It's crazy how people are having such diverse reactions to this. I can hear it just fine on my Audioengine A5's. I know very little about the subject, but think this is a great reference, if it's accurate!
Artificial stereo is a very old technique. I had a mono recording of The Limeliters: Tonight, In Person that was the original mono recording, and a later record in fabricated stereo. I'm pretty sure it was recorded mono, looking at the cover picture. I'm not too sure how they did it then, but maybe with some kind of frequency filtering and mixing? It wasn't terrible, and actually sounded quite a bit better than the monaural recording. The faux 8D, or whatever they call it now, basically generating what would be heard with a binaural recording, is really convincing..actually better than binaural, at least for locating single point moved sources. Obviously it doesn't work without headphones.
Why, what would you use? And here's a clue, the recommended settings in the YT literature flat out SUCK. Aliasing noise galore. I would guess that whatever you are listening on would swamp most of those artifacts though. Obviously I don't know that, but just a guess. That isn't subjective either, there are YT videos showing spectral frequency plots on the different settings and the resultant digitization noise.
