I once belonged to a chorus at my place of work, and one of my most vivid memories is the chorus singing Hosanna to the Son of David in a stairwell. I stood next to a tenor as I sang the Second Soprano line, and in my ears and in my throat were the echoes of Gibbons resonant composition in all its intricacy and musical logic. Thank you for posting this performance. It takes me back to a very important moment in my life.

I miss this music so much. One day I want to be in a choir again and sing like this. The harmonies and dissonances make me feel like I see glimpses of heaven.

Got THAT right!! I feel he is vastly underrated - often thought of as a One Hit Wonder for This is the Record of John. Some of his other stuff, however, was right up there on the same level as Palestrina and Byrd. Perhaps because his overall quality is not as consistently high as the more commonly known greats of the Renaissance? That said, i do believe he deserves to be better known than he currently is.

I guess what you are saying true to an extent-that is that the music is beautiful according to its structure. I would like, however, to object towards certain qualities present within your comment that tend towards the 'religion' of Pythagoras. This is with regard to the gnostic tendencies of Pythagoras, which unfortunately falls in line the with neo-pagan world in which we live, were astrology is widespread; thus such ideas might induce the unsuspecting person to entertain such thoughts unwittingly. But, if you did just desire to make a comment on the beauty of the music and had no intention of such ideas, or were not aware of their danger, then you have my sincere apologies and hope that you might accept whatever profitable correction might be found in this comment.

ORLANDO GIBBONS { OXFORD 1583~1625 CANTERBURY } « THE BEST OF CHORAL AND ORGAN WORKS « ~ OXFORD CAMERATA, JEREMY SUMMERLY, fondé en mai 1984 ~.

I hear a high pitched reverberation as the choir increases volume. Is this due to the age of the recording?

My response is aimed at Daniel, not at you, Ms. Magnannl. I concur entirely with your statements. All three ancients’ teachings complement metaphysical truths.
