Any idea of the year they came out and serial number or what to look for? There is def a difference although I like 1.4 and 1.7 I just wanna make sure I get the right ones
@@heythere6983 I go off the S/N mostly. The V1.4 is known to have started around S/N 16016. I have seen used ones for sale going from S/N 16915 up to S/N 66482, the later ones (incl 66482) had the germanium clipping diode D2 removed/linked out. Those with D2 are true V1.4. Seen V1.7 starting at S/N 86299 to 156008. The early V1.7 used the V1.4 PCB, but marked up as V1.7 in black Sharpie on the case.
@@ToneJunkieTV I have owned the V2.0, V1.4 and V1.7 in that order and have played them off against each other. I prefer the V1.4 for clarity and gritty harmonics. The V2.0 has too much bass and the V1.7 sounds lifeless compared to the V1.4. It all depends on your guitar and amp, for me the V1.4 works best.
Oh boy was that a ride. I thought there wouldnt be a difference then I heard - the first one sounded better than the 2, 3, 4 & 5th. I was like damn, its worth the money! Then I heard the 6th, 7th & 8th; they sound more similar (imo) AND they sound better. I'd love any of the last 3 version! (although they all sound pretty good, the 2nd is kind of generic)
Not sure WHY you did this, but...... REALLY EXCELLENT JOB in every way. I have an early OCD and a much later one. I am going to open them up and see which version these are. I don't use them anymore. But I am definitely going to hook them up and see what they sound like after NOT using them for so long. Again, just a super job on this. Absolutely one of the best and most thorough comparison pedal clips that I have seen here. Edited to add-I just opened my older one up. How weird is this? Ser # 2605 dated 6-20-05. That seems a little strange. Cheers
i really love the sound of this pedal... they really improved on it over the years IMO. the newest version need not be scoffed at. Also.. Great video!! i like how you encorporated different chord progressions and different guitars/pickups to get a full range of sounds.
Had to take mine apart to see what version it was, it's a 1.7...love it!! Just changed the power supply to 18 volts, it made a big difference! Much better than 9 volts
Hey - long shot- did you play at Gwinnett arena years ago at the “Forward Conference” I remember a dude that looked like you - on a deluxe reverb that had the best tone of all the guitarist in like 8 bands. (I was the head audio guy w a massive LAcoustic rig) If that was you- very cool! I went and bought an OCD for my Twin and had a blast. If it’s not you - your video was great Well done on the info - editing- and your narration sounded all pro. Rock on!
Enjoyed this quite a bit, thanks for sharing. After watching, and thinking back to the name of the pedal, I have to wonder if all these revisions/versions aren't some sort of meta-commentary/joke on the pedal playing community. (They can't leave the circuit alone, because they're OCD...)
Interesting video, thanks! I bought one recently (1.7, the latest version before the new V2) and was a bit disappointed that it imparts a 'boxy' timbre to my sound. I know others have found the same thing. Also, the volume control goes from 'not on' to bloody loud at only a few millimetres rotation from off, unusably loud beyond that.
I had the V2.0, similar, volume 8 o'clock; a fraction either way = OFF or LOUD 😂. The V2.0 was also rather dark/bass heavy (I have a semi hollow humbucker guitar which also has a dark tone). Bought a V1.4, compared back to back, much prefer the V1.4 for my set up, less bass, nice harmonics, more useable volume control. Sold the V2.0. Also tried a V1.7 against the V1.4; but I was already smitten by the V1.4. Sold the V1.7; use the V1.4 every day! If you are looking for a V1.4, be aware that there was a long production run, and the components changed slightly during that time (mine is mid run and has the assymetrical germanium clipping diode - some love that, some not so much!).
Great video. Thank you for posting. I have a Version 1.6 and had a Version 2. I never noticed the V1.6 has V1.4 printed on the circuit board. When I compared the V1.6 and V2, I could clearly notice that V2 was has much more gain.
Probably the best comparison on the OCD pedals I have seen. Very nice to hear them side by side. However, I am still at a loss which to buy for over driven guitar solos. (if I can find a decent price on one these days) . Mainly looking for a great lead solo sound for recording, but wouldn't hurt to have a great live sound too. Well done guys. Thanks... Phil NYC / Jersey Shore Area
@@xjohn1970 Yes, there are some significant differences. V2.0 also has a lot of bass, which cannot be removed by increasing tone on the pedal. The V1.4 (which I prefer at the moment) less bass, more mids and top end.
Agree in part, they can be set to give very similar sounds, but one needs to try them in person for prolonged periods to really find the subtleties. The V1.4 and V2.0 that I have are quite different, the tones cannot be matched. The V1 series are much closer in sound.
Thanks, great demo. I saw the pedal show compare 1.7 to 2.0 and 1.7 sounds great, 2.0 sounded clearly harsher and scooped a different circuit board completely.
That was quite the obsessive compulsive drive pedal comparison. Loved it! The best sounds to my ears came from the Strat and Tele through V1.7. V2 sounded more hifi. And geraniums are pretty flowers 🤪
nice vid... someone brought me an OCD to play at a gig loved it, I went and bought one and hated mine. didn't know there were so many different ones at the time. Who knows which one I had compared to his.. It's really unfair for the builder to sell it as the same pedal.. there should be a number right on the front..anyway...thanks
Definately subtle differences between some, big diff on others. 1.1 & 1.7 stand out as similar and flatter EQ, the rest might just vary by standard deviation of stacking component tolerances, except 2.0 which is low-mid heavy to my ear.
I own the 2.0. IMO (to my ears) I liked the 1.6 the best on this video. BUT....They all sounded killer!! I've been through many OD and distortion pedals and had several buddies who use the OCD and I love their sound. So, I finally broke down and bought one. I run it next to my old Ibanez 1980 Tube Screamer modded by Analog Man and Keeley compressor clone. Running through about any good Fender tube amp I can get about any sweet country, rock or jazz tone I need.
In my experience: - 1.7 - very round clipping, lots of mids and low mids, less compressed, bassy when you crank the gain. tone knob doesn't seem to do much. This is nice for low to mid gain. Another 1.7 I had was even more bassy and less defined. I think this is due to the 1.7 being less compressed. - early 1.7 on a 1.4 circuit board: clipping wise sounds like the 1.4. Very, VERY bright and nearly scooped sounding in LP mode, kinda like a DS-1, very compressed. This is a plexi in a box. - 1.4: Same amount of gain and volume but as you said the pots are log (they ramp up towards the end). Has the 'raspy' clipping, not the 'round' clipping of the 1.7. Very effective tone control that also cuts or brings back midrange. This is a very nice all-rounder. Compressed. - 2.0 - Entirely different pedal. Flat midrange response. There is a reason why Fulltone only started calling the OCD "transparent" with version 2. Raspy clipping almost like a soft clipped pedal. Compressed.
Thanks a better video than others I've seen. I just came from trying the OCD it must have been the new one. My understanding is that the 2 differs in enhanced bypass. Otherwise these pedal sound very similar. Is the enhanced bypass necessary or helpful? I'd like to hear that difference otherwise I'd get an older one. Thanks it's hard to settle on one main OD but I loved it in the store.
Great video man. I took the germanium diode out of my 1.4. With it in I thought it was to mushy. But now it's every marshall made in a box ! Thanks for you time !
Great video. Thanks for posting it. I'm actually a fan of the Plimsoul more than the OCD. If there's any interesting info on that, would love to hear about it.
I use a 1.7 on bass. It hurts the low end so I added a line selector to keep the original signal mixed in. If you don't use a line selector but use a compressor, crank up the low end. you can basically play clean and switch to distortion by just playing harder.
Fulltone explains the changes as follows; the OCD has received many slight tweaks over the last 12 years, often incorrectly identified as “version 2, Version 3, V4, etc.” In reality there has always been only Version 1, with very slight variations making them V1.0 through V1.7. The release of the new OCD, is different enough that it warrants a version 2 (V2) designation. All the best.
Hi and thanks for all the info. I am buying an OCD and have a choice of 2, either a V2 or a much older one serial # 23877. Any suggestions please, greatly appreciated and thanks again for your videos.
I have a v1.6 that I absolutely love. At one point, I had two 1.6 ones and to me, they sounded different, so I opened them up and sure enough, there was a resistor on a pot in one and not the other.
Hey Tone Junkie, awesome video!!I have the OCD 1.7, and recently got the 2.0. It sounds like of those two you prefer the 1.7 -- is that right? Could you say why?I haven't completely decided which will stay on my board yet. I have a 65 Fender Deluxe reissue. With the 1.7, I was finding that playing a Les Paul into the Deluxe (with its always-on bright cap), I was getting an unpleasant / sharp band of distortion in the high EQ. When I tried the 2.0, the higher EQ distortion seemed to have more overtones and be a bit sweeter into a Deluxe, so I got it. Also the "you need a buffer if you have a lot of pedals" message worked on me. I'm still on the fence re the old one or the new one, though, and interested in others' opinions. You seem to be the OCD expert!!
CNCTEMATIC hey there! I felt the latest version w just had a bit too much gain and was s but congested sounding. With that said I like it more as the gain gets higher. For the lower setting I don't prefer it over the 1.7 which feels a bit more open. Of course though it depends on the guitar and amp etc. with a scooped fender amp the V2 may perform better than the 1.7.
Many thanks! I also tend to have the gain at or below 50%, and on the LP setting. I have a JHS @ for really high gain. So, listening to the expert, I'm going to go back to the 1.7 for a while! Either way, they're all very versatile, I think. It's not only a big gain pedal. With the gain almost off, it gives a great, fat boost. Tons of headroom. I find unity gain is with volume at 9 o'clock. Any thoughts on the value or otherwise of the new buffer in the v2.0?
Thanks again Tone Junkie. I put the v1.7 back on the board and I can hear why you prefer it. It definitely is more open and natural sounding than the 2.0. I wonder whether this 2.1 will have me buying another one!
Hey Tone Junkies, Part 2 to my OCD story. After watching your video and your helpful correspondence with me, I switched out the OCD v2.0 from my Board and replaced the v1.7. I was happier with the tone. It was, as you said, more open. (I use it set lowish as a mild-mid overdrive, with a JHS for more raunch, by the by. ANYWAY.., recently I noticed some noise artifacts in my sound. Sort of low crackle and static becoming audible on one of my two amps as notes or chords trailed off. I don't use a switcher. I tried putting the v2.0 OCD back in with the buffer on, and the noise has disappeared. Just thought I'd note this re the value of the buffer in the v2.0 Cheers
They all sound good IMO.. I really liked the 1.1 and the 1.4 the best as they seemed t be less aggressive on the eq curve... I foolishly let my 1.4 go thinking it was the final version and I could always get a new one .... wrong ! So now I have 1.7 and just picked up 2.0. Of those two I like the 2.0... One thing to consider is sometimes things that sound better alone don;t do as well in a band mix and vice versa.
I have a V1.4 and I think it sounds awesome! But after this video I am wondering if V1.4 sounds as good as the others but with just an overall volume decrease? I think I might find me a v1.7 and compare longer. The v 2.0 looks like it is too different and has SMD components. Not a fan of cheap Surface Mount Devices!
It's got a logrithmic pot for output level, which will be somewhat lower at some settings, but will be the same at max value. The benefit of a logarithmic audio taper pot is finer control at the middle range of the sweep at the expense of lower output in that range. But because it is ultimately the same value as the linear pot, they will both have the same output at higher levels.
Great video. I've owned 4 different versions over the years & now have the new V2. The version 1 here takes the cake for me. The least mid range of all of them & that's a good thing. I never owned the original one and damn it sounds good!
I opened my OCD and saw it was a 1.6. Great pedal! I use it for a thick, creamy marshall style sound, since I use a handwound Little Green Wonder for the slightly driven, transparent sound. Can agree that the OCD isn't the best clean boost since it can be a bit throaty. I have a question; on the side it says it can take from 9V to 18V. What does it sound with 18V?
Great vid dude!! Got my 1.7 and its defo more open and aggressive then the 1.4!! The version 1 sounds amazballs!! And the 2.0 sounds huge and mid rangy!!
2:12 Nice to see my handy work there!

Great comparison. I preferred 1.1, 1.4, 1.6 & 1.7
Cheers
Awesome video! I bought the 1.7 then found out there was a 2.0 later that day. After listening to this I'm glad I got the 1.7 instead of the 2.0
Version 2 is More Compressed and Distorted. Not as Open Sounding. I Agree the 1.7 is the Best.
I bought the last version and sucks
i really love the sound of this pedal... they really improved on it over the years IMO. the newest version need not be scoffed at. Also.. Great video!! i like how you encorporated different chord progressions and different guitars/pickups to get a full range of sounds.
Very cool video! Really nicely done and edited. I think 1.4, 1.6 or 2.0 would all work best for me
Had to take mine apart to see what version it was, it's a 1.7...love it!! Just changed the power supply to 18 volts, it made a big difference! Much better than 9 volts
64mung just bought a 1.7. What’s the main difference?
1.1 is my favorite but they all sound cool. Great pedal.
Me too, but it’s the one I own, so I’m probably biased.
Great video! Really liked the direct comparisons. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Juan!
Good work! 2.0 sounded pretty rad to me.
Great video, history, versions of the pedal and sound demos from all of them - thanks!
Hey - long shot- did you play at Gwinnett arena years ago at the “Forward Conference”
I remember a dude that looked like you - on a deluxe reverb that had the best tone of all the guitarist in like 8 bands. (I was the head audio guy w a massive LAcoustic rig)
If that was you- very cool! I went and bought an OCD for my Twin and had a blast.
If it’s not you - your video was great
Well done on the info - editing- and your narration sounded all pro.
Telorchid he's been trolling us for 8 versions!
Fuller plays the long game :)
Boy that room looks alot different without all those Amps.
From this video, my favorite sounding one is 1.3
Probably the best comparison on the OCD pedals I have seen. Very nice to hear them side by side.
However, I am still at a loss which to buy for over driven guitar solos. (if I can find a decent price on one these days) .
Mainly looking for a great lead solo sound for recording, but wouldn't hurt to have a great live sound too.
Well done guys. Thanks...

Well folks, this video shows that any of the 8 versions of the OCD can sound just like any of the other 7 versions with a simple tweak of the knobs!
OCD V2 has enhanced bypass
Rev. 1.6 sounds really good though. Lovely sounding crunches, especially when paired with humbuckers.
I’ve had v1.4 and v2. The V.1.4 absolutely blows the v2 out of the water
Very nice comparison, thanks.
In my experience:
- 1.7 - very round clipping, lots of mids and low mids, less compressed, bassy when you crank the gain. tone knob doesn't seem to do much.
Compressed.
1.0, 1.7, and 2 sound nice and bright. Cool now I can get a 2 blem! Great vid, man!
Edit. Just realized 2.1 is out ahhhh
I love all versions ! I've always got one on my pedalboard ! I don't care which one it is ! They all sound good to me !😁👍
No wonder I like the 1.3. I like to stack it into a clipping preamp and it's wonderful. Awesome video - thank you.
Of course my favorite one would be the original and priciest one. 1.7 comes in second.
I was on harmony central all the time
1.1 and 1.4 for me. They sound different, but I like both of them. Still have V 1.4 on my board.
what color is the light?
@@emmottataolcom red
I use a 1.7 on bass. It hurts the low end so I added a line selector to keep the original signal mixed in.
If you don't use a line selector but use a compressor, crank up the low end. you can basically play clean and switch to distortion by just playing harder.
Thanks for the video. I'm thinkin' I got a 1.6 or 1.7 Great pedal.
Still rocking my 1.1 and its always been my favorite
Me too!
S/N 23877 falls into the V1.4 production run. I have one just a little bit later, works great in my set up. Had a V2.0, bit dark for me.
1.7 to me has the nicest tone for me personally. I like grit but I like that very clean grit, especially with a strat.
Well said. I Agree. See my comments above as i have had a few of them.
Only difference between 1.2 and 1.3 is a change in the gain and tone pots... Amazing how much that effects the tone between the two!
Have the ocd v2 and a tubescreamer, best ODs ever!
Hi, I became your 1000th subscriber :) Good job !
Guel Lalor Guel!!!! You're the best!!!
Excellent informative demo 👍
I have the 1.7 and very happy with it
Cheers mate 👍🏴
Interesting history lesson. Was wondering why my 1.4 says 1.7 on the inside. Thanks!!!
I have a v1.6 that I absolutely love. At one point, I had two 1.6 ones and to me, they sounded different, so I opened them up and sure enough, there was a resistor on a pot in one and not the other.
Steven Sefton I have heard of this. Apparently this change is present in 1.7 as well but first took place on some 1.6s
Hey bud curious which V1.6 sounded best? With or without the resistor?
love this vid! informative and entertaining! really great work! keep it up!!!! and I can't choose between version 1.4 or 1.6. maybe i better get both!
I have that super sweet D/A/E jam stuck in my head now.
These were all great! I’m happy that the one I hace is my favorite!😊
CNCTEMATIC I've only tried the buffer once, it seemed to work it restored a touch of presence that the signal chain was eating up.
For me, OCD v1.4 starts to sound great when volume is over 3 o' clock
They all sound good IMO.. I really liked the 1.1 and the 1.4 the best as they seemed t be less aggressive on the eq curve... I foolishly let my 1.4 go thinking it was the final version and I could always get a new one .... wrong ! So now I have 1.7 and just picked up 2.0. Of those two I like the 2.0... One thing to consider is sometimes things that sound better alone don;t do as well in a band mix and vice versa.
Opened mine up. v1.4 10/2010. Who knew? Interesting video. Thanks.
RockStarJazzCat your very welcome thanks for the support!
@@jspartacus I have the V1.4 and prefer the volume control (had a V1.7 and V2.0).
Great video. I've owned 4 different versions over the years & now have the new V2. The version 1 here takes the cake for me. The least mid range of all of them & that's a good thing. I never owned the original one and damn it sounds good!
Kool demo and history. I learned a lot. I actually favored the 1.3 and 2.0 Versions and felt that the 1.1, 1.6,1.7 versions are great too.
