    Great video. I spend a lot of time making each video and especially trying to optimize tags title thumbnail and description. Last month I got distracted and totally forgot to add any tags and launched the video with no tags. I didn't notice until 3 days later, and for no reason I just happened to go to edit something and discovered no tags. The remarkable thing is that this video performed as good as all my other recent uploads. In other words, the tags I usually use did nothing at all to assist me in getting views . Maybe the algo has progressed past that by now....who knows.

    I've been watching this channel and Film Theory on and off for maybe a year and a half, and I have a few things to say. Firstly, I think it's really awesome that a video like this has been made. I mean, not many channels really go into detail what RUclips really is. I don't want to sound like a know-it-all or anything, but I sort of figured that the system that RUclips uses for recommendations wasn't completely in the hands of the company, because I'm very aware of how fast and popular RUclips has grown over the years. It's really great to have someone explain how it works in a way most older demographics would understand. Even as a middle school student, I found it fascinating, so thank you for that. Secondly, the way that RUclips is evolving seems like it would be terrifying to much smaller, lesser known channels. I really hope that as the site grows, channels won't change their content to become more well-known. I know the point of this video was to help other growing channels and educate them to be smarter with the choices they make with their videos, but I hope it doesn't necessarily change their original identities. I personally enjoy smaller channels just as much as people like Markiplier and Pewdiepie (well, I don't really Pewdiepie that much, but just as an example.) I like diversity, and it's an important factor in RUclips's growth. I just hope that channels focus on the love and care they put in each of their videos, not the likes or subscribers that they receive because them. Lastly, I don't think I'll ever do much with my RUclips channel. I have one stupid video that has to do with Undertale, and I know most people consider it "dead." But I do think that this video is helpful for people who are trying to become more well known. Though I personally will never really do much on RUclips, it's nice to know some channels are willing to help other channels grow and flourish. So thank you for demonstrating that.
    Also, I finally subscribed after watching this video :-)

    Music producers can't make long enough songs to get on the recommended page. I can normally only make a three minute song every now and then.

    • @XianTheRetiredYoutuber
      @XianTheRetiredYoutuber 7 лет назад +1

      Yeah, musicians and animators tend to have issues in this sort of setup. Especially musicians who, based on the general rules of how music works, don't feel like they should be making music longer than 2-4 minutes since most successful songs tend to fall into that range.
      If you're looking for a way around that, maybe produce some super long songs that are meant to be listened to as background music (like 40 minutes of focusing music or that sort of thing). Maybe even string a bunch of songs together every once in a while when you've made a bunch to give your viewers a *music binge session*!
      I guess most would just call that an album... but *no it's a music binge session!*

      Perhaps maybe balance out your animation with videos of different variety

    • @wafflesaber4842
      @wafflesaber4842 6 лет назад +28

      Matpat addressed that having that diversity can actually hurt you more than help if people come just for one type of content and skip the others. TheOdd1sOut, JaidenAnimations, Domics, and Swoozie are all very successful with almost nothing but animation videos. This is likely credited to the fact that any time they DO upload, the video isn't skipped. So while they do get hurt by the lack of content over time, the RUclips algorithm does recognize that their audience is loyal for coming back.
      So as an animator, (or anyone with slow content output, really) your best friend is largely quality. Whatever will cause people to return consistently. Good luck! =)

      JorShi942 hey luffy

    • @JmonVids
      @JmonVids 6 лет назад +8

      JorShi942 For animations, try to find ways to create "fake" animations. Swoozie does a lot of this in his older work. Instead of animating a person talking, he'll draw two still images and alternate them during editing to create the illusion of an animated character talking. This obviously saves times and creates a cool aethstetic. Channels like Extra Credits and GradeAUnderA use a similar "slideshow" format to create the idea of an animated character (even though it clearly isn't). A lot of it had to do with workflow optimization and cutting corners that don't affect production quality.

    It's weird, MatPat does all these videos about the RUclips recommendation algorithm, rather enjoyable and fairly informative videos mind you, and I'm just sitting here, a bit of an oddity.
    You see, I never use the recommendation homepage. Not once, not ever. My RUclips bookmark is my subscription feed. I add to my library of subscribed channels based solely on recommendations of people in various communities, or from collaborations (alot of my subs come from these), I remove from my fee content that I'm either not interested in or don't feel I have the time for, each day my RUclips experience consists of quickly sifting through the daily uploads of 50+ subscriptions for the videos I really value from each channel. My point is, as far as I am concerned, there is no algorithm. I just use the subscription page and sort through the content myself. True, I miss a lot of one off content, but even that I generally glean from community interaction, constantly sending and sharing videos with friends and acquaintances via Discord, or a few years ago, Skype, or before that Facebook IMs, or back in the early days dedicated IM programs. My point is that these videos just seems strangely disconected to me. My closest friends and I have always exclusively used the raw subscription feed on RUclips as long as its been around, as the homepage recommendations just seem...annoying, like a wave of dirt with a few gems mixed in, just not worth even looking at since you have no real way of knowing the gem from the dirt till you watch it. We are probably the minority since everyone makes such a big deal about the algorithm this or the algorithm that, but from the notification bell to the length of a video, it's never really felt impactful to us, we watch content that is good and reliable because it is recommended first not by a fledgling algorithm that wont really hone its methods for years yet even still, but by people we know and trust and understand their likes and dislikes. Then after that we watch it because it is from a creator that we know and trust to put out good content, yet so many of these creators seem so determined to restrict themselves to a rule set that frankly is irrelevant to those like myself.
    I kinda rambled on, but the point is I don't use the home page, and find it confusing why anyone would. There is so much content on RUclips at this point, or even in its infancy, that I just don't see the appeal of having a imperfect system tell you what it thinks you want to watch. Probably in the minority, but who knows how many people like me never press that annoyingly labeled, basically worthless, "Home", or worse yet, "Trending" button at the top of the feed.

      Sam Osullivan let me stop you there. the dsm-v has completely eliminated gender and sexuality based disorders since they are not a mental illness. there is even a study that was conducted (albeit inhumanely) where they castrated and raised a baby boy as a girl and the child knew from as young as he could remember that that wasn’t who he was. meaning that you can raise a child to be whatever you want them to be but in the end their brain knows who and what they are. sure in the WESTERN world gender is a binary but believe me that wasn’t without the complete and total massacre of native gender practices. two-spirits, third gender, hijras, bissu, and multiple other native gender identities were erased and native (not just american but african and polynesian as well) people were forced into the girl/boy binary and given specific gender roles. gender now is a social and performative construct. we have assigned gender to inherently genderless items such as makeup, hair, clothing, shoes, even stuff like yogurt and pens. gender roles are a construct but so is gender. that’s why biology does not look at your genitalia and call them gender organs, they call them SEX organs, because SEXUAL REPRODUCTION is for the most part binary (not including intersex individuals) while gender exists on a spectrum that can be traced down the annals of history all the way to biblical times. hell there is even mention of third genders in platos symposium. so to classify nonbinary genders and transgender people as mentally ill is to be willfully ignorant of the thousands of years of precedent that have been recorded throughout history and practiced even to this day.

      +Cryper Villa you confuse asexuality with non-binary.
      "Some people may have some mental disorders which cause them to A.) not be sexually attracted to anyone and therefore believe that they are not make [sic] or female"
      Not being sexually attracted to anyone is not a mental illness, it is simply asexuality. Plus, there are many people who are asexual who are perfectly fine with identifying as male or female.
      I suggest you talk to people who have these so-called "mental illnesses" and see that what you assume is not true. You're probably a good person, you are just don't know that much.

    In the beginning when you were talking about how one of the people working at google didn't know how the algorithm works, I think you might've misunderstood him. Even if you didn't, I wouldn't be surprised if other people did misunderstand. Anyways, what he means by that isn't that he doesn't know how the neural network works, but rather he doesn't understand how the neural network makes its decisions. Below you can find a diagram of a neural network:
    Input watch time
    ] -----------------> Hidden layer (calculations) -----------> Output binary number (represents videos)
    Input genre
    So a neural network has a number of inputs (for example watch time and most watched youtube video genre) and a number of outputs (for example the videos that come out in your recommended list). Now, in the diagram above the input nodes are all connected to the hidden layer (which is composed of more nodes but we don't need to worry about that now). The input data is sent to the hidden layer and that does a bunch of calculations that determines how much you can rely on data. This is done and the number is sent to the output layer and if, for example, the output is formatted as a binary number, that can then be interpreted by an outside program.
    It's not that the people at google/youtube don't know how their algorithm (neural network) works. It's that this neural network outputs data based on calculations happening in the hidden layer, and those calculations are what google don't know about. They don't understand the determinant of the number that shows "reliance".
    Source: class
    I hope this at least helped one person. This is a topic I'm very passionate about and I would hate it if someone misunderstood what Matpat was trying to convey.

    • @Syogren

      is there any way to design a program that can, upon request, tell you how it makes the decisions when it's using neural networks? From what little I know about them, they seem to be a cluster of nodes interacting with other nodes. Is it possible to follow those around and from there explain what's going on? Like obviously there could be millions of nodes, and even more connections between them, but could a computer look through them and, in english, tell you how it finds videos? Or would it take greater than exponential time, and we need to wait for quantum computers fist?
      This may be necessary at some point, because the less we know about how algorithms work, the less we can do to prevent algorithms from doing things we don't want. Because that's when things get the scariest...

    • @conradical6288
      @conradical6288 7 лет назад

      Syogren the problem with having a computer explain in english is that neural networks determine their choices based off of the weights and the weights are determined by something called back-propagation (using calculus to get the correct answer pretty much). There isnt really a way for a computer to explain what its doing, because its just doing a lot (and when i say a lot, i mean a lot) of math. However, convolutional neural networks (another type of neural network) are more understandable since they make use of probability and classification. However, i really doubt that google/youtube's neural network is convolutional since those are normally used for image/face recognition (like facebook's automatic tagger!). Hope that cleared up some more :) (also if we want to prevent AI apocalypses from happening, all we have to do is have one function that clears a neural network and ta-dah, no more age of ultron).
