it (or maybe never happened at all)

    Loss against Raphael took Atem's character in a direction that should've been feature in the manga as well. Manga never fully focused on negative traits of his pride and self-rightousness, but anime put much more emphasis on it and made him go through great development.

      Also reminds me of how Joey acted towards Rishid / Odion about his Trap strategy - Joey acting like he had some right to judge Rishid on how he Duels and who he is as a Duelist because of it, like he himself is somehow "superior".
      Joey also had a similar attitude towards Reiko in the (non-canon) Yu-Gi-Oh! R manga, who used a chess-based milling Deck (Puppet King, Queen, and so on) - Joey getting all pissy over her strategy (which was also beating him) and talking like she was "wrong" for Dueling that way.

      You know, for me, that loss is only horrible because after that NOTHING happened to Aoi/Blue Angel/Girl/Maiden that redeemed her. If that were her only brutal humiliation it would have been a nice narrative springboard to her reinventing herself and making her grow feel earned.
      She could have had a W against Soulburner, Ghost Girl or a rematch against Specter but as it is, is just another wasted female character. We should have expected that after 5 other shows that did the same.

      @@monkey_blu Honestly, I still don't understand why the writers couldn't let Blue Girl defeat Soulburner. Soulburner already had beaten Go so why Aoi too? They let him defeat two of his heroes and they probably would've let him defeat Playmaker too if 1. there had been a reason for a duel and 2. PM didn't have plot armor. So they went for Revolver instead later. Soulburner already got a couple of big wins, so Aoi really should've gotten at least one aswell.

    My absolute all time favorite end to a duel is where Nasch loses to Yuma.
    Before Yuma can destroy the Barian's Hope, Nasch activates a card that negates the attack and forces both of them to draw another card and activate the effect of the card, or lose the duel.
    You'd think that after all this time, Zexal would defeat Nasch through the power of Double or Nothing he decided to Shining Draw, but instead, Yuma realizes what he lost to the Door of Destiny after he obtained the power of Zexal: Himself.
    Instead of sacrificing his friend for the power of the Numeron Code and the future, he instead un-overlays the Zexal morph and decides to negate Utopia's attack AGAIN; continuing to find a future where neither of them have to die.
    Nasch on the other hand, decided to use his Chaos Draw on a card that would have let him win if Yuma decided to attack again, however, his life points would become the difference in the damage dealt. Since there was no battle, his life points become 0.
    After all these years, this is still my absolute favorite ending to any duel in Yugioh ever.

No one really expected Joey to win and the fact that the duel ended with him in a winning position and the only reason he lost is because he couldn't finish the attack was amazing. Everyone is talking about yuga vs luke r2, but actually even the duel before that- Gakuto vs Neil- was quite a shock. I mean, Neil is forced to draw (when do you ever see that happen at all?) and to Gakuto after the whole Gakuting stint even. It was definitely shocking and also one of my favorite sevens duels

    • @mikai4738
      @mikai4738 2 года назад +4

      Wasn't that surprising if you kept an eye on the score board. It was to expect that the winning team would end up with 777 points for the 7 theme. That wouldn't have been possible if Neil had beaten Gakuto unless they would have given us a draw for Yuga vs Luke r2 instead but most were sure it would end in a Yuga or Luke loss.
      And yeah, the Gakuto vs Neil duel was good even though I wished they had found a different way to show Gakuto's fear of facing a Maximum monster than making him act like a clown to hide his insecurities. (and gakuting stayed a dumb joke sadly)

    • @mikai4738
      @mikai4738 2 года назад

      @@uninspiredname2974 The final arc made gakuting actually even dumber. During Neil vs Gakuto, it felt okay because it was *Gakuto's* way of handling pressure and fear but he eventually understood that his gakuting was stupid and embarrassing the Sogetsu style and his ancestor Gakugen so he changed back to his usual kimono and dueled seriously again. But in the last arc, suddenly gakuting was first done by Gakugen to end a war and not just a silly idea of Gakuto? Then why the hell make such a big deal of it being a disgrace to the Sogetsu family if a Sogetsu ancestor made himself look like a clown before anyway? And it's a dang shame how Gakuto's memories were just about gakuting. Nothing of his friends or what he learned through the show. Even freaking Neil had scenes of Yuga and Roa in his returning memories.

    • @uninspiredname2974
      @uninspiredname2974 2 года назад +2

      @@mikai4738 That's... honestly I consider that a rather poor read of that episode.
      Gakuto's entire conflict and arc in sevens is in what it means to be the successor to the Sougetsu style and how he should evolve it further. Gakuting is here a way he- eleven, let's remember- tries to do so, in his panic, and fails. The reason this is the key to his memories in the final arc is because it represents what he *gained* from his friendship with yuuga and the others: the resolve and will to push on his own road and better himself, even if it should be in that way. Setting no limits for himself, "it wouldn’t do not to fly towards a challenge", as his summoning chant for Icezark claims.
      Yet, the fact he was still affected by Monster Reborn means he still had doubt and insecurity in his heart. The scene in the battle royale then is not meant as gakugen telling him "gakuting is dumb"- that's all Rinnosuke- but that "trying to improve and renew yourself and therefore the sougetsu style is not wrong".
      He never really abandons gakuting, hell it's even in the second opening, and is referenced a number of times; rather, the distinction is that when facing neil he is *ashamed* of it and has doubts about it the entire way through.
      That is not how the successor of the Sougetsu style should fight. That is not a distinguished duel, that is just a jester flailing about.
      He should not be ashamed of having attempted to do so, it takes a lot of bravery to do something like that, however ridiculous it may appear.
      The reveal then that Gakugen also used Gakuting to solve a conflict is then to be read in the same way. This *is* the way the style has been born and evolved. Not as a strict road whose deviations are walled away (Gakuto's personality post monster reborn echoes this sentiment), but as a style free to evolve and connect to the future. That is why the evolution of the Sougetsu style is- or passes through- Gakuting.
      Freedom from social norms and what is expected of him. One of the core themes of Sevens is that children should be allowed, free and encouraged to express themselves as they wish, not held down by traditions or other such things- but rather free to embrace them if they so wish, but also to allow these traditions to grow with them. We see this in Asana, as well, if you want another example.
      Sorry for the long message, by the way...! I just have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this season and I feel it is very good and has some surprisingly subtle writing at times especially in how it handles its themes and characters.

    • @mikai4738
      @mikai4738 2 года назад

      @@uninspiredname2974 As I said before: Gakuting used to be okay. It was fine during ep 50 when Gakuto had to face Neil. I could see why he came up with it (finding a way to develop the Sogetsu style but also to hide his fear of losing) as cringy as it may was. But that flashback of Gakugen made Gakuto realize that he doesn't need to turn into a clown to develop the Sogetsu Style. He realized it wasn't just an embarrassing thing for Rinnosuke and Ranze but also for his ancestor and for himself. Gakuting maybe was still featured in the second OP but it was barely a thing after season 1. I only remember it happen during two recap episodes (the one with the student council meeting of Goha 6 and 7 and the one about Yuo's birthday). It wasn't really a main thing until the last arc. If Gakuting had been just Gakuto's thing, I wouldn't really complain but Gakugen suddenly having fooled around to make his enemies laugh and stopping a war like that felt really out of nowhere.
      Btw: Gakuto being affected by Monster Reborn had absolutely nothing to do with him having insecurities since EVERYONE except Luke and Roa were affected - and those two only still had their memories because of their "deep bond with Yuga prior the existence of Rush Duel". And yes, that reason was actuall said in the anime.

Sure the duel result was easy to see coming, but the music and weight of Aster beating Jaden with that last attack alongside his backstory (in the OG Sub at least). Combined with the reaction of Jaden losing hope as his faithful deck is wiped clean literally. I think thats enough to "Qualify" it for this category. Also: How would it be possible for Spectre's VA not wanting to voice him after the Lightning duel when he got a few lines in the last episode? It seems more likely the VA was very busy at that time or was sick. I remember how Reiji had barely any screentime/lines during Synchro Arc because his VA had apparently some heath issues.

    Kaiba "lost" to Noah (I mean, if Yugi didn't take over the duel against Noah, Kaiba would have lost due to the effect of his "Last Turn" trap card)
    Joey lost to Marik (Okay, the shocking part of the duel was the end, that how close Joey was to win)

    Yuma losing to Kite/Kaito was a huge one for me because I thought we were at the end of the series (I didn't know about Zexal 2 until after this episode aired lol) and it would've made sense for Yuma to pick up the win over one of his main rivals, but nope he ended up losing.
    Fun fact I think Yuma is the only protagonist to have never defeated one of his main rivals (yeah I know he beat Shark a good amount of times but Yuma and Kaito only dueled each other twice and Kaito won both times. I honestly thought that Atem losing to Rafael would be at the top of this list because no one saw his defeat coming. Not only did Rafael push the Pharoah into playing the seal of orichalcos by having the advantage for a good portion of the duel, but Rafael legitimately defeated Atem in spite of the seal.
    I was also surprised that Seto Kaiba and Yugi's duel at duelist kingdom wasn't on the list. It was still shocking to see Yugi throw the duel, even if it was to save Kaiba.
    Rin defeating Yugo was also worth the list because it was unexpected, and solidified Rin as possibly the best duelist among the bracelet girls, not counting Ray Akaba.
    I was surprised that Yuzu's victory over Yuya wasn't on the list since she was the first main female protagonist to defeat the main male protagonist, even if it was because Yuya didn't understand how pendulum summoning worked. Still a shocking victory.
    Seigfried's victory against Joey wasn't really shocking, as his rivalry was with Seto Kaiba, so it was expected for Joey to lose.
    Kaibaman defeating Jaden was also a nice edition to the list, and a devastating loss to Jaden.
    This was a mostly solid list of shocking results of yugioh duels. Maybe you can have a list of the best female duelist duels or rank the best female duelist in Yugioh.

    I won't lie, one of the most shocking back then when it first aired was the result of Joey Vs. Real Marik. I was so sure he would win. The guy was still standing after Ra blasted him and even got a monster out that had more than enough power to beat him. All he had to do was call and attack and he wouldn't have just won the duel but would have also gotten Ra and his duel with Yugi. And I know the rule about only certain people being able to control Ra, but I have a workaround. What if, after witnessing him survive its attack, Ra deemed Joey strong enough to wield it. I mean, the dude survived an attack from a GOD, that has to mean something. How good of a finale would that have been if the finals consisted of Joey and Yugi having their foreshadowed match? But no, instead he failed to call an attack and lost because he fell unconscious/died.

    Other duels with unexpected results, at least for me, are the following:
    Yugo vs Rin (Arc-V): Despite being Rin's only duel, she managed to get the victory over Yugo (who had not lost on screen until that moment)
    The Lukeman vs Yuo (SEVENS): An unknown entity would end Yuo's idea of being the only one with Fusion in that world (not to mention the importance of knowing the types of Monsters)
    Yuga vs Luke R2 (SEVENS): The final of a tournament. That means the MC must always win for whatever reason... except not here. Luke demonstrates why he is the strongest duelist in SEVENS and that he doesn't say it just to be a joke or just to show off.
    Soulburner vs Bohman (VRAINS): Taking into account that Bohman was already defeated several times by Playmaker and Soulburner beat everyone left and right, one would think that Soulburner had it easy, but he lost (of all the characters, the only character that gave Soulburner a loss was Bohman)

    I love how we went from "those two girls won, but one was a surrender and in the other case the deck didn't work" to Sevens and Go Rush having victories for Asana, Tiger, Romin (TWICE), Yuna, even Yuamu beating fellow protagonists... Oh, and Asana actually beating Neil too (which was surprising too, and it was nice how Asana didn't just put the aces of her companion in the deck but adapted it to having two cards outside her archetype, when usually in these situations it isn't needed and the external monsters just work as extremely specific saves).
    Representation could still be better (I'd love for a girl to be a straight-up protagonist by herself), but the leaps.
    I would have added the second and third match between Yuga and Luke two, in the second I really thought Yuga would have won but not only he didn't, the final exchange was spectacular to booth, and in the third we knew Yuga would have taken the crown but they simplicity of the duel and the way both characters managed to sneak in ulterior copies of their aces in the deck was pretty surprising.

    While Tiger defeating Yuga in their rematch was surprising, I still hate how this duel and the outcome had no real meaning in hindsight. Tiger dueled Yuga to stop him from helping Swirly but why did she never bother to straight up tell him what's the problem with Swirly? From that one flashback, it seemed like she already knew or had at least an idea who Swirly really was so why not reveal that? Luke was angry at Tiger for how she hurt Yuga in that duel for a while (even saying he can't forgive her yet to Asana and apologizing to Yuga for his big sister's behaviour) but when he gets the chance to duel her again in the last arc, he kinda "forgot" these negative feelings and Tiger had to be mean towards Yuga again to trigger Luke to fight her. The issue is that Season 4 feels strangely disconnected from Season 3, unless those events have to be mentioned for the plot to make sense. The trueman depression-thing is also very strange atmospherically because it presents the villain-goal in the arc a lot less morally ambiguous in a bad way.
      The idea that is being presented and eventually challenged by Judai and then reverse-challenged by Z-one's tragedy in 5DS is that it would be better for humanity to end like that instead of meeting a more painful end. This completely works with the way Fubuki goes down in the duel against Darkness, with him believing that he went out on his own terms(aka. being content and somewhat happy with the result). It does not work when you break everyone's spirit in such a way. What Yubel did to Cobra is ironically more in-line with Darkness' intended endresult than what his own underling does.

    • @NicoTreecko
      @NicoTreecko 2 года назад

      @@lpfan4491 I agree that plot wise Season 3 and Season 4 of GX were not very cohesive, outside of 1 factor, but they very much complimented each other in tone. And that tone was tailored to fit the main thing that carriered over from Season 3 to Season 4, the new Judai.
      Judai was no longer the happy go lucky kid we were introduced to and what happened in Season 3 was actually really heavy. That's why there were so many episodes in Season 4 were people were worried about him or frustrated how he changed or why he very much pushed his most of his friends away from the actual plot this time instead of handling it together as they did before. But to match this darker/more gritty tone, they also focused on the aspect of school life that was naturally next: graduation and thinking about the future. The fear and doubt of what comes once you leave school I felt played well with the main antagonist of Season 4.
      Granted, I will admit the whole Nightshroud and Fujiwara stuff did feel out of nowhere the first time I watched week to week since it was only brought in Atticus/Fubuki's Season 1 introduction and again in Season 2 to try and show Zane/Ryo/Hell Kaiser he had fallen from the path. But binge watching episodes back to back, it didn't seem like as big of a leap. The Dark World stuff with Trueman and Nightshroud/Darkness could've be executed better, but I feel the big disconnect with it was how isolated it felt from the rest of the cast until the very end while thematically I can see what they were going for. Would've also helped if they could've linked Nightshroud back to the Light of Destruction or Sacred Beast/Kagemaru or the Gentle Darkness that was the power in Judai the whole time or just the existence of Judai/Yubel on this plane.
      Could've been better but hindsight always makes it that way and this was the ending of the 1st Yugioh spinoff so inexperience plays a factor too. I will give them props though as no other Yugioh series has made a major permanent change in personality to their main protagonists by their own choice. Closest we get in my opinion is Season 3 A.I. in Vrains; tempted to say Zexal with Shark to Nasch but that's more of regaining lost memories kinda deal and is a Rival, not the main hero.

  • @jennynoelle6782

    Probably the most shocking duel result (from Zexal) is the final match between Misael and Kaito. Sure, it was the Barian arc, and characters were dropping like flies, but going into the very hyped duel, you don't expect for one of the major characters to die (if you weren't spoiled to it) - especially not "suffocated in the vacuum of space while his loved ones watch on helplessly" - before the final fight with the main antagonist. I mean, Kaito even won the duel - most duels during that arc resulted in the loser's "death".
    And then, the next time we see the loser, Misael, he's finally 'seen the light' and is willing to work with the good guys (thanks in part to the whole "my good-guy opponent encouraged me to not hate humans anymore" thing)… and then he immediately challenges Don Thousand, is beaten in a single turn, and promptly "dies".
    It's not the first character death, nor is it technically the most emotional (that honor would probably go to Shark, who was introduced in episode 1, was one of the (if not the) last to die, and probably got the best character arc in the entire series), but it is one that really stands out.

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 2 года назад +1

      Shark is legit the star of the series. Consistently whenever he showed up, I enjoyed the runtime more than when he didn't show up.(Though I still only really watched Season 1 because the plot's momentum really slowed down when the barians properly got involved and the sudden shift in pace threw me out of my seat. And I know basically all the spoilers anyways by this point.)

      With Mizael, it's less that he quit hating humans, and more that he was finally able to accept that Tachyon Dragon wasn't his partner but a tool to control him. A large part of the duel was getting him to accept that since even after his memories got returned thanks to Draglubion he refused to believe them due to the trust he had in his bond with Tachyon.

  • @Zetact_

    I think a good choice for a wild result is Judai vs. X. Sure, X is just a filler villain of the week but having a guy whose goal is to win by deck out lose by Judai decking him out?
    Leo proves again that he is braindead by losing because he self-burnt for "hurr I need to make up for my actions." Which also included LITERALLY GIVING ONE FOURTH OF ZARC TRAINING AND POWER.

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 2 года назад +2

      It is still amazing how much of a mess the second half of ArcV actually is, in that it's not even possible to properly seperate the good from the bad. The sudden plottwist that Zarc actually managed to fully take over Yuya during the duel against Yuri is really well done, but it is tainted by the narrative arc just being completely botched already. It could have never happened if Leo didn't pull that whole interdimensional carding-bs and just made sure Yuri was raised to be a decent person instead.

      @@lpfan4491 Yeah. He's also the one who figured out how pendulum summoning worked. Not to mention how he literally changed his deck multiple times and still never had any major wins. Kaibaman beating Jaiden was not shocking at all! Jaiden was having nightmares about losing a duel and his friends suffering as a result. So Winged Kuriboh arranged for Kaibaman to duel Jaden to get over his fear. If Jaden had won, that would have been shocking because then the whole duel would have been pointless.
