If you have other things to do besides RUclips, you won't be able to become big on that platform anymore. Seeing our channel in the middle of the video was quite the surprise! Very cool of you to share these insights with everyone. In our six years here it's certainly been a bit of a roller coaster as the algorithm has gone through changes. I can only imagine how many factors the YT team has to consider. It's a good reminder to simply pursue what you love and give the best effort you can. Trying to ride a trend might work in the short term, but the world invariably moves on to something new.
I don't watch TV because it is expensive, not because the content is bad. Which it is, but I do like watching it sometimes. But its not worth the 150 a month price tag.

Yep, which is stupid because the big companies already had access to youtube. What gets youtube money is views to sell adspace and data. What gets those views is good content. What gets youtube the best content is giving as open of a platform as possible for the most people to be able to compete with the giants on a level playing ground. This will only result in a decline in youtube's traffic as they lower the bar by making the conditions preferable to giants who release inferior content.

Well I don't mind big companies like Nintendo, Sony, etc. coming to RUclips to promote their games and stuff, that makes sense, a lot of people use the site so that to me is passable. What I outright hate is how RUclips has, as you said son of ares, started to move away from the thing that made it cool, which is the creators like mat pat, pewdiepie, etc.(again) that make content that people like. I didn't come to RUclips to basically watch TV, I came to watch interesting fun videos
2018: problem solved by the Community!!!! Creators can take vacation for a week!! Because the audience care about their stars health and understand that everyone needs a break sometimes....

Civil Car Back before you could make money on YT... many people(especially from the OG PC days...) were just fine seeing a new upload once a week or so. This was a website made for SHARING content, a community. Not to give people jobs. So I , nor others wouldnt have even met those people you mention, we wouldve simple been satisfied with how YT was. You are right. That is what is want to do, yet it want to give power to the creators as well. That is why there is a button called "Donate to this Channel". I believe the best way to promote the creators we like is to click that button or go to "Patron" where one donate money for them to continue what they like.

It sounds doable but you'd have to be really creative and cut back on editing at the same time to make entertaining content. Say goodbye to everything that's even remotely educational, allot of quality content takes time to produce and it's just nice and organic. How many people can work with these constraints?

i have a decent fanbase - it's tough to maintain and grow when youtube doesn't even tell any of them about videos I post - plus the random unsubscribe thing doesn't help. Patreon is super nice, but channel growth = sustainability. Guess I just need to hope for the best.

nah thats just part of it most youtubers have now gone into into this "ClickBait" bandwagon effect you can upload the most random crap and walk away with views just b/c of the overly hyped title. It makes other youtubers that actually upload content the traditional way with factual stuff demoralized with less viewers. Big youtubers are the least likely to be affected by this. Bounces may occur, but the fact remains... they are still making money in a cheap way and try to be enthusiastic behind it. Click bating/Content leaks is a trend in today's time maybe not in the music, or review genres of youtbe, but its everywhere on the gaming, movie side. I had to unsub 7 ppl b/c I grew tired of it. When I see videos like Pewdiepie gonna delete his channel 1st thing that comes to mind is that is complete BS. This guy is making thousands of dollars every month probably even more its crap like that big youtubers can get away with in terms of click baiting. Would you cut off your thousand dollar investment after achieving 50 million subs?

Your findings line up with mine nearly perfectly; Audience Retention is far less important than Total Minutes Watched, likes and comments do very little, and not making daily long form content makes growing much more difficult. What I would add into this is RUclips's push for Total Session Watch Time which is resulting in an explosion of children's content as well as the Click through rate receiving increased importance. I loved your analogy of the treadmill continuing to increase in speed.

What's sad is that after all this, RUclips is still a company and like every other company, no matter how good or bad they are to the people working for them, they will still care first and foremost about their profit. It's the blood of every company that keeps them running.
What makes me upset is that people are upset. I know youtube is where a lot of people make a living, but youtube itself is a business that cares less about creative rights and more about the video views from creators. RUclips has always been fickle, going back and forth on what gets you a copyright strike and what doesn't, and there's so much drama and poison there that I wouldn't want to make it big and garner the attention of the things and types of youtubers that I hate. RUclips should be a hobby, not a job, especially because it is its own business that hardly has any relationship with those who partner with it and make their own content. It's a weird quagmire that I enjoy being a part of from afar, especially knowing that all the drama doesn't affect me personally.
RUclips has become "too big to fail" I think. The people complaining that RUclips isn't acting for the viewers/youtubers are the same who think a picture posted on Internet is free of Copyright rights. "going back and forth on what gets you a copyright strike and what doesn't" Well, that's probably the only thing RUclips can't control at all : if they don't want to be sued according to DMCA, they must remove any content asked by the right-holding companies... So their rules have been created according to limits given by producers.

JTEgaming yep it's nearly impossible to get big now, it's been that way for a few years. Unless you have a really cool and unique idea that someone *has never done before* it's nearly impossible.
Make a company, basically you need way more then one person for your channel to be successful, because one person trying to put out the amount of content required to stay retentive is nearly impossible. My channel isn't monetized and I only put out videos when it's what I want to do, I'm not looking to make money or get popular I just want to share my fun with others when I have it. That's one of the ways you got to approach making content, do you want to make money or have fun, or make a lot less money and have fun.
I've had my channel for a while now and my videos are decent quality too. But i'll never blow up because it's just me, in college and no time to create a ton of content to keep up with demand. I'll probably never be super big but that's okay. I record game play with my best friends because we're hilarious! I edit because I find video editing fun (Except for editing my own voice *Eww*). I upload to RUclips (a magical place that I spend a lot of my life) because I hope for people to watch my content and maybe get some giggles out of it. I don't care if I become huge. Would I like it? SURE! But who wouldn't? No matter what happens just keep creating because its what YOU enjoy. That's what every one like you, like me, and everyone like us must do.
It's impossible to "start something popular" even in the real world. If you WANT to be popular, you will make the same thing than the other popular peoples, right? But in this case, why bother with you if the popular one is doing exactly the same? It's like thinking "there are already 6 restaurants in my street so i will create a 7th" and only AFTER that, the owner understand he can't get the needed customers to make the business work : they are already in the other restaurants. And if you have an original idea... well it will be so original that nobody will search for it in the search tab. The popular channels weren't popular just by doing videos and simply waiting the money to come, they did what they wanted to do when they noted it wasn't already on RUclips. Else you are a professional and doing many advertising through your network of relations or your money, else you will need to be lucky ;)
They've never really been that good, just the memes and trends of the year with some crap music playing over it. They decline in quality on a yearly basis.
Adrien Arnaldi He forgot to mention that most big RUclipsrs never bother to implement a proper SEO. Pewdiepie for an example, he never bother to write any proper description beside copy paste links. If you have TubeBuddy or something can see other channels video tags. His tags are super lazy at best with only less then 10 tags are implemented. If he actually put some effort on his SEO, he could double his views.
We should not have to rely on SEO to find good content. Otherwise it would just be big corps with craploads of SEO experts getting their stuff to the frontpage.
I was once solely a consumer of Mat's actual theories about games but there's something about turning 20 that sparks your sudden interest in the mechanism that lies below. As English is not my first language, had I watched this some years before the whole video would just fly over me and I'd click away after the first 3 minutes. I really appreciate Mat crunching numbers for us and I'm sure this will stay relevant until RUclips implemented another new algorithm (which by the time this is written they might have). It's a shame though now that with this algorithm, channels with videos that have a long span of relevance will lose over channels that update videos daily regardless of its content.

Watching youtube everyday and don't freakin care about about big companies with thousand employees. RUclips forgot who's watching videos. We don't come here to just look at annoying vids. We come here to watch people we like to watch. Want to remove what we like and kill the channels we follow? Go ahead, and when you will be as deserted as older video platforms, don't come crying to us. RUclips was great BEFORE.
If a lot of big youtubers disappear, a lot of people will stop watching youtube. And maybe then that will wake them up and say "Oh hey! Maybe we should change it back!"
One thing I'm not so sure about in this video is RUclips wanting to feature what's current. I'm getting way more older videos recommended to me than ever on the homepage and it's confusing.
"Current" doesn't necessarily mean "new". In this context, it means what is "popular". These older videos, for whatever reason, are resurfacing and catching people's attention, even if they're from 2+ years back. Maybe some reddit user or 4chan topic showed it off recently, caught their users attention, and that got hooked by youtube's algorithm and was propelled into the recommended section. First for users with similar interests, and if that works, then into the recommended section of users that are even partially interested in particular tags. There's any number of unseen reasons for this to happen, but short of working with youtube directly, we'll never be sure of what those reasons are.

Watch pewdiepie's video, he said from the suggested he gets 31% of views, but a lot of those videos are old ones, before youtube fucked up big. Recent videos have like 0.1% views from suggested, so youtube suggests old videos so: 1. New videos don't get a lot of views 2. Seem like everything's normal

Yep, which is stupid because the big companies already had access to youtube. What gets youtube money is views to sell adspace and data. What gets those views is good content. What gets youtube the best content is giving as open of a platform as possible for the most people to be able to compete with the giants on a level playing ground.
This will only result in a decline in youtube's traffic as they lower the bar by making the conditions preferable to giants who release inferior content.

Views count towards monetization with the help of ads. Bounces may occur, but the fact remains... they are still making money in a cheap way and try to be enthusiastic behind it. Click bating/Content leaks is a trend in today's time maybe not in the music, or review genres of youtbe, but its everywhere on the gaming, movie side. I had to unsub 7 ppl b/c I grew tired of it. When I see videos like Pewdiepie gonna delete his channel 1st thing that comes to mind is that is complete BS. This guy is making thousands of dollars every month probably even more its crap like that big youtubers can get away with in terms of click baiting. Would you cut off your thousand dollar investment after achieving 50 million subs?

Fantastic information and video MatPat. Your findings line up with mine nearly perfectly; Audience Retention is far less important than Total Minutes Watched, likes and comments do very little, and not making daily long form content makes growing much more difficult. What I would add into this is RUclips's push for Total Session Watch Time which is resulting in an explosion of children's content as well as the Click through rate receiving increased importance. I loved your analogy of the treadmill continuing to increase in speed.

What's sad is that after all this, RUclips is still a company and like every other company, no matter how good or bad they are to the people working for them, they will still care first and foremost about their profit. It's the blood of every company that keeps them running.
What makes me upset is that people are upset. I know youtube is where a lot of people make a living, but youtube itself is a business that cares less about creative rights and more about the video views from creators. RUclips has always been fickle, going back and forth on what gets you a copyright strike and what doesn't, and there's so much drama and poison there that I wouldn't want to make it big and garner the attention of the things and types of youtubers that I hate. RUclips should be a hobby, not a job, especially because it is its own business that hardly has any relationship with those who partner with it and make their own content. It's a weird quagmire that I enjoy being a part of from afar, especially knowing that all the drama doesn't affect me personally.

Make a company, basically you need way more then one person for your channel to be successful, because one person trying to put out the amount of content required to stay retentive is nearly impossible. My channel isn't monetized and I only put out videos when it's what I want to do, I'm not looking to make money or get popular I just want to share my fun with others when I have it. That's one of the ways you got to approach making content, do you want to make money or have fun, or make a lot less money and have fun.
I've had my channel for a while now and my videos are decent quality too. But i'll never blow up because it's just me, in college and no time to create a ton of content to keep up with demand. I'll probably never be super big but that's okay. I record game play with my best friends because we're hilarious! I edit because I find video editing fun (Except for editing my own voice *Eww*). I upload to RUclips (a magical place that I spend a lot of my life) because I hope for people to watch my content and maybe get some giggles out of it. I don't care if I become huge. Would I like it? SURE! But who wouldn't? No matter what happens just keep creating because its what YOU enjoy. That's what every one like you, like me, and everyone like us must do.

Adrien Arnaldi He forgot to mention that most big RUclipsrs never bother to implement a proper SEO. Pewdiepie for an example, he never bother to write any proper description beside copy paste links. If you have TubeBuddy or something can see other channels video tags. His tags are super lazy at best with only less then 10 tags are implemented. If he actually put some effort on his SEO, he could double his views.

I was once solely a consumer of Mat's actual theories about games but there's something about turning 20 that sparks your sudden interest in the mechanism that lies below. As English is not my first language, had I watched this some years before the whole video would just fly over me and I'd click away after the first 3 minutes. I really appreciate Mat crunching numbers for us and I'm sure this will stay relevant until RUclips implemented another new algorithm (which by the time this is written they might have).
It's a shame though now that with this algorithm, channels with videos that have a long span of relevance will lose over channels that update videos daily regardless of its content.

We come here to watch people we like to watch. Want to remove what we like and kill the channels we follow? Go ahead, and when you will be as deserted as older video platforms, don't come crying to us. RUclips was great BEFORE.

One thing I'm not so sure about in this video is RUclips wanting to feature what's current. I'm getting way more older videos recommended to me than ever on the homepage and it's confusing.

"Current" doesn't necessarily mean "new". In this context, it means what is "popular".
These older videos, for whatever reason, are resurfacing and catching people's attention, even if they're from 2+ years back.
Maybe some reddit user or 4chan topic showed it off recently, caught their users attention, and that got hooked by youtube's algorithm and was propelled into the recommended section. First for users with similar interests, and if that works, then into the recommended section of users that are even partially interested in particular tags.
There's any number of unseen reasons for this to happen, but short of working with youtube directly, we'll never be sure of what those reasons are.
I remember only a week ago a 10 year old video was on the trending tab. It was about cricket.

IIRC, RUclips pretty much just breaks even every year. The cost to serve many petabytes of data a day barely gets met by the money earned.

Why am I being recommended videos from YEARS ago?
Watch pewdiepie's video, he said from the suggested he gets 31% of views, but a lot of those videos are old ones, before youtube fucked up big.
Recent videos have like 0.1% views from suggested, so youtube suggests old videos so:
1. New videos don't get a lot of views
2. Seem like everything's normal
