  • TEAM SGG PATREON / somegadgetguy So help me I'm doing a reaction video. The end is nigh. Following Samsung's Unpacked event, the guys at PetaPixel had a lot of thoughts to share about the S24 Ultra. During a recent podcast, they asked:
    "Is AI camera tech enough to warrant a new phone model, since there wasn't any change in the hardware?"
    Which is a pretty complicated topic to dig into. While the gents had a lot to say about Samsung (and Samsung's competition), I felt they also missed some key points. So here we are. I'm responding to a podcast.
    I AM SO SORRY.

      It seems like a year was skipped because Samsung changed thr numbering scheme on the Note line to be in line with the S line. There was no Note 6. There was the Note 7 after the Galaxy S7 but we know what happened to the Note 7. And that's when the FE series of phones were born.

    I could be wrong here, and I'm sorry, I'm only about half way through the video so far, but couldn't something as simple as the new 8 Gen 3 be considered a reasonably reasonable upgrade?
    I assume that it has a different ISP to the 8 Gen 2 though could be wrong, so that in itself could help photo and video a little.
    Often a newer version of a processor in a camera is mentioned as a big new feature on camera reviews, even if the sensor remains the same, an example being the Fujifilm X-S10 to X-S20

    • @SomeGadgetGuy

      Yup. You're spot on. A lot of improvements come from the chip giving manufacturers a baseline for image processing, and those capabilities are also improved year over year from MediaTek and Qualcomm. We went YEARS with Apple selling phones with MINOR camera hardware differences, yet we don't stage these kinds of conversations after an iPhone launch.
      "Did Apple do ENOUGH?"
      We only seem to worry about upgrades after Android launches.

    Recently the OM1 camera was updated after 2 years from the original with a "Mark ii" which didn't update the sensor or the processor. It apparently had a RAM upgrade which made it possible to shoot bursts for longer periods, and everything else was software features. That lead to a pretty big outcry.
    Camera people expect a lot more hardware upgrades but phones in recent years have been mostly incremental in terms of HW upgrades.

    The skipped galaxy note was Note 6, and they did actually release a note that year. They just called it Note 7 (which was in fact the one that blew up) and the reason behind skipping the number was probably to make the numbering similar to the S series. Before that point, the note phones which were released after the S series phones would have a lower number (e.g. Note 3 was released after S4).

      @SomeGadgetGuy  3 месяца назад

      A shotgun will help a little, but unless you're using parabolic mics it won't change much. It'll still be camera-perspective audio.
      If they're on a PA of any kind you might be able to patch in and record directly off that. If not, I'd look at some kind of wireless option. I'll be reviewing some less expensive wireless mics soon-ish.

    • @sucafrutpi
      @sucafrutpi 3 месяца назад

      @@SomeGadgetGuy I am dealing with no cooperation, so remote microphones are not really an option and there is usually no PA system and they will NOT let me patch in for the few meetings that have a PA system operating, so with my limited knowledge an amplified shotgun mic seemed like the best option for recording audio from a fixed distance in front of the camera. I am open to any suggestions though.
      I had thought about a parabolic mic, but thought the dish would need to be too big for indoor use.
      It's kind of a travesty; the town had a great non-profit that covered all the events that was funded by the public access money, but the town cut off the funding for seemingly political reasons and then took over the public access channel, but won't cover many meetings and events. ESPECIALLY if the information in the meeting doesn't follow 'the company line' as the saying goes. It's very sad if you believe in democracy and open government.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  3 месяца назад

      Oh a shotgun will help, but it probably wont be a RADICAL difference. The reason I like these new little consumer wireless mics is they're super discrete, so you could just stash them around their table. You wouldnt even need them to be worn.
      But if they're openly working against you, then even something like that is probably a bridge too far.
      Without seeing the space, I can't think of other solutions.

      It's a GREAT option in GREAT light. I like it a lot, and the actual optics are really fun for a phone. It's an interesting fight, because it's a more expensive lens to solve the problem of using two separate sensors.
      Sony takes an important win that it can shoot 4k/120 with the telephoto, but photo and video IQ on a vivo or xiaomi will be better in more challenging lighting.

    It's both funny and sad that these same reviewers would detail the benefits of a larger sensor high megapixel camera that uses a medium format sensor, also bringing up it's drawbacks, but either act oblivious, or willingly misrepresent things when a larger sensor is used on a phone.
    You wouldn't solely focus on the zoom range/focal length of a dedicated camera lens and say one is better because it has more zoom, so why is that the case with phones?

      @@SomeGadgetGuyI would disagree respectfully on this one. The biggest downside of the Ultras till now was the big zoom gap between 3x and 10x, as everything in-between that range had to be done with crappy digital cropping and obvious AI upscaling.
      Not to mention that most people use 5x over 10x, myself included. Or the fact that the 10x camera had a lackluster f/42 aperture in Full Frame equivalent.
      Though, I would agree that Samsung should've kept the 10x camera and just replace the 3x camera with the 5x one and rely on the main 200MP camera to do a proper 3x crop, since it has the megapickels to work with.

    I think the point about wreaking havoc creatively mainly has to do with APIs.
    Android's camera2api is honestly a hot mess both in terms of the api itself and the companies' implementation of it (it can be really hit or miss with stuff like mcpro24fps). Android manufacturers often limit a lot of their cool stuff to their original app because the api either doesn't even allow for it or because they want users to use their own camera app or a specific app (I've read that Samsung gives filmic proper access but blacklists mcpro24fps because reasons, but I can't confirm).
    In contrast, Apple usually gives third party camera apps access to their state of the art features like log, dolby vision, proraw, etc. pretty quickly and seamlessly.
    Now sure, MotionCam is a stroke of genius, but honestly, that has more to do with its developers who kinda found a loophole to accomplish what they did (with raw compression and so on) rather than android's api.
    I'm an android fan myself, but credit should be given where it's due.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  4 месяца назад +1

      Right. Which is why it should matter even more that we point out when manufacturers support Cam2 and CamX and which phones have built in camera apps that you won't NEED to turn to other apps, right?

    • @thatdude7170
      @thatdude7170 4 месяца назад

      @@SomeGadgetGuy I mean, it can get pretty convoluted once you really get deep into the details of Cam2. Even manufacturers can exhibit inconsistent behavior. For instance, Xiaomi doesn't enable eis in third party apps for many of their phones, but they do in some of them (mostly flagships apparently).
      Samsung's support can differ between their exynos and snapdragon model.
      There's also some specs which are simply not known by most people (reviewer or otherwise) which can have immense impact but which are really hard to find, such as the total curve points (tcp) used for tone-mapping video.
      As for good first party options, they're nice, obviously, but there's always some baked-in processing that kinda ruins the footage in some way. Even the most purist companies like Sony have some noise reduction, sharpening, etc., which could benefit from being turned off in a third party app like mcpro24fps. Seriously, the first time you successfully turn off all these stuff can be a revelation, especially when you realize a budget phone can give you better looking footage than many high-end phones do by their default processing.
      As for CamX, I've never even seen it implemented, mostly heard theoretical conjecture about it, but admittedly, I don't know too much about CamX.

      @SomeGadgetGuy  4 месяца назад +1

    • @thatdude7170

      @@SomeGadgetGuy Sure, it's just that there's a limit to how the deep the rabbit hole each reviewer goes. Granted, most mainstream reviewers don't go too much further than saying "there's a hole," but the hole can get too damn deep.
      As for Petapixel, I like Chris and Jordan, but they're kinda out of their element with smartphones and stuff that aren't related to ILCs.

To me quality is more important than quantity. Samsung is throwing a multiple cameras having a stupidly high megapixel counts backed by tonne of AI this absolutely make no sense. Heavy dose of AI ruins the image quality and high Megapixels causes shutter delay and motion blur.

If you could legitimately put an m43 camera in the front pocket of a pair of Levi 501's, wouldn't that be a nice perk for an every day camera?
      And getting away from Apple using dinky little sensors, the telephotos on Xiaomi and Vivo are now larger than the vast majority of older point and shoot cameras, going up to proper 1/2" type sensors.

I'm using a heavy dslr for my travel vlog , but sometimes there are moments when you can't take the camera with you , and the smartphone can work as a second camera perfectly , especially in a daylight. Apple could solve more or less the "smartphone" video look(overshappend, overstaturated) with pro res log videos , however on android, I couldn't see any "official" solution yet from manufacturers, only 3rd party software.
      I'll have to try and test it myself because I really hate ios and don't want to use iphone at all, despite almost everyone claiming it's best for video.

      We keep losing the brands that did that stuff well. Like LG had the best manual video and audio controls by a MILE, and they were early to HDR and LOG support, even giving you bitrate options. Ditto Xiaomi LOG is pretty good too.
      Just because it's not on SamApple, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. 👍

    These guys must prefer APS-C sensors to full frame because their lenses give them so much more zoomies. Wait, sensor size matters? That affects focal length equivalents?? The hell, you say! Great points there Juan. The iPhone camera fanboys will always find reasons everything else is worse, even when for a couple of years now the iPhone has NOT been winning blind camera tests by professional photographers. Samsung/Pixel has been winning more than iPhone - other than video. Apple's got some video magic still up their sleeves.
    The AI photography stuff ... meh. It can be useful for some small 'fixes' but it's not great, and the usefulness is limited. I'm a much bigger fan of being able to go through my photos, long press a subject and make a sticker or a transparent png of it. (Handy when making custom S-Pen pointer icons!) Oh, hey! the 12R has that too! Cool!!
    Honestly, the best AI bit I've found that can be genuinely useful and potentially "game changing" is the AI summary of audio in the voice recorder app. Man, I recorded my drive with my dog going to the groomer the other day, because he hates the car and screams/cries/sings the whole time and I wanted to share the experience with my wife ... not only did it do a pretty good (not perfect to be sure) job of capturing the audio, but transcribing my conversation with the small upset creature, but the AI summary was so hilariously spot on that I laughed myself to tears when I read it. If they can take that kind of AI stuff and make it fast and accurate, man ... all meetings will require recording going forward. It was fantastic.
    At the end of the day, I used to really love my Note 10+, HATED the curved display. Said I wouldn't touch another one until they made it flat. Well, it's flat now, I really like my Ultra so far (only been a week today), and I LOVE that flat anti-reflective display. Enough that I haven't put any of the screen protectors I bought for it yet ... the anti-reflective film OR the shiny tempered glass. I put my money where my mouth has been for years. Flat screens are king in my world. For everything else? We're kind of at the point where flagship = flagship = flagship = flagship with minor software differences.

      @ion_X 3 месяца назад

      @@SomeGadgetGuy One would say they are, essentially useful :D
      One example I brought up to people, to put things into perspective was:
      Imagine if companies started to remove, specially true for the 3.5mm port; from every other device, such as TVs, or even cars, anything else that are not what's essentially an dedicated or "professional" audio device. If that would make any sense, or would be in any way acceptable at any point.
      We know the excuse of "nOt eNoUgh sPaCe" is demonstrably and provably Not True, but a wilful, and as Lois Rossman would put it, which I agree with, a malicious anti consumer choice
      And the other deflection of "convenience" applies the same with every other device; but we know it's also disingenuous, as it would be more acceptable, only if it were a Choice, of having the option to have both connection methods and use the one that's Necessary for each user and use case
      And let's not even get started with the dongle, with is more of the same as the previous two examples
      (Personally I have been using In Ear Monitors for a decade now and Need to be plugged in for many hours at a time, so sometimes is very disruptive to have to charge the earpieces which during it's entire time cannot be used for One;
      Then there's the sound quality and latency and connection quality amongst other drawbacks of wireless
      So thank you once again for being the one of the extremely few who brings up the essential and useful aspects, and bringing new relevant discussions; and don't just accept that these are just the way things are, as if forgetting that it even ever existed before, and as if it's just normal and expected of everyone to just accept the inferior functions and designs as the new normal moving forwards
