I met Wilf Carter at the Calgary Stampede when I was 5y.o. He was such a nice man, and I loved his songs. 😍
My mother's favourite singer. She did have a way with horses, with Beery's instructions. She taught her roan to rear just like in the Roy Rogers pictures.
My dad, Charles HEACOCK, died in 2002 at 86 years old. He used to sing this song to us when we were young. Wilf was one of his favorite singers along with Jimmie Rodgers. Wonderful old songs
My grandfather used to sing their songs too. Small world.

I've enjoyed old Montana Slim since the early 1950's.

Wilf Carter was a good musician!
I love your music .
When I was a kid around six years old my Mom had the radio on all the time. It was always tuned to the same country music station so I heard all the songs and singers. My favourite was Wilf Carter and one time the radio station had a call in contest asking who was the best country singer. Hank Snow won out over Wilf and I was outraged. I asked my Mom how that could be? I can't remember her exact answer, something like it didn't mean that Wilf wasn't still the best. I'm 78 now and I still thing he's the best - at least the one I like the most.. This one, Strawberry Roan, demonstrates the feel he had for a song, any song.
If the was CHNS Halifax I was a furious kid also. Wilf was leading until the end when program director Cecil Landry come on and begged people to vote for Hank Snob as he started on that station.
Wilf Carter Died on December 5 1996 , I was born December 6 1996

My all time favorite as a kid and still as an adult at 32
My dad rodeo with wilf Carter when I was very little
my mom used to sing this to us at bedtime She was a rodeo marvel she rode the mad scramble at Omak. Saddle bronc. She was going to run the suicide race but had a change of plans when she did the practice run. The horse was about the only horse on the planet that couldn't swim. Any one out there remember the mad scramble? .I have a picture. You can see 2 bulls and two broncs in the frame. God in heaven I miss her
Lots of horrible injuries to those horses. Not romantic.
I have this on vinyl that plays on my old crank em up record player.

What does the word chuck mean in the song?
"Chuck" is old western slang for "cooked food" generally - in this case, breakfast.
