  • GRANTHAM | A walk through the beautiful market town of Grantham, Lincolnshire
The new Margaret Thatcher statue and birthplace - Full tour of Grantham Town Centre.
We visit the LIncolnshire town of Grantham where a new statue of Margaret Thatcher has caused a controversy. We take a look at the new statue and the birthplace of Maggie Thatcher as well as a full tour of the town centre here.
Margaret Thatcher statue egged and booed after being erected in Grantham
Hurled eggs and loud booing welcomed in the £300,000 memorial to Baroness Margaret Thatcher, which has been erected in her hometown of Grantham. Others took selfies in front of it.
Eggs have been thrown after a statue of Baroness Margaret Thatcher was lowered into place in the former prime minister's hometown of Grantham.
Within hours of the monument being erected on Sunday, loud booing could be heard from some motorists as they drove past, with one man shouting: "Tear it down!"
The Thatcher statue is certainly divisive and controversial - let me know in the comments what you think!
Grantham is a market and industrial town in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England, straddling the London-Edinburgh East Coast Main Line and the River Witham and bounded to the west by the A1 north-south trunk road. It lies some 23 miles south of the county town, Lincoln, and 22 miles east of Nottingham.
This town began as a Saxon village and grew into a market town during the 11th century. It was recognised in the Domesday Book in 1086 with a recorded population of 183 households and in the Middle Ages, the town was successful in the wool and leather trade.
St Wulfram's Church towers over the historic town and was described by Simon Jenkins as ‘the finest steeple in England’. The Angel and Royal hotel located on the High Street dates back to the 13th century and is one of the oldest coaching inns in the country. The charming property has hosted no less than seven Kings and Queens over the centuries.
Grantham is an attractive town on the border with Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Within easy access of the A1 the town has some excellent close by attractions including the National Trust Property Belton House and the De Vere Belton Woods hotel and golf course.
The area has been home to some famous residents including Isaac Newton, Edith Smith (who was the UK’s first female police officer in 1914), and Margaret Thatcher, the former UK Prime Minister.
It is home to Belvoir Catle, an imposing castle that offers outstanding views. Belvoir Castle is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Rutland. The family have lived at Belvoir in an unbroken line for almost a thousand years. Today, you can enjoy a walk in the gardens and around the house, and they often host family days out and seasonal events.
You can also stop by the Engine Yard at Belvoir Castle, the first retail village of its kind in the local area. Here you can enjoy browsing the best of British gifts, garments and accessories from established and upcoming designers. You can also look forward to regular events, demonstrations and talks, from Countryside Corner debates to farmers’ markets every month.
Of Saxon origin, Grantham is mentioned in Domesday Book (1086), and its royal charter of incorporation was granted in 1463. In the Middle Ages Grantham grew prosperous from the wool trade. Located there is St. Wulfram’s Church, one of England’s finest medieval churches. The fine 18th-century George Hotel was made famous by Charles Dickens in Nicholas Nickleby (1839).
Grantham is the birthplace of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, and Sir Isaac Newton attended the King’s School there.

Great video, thank you for taking the time to do this!! My grandmother is from there. Her maiden name is/was Ashbury (then to be Villeneuve, as my last name is now). She was born August 1917 and passed away here in Halifax, Nova Scotia in May of 2003. I'm 46 and this is the first time I took the time do take a look at where my family came from. Looks like a very beautiful, historic place; alive, yet not too lively 😊. I wonder what the general cost of living is there? Quite frankly, I think it would be hard to be worse than where we are at here in Nova Scotia. Our Country is on a downward spiral and our Province is especially getting out of control......anyway, sorry for the ramble. Wonderful video, thank you.

Friend, you made my day!! I am a fanatic disciple of Sir Isaac Newton from my childhood days. As a senior manager of British Airways based in India, I have traveled for over 25 years to London. Yet, I missed out going to places like Grantham. I wanted to desperately see the Apothecary's home where Newton lived and Grantham Grammar school. I missed both these. Thanks to Vloggers like yourself I am glad I am able to see these places now. God willing, I will one day take a walk from the Apothecary's home site to the Grammar school like Newton must have done 370+ years ago!!!

I was born in Grantham and I still live here 45 years later(well basically 44 years as I was born in December 1979). Only 2% of Grantham people wanted the statue of Margaret Thatcher, the other 98% didn't but the council decided to go with the 2% to install the statue, also alot of people did say it would get damaged and then the council moan about spending too much money cleaning it. Which I understand it costing so much money and people who didn't like Margaret Thatcher shouldn't damage the statue at all.

A year on and people are having photos taken by Margaret's statue. I believe she has a right to be there, she was born in the town unlike the men who stand on St. Peter's Hill. No one is perfect and we all have our opinions but defacing statues is wrong. Issac Newton wasn't a saint and yet not only does his statue stand nearby the Market Place has an instillation in his name too.
I really think more people should learn the history of the UK.

Ah yes Grantham, the town where the local protesters occasionally take to the street shouting: NAZI FACIST'S OFF OUR STREET! and there isn't even any nazi fascists there!🤣 The town where if you use a sense of humour with the locals 60% of them don't know how to interpret it and punch you in the face. The town where the locals know nothing about one of the world's greatest scientists who lived near there Sir Isaac Newton. The town of Maggie Thatcher who ruined EVERYTHING. The town of 50% snobs and 50% hoodies, terrible fights on the street with the police arriving. The town where BEST KEBAB has had to constantly put up with racists breaking their windows. The town that Lincoln refers to as a shthole. The town that has a constant traffic jam going round in a circle. The town where the locals think it's such a privilege to have a snobby gossip and a bite to eat in "THE MUNCH" and it's only about the size of a cupboard. What did people like about this place they used to live in? The train out of there. Good luck 🤞

Making Grantham look nice IS a heck of an achievement. I suppose filming on a beautiful sunny day helps. Grantham looks very clean . That's as much as I can say about it. Passing through G on many occasions I thought it was a dull dreary nondescript Lincolnshire town. Not terrible by any stretch but not pretty either. The perfect birthplace for a Margaret Thatcher in fact.

Sad to see all the nail bars, foreign convenience stores, kebab shops and boarded-up windows. The George Centre is a ghost town within a town. But the statue will encourage people to visit Grantham when they otherwise wouldnt. As will i in a couple of weeks mainly to show my boys that monsters do walk among us. Just like when we visit jack the rippers haunts or the tower of london. The milk snatcher should be memorialized so we can avoid her heartless kind in the future

because there are no nice shops because the rent is high so its basically pop up shops or charity shops or food shops that open and close ever 2 months. Grantham is a nice place but the landlords (not gonna mention them by name ) ruined the town, but they still build thousands of homes in grantham because its so close to get a train to london. And most important is there is no jobs in grantham so alot of the "dole people from the 80s have brought there kids to do the same so the lets say not so nice
families moving to nicer areas and ruining them like on hill avenue / turnor cresent) the old people die the ruff ones move in and ruin the area , rubbish everywhere no respect for their neighbours ..... i left 24 years ago and see how bad it is now just by visiting my parents.

Even the old left now recognise Margaret Thatcher wasn't all bad ; why not celebrate the fact she helped change this country from "sick man of Europe" to a thriving global economy and Britain's first (3x election winning) female PM, a massive achievement in itself, still not repeated by the other parties today. Unfortunately in this day and age people want to reductify and simplify people to good or bad. Unfortunately this would leave us with very little to celebrate as nobody is perfect, especially the people who think they have the right to tear down public monuments. I am not affiliated to any political party but come from a time when listening to somebody else's opinion, even if l disagreed with it initially was seen as normal and as a civilized sign of healthy democratic debate. Thatcher is part of our history like it or not, as was William the Conqueror or Henry Vlll . Some people need to grow up and look around the world to see the true extent of the political horror elsewhere before attacking our own. Karl Marx's writings would not stand up to today's political correctness, I've seen them.

Really enjoy your walks. This one not so.
Thatcher took away my school milk, betrayed the minors, I remember seeing the police beating up picketers, and stopping family's from the south going up north trying to take food parcels. On Thatchers orders, nasty and devicive individual.
The damage she and her government caused is still being felt up north.
      "Levelling up is a lie".
Keep up the great walks Mr Gimbal ❤

@@spinynorman8217 ??? "grow up". Being accountable for your actions is important and sets a positive example. This never happens in British politics, or within the royal family for that matter.
Thatchers legacy is one of damage, and some of us were affected by this.
So grow up yourself and look beyond your little englander nose.

@@honourthefire9182 Thank you, I was around when she was in power I remember the damage she caused in this country, her legacy still lives on to this day with the NHS in such a state the railways have never been the same she closed the coal mines putt in 10s of thousands of men out of work then started importing cheap coal from abroad, a lot of those miners have worked down the pits since they left school and do t know how to do anything else so they need to be retrained which probably costs more than the pittance they were paid for doing the job in the first place

Great little town and a befitting location as the birthplace for a great British Prime Minister. Well done to the council for erecting this statue and even though it should have been in Parliament Square this definitely the next best place next to that other great Oxbridge graduate Sir Isaac Newton.

Now that "decolonising the maths curriculum" is all the rage among the wokesters, they'll have to make sure to bring extra eggs when they come to do Margaret Thatcher's statue so they've got enough left over to do the Isaac Newton statue as well.

@Nick Miller - I am not entirely sure what you are referring to, unless you are making a wider point about nothing being out of bounds in the world of wokeism. However I am not really interested in that I just believe great figures deserve to be recognized. I am not a Brexiteer, that said if Thatcher had been out the negotiating table with Tusk and Juncker in Brussels the deal would have been far better than we ended up with.
