How to Make a Leather Bifold Wallet

  • This project video is about making a Leather Bifold wallet. I designed this wallet so that it is fairly easy to assemble with a lot of space to tool. Leather Wallets are fantastic gifts as well as just items that you can stock up on and sell at anytime.
We sewed one of these and buckstitched one in the video to show a different option of assembly if you don't have a sewing machine in your shop. If you have been wanting to make yourself a new wallet for some time, give this video a look and see if this design would work for you.
We have a DIGITAL Pattern Pack that is available on our website and if you would like a copy of that you can purchase that by Clicking this Link:
    dgsaddlery.com...
The pattern pack has all the cut patterns for the wallet and insides, as well as 8 different floral patterns.
If you are interested in the double sided tape used in the video, contact Maker's Leather Supply:
    makersleathers...

How much would you price those wallets for? Someone in the comments asked about clicked dyes, Springfield Leather Co. makes custom dyes, I don't know how much they charge, but I have found them to be customer driven and very nice. I would tell them if your a Veteran.

Another good one Don. Couple quick questions. Maybe I missed it, but what weight is the body?
Also do you not buff your dye areas before resisting? Assuming no issues with rub off without buffing?

I have learned a lot from your videos and have downloaded a number of your project patterns including this one. I appreciate you sharing your expertise and have learned a lot from watching your instructional videos. However, with this particular pattern I discovered as I was preparing to sew the interior, that the "pouches" simply aren't wide enough to hold a credit card. I cut everything exactly to your specs and am wondering if perhaps I did something wrong. Has anyone else had this problem? It seems that I'll need to do it all again but make everything a little wider this time.

Somethings off with the measurements in the pattern pack pattern, either you have to cut the pockets to 4 inches , which the pattern for the pockets measure 4 1/8 or you have to make the piece you put the pockets on longer, pattern not right

Don, I hand sew everything because I don’t have a heavy duty sewing machine. I used the double faced tape on some of my projects and found that it gummed up my pricking punches and also my sewing needles. I had to use my awl to open up the holes because the tape shut the holes. So it really wasn’t any faster than using cement.

Don, just as a matter of coincidence, if you have access to a wholesale art framing supply or retail store such as Hobby Lobby, Dick Blick, or other craft stores, they usually sell or have access to order that same tape you are using in your video. I owned and operated a wildlife art gallery and custom framing shop for a number of years, after another career in autobody repair and painting came to a medical end for me, and I ordered that tape in quarter and half inch rolls by the case for assembling matboards to each other for matting and framing posters and certain types of prints for my clients and all sorts of other odd jobs around the gallery and framing shop. In the framing field it is referred to as ATG tape and, if you Google that generic name you will find pages of places to buy the tape. As a business man though, you would easily qualify for wholesale purchases from most gallery or framing suppliers. If you need to find a framing wholesaler, I can steer you in the direction of businesses from whom I purchased most of my framing supplies including 3M ATG and other useful supplies for the leather worker. Ask for their current catalog when you get hooked up and you will be surprised at some of the similarities in the supplies used in both fields.
One more item, I was curious as I watched you sand the edges of both of your wallets, it looked like you had a really rough grit of sandpaper, maybe 40 or 80 grit paper like we used in shaping and prepping body filler prior to final sanding, priming, and finishing a collision repair?? Was I missing something or is that not a bit rough for sanding prior to edging and slicking leather?

Hey there Don. Excellent video you made there, can really see you have pride in your work and know what you are doing. I've been needing a new wallet and a couple of proper leather belts (shops seem to sell polyurethane 2 ply) for a few years now but I always hating changing wallets because it takes so long to get used to everything being in different places. Seeing as I'm a carpenter/jack of all by trade, probably having at least some of the tools, love to try new projects and get out of my comfort zone, i thought about making my own but I'm concerned it won't be good enough, I've never really worked with leather before. its something that will be with me all day every day for hopefully a decade or more and will be seen by many people most of all me.
If i do a bad job it will be a constant reminder for many years. I'd love people to think favourably about it and comment on it and I would like to honestly say i made it years ago and its still going strong. I want to make an exact copy of the one i currently have, after watching this video I'm now wondering if kangaroo would be good for mine too, a little reminder of home :) I don't know where to start. Also, if at a last resort i had to ask someone else to make an exact copy of mine for me, who would I ask? I know a cobbler that works with leather shoes in the UK, i knew a couple of outfitters in Australia when i was there but that's it really in the leather crafting world. is there an equivalent of a tailor but specializing in leather items?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance :)

Don, always enjoy watching your work. I love to Buck Stitch. One thing i keep waiting for you to say about the BS on this Video is, if you do an even amount of slits or punches, you always come on correct on where the last piece of lace goes. I always count, before i put the the last couple slits in or the counting gives you and idea, of where your gonna end, and one can prepair for the last punch. Some folks don't know, that you need an even number for the lace to end correctly.
