I cry for joy whenever I see this because I recall seeing it on Broadway in 1979 and it was so jaw-droppingly fabulous that I thought "I will NEVER see anything better than this!" In person it was so extraordinary and magical.
I had a wonderful career as a studio backup singer and met Marvin Hamlisch very early on in his career. It was way before A Chorus Line and he had written a song and needed a demo of it. He was high strung and suffering from an ulcer, God bless him! He was very kind to me. I was thrilled in subsequent years for his enormous success, so we’ll deserved. Thanks for sharing your gifts with us, Marvin. RIP
Gorgeously done, loving the (intentional) irony of a song celebrating the unique, individual charisma of 'one' while part of a lock step crowd of people singing and dancing in unison. Fantastic play!
Magic! Truly! Thank you thank you! I was in my twenties, married with 2 little boys when I was gifted a ticket to see A Chorus Line on Broadway! Imagine… me! I was in love with the music, the dance, the chorus, each and everyone. I didn’t want the sho to end! I didn’t want to leave the theater. I didn’t want for the enchantment to end. I wanted, needed to see what these awesome dancers had done had created… because they had created something special and ever so magical! For a moment I to felt myself a dancer a singer a tiny part of this breathtaking performance. Something that I loved from the first moment I saw it. The clapping stopped, exhausted we quietly left the theatre to return home and carry on with our lives. First thing the following day I went to my local vinyl store to buy the album. By the end of the week hundreds, thousands of us took tap and joined a mature dance and chorus lines at our local YMCAs.! Fabulous! Yes… I was one of them. I didn’t care that my husband and sisters laughed a teased me at the thought of seeing me dance. I didn’t care that I was so terribly uncoordinated and shy it was painful to watch myself try. Over and over I tried dancing wearing my leotards, top hat 🎩 and cane., oh yes and of course my tap shoes. Having the outfit, ceremoniously putting it on I prayed somehow to become one with the music. But as hard as I tried there was nothing to be done but accept I couldn’t be a dancer. For a moment in time while home doing laundry, ironing, cooking, washing dishes, cleaning…I’d put on my dancing shoes and in my bestest possible way imagine being in A Chorus Line! It was the best thing I had done for myself at that point in my life. Several years later once again I was given a ticket to A Chorus Line. …against n I was transported to a magical world. We are so Blessed there are such talented artists in the world who are prepared to make immense sacrifices for their art. I am now 77+ and am wondering where each one who was in my heart film is. I hope they know, knew how much love and respect we had for them. They have helped make this world a safer place by giving of themselves. God Bless! 🎉❤🎩
Omg I danced this choreography and it was the time of my life...maybe I can't dance anymore today but it will remain in me forever and for that I am thankful 🙏
A couple of years ago a friend was doing a crossword puzzle and asked if I knew a song, with 3 letters. I instantly said "One" and started singing the song I saw the play on Broadway I think early '80's and remembered this finale so vividly as we had seats close up. All the golden outfits, the precision choreography was unforgettable. I described it all to my friend. A beautiful memory!😊❤️🌹🇺🇸
I love these Broadway classics. If these songs don't get past the NY critics - they don't stay on Broadway very long. This one of my fav'rites! Thanks for postin'.
I was eighteen years old when I quit university to go to a school of performing arts. My Dad wasn't happy. My Dad's boss took him to see A Chorus Line in New York. When I was struggling my Dad said "We saw a show in NYC and they ALL got hired after hundreds of auditions" and I ended up in the original production of Evita and was in the Broadway production of Grand Hotel. It took me ten years and I was only in the ensemble but A Chorus Line shows what it's like to dream it and make it happen! Was it worth it? In retrospect No. At the time? Yes.
I want to thank the young man who, in 1978/79 insisted that I would not be disappointed if I bought a ticket to this magical musical at the Chicago Shubert. I was waiting in line with friends and made the comment that I did not think A Chorus Line would appeal to me. Wow, was I wrong! What a great production it was so... thanks again, young man!
Such outstanding precision and class using such a large group of dancers is magnificent. A much talented cast, plus a genius choreographer, costume designers, musicians, etc., created this masterpiece making it a big success.
Having seen the original many years ago, and having "One" performed by friends at my retirement party, A Chorus line will always have a special place in my heart.
Saw the original Broadway production of this and saw it many times since. This is a simple but fantastic show, and in the theatre this is a fantastic number--it's hard to capture the power in a video... but thank you for posting it! One of my favorite musicals of all time.
This is the musical that changed my life and got me into dance class finally. Thank you so much for your beautiful music, Marvin. You brought so much joy and beauty into this world.
I know a lot of people don't like the movie, but i'm glad they made this movie it's for all of us that will never get a chance to see it on stage. Love this part of the movie, the dancers are very talented and very good dancers i wish i could see it live, but thats not gonna happen, so i bought the movie personally i like the movie very much, especially the auditions at the first part of the movie
I had the VERY VERY great honor to meet Mr. "A chorus line" himself, Marvin Hamlisch who played at The Bergen Performing Arts Center (Back then it was called "The john harms center for the performing arts") in my hometown of Englewood, NJ, I was moved by the way he could make the piano sing and more. And i wanted to share that with you sincerely. :)
A Chorus Line is a Broadway musical that debuted in 1975, with music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban. It revolutionized musical theater with its innovative format, focusing on the personal stories and struggles of Broadway dancers auditioning for a spot in a chorus line. Set on a bare stage, the musical combines heartfelt monologues, dynamic choreography, and a stunning score, including the iconic number "One" and "What I Did for Love." The show was a massive success, running for over 6,000 performances and winning nine Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Indeed, but the greatest "A Chorus Line" finale was a special, one-time-only live event on Broadway involving, I think 300 former returning choristers, hundreds of whom performed the routine in the aisles to a thunderous standing ovation.
You dont see many movies do you? Horrible reviews, terrible actors and Michael Douglas in a role that almost ruined his career. Songs not sung in order with an actress up in the rafters singing for whom? Maybe you should try Funny Girl, Oliver, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, GiGi, and CHICAGO to name a few-ALL BEST PICTURE OSCAR WINNERS except for Funny Girl which gave Streisand her Best Actress win.
Don’t you all love dancing . Not the best film but my goodness, what a fabulous finale! Keep dancing my friends during the crisis. It makes you feel better. To dance is the best. I did it for a living & my gosh, I wouldn’t change a moment of my life! Penny.
I absolutely love this musical!! I danced this choreography about 2 years ago for our opening number “New York, New York” my opening number theme was broadway! ❤️

seth macfarlane tweeted about this song. at first i was like WAIT THIS IS A REAL SONG???!!! i heard it when i was taking dance class when i was little and its literally been at the back of my mind for like 10 years!!!!!!!!
I love the choreography even more than the song itself (even though the song in and of itself is wonderful). The choreography is simple yet elegant -- subtle, not vulgar, not too sexy, very controlled. Especially the segment from 1:35-1:45. Who was the choreographer? S/he deserves an award for the choreography alone.
Yes!!! My favorite part of the routine AND the song. They visually and audibly made them two groups that kept blending together. I could’ve used another verse of all that, tbh. Lol!
Choreographer is Michael Bennett who also directed the film. Not Bob Fossey who has a similar top hat 🎩 gloves identical step style. Shirley MacLaine does a good vid on different choreographers + boy can she dance !!!!!
I thought this musical so very sad, and a warning to aspiring dancers. All that incredible talent and athleticism and hard work, just to be in a chorus line, indistinguishable from all the other dancers.
For sure! Through the whole production, you get to know them all as the individuals they are, their hopes, dreams, and struggles. You see the grueling ordeal of the audition process, how hard they work, and the physical toll it takes on their bodies. You see who makes it and who doesn't. Then at the end, all of them, even the ones who were weeded out, are there together performing the finale, and every single one is fantastic, and dances their part perfectly, in unison with all the others. And the irony of the words, focussed on this "singular sensation", while the number is a group of dancers and singers, all doing exactly the same thing, not one toe out of line. It's a tough business, as are all the performing arts!
I took Performance Art as a child it enriched my life and furthered my chosen career in political science as a United Nations Diplomat I now am a professional artist in all arts including the art of sciences and humanities I love my life and using my talents and skills from God to better all around the world
Okay, so here we all are on youtube, finally. I am looking for a cast member to tell me how many takes, how long of a day, was it fun, was it painful, what was the hardest part and so on.
I cry for joy whenever I see this because I recall seeing it on Broadway in 1979 and it was so jaw-droppingly fabulous that I thought "I will NEVER see anything better than this!" In person it was so extraordinary and magical.

Chills! That’s the power of Broadway and the caliber of talent in every little step they take… 🎩
seth macfarlane tweeted about this song. at first i was like WAIT THIS IS A REAL SONG???!!! i heard it when i was taking dance class when i was little and its literally been at the back of my mind for like 10 years!!!!!!!!
+Julie J That same tweet led me here.
I love every song in the movie. I can't imagine being able to dance like they do.
We will miss you. Thanks for all the music!
0:10 - Alyson Reed was really good in the film as the female lead, Cassie.
Needed this video in 2022!
What a magnificent chorus!
I have actually never stay at Broadway but, it must be really awesome!

I too saw this on Broadway many years ago....one of my best nights.....right next to seeing Phantom....with Sahra Brightmen and Micheal Crawford!
Okay, so here we all are on youtube, finally. I am looking for a cast member to tell me how many takes, how long of a day, was it fun, was it painful, what was the hardest part and so on.
+Sally Satisfied relay i was not in chorus line but i can tell you the days of shooting would not have been fun by the end results is awesome
2019 still loving this !
Saw it twice at the Pantages Theatre.
This video got like 100 votes and 100000 views thanks to the new episode of House. What a great show. There is no place like House!
