Mr. Thacker is a great guy. I live locally to Radical RC and have had the pleasure of meeting Dave many a times. Enjoy the plane, it should just as well as all of his other expertly designed model kits...
I was about 13 and bought a Stunt Master control line stick build kit. Took months to get it all glued and covered., on a table in the basement that my Mother kept trying to clean off. The stink of the bytrate dope to shrink and tighten up the wing covering smelled up the whole house. Finally got it all put together and mounted a brand new .052 on it. This was the biggest motor and plane I had ever had. Took it off, it went up, looped, and smashed to smithereens, wrecking the plane and 052 eng.
My main past time growing up was building balsa models. I would save my pocket money and purchase one, that i had chosen. I always love the way a model goes together, when you lay the wing spars over the plan and start glueing.I mostly used tissue paper and dope for covering, then painted to match the box photo. Good memories.
I love to build thru the winter months! Came to the hobby later in life, going on 6 yrs now (I'm 58) and I've built 3 - 60 sized models and rebuilt/recovered several other hand-me-downs. Great satasifaction in building, and I agree Nitro / Gassers are far from dead and nothing beats a model running one of those engines. The engines are a whole other hobby in themselves!
My first plane at 16 years of age was a balsa/plywood kit - a Cosmo King 40. It was a lovely trainer which I spent months and many many many dollars building, I had an OS .40 Max engine in it. The wings had a huge amount of dihedral and were joined along the center line with fiberglass and resin. The maiden was done by my local club instructor (Tingalpa MAC) and I remember having a few good flights on her before I tried to do my first loop, with full rates on, from not enough mistakes high!
Needless to say, it ended badly for the Cosmo - however, the .40 and RC gear went on to fly a few dozen more times in half a dozen different models before I gave up the hobby in my late 20s. I got back into it this year (almost 20 years away) and am loving it - flying all electric these days, the Bixler was my first plane back in the hobby and I must say I'm a better pilot now than I was back then :-) Thanks for getting me back into it Bruce, without your videos I don't think I would have :)
Nice little motor, the smallest engine I have is a 0.061 asp wasp at 6 cubic inches. The cox motors were popular for Guillows kits of which I have a few.I agree that building your own model is far more challenging and satisfying especially when it flies. All the best and I hope you get your wings get reinstated as I miss your flying escapades. The people who took them away should be ashamed of themselves.Thank you for all the info, all the best David.
Built my first bulsa plain when I was 10 years old. 33 years ago. Loved how the wing tissue paper hardened when painted. Had a little cox engine but never put the two together because had no access to mechanisms to control it.
Hey Bruce...Like the review! When I was a kid we would buy a balsa glider for $0.75, cut the nose off a bit, mount a .020, split the horz stab and make a working elevator, add a bell crank and fly it "u control". Had tons of fun with it. Have built hundreds of models from kit and scratch over the last 57 years. Arfs have helped the hobby along because most new flyers do not want to spend the time building and its cheeped to buy ready to fly than to build now days! Enjoy your reviews 73's
My last build was in 1980, a 24" Guillows Sopwith camel that I put a Cox .049 Bumble Bee on set up for free flight. Miss those days. I am looking forward to building again
I have built many models over the years but haven't built one since 1983 until I decided to build an old great planes easy sport 40. Just got it finished - wow it reminded me that it's alot more work than an arf lol!
Never built from a kit, but built an F-27 out of balsa when I destryed one of the wings. Was able to cut the other wing to use as templates for wing ribs. One of my fav planes even today after 4years of abuse. Scratch built plenty of planes, but never a kit.
Hey Bruce - when I was in high school that is all the planes I built were from balsa kit. I remember I built a control line Fokker D7 from scratch along with other kits. I loved the WWI planes!
I have build the westerly trainer (1500mm wing span) from scratch some 10 years ago, (found a NOS unbuilt kit from the late 70's on the internet :)). Bloody brilliant, just a bunch of sticks and plates balsa wood, had to do a whole lot of sanding and sculpting (the nose cone was made of 2 or 4 rectangular pieces of balsa, which you had to glue cut and sand in a nose-shape..) Took me a few weeks of constructing, but ended up really smart-looking.
Really looking forward to the building of this plane! I did my first balsa build back in January/February. It was a Minnie Mambo and it is completely scratchbuilt. Powered by a Cox .049......Still need to maiden it. If you think I'm one of the old guys who still scratchbuild, you're wrong. I'm 17 :D
Awesome! Stirred some really old memories. When I started into R/C we bought balsa wood and got plans and cut out the parts ourselves. One of my favorites was the RCM Trainer and Ugly Stik that we flew for many years. Thanks for bringing those memories to mind. I may even have a "COX .010 in one of my junk drawers. didn't know there was a demand for them. :D
G'day Bruce, glad to finally see you back with reviews. Speaking of people building kits, I can very highly recommend a kit from Balsa USA called the Student Trainer. Although I've built plenty of kits, this is a really pretty aircraft but the kit itself is designed to teach people how to build a kit. Those wanting to venture into the wonderful world of kit bashing, check out the Balsa USA web site.
I've built a few balsa kits. I'm actually building one right now. It's a P 51D Mustang that is rubber band powered. I haven't decided if I'm ever going to take it out and fly it. I might give it to one of my nephews or hang it from my ceiling. I really enjoy building kits. I mostly build plastic model cars but I have built the odd plane. I've recently gotten interested in control line and have ordered my first kit. I'm really trying to be a cool uncle.
Hi Bruce, I just viewed an xjet vid of a pylon racer "200mph RC plane spins prop at over 30,000 RPMs", now that is shear power to weight ratio that I have not seen in electrics so far. So naturally I have been looking at buying out somebody that is getting out of the hobby. Anxious to see what the winter months will bring your subscribers. Top of the day to you and family!
i build. and scratch build too. the scratch built models can certainly fly better than any fomie i've seen. working on one now. 3000mm span, twin elctric t-tail for LR fpv. cute little model you have there. i enjoy your videos. thank you. bruce.
I've been in the hobby for about 3 years. I've built 2 Mini-Telemasters from kits, and am currently working on a Tiger 60. I am also finishing a 20-year-old Freedom 20 that has never flown. Still want to see you build the micro stick!
That little stick, from radical is a remake of the ACE R/C Littlest stick (from a design by Fred Reese). I had a Littlest stick with a .049 engine in the past. Flew like a jet landing dead stick at jet speeds. That Mini Stick(LaStick by Fred Reese) will fly just fine on a TD .010 and the same with a PeeWee .020. The trick is to use a small flight battery and small flight gear. Make sure you have a subtantial push rod to the elevator, we had a lot of trouble with high speed flutter.
Hi Bruce, I've scratch built a 40 size stick from plans I downloaded from the 'net and it flies great, and i'm currently in the middle of scratch building a 1912 Blackburn Mono plane type D.
I got a little engine yeeeeeears ago I remember bringing it to school to show my shop teacher in 8th grade I’m 34 now, never knew what it was but after watching this it’s deft the Cox .01 I’m actually holding it right now it was never ran I put oil in it so it would stay healthy
Ah! those were the days Bruce when we cut it all out from a set of plans with a hobby knife, Lasers were things we read about in science fiction magazines, my first R/C kit a Keelcraft Super 60 was a box of balsa & bits & a set of plans you worked the rest out with a pencil.:)
Great idea to documeng the simplest possible proper balsa build and highlight the standard techniques and time spent. Here is an idea: How about keeping a timer running during the build process. Doesn't have to be anything more fancy than a wrist watch timer. Then you could comment on time spent throughout the video, or edit it in as text. I always wonder how much time I have really spent at a build.
Im 15 and i love building and designing small to large balsa planes kits and sratch build also lucky i have been trying to get my hands on a .010 for 5 years now
I Love Scrach building, and when i can i copy planes just by watching a video, and my eyes and most of time i actially get it right. I have started RVJ some times ago, but i have been out for Holidays, and just come back. Its hard to build anything during the summer, but i will try...:-) Love ur shows...:)
Dope!... no not you Bruce, I remember my first kit like it was 35 years ago.. oh wait a sec, it was! We had to trace the parts from a template onto the balsa sheets and cut them out by hand then construct the plane and cover it in special paper that required a doping liquid to shrink it. Oh those were the days of getting a buzz from that stuff, I think I can still smell it now LOL. Laser cut/Pre cut, that was a miracle when it first came out. I know, lets start with a single block of balsa.LOL
Bruce, Great video. Not the first time I've commented, but wanted to say that I really enjoy your videos. I have built... a Goldberg Eagle 2 40-size trainer, a Goldberg Super Chipmunk 60 size sport flyer, and a PT-40. I have a Great Planes 46-size Learjet waiting to be built. I miss the old kits! Looking forward to your video on this build.
Brice please continue with what you start. So many videos you have said you will do but never actually do. Or even do a part 2. Excellent videos mate but just continue through with them
The TeeDee .010 is a sweet little motor. I got one a while back and fly it occasionally in a freeflight single blade helicopter contraption. Search on RUclips for "McCutchen flies again" and you will see it in action. The noise the little TeeDee makes is terrific, like an angry hornet!
iv built one rubber band balsa kit. however i got stuck with the paper/dope. did not know what dope was so i gave up and just made it a static display. i do have the bug wanting to build more balsa kit. i will have to try the light plastic cover so im gonna order a iron and some plastic and a kit.. i would like to learn about nitro/gas motors.. im new to the hobby, so my only experience so far is just building mini quads etc. so i want to grow. so lots to learn. i hope i can find your build video. :) i have only seen 3 of your gas nitro videos so you mostly do electric. but that is ok since im learning so much from your videos.. you rock bruce.. here is to us team nanny flyers :D
if your not going to use a nitro engine and use it for rubber band power...mix white glue 50/50 with water and brush it over the tissue paper and as it dries and shrinks...it works great, that's what I always did for my rubber band powered models
NJ UNDERGROUND thanks for the tip. i did end up buying basically the same thing.. its called EZ Dope. i paid 12.00 for it . your method would be much cheaper.. i will be sure to remember in the future. rock on from az.
They have a coil of nichrome wire in the top of the head, that glows red hot when connected to a battery. You clip the battery on to start it, but once running you pull off the connector.
after you mash up the foam eflight planes use the internals to make the old guillows kits rc... it works great... i mashed up a few eflight wacos .. so i built the guillows puss moth.. and a few others... the puss moth is such a treat to fly
I did build a "stick" when I was 11 (a soviet distribution model biplane where parts never matched so I had to re-arrange the slots on every part). Oh good old days.
Built kits back in the 90s when I flew before but since getting back they have all been ARTF foamies. Also built from plans, shock, horror. Keep the faith Bruce.
Hey, Bruce, there is plenty small rubber band WWII balsa kits around, which I'm betcha still have instructions on how to make it a control line powered by exactly a power plants you have in your hands. I never build Duma's kits, but Paul Guillow still makes Guillow models in a good "old" Massachusetts of United States. Both vendors have a wide variety of kits ranging from 17 inches all the way to 40. Frankly once I discovered "flying wood" then "static plastic" was a dead hobby for me then.
Most the planes I have in my hangar I've built myself and I'm fairly new to the hobby. My fav kit so far is my super chipmunk from Goldberg (prior to them selling to Great Planes).
Count me in on kit building and from "scratch" using plans....I do also like the EPP models as they have helped me learn to fly R/C.....didnt do much flying in the past but alot of building....I think I am an average builder....I wish some of the scale stick built ARF's were kitsets!!....I spread my model budget over the likes of HobbyKing, local and USA Hobby shops...Rgds...Laurie
Off topic. Installing LIFE battery in trs. what voltage should I reprogram my spectrum 7 low voltage alarm to? .(greenmountainrc) source. Why can't I charge the LIFE at 1.8 amps with life charger as long as I observe polarity, using charging jack on transmitter?
Hi there Bruce nice vid once again.....the world is a weird place... i got all the money in the world can buy any plane out there but unfortunately dont have the time to fly. Already got 3 heli's and 3 planes and hardly flew 2 hours in one year .. and there you are with all the time and space in the world but hardly any money....pfff wish New zealand wasnt that far from Belgium otherwise we could make a deal. Keep on making those vids.... that's just about the only taste of this hobby i get.
i started flying rc when the only planes werefrom kits it was fun to see your plane fly that you built the only problem was when you rekitted it because it would never be as beautiful as a virgin model never broken used to fly .40 ci 56" wing span still have some on the storage rack in the basement
ahh, forgot to tell i have started 4 balsa kits and only one finished. the finished is a 2m/vs sailplane. The reason i have not finshed them all is bad instructions, missing instructions or the instructions take for granted that the builder have the right knowledge before strarting the build. I also have two kits unopened, a FockeWulf and a Spitfire from Ripmax.
I'm 15 now butt when I was 12 I built my first plane the Gentle Lady, and when I was 13 I built a peanut scale plane. I also have a small engine collection.
@RCModelReviews G'day mate... Great Clip. Lovely bit of Engineering. How many spare Glow-Heads d' y' have for it ? Yeah, in 1967 I bought a Kit for a Rubber-Powered Stick with Sheet Balsa Tail, & a Tissue-Covered, Built-up Wing. It went well, but Perkins Paste to stick the Paper on, & Water to shrink it, & the Open Oven in the Slow Combustion Stove to dry it...; meant it was warped to buggary. Looked like shit, & flew worse. But, I was only 6.., & I did get better. ;-) Ciao !
I have never build form a kit. I did build a balsa glider from scratch! I think hat counts :P The Medicine Man 60'' glider is a great easy build balsa glider, I can reccomend it to everybody!
You said check your Xjet channel for more info on a new video about your flying card fiasco. I didn't see any new videos there. Or the video you said where you would show that CTL Plane flying.
Can you rank the logos from 1st to 100th logo in your choice range. We want to see a video with 100 logos over 300 seconds to a good bit of original music.
The TD .010 doesn't make much noise, but its really high pitched, it runs at such high rpm it screams. I used Missile Mist in my Baby Bees, and also my .010, it was 25% nitro, can you even get Missile Mist any more? I had a TD .010 that I bought new, I had run it but never put it in a plane, I had a major health problem in 2000, couldn't work, and sold all my RC stuff, I think I sold that .010 for $10 US. It was way too cheap!
once I bought a kit, me and my dad put it together from scratch 14 years ago :) Engine was methanol based. The problem with those engines is that its not really healthy for the balsa plus you have to clean the plane and engine after every flight thats why now I stuck to electric engines
i'm a huge fan of scratch built foamies, lots of REALLY AWESOME designs floating around that fly great (some kickass looking futuristic star fighter plans on rc groups for instance).... but i have never, literally never touched balsa. not sure why, just seems too fragile and expensive
Mr. Thacker is a great guy. I live locally to Radical RC and have had the pleasure of meeting Dave many a times. Enjoy the plane, it should just as well as all of his other expertly designed model kits...

Holy cow, I'm going to look through all my stuff to see if I still have one of my old teedee .010's!
I used to have several black widows for my Sophisticated Ladies.
I still have the electric pods for them
Ah! those were the days Bruce when we cut it all out from a set of plans with a hobby knife, Lasers were things we read about in science fiction magazines, my first R/C kit a Keelcraft Super 60 was a box of balsa & bits & a set of plans you worked the rest out with a pencil.:)
Great idea to documeng the simplest possible proper balsa build and highlight the standard techniques and time spent. Here is an idea: How about keeping a timer running during the build process. I build at least 20 kits, including small rubber powered, some sailplanes, and the last one was the Great Planes RV-4, love to build from balsa.

Transferring a plan to balsa and cutting out the bits by hand is real model building.

Great! You are welcome to do so!
Cute little engine!
...question... do you have some place available for indoor flying?
I have built the mini stick kit from Hobbyking, was quite a lot of fun building it from tge laser cut parts...
@Bruce , when will you finally build the radical rc kits ?
I love the idea of a build video
Hi there
i built a model from plans i got off a mate i cut all the wood myself built it and through it fly's great. great videos
Off topic. Installing LIFE battery in trs. what voltage should I reprogram my spectrum 7 low voltage alarm to? .(greenmountainrc) source. Why can't I charge the LIFE at 1.8 amps with life charger as long as I observe polarity, using charging jack on transmitter?
Hi . I would love to see you build a balsa plane as that is what I would like to do in the near future.
Love your channel keep up the good work :)
Keep on making those vids.... that's just about the only taste of this hobby i get.
a guillows lancer would be a neat old timer plane for the littlest cox motor.
I'm 22 and I love building balsa models, hate covering them though...
Im actually just building my first stick - a Guillows Focke Wulf FW190. Hopefully I will convert it to RC. So please do show how you build the stick.
Would love to see a build video of the tiny stick!
i started flying rc when the only planes werefrom kits it was fun to see your plane fly that you built the only problem was when you rekitted it because it would never be as beautiful
as a virgin model never broken used to fly .40 ci 56" wing span still have some on the storage rack in the basement
A build video on that plane be great. ive never built one like that.
I like everything I see here! Subscribed
ahh, forgot to tell i have started 4 balsa kits and only one finished. the finished is a 2m/vs sailplane.
@RCModelReviews
G'day mate...
But, I was only 6.., & I did get better. ;-) Ciao !
what do you do if the glow plug breaks?
I have one off thoese Black Widow engines, very noisy engine :-)
I have never build form a kit.
I did build a balsa glider from scratch!
I think hat counts :P
The Medicine Man 60'' glider is a great easy build balsa glider, I can reccomend it to everybody!
You said check your Xjet channel for more info on a new video about your flying card fiasco. I didn't see any new videos there. Or the video you said where you would show that CTL Plane flying.
do those small engines have a spark plug?
You can make it so you have quarter to half of a turn of the fuel screw by attaching a peace of metal and having it push rod ....
Do quadcopter count?
I have a laser cutter and design my own frames :)
What is the maximum wing span for a cox 020 to power please
Looks fun!
I have not built a plane yet but I have designed and 3d printed a mini frame for a quadcopter that I built.
What song did you sing, to get the motor?
;)
Can you rank the logos from 1st to 100th logo in your choice range. We want to see a video with 100 logos over 300 seconds to a good bit of original music.
thanks for the heads up
I bought a pico stick, it was ARF, not too simple to build. However quite simple to build.
Bruce...
How do I donate to your channel?
Do scratch builds count? Cois I've built them
I miss flying and building 0.049 free flight and gas model planes.
i built a GreatPlanes Sprit Elite and a Graupner kleine UHU and my own DLG from scratch
Good on you, no point in keeping it - put the cox to use!
i'm a huge fan of scratch built foamies, lots of REALLY AWESOME designs floating around that fly great (some kickass looking futuristic star fighter plans on rc groups for instance)....
but i have never, literally never touched balsa. not sure why, just seems too fragile and expensive
No balsa models but I have Dollar tree foam board kits from Flitetest and from RCPowers.
hey bruce im building a Topflite p-47 84" Thunderbolt and converting it to brushless
Radical RC needs a web redesign, something I used to do as a hobby. Looks like the web from 1994.
I want to see the Tee Dee .010 on the really really small stick
I'd pay 4X HK prices to buy my stuff from RadicalR/C. Fortunately, I don't have to!
i did a 40 size trainer from plans.
