      Malaysia was under the british. Present day Indonesia was under the dutch.. so most of the descendants of Cape Malays are linked from present day Indonesia (many political disidents were exiled to south africa from Maluccas, Java, South sulawesi, sumatra, etc) because south africa and present indonesia was under dutch rule in the early 17th century. Not malaysia

      @@patriot4786 why they called themselves as malay not indo then? 😶

    • @patriot4786
      @patriot4786 3 года назад +15

      @@rajasriindra9004 now let me explain. So when the ancestors of these people (cape malays) were sent by the Dutch to south africa from the Malay archipelago back in the 17th century, at that time there was no Malaysia/Indonesia/Singapore/or Brunei, it was only known as the Malay archipelago known by the westerners and known as "Nusantara" by the local people. Because the malay archipelago is and was very diverse in the sense of ethnic groups, the westerners refered to the people of the malay archipelago generaly as "Malays" as per "Austronesian people" is concerned. It can be people from Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi, Mollucas, etc, because the ethnic groups which were sent to South africa from the malay archipelago was very diverse (some can be from Java, sulawesi, sumatra, etc) so their nomenclature is called till today in south africa as "Cape malays", malays in this sense dont mean their ancestors were pure "malay ethnics" like those from Sumatra, Malaysia, and borneo but it is a nomenclature refering to their ancestors which originated from the Malay archipelago (present malaysia/Indonesia/singapore etc)...but most of cape malays ancestry go back to present day indonesian territories such as many were from Makassar (south sulawesi) because imam al makasari which was isolated to south africa sent by the dutch because of hes political dissident status, many of cape malays have sulawesian ancestry, and also many have javanese, sumatran, maybe borneon, mollucan etc ancestry. Hope u will understand 😊

      They are called that because the original slaves that were brought to the Cape by the Dutch were Malays from Asia, but by the 1800's anyone from Madagascar or East Africa who joined them in the Cape and was Muslim became called Cape Malay. In fact the majority of Cape Malays in South Africa are of East African and Madagascar descent, along with Angolan and West African and local black!
