Letter dated January 3, 1957 reads as follows: Mr. Elvis Presley 1034 Audubon Drive Memphis, Tennessee Dear Elvis, We have advised Mr. Sullivan that you are going to be doing the following songs on his show on Sunday January 6th: "When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold", "Too Much", and "Paralyzed". When the Colonel went to New York to discuss the set up with Mr. Sullivan on Sunday, Mr. Sullivan thought it might very appropriate for you for you to sing a hymn or a semi- religious song on the show. This would be in addition to the three you have already scheduled, and if time is permitting. You can certainly sing a hymn very effectively and I think it would make a very strong impression on the viewers. It has also been suggested by Mr. Sullivan that the hymn be "Peace In The Valley". Also: Elvis sang this song live on January 6, 1957 (Sunday) Elvis recorded "Peace In The Valley" months later in April of 1957. Other Fun Facts: Elvis stayed at The Warwick Hotel in New York and checked in under his "Love Me Tender" character name Clint Reno. His room numbers were: 1116 & 1118. He also flew to New York under the name Clint Reno. Elvis had to pay local NY taxes to the local Musicians Association for his two appearances at the CBS Studio in New York ($39 in total as a matter of fact). Also: After taxes Elvis cleared over 33K however he paid for his back up singers and band members travel expenses out of that pay- flight, room & board, food, clothes, etc. Speaking of clothes: Elvis bought all of the suits he wore on The Ed Sullivan Show at a local Memphis clothiers called Lansky Bro. He bought his first shirt from them at age 14 for $5. Mr. Lansky gave an interview telling that story. The two men remained friends for the remaining years of Elvis's life. It has been strongly believed that they all crossed paths back stage at one point though there is no surviving record of those interactions, if they even occurred, or how it all went. Finally: During his final appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on January 6th, 1957, Elvis actually dedicated his last song “Peace in the Valley” to the people of Hungary who were in the wake of the October 1956 anti-Soviet revolution. Elvis, and his manager Colonel Tom Parker, decided the singer should lend his support to the country’s fight against communism. Ed Sullivan even joined Elvis, and asked the TV audience to donate to Hungarian relief efforts. Last year in recognition of this act and his support of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Elvis Presley was declared an honorary citizen of Budapest, Hungary and had a city landmark named after him. At the end of that final show, Ed Sullivan made a statement that went a long way in public support for Elvis Presley. Upon the conclusion of Elvis’ last performance, Ed genuinely complimented the singer saying, “I wanted to say to Elvis Presley and the country that this is a real decent, fine boy, and wherever you go, Elvis, we want to say we’ve never had a pleasanter experience on our show with a big name than we’ve had with you. 3rd comment: Song Info: There'll Be Peace in the Valley for Me", also known informally as "Peace in the Valley" is a 1939 song written by Thomas A. Dorsey, originally for Mahalia Jackson. In 1951, a version of the song by Red Foley and the Sunshine Boys was a hit, and among the first gospel recordings to sell one million copies. Elvis Presley performed the song at the close of his third and final appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which reached 54.6 million viewers. The song has become one of the ten best-known gospel standards of all time, and has been performed and recorded by numerous artists. Blues and gospel composer Thomas A. Dorsey conceived the song during the pre-World War II tensions of the late 1930s while traveling via train through southern Indiana. Upon observing horses, cows, and sheep all grazing together in a small valley, Dorsey questioned why mankind can't live in peace. Copyrighted on January 25, 1939 under the title "There'll Be Peace in the Valley for Me", the song often appears informally as "Peace in the Valley". Dorsey intended the song for Mahalia Jackson, with whom he toured off and on through the early 1950s. *Fingers Crossed This Goes Through*
I'm only just discovering Elvis' gospel music, i never had time for it before, but listening more to the 70s stuff and gospel now I'm hearing the rangenin his younger voice. It changed so much over the 21 year career. He sings like an angel in this ❤
That was so good. Elvis singing gospel is a big favourite of mine. His charisma jumps out right through the airways for sure!! Seph, I remember 16th August 1977 as though it were yesterday.. I was 18, devastated, lots of tears, bought more of his LP's. He was extremely popular in my Country. Even the older folks liked Elvis because of his beautiful gospel songs! Thank you for this vid Seph. Very heartfelt. He will never be forgotten. ❤️⚡🥇🙏✝️🇿🇦🌍
Young, shy, and oh so talented. Looking back to the 1950's, you can see that Elvis was born with that talent. Through the years his voice matured but the talent was there from the very beginning. I wish I could have heard him sing gospel in that black church when he was a kid.
@@ChefBarb58 The black church was where he learned to sing gospel the way he sang it. I don't think he would have learned to sing like he did without that influence, but yes, hearing it anywhere is good enough.
Lovely tribute to our Elvis. Too many tears today, so it is great to see you smile. If anyone can get me out of a funk, it is Elvis. Elvis and Seph...even better. My mother and sister were at the funeral and Vernon allowed them both to take a white rose from the coffin as a remembrance. My mother sat with Lisa Marie during the viewing and said that she kept running her fingers through his hair. SO SAD. I cannot imagine my life without Elvis in it. I listen to him everyday. Thank you for this uplifting video.❤❤❤
Thank you for this. I remember it well, but having only b&w TV, who knew what colors anyone was wearing.then -- unless it was a tux. I 2nd the comment to do "Elvis Presley King of Kindness" & "Elvis Presley a Generous Heart." Very insightful look into the other side of him.
Elvis recorded and/or sang so many of the gospel songs that were standards in my church. Every time I hear Elvis sing one of them it reminds me of how much a part of the fabric of my life was interwoven with Elvis's music. Thank you for your heartfelt comments, Seph; and, rest in peace to a warm, humble, gracious, generous, talented person who gave his all to his fans. Still miss Elvis all of these years later; and yet, he's still 'here' for us to enjoy & appreciate.

Saw it in real time. His mother wanted him to sing this Christian song, and the producers said "No absolutely not, no religious music", and he said "I will not go on unless I can sing this for my mother, I promised her I would." and they let him. He also ask the audience to give to their local charities for the aid to the Hungarian refugees because Russia had invaded their country at that time. He also gave a benefit for Hungary. You have got to do some of the humanitarian charities this man did, it will blow your mind. Maybe soon you can do "Elvis Presley King of Kindness' and "Elvis Presley a Generous Heart" he was so much more than an entertainer. A great man. Thanks Seph, I appreciate you.
Just amazing this man was beautiful inside and out with the voice of a Angle. Always and forever be in my heart ♥️ . (Is this your first time seeing the Jordanaires )
Elvis was coined as a rebel who incited kids to disrespect their parents, but I’m sure everyone, fans and antagonists alike, were thrown for a loop when they heard him singing for the Lord. I also think it’s funny how Ed Sullivan introduced him prior to singing this song, you could tell he didn’t know what to make of it.😂 Elvis, the Enigma. ❤
Seph, just so you know, this is the only time he wore this outfit. He wore a different outfit for the rest of the show. I think he changed because he wanted to be more respectful looking for this song. The first outfit was flashy.
Thank you so much for reacting to Elvis' today!! As I lit My candle in remembrance of Our Elvis, I couldn't help myself from crying!! After all these years I am still Heartbroken and I Miss Him and I Wish he was still here!!! 💔
Yes, Outstanding performance from the king with his own unique interpretation of his vocals LIVE, but a sad day to celebrate a unique special man who gave us, and continues to give so much happiness in life. Bravo Seph and Bless you for staying with it till the end and giving your own tribute to a man who will never be forgotten. We all love you too!😀♥
They use his music for weddings and funerals. And in between. Imagine having sung so many kinds of songs, he fits any occasion. A superstar from another galaxy. Thanks wonderful reaction.
Such a fitting song for today. He will be forever loved and missed by people worldwide for his beautiful voice as well as his kind and generous deeds. It’s really astonishing how his legacy lives on and he continues to sell a huge volume of music 47 years later. He will be forgotten 💕
Thank you for doing this today. I know exactly how you're feeling as I feel the same on this sad day. At least we can celebrate his life and look back and still enjoy all the wonderful performances that he gave and the songs he sung and the movies and documentaries that he appeared in 😍😍 It's very appropriate that we could see his mother's face in the background on this as I have read that his mother asked him to sing it and he insisted on doing it 😊
You couldn't of picked a better song for today lovely reaction Elvis was beautiful inside and out how many musicians would insist on doing a gospel when told no, because his mother wanted him to ❤ RIP
Oh no….. here I go again. 😢😢💔 My eyes are swollen. ❤ He was always into Gospel so much. RIP Elvis. We have bit now for you. We’ll make sure your legacy continues with respect and love. Thank you Seph. ❤
Hi Seph! It's a sad and heart breaking day but you can laugh through it if you want :) Just listen to "Are You Lonesome Tonight - The Laughing Version". I assure you that you've never heard Elvis laugh like this before! And you'll be laughing right along with him! A genuine pick-me-up! Luv ya!
Great reaction to a song introduced by Ed Sullivan to support the Hungarian 1956 revolution against Russia, and after the song finished Ed Sullivan previously a 'hater', told the nation Elvis was a real nice boy and one of the nicest big stars to appear on his show
A bit of info: Elvis did his 1st TV appearance on The Dorsey Brothers Stage Show & maybe you can look at him doing a great "Shake Rattle & Roll" (can't put in link it will be deleted). Sullivan originally turned him down, so from Dorsey he did a couple on Milton Berle's shows, one on the U.S.S. Hancock. He also did a Steve Allen show -- that's where he wore a tux & had to sing Hound Dog to a live basset hound --which infuriated him. But regards to Sullivan, Berle received approx. 500,000 PAN letters -- not FAN letters but PAN letters -- because all of Elvis had been shown. And although the mail was negative, it caused Berle's ratings to top Sullivan for the 1st time, irritating Sullivan greatly which caused him to rethink his original decision of turning Elvis down & so agreed to have Elvis on his show in Sept., Oct. & Jan.
HE DID THIS SONG FOR HIS MOMMA THAT DAY.. SHE TOUGHT HIM TO BE A GOOD MAN, AND HIS GOSABLES CARRIED HIM THRU HIS WHOLE LIFE. BLESS HIM IN HEAVEN WITH HIS FAMILY ON THIS DAY AUGUST 16, 1977.. YOU ARE TIMELESS, REST IN PEACE ✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️
Take care Seph....This song was for his mother....he promised her he would sing it. The show didn't want a gospel song, but Elvis said he wouldn't do the show unless they let him sing it.
Yes I know, Elvis may have passed away 😢 on this day (47 years ago), I think this might be the saddest day in(Rock and roll)history, but I know was Gospel music 🎶 🎵, and he was a 3 time Grammy winner (in that type of genre 💙 ❤️), and Peace in the Valley is a perfect 🥰 💞 choice for this 1,thank you and God bless 🙌 Seph, Amen 🙏.
5th comment: I can see that my link did not go through 😥 So I shall email you Seph the link to Elvis's recording session in the studio of this song to you 😊 It's a really great 24 minute listen. Of course I AM speaking as an Elvis fan so do take that with a grain of salt 😁 I REALLY LOVED YOUR REACTION TO THIS SEPH 😍💖😍💖😍💖😍💖 PERFECT SONG CHOICE FOR TODAY 🌹💜🎶🎤🎶🌹💜 THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING 🙏 Also as an aside: Checked your Elvis playlist and Great Balls Of Fire they really cut your Elvis playlist in half, if not more than by half 😨😕😬😭💔😭💔 THIS IS SACRILEGE! 4th comment: Songwriter Info: Thomas Andrew Dorsey (July 1, 1899 - January 23, 1993) was an American musician, composer, and Christian evangelist influential in the development of early blues and 20th-century gospel music. He penned 3,000 songs, a third of them gospel, including "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and "Peace in the Valley". Recordings of these sold millions of copies in both gospel and secular markets in the 20th century. Born in rural Georgia, Dorsey grew up in a religious family but gained most of his musical experience playing blues at barrelhouses and parties in Atlanta. He moved to Chicago and became a proficient composer and arranger of jazz and vaudeville just as blues was becoming popular. He gained fame accompanying blues belter Ma Rainey on tour and, billed as "Georgia Tom", joined with guitarist Tampa Red in a successful recording career. After a spiritual awakening, Dorsey began concentrating on writing and arranging religious music. Aside from the lyrics, he saw no real distinction between blues and church music, and viewed songs as a supplement to spoken word preaching. Dorsey served as the music director at Chicago's Pilgrim Baptist Church for 50 years, introducing musical improvisation and encouraging personal elements of participation such as clapping, stomping, and shouting in churches when these were widely condemned as unrefined and common. In 1932, he co-founded the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, an organization dedicated to training musicians and singers from all over the U.S. that remains active. The first generation of gospel singers in the 20th century worked or trained with Dorsey: Sallie Martin, Mahalia Jackson, Roberta Martin, and James Cleveland, among others. Author Anthony Heilbut summarized Dorsey's influence by saying he "combined the good news of gospel with the bad news of blues". Called the "Father of Gospel Music" and often credited with creating it, Dorsey more accurately spawned a movement that popularized gospel blues throughout black churches in the United States, which in turn influenced American music and parts of society at large. Contrary to the rumors that persist to this day about Ed Sullivan (who WAS a very strong Christian himself) not cool with Elvis singing a gospel song and that Elvis sang "Peace In The Valley" for his mother, none of that is true.
Letter dated January 3, 1957 reads as follows:
Mr. Elvis Presley
1034 Audubon Drive
Memphis, Tennessee
Dear Elvis,
We have advised Mr.
Sincerely,
Tom Diskin
"Paralyzed" was obviously cut from the live show song set list and was replaced by "Peace In The Valley".

4th comment: Songwriter Info:
Thomas Andrew Dorsey (July 1, 1899 - January 23, 1993) was an American musician, composer, and Christian evangelist influential in the development of early blues and 20th-century gospel music.
