Fun fact: Liberia was founded by the American Colonization Society, because they'd rather ship slaves back to Africa than free them in America. That's why the flag of Liberia is a bootleg of the American one - that's almost literally what happened. It's also why their capital is named after President James Monroe.
Turns out the former slaves did a ton of pretty-much-slavery of their own once let loose in Liberia, even though their constitution banned slavery, and these Americo-Liberians were incredibly racist against the native Liberians. If you want 'bitter irony: the country', look no further than Liberia.
Maryland also made a not-colony for this purpose at around the same time, in around the same place even. The Republic of Maryland no longer exists, since it was absorbed into Liberia, but that's a cool fact I guess.
History is filled with such ironies. The Iroquois are heavily idealized as being peaceful and democratic... but that was only between themselves. As a group, they genocided and enslaved tons of other natives.

I actually played Liberia once, and only for the "No Country for Old Men" achievement. As soon as I got it, I left because I literally did nothing for the longest time.
I did that as Paraguay once, I was at war with Bolivia in veteran ironman and had almost won, my manpower was running dry so I had to go at scraping the barrel, that fixed nothing, though.

I played a UK game where I forgot to turn historical ai focuses on, and as a result I had to fight Italy, Germany, and France in that order, while ALSO holding the line against the Soviets. All this to say, that when Liberia joined the Allies, I gave them a huge chunk of west Africa and by the time the game was over in '47-ish, they had like 12 divisions actively fighting the Japanese on the frontline in China.

Just a bit of a correction, Liberia was founded by freedmen/freedpeople, not actual slaves. It was a white man's project but it was voluntary. I guess you can debate how consensual the move was in light of power dynamics but it wasn't just the middle passage in reverse. Many did die of disease, but for early colonial settlements that is pretty common. One can think of Roanoke, Jamestown and Plymouth in the US. The first died completely and the latter two suffered heavy casualties early on.
