The Churchill AVRE Petard is the current event tank in War Thunder. This monster is clad in 90mm of armor all round and sits at a BR of 2.7! The armor alone makes it formidable but housed in the turret is a giant mortar launcher that shoots 230mm projectiles with 18kg of explosives.
The problem is, the gun has a range of around 100m and the projectile is VERY slow. Useless at long range engagements and even some short ones but when you're point blank, nothing is going to survive a hit from the Petard.
I genuinely thought I would struggle with this thing but it turned out to be pretty decent! :) I did get lucky with the maps, though.

Fun fact - The Velocity of the Petards round is equivalent to the top speed of a Honda S2000.
Not really as the S2K can go 150mph which is around 67 meters per second
So a inline 4 sports car from the 90s can outrun this shell which is even funnier

Petarded thing I have ever seen in my life.
The AVRE is like the immortal snail. You can drive as far as you want, but the AVRE is always chasing you, at a snails pace.
You know, it's a funny thing that I've noticed in various games. When you've got a big, tough and slow unit, you don't expect it to catch up to you. But if it just doesn't care too much about cover, or stopping to increase accuracy, it's going to cross the field faster then you might expect.
Noticed this first in Battletech actually. My force was trying to chase down the enemy, and with all of the direction changes to take cover and try to take out my lighter units, the OpFor was slowed down enough my Assaults were keeping them in good range by booking it across the field.
I am new to GRB. I was in a Panzer IV and saw in the kill feed this crazy Churchill getting kills. I was distracted by shooting another tank at long range when I heard a tank close by, I zoomed out to witness this thing maybe 75 meters away in front of me! It launched what I could only describe as a giant metal beach ball over my head and I shot his lower plate and got him. It was hilarious how slow that bomb really is.
Reminds me when the Sturmtiger got added, it was very similar although that was just because of people taking ranged shots at the spawns. lol

Please. One of the easiest Churchills to take out. It has 2 very obvious weak spots. 1 of which is it can be ammo racked from hitting the ammo in barrel. 2nd thing, it can be easily outflanked by faster tanks and sides are not that great on that particular tank.
That is a meme tank and completely not worth the grind. Especially not for 35.000 points per task.... :/
@@info0 you have to remember, this is a low tier tank. the people playing these br do not have hundrets or thousands of hours in the game yet. Obvious weak spots for the long term player, but not the fresh players. This thing is gonna drive people to uninstall the game. This is just a low tier maus. Balancing this thing will be an impossible task because it is somehow great and insanely aweful at the same time.
@@Max-hn5fs well, I was new player and I know one thing, low tiers are seal clubbing grounds for vets. I was there, now I joined the fray myself.
This Churchill is meh. Stuarts can easily take it out. Shoot machine gun port and you have a chance of killing 90% of crew. Shoot ammo in barrel is 100% ammo explosion.
It's not as viable as people think it is. It's why I have not grinded it as it was not worth it in my opinion. I might buy it of marketplace at some point as I don't think it will go for much more than 10$
Now if only Gaijin would fix HESH, then we'd be cooking.

Calling it "Smiting Distance" is so charming, I love it.
I think the best thing about that was when he said it, his bomb could have actually arced over the dead tank his target was keeping behind. Didn't end up being nessesary, but I checked the shot and it looks like the Petard can just render tank-high cover usesless.

Tip for the Churchill AVRE:
It is a good idea to use the rangefinder while you are reloading.
I think they need new voice lines just for the Petard. Every range-find the commander is like "ENEMY TANK POINT BLANK!!!"

While I’m a bit disappointed they didn’t make a reload animation for its incredibly unique cannon, I’m still very impressed with gaijin on this one. Hoping for more epic tanks to come.
At that point you'd have to have the turret angled just left of ahead and watch that poor co-driver stick his arm up under fire to reload the thing.

You should play the VEAK 40. It lost it's proxy fuze shells but got moved down in BR tto 7.7, where it now commonly faces prop planes and early jets. It is still very effective being a radar SPAA at such a low BR, and folding planes in half with 40mm is very satisfying.
I just love using it in arcade and punish some plane spawners
Yesterday I started to play War Thunder again after leaving it for 6 months... And this tank was new to me and also a pain in the balls. But it was funny to see something new you have never counter before... Kinda feel like the first days playing WT, when you didn't know anything about the enemy tanks and you had to start studying them in the hangar.
A Churchill AVRE with petard mortar did manage to get a kill on a Panther. The charge land 3ft away. It didn't blow a hole in the Panther, but it totally disabled it and the crew inside.

Fun fact, the crew will say "Rocket Loaded" compared to something along the lines of "Shell Loaded"

Also, there is a big weak spot on this Churchill, shooting the huge round even with MG can detonate it.
Ppl currently don’t know where to shoot it cuz its a new tank….only the ones who keep the track of it knows its current weakspots but give it like a week ppl will start to know the weakspots then its gonna be a lot harder to play with this thing

I used the US 75mm halftrack and the marder 2 and absolutely murdered these things today. It was so much fun.
The armoured regiment I served in when stationed in Germany ( 32 Armoured Engineer ) had an AVRE Centurion ( Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineer ) fitted with a 165mm main gun up on a plinth as a gate guard. This vehicle had been produced in the 1950s and been brought back out of retirement and refurbished to be used in the first Gulf War as the Royal Engineers no longer had any vehicle in service that was fitted with a demolition gun for taking out bunkers.
Dustbin launcher was the nickname for the gun, as when it fired, the round was so big and slow, you could actually watch it arcing through the air.
Yeah the Cent AVRE is in game actually, it's just hidden in the brit tree (comes back for some sales)

this is the kind of vehicle that makes warthunder fun, I almost got back in to grind for this but 35k score per mark on a 2.7 tank is just kinda rough.
I wish I could still have fun playing warthunder but atleast its still fun to watch you play it while I save my sanity.
In a similar vein, an old pal of mine was in the Royal Engineers, and served with the Centurion AVRE (the Churchills replacement). Said they were getting laughed at by some Tank regiment guys when they were at a tank firing range one day not long before the first Gulf War. That is till they fired at an old tank as a target, and you could visually see the large HESH shell flying thru the air towards the target. He said all laughing stopped when the target tank basically exploded into it's constituant parts, and there was basically nothing left of it.

My PB game in this thing is 9 kills in one life, or 13 kills with a respawn. Super duper fun tank, obsessive Sturmtiger/Cent AVRE/BM-31-12 gameplay has gotten me accustomed to these low velocity (and frankly shit) guns. This is the first 10/10 addition I’ve seen in this game for a good while

It's equivalent to shooting that Swedish trumpet recoilless derp gun except they buff the range on it also there's another variant of this with demolition cannon and not shooting a rocket round.

Still new to the game BR 2.3. Seeing a Churchill defending the point I’m attacking was one of the scariest moments so far. It took me and four other medium tanks ten minutes straight to kill him (M4A3)

You would not expect this monster to be much use against tanks. It was a machine created to deal with fortifications because that petard is as slow as a WW1 British tank.

I played a match today in the 2C, there were 7 Churchill AVREs on my team
Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers (AVRE), was always pronounced as a single two syllable word when I was in the army AVE-REE. We had the 105mm and 165mm armed Centurion AVRE's back in my time though, I'm old just not Churchill old!!!
i didnt get the AVRE. couldnt play enough the days of the event. damn work.
don't worry it got nerfed and is already very bad lol
