- In this 16mm film made in Melbourne Victoria, we are shown how town gas is made from coal. The steps shown in manufacture take us from mining coal, transporting it to the gas plant, roasting the coal and cleaning the extracted gas, and finally mixing the coal gas with other types of gas for distribution to home and industry. The various uses of gas are outlined. Made by Herschells Films 1959.

Clear, concise commentary...great for kids
Man this is like a super high tech version of the british one lol
Which British one? Do you have the name of a different video?

Good Times!
When I watched mad max a billion years ago, I always wondered why there's no mention of coal or coal gas
COAL GAS IS BAD ASS!!!
How long did these exist?
I can't say for Australia, but Coal Gas AKA: Town Gas fell out of use in the UK in the early 1980s in favor of other alternative fuel sources.
I've been trying to learn more about Coal Gas/Town Gas since discovering a mod for the game Transport Fever 2, which the mod adds a gas works plant as well as the big gas tanks that are shown in this video.
@@SAUBER_KH7 I just discovered there was one near my house. A small one for a mental hospital. Looks like a farm house now
Phased out in the 80's
Looks new but wasn’t town gas phases out in 60s?
It was, the film was made in the 50s
so being new to this, is this in relation to propane?
Nope. It was synthesis gas made from coal gassification, known also as Coal gas/town gas, and pumped in pipes like modern lpg.
Natural gas
@@DiegoMartinez-gj7nk its not natural gas, its town gas made from coal
@@monkofmayhem1373 Town gas and natural gas are the same things. Town gas is natural gas obtained from coal gasification. It was the only source of getting natural gas before the 1950s. Since the 1950s, we all have been using natural gas pumped out of an oil or gas well and, most recently, shale gas. At the end of the day, what we are getting at our home is a mixture of methane, ethane, and traces of light hydrocarbons. Regardless if it came from coal or biomass gasification, oil or gas wells, or shale gas.
@@DiegoMartinez-gj7nk chemically it may be similar but to say natural is town gas is not correct as these terms refer to the extraction of the gas not the chemical compounds.
Now I know why they call it “natural gas”
Natural gas comes from the Bass straight gas fields.....The natural gas network took over from the coal gas network in the 80's
