Great review! I am also amazed this camera is not blowing up on YT. I really like mine but miss the IBIS (like my GH5) and haven’t found a Leica L OIS lens that i like yet, but the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN is a beast - both in weight in how it looks. My 240mb/s v60 SDXC cannot keep up with FHD 12 bit. It’s my first time shooting with CinemaDNG and even though it can get cumbersome to edit, I like being able to pull out nice stills when shooting videos.
I actually think the fp would be a great camera to use along side the Pocket 6K/4K because of the field of view coverage alone. I shoot on the Pocket 4K with a speedbooster as well and I love what I can do with it but a 6K or the fp would be a perfect side camera to have for narrative work I want to shoot. Having these two in conjunction can help you get really good side angles to bring into the edit while trying to keep the performance cohesive. If you're gonna crop into aspect ratio, the different fov would look very nice in my opinion. Also have to give the camera massive props for how clean it looks even after being compressed by RUclips.

You’ve got 4K 60p? I haven’t seen that in mine at all. Only 1080p. The camera has a lot that’s nice about it but take away the cinema dng 12 bit and it’s out performed by Sony, Nikon, Panasonic full frame stills/ video cameras in every single way. The size comes at a big cost in practicality and cinema dng whilst it may be the “purest” it’s just so old a format and in real world shooting way too data intensive for me. Blackmagic knew this and implemented lossless cinema dng which helped a lot. In reality a great 10 bit codec internally is for me the way to good and I hope Sigma continue to improve the camera with firmware which it can. Give it log. Improve the internal recording. Add an EVF onto the side which I bet they can. I love the idea of the camera more than the actual camera and because of that I am rarely using it.
Yeah, it’s definitely lacking some options. Honestly if it was $2500 but had 4k 60p 12 bit or more codec options then it would be worth the price. Either way the image is quite pleasing and that was really the focus of the video.

2 Years later I have ordered one and it seems there may be a resurgence in this camera. All it has missing is 12bit CDNG @ 60fps.. Filesize is much less a problem now...
is this linear or log-encoded raw? Confused as to what was meant by the bit at 8:49 . I'm assuming the monitor has a lut applied, but to the dngs look how you expect? Sony supplies linear 16-bit raw from the fx9 and venice, and blackmagic used to output log-encoded 12-bit dng. IIRC 12-bits linear is barely enough to record 14 or more stops, which may explain your dynamic range complaints.
Nice nice review. It's such an interesting modular little thing, and built like a tank. I appreciate what Sigma was trying to accomplish with it. Buy the core of a camera, and build it into something that works for you. It lags in some areas verses the competition (ex. focusing), but then exceeds them in others (size/modularity). I hope Sigma gains enough following with it that it doesn't end up being a one-and-done type thing.
That's crazy. I would actually trade my A7iii for this if it didn't mean also upgrading the whole editing setup, hard drives, CPU, etc. to even be able to use it.
Thank you for this. It is really helpful as I am contemplating this camera for my next purchase. Regarding the space-quality tradeoff, something that I've been using for a few years with 4K CinemaDNG raw from my FS700 is a little program called Slimraw. It takes your uncompressed CinemaDNG footage and offloads it from camera media to storage as true lossless compressed CinemaDNG. This way I save around 2/3 of the disk space in post but still get the full raw image quality. I can image it will also be very useful with the Sigma.
@@robertulrich3964 I just select the whole drive and click "Start" and it does its job transferring and compressing all the footage. It replicates the whole folder structure including the audio files, I am not sure what could be automated further. Very fast too, I usually offload a disk while recording on another and swap media once the disk in the Odyssey is full.
Thanks. I watch your video a few months ago. Have you seen the recent firmware update? Now this camera is really appealing to me instead of buying a second BMPCC4K. Oh tempting. Cheers. :)
Not gonna lie, the footage from that FP with your Canon FD 55mm looked gorgeous. So are you planning on doing a separate video on the Orion Anamorphic lens you were teasing about on Instagram then?
Spenser Sakurai Oh, did you not buy the FP? And that could be interesting! With the release of the Vazen and especially the Sirui Anamorphic lenses, I think we’ll be seeing a huge rise in indie filmmakers on a budget exploring the Anamorphic Look, much in the same way cameras with RAW codecs are becoming much easier to get access to.
FYI - you can pick up a used Ursa Mini for about the same price in 2020. This looks tempting, but I may be a bit cautious and go for the tried and tested camera first...
Great review! I was also wondering why people weren’t talking about this cam as much. Love that it’s truly compact (pocket sized). What did you shoot your main talking head portion of this video on?
I know I'm being too optimistic, but imagine if the a7siii shot 24p 12 bit 4k raw. also there is an adapter coming out for the pocket 6k that makes it a full frame sensor (there is also the sceen flip mod for black-magic by Tilta, and Steadxp+ for stabilizatio)
It's a little over what you said you wanted to spend, but if you can get your hands on the F6 I think it would be a great option. I personally just sold my RED Scarlet to move to the F6 as my A Cam.
Spencer I’m thinking of getting this camera but I would like to get to get some raw footage in DaVinci Resolve and see how it works. Do you have a small sample clip I could download to try out?
First, this is the best review of the sigma FP out there. Great footage too. Thanks. I am curious about the dynamic range. Larger sensor should be better DR than BM 4k. I am guessing it is the lack of a log profile that limits the DR (whereas BM is all log profile). Thoughts? Also, which did you find to be sharper? I assume the sigma sensor is same as sony a73 and nikon z6 (which may be the same as sony a7r3 and nikon z7- the former having grouped pixels- just my theory). Although, i've heard no AA filter. BMs are always very sharp, so wondering how raw files compare. Thanks again. Great work!
ahh. just caught your log comment on 2nd watch. interesting. so nothing lost without log profile (ie. full tonal curve is there)? curious why DR is less.. also, is HDR video working yet? that should be very interesting for DR.
Very sharp compared to a bm4k with a Speedbooster. Didn’t really look into AA. Not the biggest deal in a controlled environment like I would probably use it but definitely something to look out for. I preferred it much more than the Nikon Z6
I have bought mine just after the announcement, frankly speaking it is a nice piece of toy, and I'm using adapter for my Leica lens on it. But if you use AF L-mount on it, FP has some issues: Pretty slow AF compared to any other competitors; NO wifi; etc.
Did you do a decent comparison between 10bit and 12bit? Crimson Engine just posted a comparison video and he said he doesn’t see a significant enough difference on the fp to justify doing 12. He also strongly recommends to always shoot 4k, regardless of how you’re later downsizing it, because the fp does a lousy job of it. So go to 2k in post, not camera. I’ve got the camera, but I’m pretty much of a noobie to all this.
You've pulled some of the nicest footage I've seen from this body yet, I did notice though, on the A|B comparisons, that the FP was missing a chunk of detail that the BMPCC4k was managing to pull. Was there a noticeable quality difference between the lens on each camera? It reminded me of the difference when I swap out my Sony Kit lens for my Zeiss 55mm. Loved this video, keep up the good work!
I’m so sorry to have read that the Macaron shop is “permanently closed” according to google maps. Honestly, your video about the camera made me want to have a macaron as well as the camera.
I think I’m getting one to throw on an FPV Drone! Everyone is using bmpcc4k but it’s soooo much bigger and I’m sure it weighs much more! Is there any rolling shutter issues?
Great cam for scouting as well. Would love one but I own too many cameras. Doesn't beat the Pockets usability, highspeed and pro-res workflow. Doesn't beat my Fuji XT3 on the stills front/video autofocus when I need. And the Mavo LF covers my high-end shoots. But for one camera that has little bits of all those... It seems hard to beat. As a directors viewfinder it could pay itself off and then you have a tiny fullframe 12 bit raw b-cam to hide places.
Loved this video. You've earned yourself a sub. Can't wait for more! One small critic though, some of your quick cuts seem to desync your audio. Making your mouth and voice misalign by just enough to be noticeable. Nonetheless, a great video!
As the independent cinematographer, the deal-breaker of sigma FP as below : ① No touch screen as BMPCC 4K. ② No IBIS,mostly for handheld purpose . Please add it such as Panasonic S1H. ③ L mount and r autofocus system ( it's really a stupid strategy to follow Panasonic's contrast detection+DFD, look at Sony...)
All those cameras to choose from... well, after more than one year working with the Sony A7III and A7RIII i begin to think about changing the whole set for the EOS R - what would you suggest? :)
bro great video , but please do one or a couple of more videos with complete rig , I want to shoot documentary style videos and this is in my range but I'm worried about buying wrong or useless accessories for it
Great video! I have always been interested in filmmaking but can't decide what camera to get. I can only spend about $700 right now. Do you have any recommendations? I am thinking about a Canon DSLR maybe. thanks for any help you can give me.
Hi Spenser. I've been watching your videos with great joy. I think the footage you shot of the bakery is possibly the best I've ever seen on your channel. I'm also going to say that I much prefer the totality of the footage of you talking to camera just before the bakery clip. I watch everything at home on a colour corrected projector, and this camera makes the XT-3 look washed out. My current obsession is with video RAW. Do we need it? Isn't it that much sharper?? No stills photographer Ever shoots professional work with jpegs. Then why are we shooting h264 and h265?! Help!! 😊😆
Yeah ultimate comparison prores raw in nikon z6 vs bmpcc6k braw vs lumix s1h(prores raw when it comes) vs sigma fp cdng. Image quality, highlight, shadow recovery, highlight rolloff in daylight ,lowlight .
There appears to be some opinions out there that this camera can be used exclusively for stills. I’m thinking the FP2 will make it more obvious that this should be considered a true hybrid camera.
Thanks Spencer for all the great vids you’re putting up here. I have a question that’s slightly off topic for you. I’m preparing to shoot a docuseries and have a BMPCC4K so far. I am considering whether to just double up on that for 2 camera setups but wondering now if it’s worth spending the extra money to get an Ursa Mini as A-cam instead. Any thoughts on this?
Not a fan of the Sigma FP. It just lacks too many cinema camera features for me. I'd honestly rather go with lower resolution and have more run and gun features.
Edit, *_CONTRAST ONLY AUTOFOCUS?!_* The dynamic range being inferior (HOW DID THEY MANAGE THAT IT'S FULL FRAME FFS), and the lack of articulating screen, are dealbreakers for me. Otherwise this would be my ideal camera, if it had Animal Eye AF like on my Sony. I love the small build.
How about the common codecs like h.264 or hevc in this camera???that most of people say it's shitty, this month i've had planed between this and Panasonic s1h only for short film making, thanks before
Hi, thanks for the great review, what’s the difference between the “base ISO” and any other ISO? Could you explain what base ISO is and what it’s used for please, thanks a lot 👍
Wild Bill base/native is where the camera is at its best, the lowest noise, most dynamic range, usually you want to stick around base. There’s more scientific ways to describe it as that’s what the sensor is tuned to operate at but with cameras like the blackmagic you get 2 separate electrical circuits one at 400 & one at 1250 so those 2 will have the best DR & Noise.
You have compared many cameras. Is it worth buying UMP G2 compared to Bmpcc4k, Zcam E2 F6. I am interested in the dynamic range and price / quality so that I can squeeze a high-quality, cinematic picture. Now I’m watching Sony Fx9- that I like colors very much, but expensive and without anamorphic mode. What do you advise?
Comes to money youre willing to spend. UMP and fx9 is a "real" camera, the rest need a little help to be properly functional. That being said all these cameras can get the job done if you want to spend less money!
I personally chose the F6 over the G2. They are similar in cost, but the versatility and size of the sensor and photocells on the F6 pushed me over the edge.
Hey Spenser, just wondering if you’ve seen P4KAlex and what you think of it if you have? It’s a LUT for the pocket 4K that’s getting a lot of hype because of how well it emulates the Alexa colour space and highlight roll off. The website is Emotive Colour.
Probably the best image on the market right now, certainly in RAW 12 bit, will have to see what the a7s III 16 bit RAW looks like. Has anyone tried this handheld? The small size makes it seem great for run and gun, but no stabilization likely means footage is too shaky and unusuable :/
IMO sigma has made nothing but exciting cameras (not nesassaraly good onse) but still theyre the only onse to use foveon sensors and i love my SD Quattro
Hi, how are you, I Loved your vid, and decided to post a comment. Coming from photography , I would love to make a filming experience for the first time. Our next trip to Iceland will provide the experience, but, I would love to try a camera that allows me to learn and also film some of the great birding life you may find there. Do you think this camera can do so? or is the bmpocket better? The places we should be going are kind of "the less weight the better" not only as for the hicking but also we need all the time to protect ourself from high winds. Hubby always do so by getting in between me and my cameras! LOL. One thing I noticed when you compared both cameras is the softness between this FP and the BMP 4k...Is that a usual thing? The BmP, showed you sharper, the FP, softer... For bird filming sharper is better...I would love to hear about you, in the meantime best regards, from Uruguay.
It was slightly out of focus. The full frame makes focus a challenge when filming alone. The camera is not soft. It can be very sharp. That was just a mistake in my end.
Would only hope that 2 things happen in firmware. ProRes RAW readout to Ninja, and a WDR mode built into the camera. Maybe better focus peaking as a plus.
when that Prores RAW feature comes out, it will also come out on the Panasonic S1 and Nikon Z6(which is only $1300) as they all share the same sensor as the FP. so save your money.

2 Years later I have ordered one and it seems there may be a resurgence in this camera. All it has missing is 12bit CDNG @ 60fps.. Filesize is much less a problem now...
Good day Spencer I like the sound of the Sigma Fp. Was just wondering if the Sigma Fp has unlimited recording time in all its formats.
I think it is the best camera of 2019. I love mine. Nice review. I’ve subscribed.
you are amazing, keep uploading man your channel will soon blow
is this linear or log-encoded raw? Confused as to what was meant by the bit at 8:49 . I'm assuming the monitor has a lut applied, but to the dngs look how you expect? Sony supplies linear 16-bit raw from the fx9 and venice, and blackmagic used to output log-encoded 12-bit dng. IIRC 12-bits linear is barely enough to record 14 or more stops, which may explain your dynamic range complaints.
The Dngs are not log but you can just switch the dng profile in resolve to get a log starting point.
been waitin for this vid!!! thank you!! :)
I have been wondering the same. Thanks for the look!
I can image it will also be very useful with the Sigma.
we need to automate this.
Oh, new vid from Spencer. Noice. Happy new Year man, do it more often in 2020 :)
Thanks. I watch your video a few months ago. Have you seen the recent firmware update? Now this camera is really appealing to me instead of buying a second BMPCC4K. Oh tempting. Cheers. :)
Good to see more reviews coming out for this camera!
Not gonna lie, the footage from that FP with your Canon FD 55mm looked gorgeous. So are you planning on doing a separate video on the Orion Anamorphic lens you were teasing about on Instagram then?
I may do a review over those lenses as a whole and then drop in that sigma footage. That test was just for fun really.
7:58 at what apertures were you on each camera, and frame rate?
Also you can now shoot compressed raw, both Braw and prores RAW
Great review! I was also wondering why people weren’t talking about this cam as much. Love that it’s truly compact (pocket sized). What did you shoot your main talking head portion of this video on?
On the sigma fp and sigma 35 f1.4
Thanks a lot. I think this just might be my next camera.
Damn you definitely have the potential to hit a million subs if you upload often.
sigma fp is fire. I rented one for a week and now I just need to figure out how to justify spending the money to buy one ;\
Love your work bro, btw what do you think about the Panasonic Lumix s1 and s1h (full frame 4k-6k)
I need to review one those!
That will be awesome man💪
S1 vs bmpcc 4k
S1h vs bmpcc 6k
Loved your review brother. Lots of love from India, I wish they add 4k 120fps, and recording in prores with an external recorder
Fuji GFX 100 gets my vote for camera of the year.
Yeah but it’s 10k 😅
The fact they didn't put a shutter in there breaks my heart.
Global electronic shutter would be great
I have bought mine just after the announcement, frankly speaking it is a nice piece of toy, and I'm using adapter for my Leica lens on it.
You could definitely see how the Metabones effected the image.
I’m so sorry to have read that the Macaron shop is “permanently closed” according to google maps. Honestly, your video about the camera made me want to have a macaron as well as the camera.
Check out the ZCam F6; I think you'll love it.
I think I’m getting one to throw on an FPV Drone! Everyone is using bmpcc4k but it’s soooo much bigger and I’m sure it weighs much more! Is there any rolling shutter issues?
I saw an Ad about the Sigma FP, it was absolutely amazing
Great cam for scouting as well. Would love one but I own too many cameras. Doesn't beat the Pockets usability, highspeed and pro-res workflow. Doesn't beat my Fuji XT3 on the stills front/video autofocus when I need. And the Mavo LF covers my high-end shoots. But for one camera that has little bits of all those... It seems hard to beat. As a directors viewfinder it could pay itself off and then you have a tiny fullframe 12 bit raw b-cam to hide places.
I don't see on the spec sheet where it can do 4k60 at any color depth.
I think he misspoke
Does it have dual native iso? What's the native iso? Fuji xt3 is iso 200 and iso 1600... Bmpcc4k is iso3200, Panasonic S1h is iso4000
It does now, with firmware 2.0: 100 and 3200.
OKC filmmaking, represent!
I’m excited to see BRaw on the Sigma fp!
Loved this video. You've earned yourself a sub. Can't wait for more! One small critic though, some of your quick cuts seem to desync your audio. Making your mouth and voice misalign by just enough to be noticeable. Nonetheless, a great video!
wow~when copy cDNG sequences from ssd to 2.5' hard-disk, it take such a long time hours and hours, is there any tricks to speed up the copy?
Help!! 😊😆
It’s really great tool! Conceptually new!
Seemingly the spec and pricing of Fp is dangerously close to Nikon z6 with raw upgrade. Would you like to do a comparison?
How about the common codecs like h.264 or hevc in this camera???that most of people say it's shitty, this month i've had
planed between this and Panasonic s1h only for short film making, thanks before
Hi, thanks for the great review, what’s the difference between the “base ISO” and any other ISO? Could you explain what base ISO is and what it’s used for please, thanks a lot 👍
Wild Bill base/native is where the camera is at its best, the lowest noise, most dynamic range, usually you want to stick around base. There’s more scientific ways to describe it as that’s what the sensor is tuned to operate at but with cameras like the blackmagic you get 2 separate electrical circuits one at 400 & one at 1250 so those 2 will have the best DR & Noise.
I like it.😁
You have compared many cameras.
Wait wait wait... OKC?? That's where I'm from!!
Wow fd 55 1.2 looks great... I have one but I have never used it on ff
Probably the best image on the market right now, certainly in RAW 12 bit, will have to see what the a7s III 16 bit RAW looks like. Has anyone tried this handheld? The small size makes it seem great for run and gun, but no stabilization likely means footage is too shaky and unusuable :/
Use an OIS lens.
That was just a mistake in my end.
what did you use to mount the fd to L mount?
Would only hope that 2 things happen in firmware. ProRes RAW readout to Ninja, and a WDR mode built into the camera. Maybe better focus peaking as a plus.
when that Prores RAW feature comes out, it will also come out on the Panasonic S1 and Nikon Z6(which is only $1300) as they all share the same sensor as the FP. so save your money.
the 6K is amazing camera - ruclips.net/video/Q_mFkmtJVOw/видео.html and 12 bit with the braw is amazing
Does this camera actually have 4K60p? I haven't seen that anywhere else.
what cam and lens did you shoot your talking head shot with. I like the look of that a lot.
Sigma fp 35mm f1.4
Sigma needs to work on the AutoFocus...otherwise Im waiting for the Foveon based setup...
Footage looks good. But I think it's always hard to see the full quality once it passes through YT compression.
