A great Native alternative to the tri-color beech is the Carolina dogwood. It has the same coloration.

Carolina Dogwood, aka Cornus florida, are a great tree for the southern US. However, our area is at the top end of their hardiness zone, making them a bit unreliable. Tri-Color Beech are very hardy for our cold, northern illinois winters.
Also, the coloration on the dogwood is vastly different from the color on Tri-color beech. Dogwood typically have green or green and white variegated leaves throughout the summer, and red in the fall. Tri-color beech have purple, pink and green leaves all summer long.
