Follow the map. It takes time but it isn’t that hard. More daunting than anything but you can get through it quite quickly when you get into it.
Peakspace
Beyond the story and cutscenes, another thing I'd say that Subspace Emissary has over World of Light is the basic gameplay. Subspace gave us actual stages filled with enemies, while not all stage is all that great, it felt interesting and typically tried to keep some of the design philosophy of various Nintendo games when they're roughly recreating an area from a Nintendo game.
World of Light is just regular Smash fights with gimmicks added to them. ('Oh, the floor is poison!' 'Oh, you fall asleep when you land on the ground!') It was kinda fun on a first playthrough but got real tedious real fast. By the time I was in Darkhon's realm I was saying 'Ugh, *please* let this end.'. There's a reason I did multiple runs of Subspace Emissary but only went through World of Light twice, the second time only for the achievement.
This is so true, ESPECIALLY with ultimate expanded character roster. I could definitely see sora with pyra and Mithra, comparing the blade's
Subspace Emissary is the best thing to happen for Brawl. I have hope that the next Smash Bros Game has a story mode like Subspace Emissary but better, more character arcs and interactions, more enemies and levels from Nintendo franchises, and maybe even voice acting.
Don’t disrespect smash run like that the game mode was one of the best

I sadly never got to finish subspace because my disk was scratched so I got to the Snake cutscene and it crashed

sakurai will never allow a real story mode again because of brawl leaks. honestly that’s so petty that it rivals the reason final fantasy 2’s version of the ultima spell was so bad in terms of pure spite

I actually liked the Subspace Essimary more than the World of Light. Cause of alot of cutscenes and has 2 Player Co-op mode
I totally agree.
World Of Light was pretty meh but at least it made huge efforts in trying to put the player in the worlds of the involved franchises. Subspace Emissary did nothing of that. It presented enviroments and minions that were evidently meant to be even for every character, from the toony ones like Mario and Sonic to the most serious ones like Samus and Snake. But the result was something that looked like coming out from the darkest chapters of The Neverending Story, or all the fantasay movies of that period.
In my book the perfect Story Mode for Smash should have the diverse enviroments of Melee's Adventure mode, the cutscenes of Subspace emissary, the narrative of World Of Light and the gameplay of The Great Maze.
Imagine for example a literal Metroidvania where you start with Simon and Samus to the rescue of the other people.
When World of Light was announced for Ultimate, me and my brother were so excited to play the story mode in multiplayer because we never got to experience Subspace, but when we got the game we were really disappointed that that it wasn’t multiplayer

I loved smash run.
While I understand why you want another true story, we also gotta understand the devs. Sakurai himself says that the reason they stop making expansive story modes for smash is beacuse people uploading the cutscenes to the Internet and as he puts it making the stroy less amazing for some people

I actually like the great maze. It gives you access to all the characters you’ve gathered so far, and lets you re-explore every area you’ve been to. I loved playing the game multiplayer where me and my buddy would have to plan out which characters we would take and why. It was always a more challenging and engaging part of the game right at the end. So that’s why I like it.
