- It's unusual that 3 motors drive the prop on this mini WL Toys Electric Cessna! I was looking for a platform plane to run my tiny, Cox .020, 2 stroke, Nitro Engine on, and this became it. See it run and if it worked. Thanks for stopping by. ~Dave

I love how you addressed the whole "hovering power needed" that kids dont get... well... I was once a kid... flying plywood kits instead of balsa... using an o.s 40 la when people actually used 46ax 55ax on the same plane... and there I was... doing all the scale pattern flights and acrobatics... lots of dead stick landings since that lil engine was too far gone and good fuel was expensive... but then I made my own and used acetone as nitro... worked like a charm... cold or not it would goooo... Im glad we have people who think alike hahahah love ur vids. God bless you. I hope one day we can meet. I bet you got loads of stories to tell
Right on. Wow, what a story! Great to hear. My stories are all on my channel from Military, models, and some weird stuff.

Hey Dave, thanks for the great memories flying with Cox engines :)
Right on. Thanks for watching and commenting, and for being a long time subscriber. Stay well and safe.
Thank you for taking the extra trouble to record, edit and post this, instead of just doing it.
I like your removable Cox mount, and was delighted to hear it running, though I recognise that the sound only seems pleasant to those of us who have formed an association with this sound and fun!
That dead spot on the stock radio is appalling.
Thanks so kindly and glad you like it.
The sound of that engine sure brings back some great memories!👍
I am happy to hear that. Thanks so kindly.
That’s cool!
Thanks so kindly!
This reminds me of converting old 24" span Guillow's rubber band FF kits into 0.020 powered UC planes and flying them around in the hangar between lessons back in the '90's. I remember in particular the C170 flying very well and pretty close to scale.
Right on. A great story. Thanks.
I have this exact plane, I got it when this model first came out. But when they did, the 3 motors came with plastic gears and they always broke... glad to see they've upgraded them with brass gears!
Right on. Thanks and happy flying.
Hi Dave, what a beautiful Cox 020, still runs great. I miss a lot all my Cox engines running, thanks for the video and specially video filming crew, Mrs Herbert.
Thanks very kindly. Glad y9ou enjoyed it and thanks to the shout out to my wife. I appreciate you.
Man what an increase in power! Thanks for the trip back in time. You're definitely an Ole Pro! Thumbs up video ~John
Hi John and thanks so much. We cannot forget history, so I try to take us back now and then. I appreciate you.
Burr! that nitro really makes your stick finger cold in wintertime! Flew a "Q-Tee" with a stock Cox .049 for years up in Michigan. Bought it at the swap meet during Toledo. Came with a two servo "brick" and a two channel EK Ligitrol transmitter. It flew so well people would offer to buy it from me after seeing it fly. One day I finally gave in. 😮
I have always enjoyed your talent and experience.Keep on keeping on!
I'm trying for sure. Thanks so kindly, Dave. I appreciate you.
Absolutely Brilliant !!!

Great video, and SO good to see these little Castor Slingers live again!
In the 1980's, the Cox Centurions and Sportavias RULED in our little group of flyers, They were only rivaled in the .049 size by the Cox/Sanwa "Q-Tee" parasols, which often flew using an engine rotated from one of the Centurions.
Sunday afternoons at our local airport saw us flying from a dead-end ramp, much to the entertainment of the local Airport Curmudgeons, who often yelled tips and advice from their benches next to the office.
As the Centurions age away "the shine on the apple" they were often subject to assorted experiments, and I actually towed one into the air using a thread running from the Robart bomb release on my Sig Kadet. I'd hit the release, and the little foamer would glide down from altitduee, trialing its tow thread.
Great memories...and great hearing the sound from these little monsters!
Thank You,
Kim

Hi David. Thanks so kindly. I appreciate you and Semper Fi!
Brilliant Dave, just how it should be, thank you.

Man, this little thing rips!. I got started in the hobby around 2002 when nitro was still king, so naturally I prefer nitro over electric. I love seeing electric to nitro conversions. Cox engines were definitely before my time but a lot of the older guys would bring their cox powered planes out to the field on occasion for the nostalgia. Awesome video, hope to see more on this little guy.
Thanks so kindly. Well if it ever gets warmer here, I hope to fly more, so please stay tuned. God bless.

That was really cool! I love your ingenuity.
Thanks very much, I appreciate you.
Thanks for the awesome video! I may have to build one of these with the old cox engine I have sitting around
Very nice Dave! Reminded me of my maiden of a 1100mm P51 on 4s battery. It was so fast I had severe anxiety that I might crash it. I only flew it about 4 times then I sold it because it was so scary to fly. I like 3D airplanes the best. Slow and Low! Thank you for the vid and your expertise over the years. The tiny gold pistons were cool! As always great piloting. About 12 years ago I modded a Horizon 3 channel UMX Champ with the motor, esc, mechanical, and electronic parts from my crashed UMX Beast. Took the dihedral out of the wings, added the ailerons and made it ‘Super Champ’! It flies better than my factory UMX super Cub.
Right on. Thanks for the great story and thanks for commenting. I appreciate you.
Nice job Dave. You should put a banana sticker on the wing for those high-g maneuvers :). LOL
Haha. Right on! I did strap the wing though, so it is better.
Man, the speed difference between the two was like night & day, wow! $60 bucks a gallon? And I thought diesel was expensive! 😂 Great flying as always sir, Semper Fi.
Thanks a lot Scott. Yep, it cranks and that was only on 15%. My next flights will be on 20% Nitro and will go even faster. The higher the Nitro, the higher the Price, that is for sure. Semper Fi and be safe. We are buried here.
Hi Dave, RUclips automatic captioning shows [music] while the Cox is running, and it is TOTALLY right. The RTF Cox Cessna Centurion was my forbidden dream back in the early '80s, but my dad thought the imported toy to be a bit too expensive, and that building model planes from scratch was more educational. Great video, greetings from Italy.
Wow. That’s music to my ears. Lol Cool story. Thanks and be safe over there.
Hi night flyer. You should get a Radio Master Tx16s mk2 with 4-1 module it will fix the dead spot problem. :) Yes it will bind to that plane.
I have one. I couldn’t get it to bind to it using the WLToys setup. If you have some better idea how to do this, let me know.
@@NightFlyyer Did you fallow other videos?
@@rcrotorfreak but there is no protocol for this Park radio. I have the latest 4 in 1 software installed too. I have made vids about this Tx16s radio and use it mostly for my direct drive helis. I was sure it could bind to anything. I have spent hours. If you have a link to tell the protocol to this toy radio please post it here. But it’s no big deal. I can fly it fine as is. Thanks.
@@NightFlyyer Hi so I did some research. Wltoys f949 is the cessna just as you'rs. There a youtube video. Which he bind to a Flysky radio FS i6. So he disable 2a. So I would say tx16s or any other radio with 4-1 that use opentx or edge tx would set on flysky not flysky 2a. Either way if it just exact as you'rs the receiver board. Then it be using Flysky protocol. :) Title is Flysky Fs i6 transmitter bind with Wltoys f949 I would love to get this plane stick a cox 20 :) ruclips.net/video/zsKoJ1iGIAY/видео.html
Thanks Dave. That reminds me of an Ace Rc pylon racer kit called GLH "goes like heak". It took an 049. It flew just like a bumblebee like yours. Lol Any chance you might be at The Joe Nall event in Woodruff SC in May?
Sorry, I will not be making it. Medical and other reasons are keeping us home. Thanks.
Great video Mr. Herbert! Been a while since we have seen a Cox motor on something, and it worked great. I was afraid those wings were going to fold up when you were pulling those G's lol!!
Right on. Well, I was worried about that as well, with the extra weight, so I put Tape on the bottom side of the wing, to keep it from folding, and it worked....so far. LOL. Thanks much, Steve.
Wow, that thing goes like stink! I have to build something for my pee wee's. Love it thanks for sharing

Yep and a big storm on the way now. Strange weather everywhere. Thanks and blessings to you as well.
Hi Dave,
That .020 brought back memories. Never had one, but plenty of the .049's. My last .049 powered RC plane was the Honker by Dave Thornburg. That was a nimble little DIY plane. Even built his Doodler, which was decent at soaring. It was a kit sold by Southwest Sailplanes. Stayed up for half an hour one time. Those were the days before the auto accident that wrecked my back.
Glad to hear that story, Don. Thanks so kindly and stay well.
Dave, I still have a Carl Goldberg Cessna 1/2 A Skylane that was one of my 1st R/C trainers with a Cox .049 on it, set up with just rudder only. I was going to add elevator but I never did. It was a lot of fun to fly, and you couldn't beat the little bit of fuel it burned. I still have a few cox engines to.
Wow. I had one of those as well. Great plane, but I had an elevator on mine. Thanks and stay well.
I don’t care how much electric is objectively better nitro is cool. I grew up on the sweet smell of .049 and I feel for modern internet iPhone kids who will never know it.
I'm with you on that for sure, as I fly both as well. Thanks kindly, and check out my other Nitro videos if you get a chance.
Uffff amazing , thanks for sharing!

I just found a perfect .49 with a 6” prop! Think this would work on a Genle Lady with a wing pod?
Great. If I remember correct, a Gentle Lady was a glider and with a wing pod, it should work great with this engine. Thanks and good luck.

Definitely moves right along on the nitro motor! a lot less weight without the battery for the electric motors. Dave, it seems like there was another manufacturer of nitro motors of small nitro motors back in the day. Was it Wen possibly? Thanks! great video!
Well, the same battery is still in it along with the motors, as something needed to power the radio. But for sure it really scoots. Wen Mac made .049s as well, but were harder to start. Thanks kindly, Doug.
@@NightFlyyer I had a hovercraft with a .049 Wen Mac motor! It was definitely harder to start!

@@NightFlyyer You're welcome! 💚
So cool.
Only an rc champ pilot could bring it back in 1 piece, with no throttle control & bang bang controls.
I figured this rc system has under 100m range too, which is pointless for a plane. So thinking about building rc heli or rc bike from its rc system
3 motor design is actually reverse redundant too ie if 1 motor fails, the other motors having to run dead motor make other motors overheat & fail too. Nonetheless it is a value for money parts pack.
Did you use 15% nitro in this 0,20? Idk my babe bees run pretty good but i just can`t get de 0.20 and 0.10 to run longer then a few seconds.
I run only Torko 20% fuel in all my nitro engines. 20% should work better. The Higher the nitro the better it will stay running. Open the needle 2.5 turns and start from there.
@@NightFlyyer Okay. I will try it with 2 1/2 i mostly started at 3 1/2. The proplem with the nitro is, that here in germany I can't buy anything with more then 16% and when I mix in more oil the nitro % is even lower. But I will see if I can get something with more nitro. Thank you :)
Okay, quick update its running now on like 12% nitro. I forgot to install the little spring between tank and engine 🙃. I still will try to get some fuel with at least 25% so i have around 20% left after mixing it with oil.
@@fliegerdefunes7758 It really should run fine on that. Use Synthetic oil instead of Castor and it should run fine. Let me know how it goes, or post you link to your video in the comments here. Thanks.
Btw I got my hands on a cessna centurio with cox for a few euros but sadly its pretty heavy and it won't fly like that. I will see if i can get the 3 tons of fiberglass out of there and replace the giant servos with something lighter.
The people at Cox must have been all deaf! How could they continue to make engines that were so noisy? Their "attempts" at mufflers were a joke - no meaningful quietening with way less power. With engines making such a din, it certainly did put the hobby in a good light.
My wife used to work there and she still hears at 78, and me too. But loud as they were, they set my career in aviation in motion, so I owe them. If you look on the Coxengines.ca website, you will see they are very valuable now. You may enjoy my latest PT 19 video. Thanks so much. ruclips.net/video/BU0z7ddwslY/видео.html

Congratulations you just made the first 3D airplane from Toys R Us
Not really 3d stunt capable, but flies good. Thanks.
Did your Cessna have a spar in the wing? I had one of these and so did a friend and the issue with both of them was the extremely flexible wing. It would fold under high speeds and the plane would plummet, and it would straighten back out when you slowed down! I was amazed to see yours not doing that despite the added weight, great video and I honestly wondered what one of these engines would do on a foamie!
No spar. I put strapping tape on the bottom of the wing, so that would not happen and it worked. It's a fun little plane, but wish it was warmer so I could really fly it. Thanks so kindly.
Nice!
Thanks very kindly. I appreciate you.
Yep, 3-motors gives it a lot of zip, just like when we put a rocket on your scimitar, but your nitro engine was the best...! Oorah
Yes for sure. That rocket "Threw" my Simitar when it ignited for sure. Those were fun days, Bud. Thanks much.
Is that huge dead band maybe needed for the auto stabilizer to correctly recognize "let go" sticks, with likely not very tight tolerances at this price point?
And this was what you meant by "semi-proportional"?
It would drive me crazy, I even don't like too agressive expo for this reason.
NO potentiometers. Just on /off, like the old days of pulse modulation flying. Its a pain, but I worked around it. I never use expo, even though I worked for Kraft R/C systems, who invented it. LOL. Thanks.
@@NightFlyyer Thats an interesting combination ... it DOES have proportional servos though (but with this 5 pin connectors it ALSO looks very retro, with the electronics in the receiver and the servos just a motor and potentiometer) if I see it correctly, and a remote trim?
So they "just" cheaped out on the joysticks in the transmitter?
@@VintageTechFan Yep.
Fantastic job on the converting to it to nitro Dave and on the flight as well with that deley issues your having on that radio that come with that plane will you be using your new Radiomaster TX16S instead for it?
Yes, I may switch over, but I always review with the stock setup. I am used to flying strange things, so sloppy I am comfortable with and deal with it. Your right, I will probably now Bind my Radiomaster to it and see how that goes. Thanks so much.
@@NightFlyyer Cool👍👍👍👍👍👍
O what memories
Glad to hear it Tim. Thanks so kindly.
So on these cox planes how do u land and control the throttle or do you not? lol. Does it just run at the proper RPM and you control the lift and stuff? How do u stop it after landing just let it run outta gas or grab it or what? Like I said I have never had one and I found one in great shape at a flea market for 18.00 and now I’m hooked so I gotta learn. I remember my uncle having one in the early 80’s and hen I was a kid and always thought it was soooo cool.
This is not a Cox plane. Its a modern electric that I converted. To modify it , I added the nitro engine. These tiny engines run wide open at constant speed. The elevator on this R/C plane is controlled by the transmitter's elevator stick and the rudder makes it turn. When it runs out of fuel, you must glide in for a landing, as shown. Good luck.
I think I have one. Not sure if it's what your looking for......
Have what? The engine or the Cox Cessna Centurion? Thanks.
@NightFlyyer both. I will will open the attic and see if I still have it. I know I had one. Never flew it and I'm unsure of it's condition. It was given to me. If I still have it, I will reach out to you and send it your way.

@@hakology Me too!! Thanks again.
That is refreshing, because I have zero respect to electric flying. To me it is a shortcut, a lazy persons way to get flying models without the hardship of real engines. More like this, back to the real RC that drones have almost destroyed by being troublemakers.
I totally agree. Thanks much.
I just found one of these Cessna centurion just like you have pictured at a flea market still in the box with all the instructions and everything for 18.00 bucks. Just needed cleaned up. Took the engine apart and the piston and everything was in freakin great shape. I’m thinking about converting it to an electric or an actual nitro motor not sure yet. I will attach a pic.
This electric plane did not have an engine. It has 3 motors that are electric. I converted it to the Cox engine. They didn't come with it. Not sure what you got, but good luck and happy flying.
DC Bambi was the smallest production engine not the cox 0.10
Not true! The engine on this plane is a .020. I never said it was the smallest. If you want to see the true smallest, watch my Flying Shop rag video. ruclips.net/video/Q7MwFVHCRpY/видео.html It has a .010 engine on it, made by Cox and still is and was the smallest production engine in the world. The DC Bambi is 0.15cc and is also diesel and was Manufactured in England in the late 1950's.
